I Am Titanium by John Patrick Kennedy is a story of heroism and standing up for the good and right. Pax is not your garden variety of teen. First of all, he is a genius. There is nothing that he cannot understand or conquer. Secondly, he is dying. Where most of the teenagers will be on the beach, Pax is in the hospital wishing to live one more day. He different from others in another way: he has managed to make a connection with an alien being on the astral plane and he communicates with it.
His astral mentor from a friendship and Pax tells him about his condition. When Pax is given the chance to live a normal life with some awesome perks, he grabs it with both hands. His mentor wants to inspect Earth, an innocent request which Pax didn’t find threatening. Soon, it is revealed that the astral beings have their own plan and is not merely to inspect Earth. This innocent conversation jump starts a series of events that can change the history and future of Earth in a dangerous and unmerciful way.
It is up to Pax and his friend Scarlett to change the game, but can a teenage boy do that?
Kudos to John Patrick Kennedy for writing such an awe inspiriting novel, it gave me chills. Although, I am not a big fan of sci-fi, this novel changed me. Kennedy wrote with such care and diligence that the reader can feel it. His description of Pax’s condition was really good, almost as if he had lived it. Plus, he had the ability to make Pax a real person and not a character. I really loved that fact. 5 Stars and nothing less!
Would have appreciated a trigger warning for Rape. The book starts very well and had a nice hook, but I couldn't keep reading due to all the rape scenes.
Don't care if more come in the series or not. Forced myself to finish it. The style is definitely what I prefer, but the storyline and writing was so poorly done there was no real way to enjoy it.
With sumptuous, delicious writing and action that doesn't quit, John Patrick Kennedy delivers a unique story about an unlikely superhero who doesn't even want the job…
Pax, a young boy dying of Acute Scleroderma, is restored to youthful vitality—and then-some!—by an astral being Pax affectionately calls "Terry." This begins a wild ride with aliens, government agency baddies, an AI, an astral hottie, a volatile teen firestarter… and so much more!
I love that I Am Titanium both makes me want to read slowly, savoring the detail and language… and quickly, to get to the next part of the story in a gripping plot that never lets up in intensity!
I highly recommend this book for both teens and adults. The characters are rich, the writing strong, the plot fantastic-yet-believable… I was on the edge of my seat throughout! I Am Titanium is unique and versatile—and will appeal to readers across genres—not just sci fi enthusiasts, but also thriller-junkies, young adults, and lovers of literature.
An exciting and action packed read with supernatural surprises. I loved how the writer described Pax's love/hate relationship with his mother, a woman who cannot shake her scientific view of the world and simply be happy that her son was "brought back to life" and free of his illness. The story is filled with action, supernatural super hero events but also tells the tale of a boy who just wants to be a boy but is faced with having to save the world.
I would like to thank the author John Patrick Kennedy for the chance to read his novel in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
Pax is dying. He has spent his life since he was 6 in the hospital slowly dying. But he lives on the Astral Plane. No one believes him except Scarlett, who can actually see his astral form. When he goes to the astral plane he is not sick. His body is the strong teenage body he should have and not the weak wasting body lying in the hospital bed. As his human form lies taking its final heart beats Pax meets with his mentor “Terry” on the astral plane. Terry tells him he cannot heal him, but he can save him. He creates an astral body for Pax that can walk the Earth. The process causes havoc in the hospital which kills Scarlett so Terry takes advantage of that and creates an astral body for her too. This is the perfect way to keep “Lana” another astral entity close. In all of the confusion and change Pax and Scarlett do not understand what their new forms can do. Pax accidentally kills his mother and Scarlett kills many innocents in the hospital and outside. Terry cleans the mess up, but in many ways the damage is done.
Terry and Lana are on a mission to see if Earth and all of humanity should be cut off from the astral plane for eternity. Lana hates humans for an attack on her eons ago. She finds them all to be dark and murderous. As soon as she enters Scarlett, she is essentially proven right. The girl is full of darkness and malice. Terry claims to love the humans and only wants to prove they can be good, but even though he appears to be looking out for the teens, things seem off. Then Pax notices the tentacles. Black tendrils of hate and corruption, they seem to want to control the humans. And they are doing a good job of it too.
I wanted to love this story. Typing this up I realize that I love the idea of this story very much. The execution I am not so sure about. It was very difficult to read at times. I did not feel that the author gave me enough of a connection to the characters. They felt very two dimensional to me. The terminally ill boy and the girl who loved him, I wanted so much more from that. In the beginning we got a clear image she loved him but it seemed as though he only tolerated her because she was the person who actually visited, then suddenly they are having violent sex in the middle of central park. It didn’t make much sense to me. The book did somewhat improve as I made my way through it. The story just feels very rushed through and at times disjointed. As if he only had time to put down half the book. If it could be filled with more things that connect me to the characters and stories I would enjoy it much more.
John Patrick Kennedy’s “I Am Titanium” is a message novel in the tradition of Robert Heinlein’s “Stranger in a Strange Land.” But unlike Heinlein’s Christ-like figure, Kennedy’s main character is Pax, a teenage boy with a broken, dying body and an ability to access the astral plane. Pax also is the pet project of a non-physical being nicknamed Terry (aka Terkun’shuks’pai) who believes humans and the planet Earth are worth saving despite an abundance of evidence suggesting otherwise. Not every being on the astral plane agrees with Terry, including Lana, who is coopted by Terry to interact with Scarlett, the traditional outsider high school girl. Scarlett is in love with Pax.
When Pax becomes an astral being, Scarlett follows him, albeit accidently. Suddenly, they have more powers than all superheroes combined. The problem is that they cannot control the powers and each of them wrecks havoc, leaving behind a body count that is the envy of any Hollywood summer action movie franchise. In short, think “Bonnie and Clyde” meets “Alien” meets “Avatar.”
The real villains in Kennedy’s novel are black tentacles - “a symbiotic or parasitical negative energy species.” Unlike the creature in the “Alien” film trilogy, these tentacles are harder for the good guys to destroy and harder for the reader to believe in. Pax and Scarlett, all humans for that matter, are pawns of these non-physical beings, the good force versus the bad force – like the gods of Mount Olympus battling for control of the universe.
The dialogue can be pretty thick: “The destructiveness of the primary intelligent species, combined with its lack of production of secondary and tertiary intelligences …”, but the action never ends, the philosophy is hard to disagree with, and Pax and Scarlett are imaginative characters. Some readers will love the book, others not so much.
I requested this book via Xpressobooktours.com. Thanks!
This was a DNF and I feel ashamed of it. I really do. But this book was so painful , so hard to get through that I had to give up or try to read it for the next month or so, and I can't waste my time in a book I do not enjoy. OK first of all I want to talk about the whole "Astral Plane " thing. I think that the author should have added one more page with details and explanations about what that is, because I never in my life heard of the "Astral Plane", and I was so lost that I was like "well let's just say is a freaking spaceship with some Alien dude inside." As ignorant as I might sound, never in my life heard of it.And probably I am not the only one out there that has never heard of it. Astral Body . How was it created, what was it made of? human body? I was completely lost. The first 60 pages of the book was about Doctors and nurses trying to bring Pax and Scarlet back to life,( well not the entire 60 pages but there was a lot f it) so everyone was screaming and trying to resuscitating them , screaming and resuscitating , screaming and resuscitating , screaming and resuscitating , screaming and resuscitating , screaming and resuscitating , screaming and resuscitating ... more screaming and more resuscitating . Man, It felt to crowded in there, to many people... this just wouldn't stop. It was a nightmare. And the name of the astral beings(Lana and Terry <---- not their real names) were so long and difficult to read. Then I ended up searching what and Astral plane was. I guess In the end learn something with this book.
And I will be fair and Honest I will give it 2 stars because I did not finish it.
DISCLAIMER: I own this book, but I had requested to review this book (via XpressoBookTours) before learning that I had won an e-book copy. I read from my e-book copy. I am going to keep this as non-spoiler as I can.
Characters/Plot: Pax is an incredible character, you can't not like him. He sticks in your head (probably because the first thing that is happening is him in the hosipta); you can't stop thinking about his story. First few chapters has you on a book roller coaster, and I know it is not easy to do that. Which was fantastic. You get sucked in at the beginning. It is so hard to stop reading about Pax and the things he goes through. His friend, Scarlett; you learn that she cannot live without him. You feel her agony in the beginning and as everything progresses, you learn more about their friendship, and Astral beings. It is a heart-jolting book!
I’m always down for a good superhero origin story. This one has the hallmarks of a good one- the hero gains power from their disability. The reversal of a mentor figure. It’s good stuff. At the core, it’s a solid idea that’s a lot of fun. But I really feel like this book was about 2 solid re-writes away from being a good story. It’s rushed in some parts, disjointed in other, and overall just lacks a smoothness that should be there in a book like this. This really has the feel of a first draft. The voice of the author is good, entertaining and easy to read. The characters are interesting, but could use some rounding out. The two central characters feel flat as they really don’t develop too much past who they are in the introduction. The central theme/idea is a good one that should be explored further. Overall, I liked the organizing idea but the execution really brings the novel down quite a bit. I was provided this novel for free in exchange for a fair and honest review.
From the first page to the last this grabs the reader and won't let go! Just the protagonist's name , meaning Peace, gets the immediate attention of the reader! Never mind the condition he's in grabbing ones heart with empathy! I will follow this author until I've squeezed every last drop of his imaginative stories he writes! I received this book by the assistance of Choosybookworm and the graciousness of the author to allow me to read and review! A book worth saving and re-reading! Don't ask to borrow my copy, it's too previous to let out of my sight!
This book had a good premise, but the writing started getting too "jumpy". While it's technically sound, the switches in scenes tend to go for "Immediacy" and then backtrack, as opposed to interconnecting in one streamed narrative. Equally, as the book progressed, the writing gets more and more "heavy", to the point of being somewhat cumbersome.
The idea behind the book was an interesting one, it's something that would be cool to see adapted into something for either the big or small screen, and the plot remains interesting; but the writing being so cumbersome really hurts the appeal here.
I Am Titanium by John Patrick Kennedy is a fast-paced action packed adventure.
Pax is a dying boy who has theorized about the astral plane almost his entire life. Though many doubt him, Scarlett has always believed in him. Pax’s astral friend is Terry who many believe have political reasons for befriending Pax. Terry has offered to give Pax a new body which would turn him into a tool to save the universe. But while Pax thinks this is wonderful, not is all as it seems.
With great action, this book is a must read for readers of all ages.
I am not a lover of science fiction books but I have to admit I loved this one. The author has an amazing ability to give very descriptive details that makes the whole story seem real. and right in front of you!! This book has non stop action between good and evil and even a little lesson on to be careful on what you wish for, which I'm a big believe about! I can't wait to read the next book in this series to see where the author takes it to next!!
This was a very unique and thought provoking read. Pax, a teen genius is dying, but has the amazing ability of being able to communicate with a being on the astral plane. When offered the chance for salvation, a move to something greater then being human, who would not jump at the chance. But there is always a price to pay... Great read!
Checked out the reviews for this book before I deciding to purchase it. Was a little concerned that I was buying a dud due to a few negative reviews. Seems they were erroneous and I'm very happy with my purchase. I'll definitely be purchasing any follow up novels in this series!
A very interesting take on the "I got superpowers" trope. Overall I thought it was a great book. The only thing I have against it is it gets too many viewpoints in the middle of the book. Throwing characters at you, without investing in their importance, and straying from the main story a little too much to show what a side characters doing.
The story was great full of action and suspense. You could relate to the characters and feel their emotions. The only reason that I gave it four instead of five stars was that the story jumped from person to person and it sometimes was confusing. There was also some situations that were never fully explained.
Considering I read it in two days...including going to work...I'd say it was pretty good. Got sidelined by a few twists I didn't see coming. Very well done.
Some interesting ideas but the main plotline doesn't make much sense - one of those if the super-genius character just paused for twenty seconds and explained themselves half the problems would be solved. A lot of the ideas were somewhat interesting but the book didn't seem thought out all the way.
