Hair-raising chills and romantic thrills in the latest from Select Suspense!
Spy versus spy...
Top-secret government operatives can't afford emotional attachments. Years ago, Beckett Hanson broke the rule and fell in love. Hard. She was a spy - like Beckett - until she went dark eight years ago. She simply disappeared. And for Beckett, that meant hardening his broken heart and being the job. Until one phone call changes everything...
Indigo Grey left her life behind eight years ago when she became pregnant. Since then, she's lived a "normal" life with her son, until a trip lands them both in some serious hot water. Now her son's life is in danger and Indigo is desperate. The only man who can help her is the man she ran away from - the father of her son. But they're running out of time...
A USA Today Bestselling author, Aliyah Burke is an avid reader and is never far from pen and paper (or the computer). She loves to hear from her readers and can be reached http://aliyah-burke.com/blog/contact/ Facebook, twitter, Instagram, or via email.
She is married to a career military man, and they are owned by 4 Borzoi. Her days are spent sharing her time between work, writing, and dog training/showing.
Ms. Burke gave me just what I was asking for: a great interracial spy romance. And the heroine is Grade A Certified Kickbutt Artist. She reminds me favorably of one of my all time favorite heroines, Charly Baltimore from "The Long Kiss Goodnight." There's even a line about her joining the PTA and making pretty good cookies. Happy sigh!
Seriously, Indigo is the real deal. She is hardcore. She's an ex assassin who goes off the grid to raise her son by her ex-partner, Beckett. They are reunited when he's sent to retrieve her from a Mexican jail. She cannot go back to their ex-agency. She has to save her son from the people who kidnapped him. Beckett finds out he's a papa in a very explosive way. And Beckett quickly chooses that he's going to help his ex-partner and lover get their son back. They make a killer team (literally).
I love that Burke makes the action authentic. Sometimes with romantic suspense, the action takes a backburner. The spy stuff will make a spy fan happy. Indigo and Beckett really do act like operatives. It also reminded me of "Alias", which is one of my all time favorite shows. Indigo has many of the traits I loved about Sydney Bristow, although she's more emotionally closed off. The scenes in which Indigo does what she needs to do to get her son back are well-orchestrated. I liked that even though there are plenty of steamy scenes, they are appropriate to the story. No extraneous sex breaks. And while it's clear that Indigo and Beckett love each other, they have to work through their issues and put the past into perspective. You can see that they were always good together. Their romantic relationship was built on a solid foundation of mutual respect and friendship, and despite the way things ended, that didn't change, except maybe for the better.
While this read a little slow at times (It was probably me and not it. I'm a bit short attention span right now), it ends with an explosive action sequence that will make any bonafide action lover happy. And the operations felt pretty authentic to me (not that I have a spy background!).
I gave this 4.25 well deserved stars because it's a very good story. The writing flows and it has a cinematic feel. Burke know show to bring on the sexy without being kinky or off-puttingly raunchy. The characters are three-dimensional (although I wish that Indigo's physical features were more described). Beckett is likable despite the fact that he acted like a commitment-avoiding Peter Pan in the past. I couldn't hate Indigo for her choice to disappear and have her baby without Beckett, based on their situation and the way Beckett acted in the past. It was good that she got to hear Beckett's side of things and to see that Beckett had changed. He deserved the right to know his son, and clearly he would die protecting both of them.
Burke delivers on the spy romance and with a dangerous couple to boot. Pick this up when you need your kickbutt heroine action romance fix.
Code Name: Papa features a kick-your-ass heroine named Indigo Grey and her once again faithful partner and sidekick, Beckett Hanson! Not of his choosing, they parted ways 8 years ago—Beckett is angry when she doesn't show up to meet as planned. Indigo carries a secret that makes his appearance nine months later.
Present day, Beckett has been given a last minute just follow orders assignment to pick up a package—lo and behold, it's the woman he's been trying to forget for 8 years. Indigo is not happy to see him and tries to escape his clutches at the first opportunity that presents itself. It's do or die for Indigo, because her son Sean has been kidnapped. Indigo convinces Beckett, by revealing that Sean is his son so Beckett makes the decision to disobey the direct order to bring her in.
Someone has made the biggest mistake of their life by their elaborate plan to bring her back into the fold. Mistake No. 1) they kidnapped Sean and Mistake No. 2) they have the audacity to threaten Sean's life! What they don't know, but they will soon find out is they should have left her son out of it. Because now—once again—the cookie baking, PTA mom must now unleash the dark, kick ass, no mercy side that she has suppressed for the last 8 years. Beckett has a choice, he can either join her or continue to work for the treacherous organization that employs him. Hang on Sean ... Mama's on her way!
Indigo Grey thought she had left the shady life of a spy behind until one day her son, Sean, was kidnapped. Now she has to return to the life she swore to stay away from, but she would do anything to find her child. Beckett Hanson has wondered for years what happened to his lover and partner, Indigo. They were supposed to meet up one night 8 years ago, but she never showed. While on assignment, Becket is told to pick up a special package. He was shocked to find that the package waiting for him was non other than Indigo. When these two come face to face after all these years, secrets are revealed, sparks fly, and more unanswered questions surface. Indigo and Beckett couldn't be in a room together without arguing which led to very passionate encounters between the two. I loved the strength the Indigo showed even when she just wanted to breakdown and cry. I think that's what Beckett admired about her the most, which made them the perfect partners in and out of bed. If you're looking for a suspense filled romance with a little mystery, I think you will enjoy Code Name: Papa. I give it 4.5 stars.
I am truly disappointed with Ms Burke. After reading 3 or 4 books, This will be the last book that I read of hers. She does a great job at creating suspense but is horrible with fulling explaining the plot. So many questions are left unanswered and she usually has so many things going on at one time that it's hard to follow.
What was Michael hiding? Why did DeSalvo kidnap her some and make her do the killings? What was the deal with her and her dad? Why did Julie and Richard hate Indigo so much to frame her and want her dead? Too many questions. No answers.

Excellent book! The pacing, the characters, the research. Lots of action, weapons, gizmos, all sounding authentic for mercernary assassins. But that didn't overwhelm the story. I'm all about the relationship in a romance and that never wavered in this one.
I love this author, but me and this book did not get along. The writing was good, the plot was exciting, the action was there, but the characters were awful (IMO). My issue is this...There are 7 continents, 6 are inhabited by humans, we live on 1 of the inhabited, that means there are 5 other continent's full of men and women. How can you be hung up on 1 individual? How could you have found the "One Magic Stick To Rule Them All" or the " Grand Supreme of all coochie's"? I'm sick of this "only one" and "the one that got away" mantra that keeps getting recycled. 3 star's because I've heard this time and time before.
Poor narration, mediocre romance, good suspense. The h in this story was not very likeable. She was hot and cold so much that it was hard to look past her issues. The H was likeable just that the narrator's voice for him was cringe worthy. This would probably have been better read than listened to.
I have been a fan of Aliyah Burke's for quite a while and she has never disappointed me,so with that said this story is absolutely the bomb!!This was so much fun to read, not only is it action packed but the chemistry is off the charts it's just plain sexy.I would be surprised if anyone comes away from this story saying (that was just off the chain).I love a story with two characters are equal in every way and the alpha male Beckett doesn't mind acknowledging.I love that Indigo is one bad mom's.That is what partly makes this story so good,is that we get to see a kick butt heroine and she's not angry in the sense because she a strong black woman, mitt because she what good at what she does and she is in angry mom's bear mood. This is a sexy, action packed, with romance thrown in to make a complete story that's off the charts.Take a moment to see a kick butt momma and papa show you how its done, when the job needs doing.Just an all around good story.
Successful agents can't fall in love-it's not allowed. The rules of their lives make it impossible for them to maintain a relationship when they never know which dangerous hell-hole they'll be sent into next. So years ago, when Beckett Hanson fell for a female agent he was frequently partnered with, he had no idea how to proceed with letting her know. But he did buy a ring--which he never got to offer to her, because she didn't show up at the place they were to meet at for dinner. And suddenly she went "dark"-disappeared off the radar of the uber-secret agency they worked for.
Indigo Grey disappeared when she got pregnant. If agents aren't allowed to fall in love, they certainly aren't allowed to have a baby. So she retreated to the backwoods to raise her child in peace. While on a vacation in Mexico, they're accosted and her son is kidnapped. Yep, her past life has come back to bite her in the butt. And she's in a Mexican jail being abused by arrogant jailors.
Beckett gets a call to retrieve a prisoner and bring her back to the agency. He isn't told who the prisoner is, and when he gets there he's gob-smacked. He gets Indigo out and they angrily accuse each other of a lot, with her trying to escape from him, until finally he gets her to reveal what her problem is--she needs to use all of her skills to go find and rescue her son. But Beckett's been ordered to bring her to the agency in the states, which he does. She reveals to him that the boy is his son, and he needs to help her, because after 8 years off the grid, she's not sure if her skills are what they used to be. Now what?
Beckett's loyalties are torn--to the agency he's devoted his life to--or to the woman he thought he'd lost forever? And--a son? Feelings he's never had roar to life. Indigo needs his help, but can't risk letting him know how she still feels about him, because he'll never leave the agency, which would put their son constantly at risk for the kind of danger he's in now.
This is a fast-paced, suspenseful read. Constant action, betrayals, and loyalties that go back years are featured, as people who are adrenaline junkies jockey for power. And in the midst of all this is a steamy romance, along with the love of parents for their child.
I always enjoy Burke's books. They never disappoint.
I couldn’t give a higher mark because Indigo was so unlikable. She kept running off on her own endangering her son although she rather blame someone else. Her behavior towards Beckett was rude, disrespectful and unacceptable. She treated him less than a sperm donor. I couldn’t see the love at all. Lust yes but no love. She kept saying my son. Not realizing that she couldn’t get it done on her own. She never thank Lisa either for her help. The also were too many threads which made no sense and were never answered. Why did they choose her? What was the group Julie was talking to? Why were the 10 people on the list important? Why did she hate EGIS so much? Michael behaved appallingly but isn’t how government agencies behave? It would have been nice for Indigo and Beckett to build a security firm instead of letting their skills go to waste. Also would have been a better way to keep their kids safe instead of playing “the American dream”. We also never got more about her father and why he was so skilled.
I really enjoyed this story and the story line was believable! Indigo was truly a badass! Together with Beckett they were a badass team! Loved all the twist and turns the author took you on. You did not know who the bad guys were and the suspense kept you on the edge of your seats. This was a great book reading it was just like watching a movie! I could see it all going down and that is awesome. There are very few authors that can give you a story that draws the reader in to the point where you can see the story in your minds eye. So Ms Burke I say hats off to you cause you have done the damn thing with this book! Love the chemistry between Iggy and Beckett it was smoking hot 🔥! I highly recommend this book to my fellow romance readers you will not be disappointed! This book is awesome 👌!
There was a lot of running around. There was a lot of shooting. There was a lot of time in cars/hotel rooms. There was a LOT of longing. BUT there wasn’t a lot of suspense. Nor enough explanation.
Beckett and Indigo get a hotel room. Next thing we know two of his colleagues are at the door. How did they get there? Why did Becket trust them?
Plus too many questions. Why did Julie and Richard hate Indigo? Why did they start a vendetta against her 8 YEARS after she left. What was at the house in Wyoming that DeSalvo mentioned?
I loved every minute of reading about Beckett and Indigo. Thus was a wonderful story, loved the characters, loved how they had each other backs. Indigo was a very fearless mother. I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone who love a great romance with second chances and a bit of danger. Well done Aliyah please keep these wonderful stories coming. Thank you.
I liked Indigo 💙💙 She was smart, strong, spy not damsel type at all💕 H was also likable. He was not asshole alpha type, he let her do her job cz she was good at it. Like the fact that she didn't need to be rescued all the time. She was a great mom.
Whatever, I felt that the story was kind of disorderly. Not perfectly blended in all the edges. I will try more of this author. And hope for this kind of strong h in other stories ❤️❤️❤️
Beckett and Indigo, former partners and lovers, meet again in a Mexican jail. He was sent to extract her and she only wanted to escape. Her son was being held hostage and she had to meet the kidnappers demand by a certain time. The thriller gets more complex to the point you really do not know who is good or evil.
A thoroughly captivating story which made me wonder about the lengths I would go to save the life of one of my children. Reading this story was both a thrilling and emotional experience. Burke is a wonderful storyteller.
Good story. Liked the characters and the flow of the story. Disliked the concentration on their lust for each other. Didn't appreciate the details on weapons. Neither stopped me from enjoying the tale.
"Code Name: Papa" was an enjoyable read. I liked Indigo and Beckett together and wished that the story was more focused on them (trying to make their way back to being a couple) and Sean and not the extremely detailed mission. Otherwise, great read.
Indigo is a girls-who-kick-butt character who is savvy and savage about protecting her son. Swoony baby daddy Beckett and a great epilogue make this a fun read.
I absolutely loved it. Stressed me out and everything lol. This is the second book I’ve read by the author and I’m impressed. She definitely has a new fan. ☺️
Indigo Grey thought she was doing the right thing for everybody involved when she walked away from her job as an operative for EGIS. But Indigo not only walked away from the job, she left her on and off the job partner, Beckett Hanson.
After realizing she was pregnant and remembering Beckett told her he wasn't a commitment kind of guy, Indigo thought she didn't have a choice, especially given their line of work and their boss' attitude of 'whatever it takes.' But now their son's life is in danger and Indigo will do anything to save him, even let Beckett in on her secret and swallow her pride.
While this fast paced read was good and delivered exactly what was promised, I wanted to like it much more than I actually did. The story fell flat for my taste because I was interested but not invested in the characters (primary or secondary). They were too lightweight and didn't have enough depth. Also the wedged in interracial aspect of the leads was throwaway and didn't have an impact on the story.
Indigo & Beckett where once partners,Top-secret government operatives who where never supposed to get involved with one another, let alone fall in love. When Indigo up and just disappears Beckett is heart broken. Fast forward 8 years and Beckett is sent on a retrieval op and the person he is to bring in is none other than Indigo. Indigo has been keeping a secret, she was pregnant and that is why she disappeared, to have a normal life for her and her son, but when an old enemy kidnaps her son she see red and does anything she can to get her son back even if that means tell Beckett he has a son. It was ok, had a good bit of suspense which was good, but the story didn't really grab my attention. Honestly it was a bit slow for me. I have read other books by this author and they are very romantic and this story was no different, and the suspense was good.I just could not get into this book.
Papa had her back, so Mama took care of the business of protecting and rescuing her son! This was good, but it could have been more detailed in providing background information on Indigo and Beckett! Family was mentioned, but not enough provide any enlightenment as to how they evolved to be who they became, Special Operatives! Especially, with Indigo, you don't even get a concrete picture of her race or her Father! It is just here, take this, a snippet of their life as these two try to rescue their kidnapped son! At this point, I guess, it is what it is! An journey into a soul stirring love affair and then, a long lasting love and creation of a family!
This book was really exciting. From the first word I was drawn into Indigo and Beckett's story. Her son is kidnapped and she will do everything she can to get him back, including kill anyone that stands in her way, even her former co-worker and ex lover.
The book was a roller coaster ride and I enjoyed all the twists and turns. The suspense continued until the last page because I wasn't sure they were ever going to get together. The love scenes were hot.
Beckett is my new book boyfriend. Thanks to the author for another really good book.
