Behind a Mask, Or, a Woman's Power

Rate this book
Originally published in 1866 under the pseudonym "A. M. Barnard." Louisa May Alcott's novel of romance and sexual intrigue is one of her lesser-known gems. Its tone and characterizations strike a markedly different chord from her best-known works, such as "Little Women" and "Little Men," and it remains a popular addition to her oeuvre.

Louisa May Alcott was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet best known for writing the novel Little Women (1868) and its sequels Good Wives (1869), Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886). Raised in New England by her transcendentalist parents, Abigail May Alcott and Amos Bronson Alcott, she grew up among many well-known intellectuals of the day, including Margaret Fuller, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Alcott's family suffered from financial difficulties, and while she worked to help support the family from an early age, she also sought an outlet in writing. She began to receive critical success for her writing in the 1860s. Early in her career, she sometimes used pen names such as A.M. Barnard, under which she wrote lurid short stories and sensation novels for adults that focused on passion and revenge.
Published in 1868, Little Women is set in the Alcott family home, Orchard House, in Concord, Massachusetts, and is loosely based on Alcott's childhood experiences with her three sisters, Abigail May Alcott Nieriker, Elizabeth Sewall Alcott, and Anna Bronson Alcott Pratt. The novel was well-received at the time and is still popular today among both children and adults. It has been adapted for stage plays, films, and television many times.
Alcott was an abolitionist and a feminist and remained unmarried throughout her life. She also spent her life active in reform movements such as temperance and women's suffrage. She died from a stroke in Boston on March 6, 1888, just two days after her father's death.

I would surely like to know the public reaction when this book was published. It is somewhat unusual more so for an author like L M Alcott who authored the Little women which those who have read it know to be prim and proper ,maybe a little preachy too. This one was just the opposite and it brought so much excitement and suspense that I started anxiously waiting for my morning walks when I could listen to this on audio from Librivox. Hats off to the author for such a variety in her writing. And a word of appreciation for the reader Elizabeth Klett. Her voice with only slight nuances brings the various characters to life.

Ah, those feminine wiles that men cannot resist–like being completely ignored. I spent a lot of this book chuckling and I think it was meant by Alcott to be a bit of fun and not to be taken too seriously. There are scenes early in Little Women when Jo is writing plays for the girls to perform or trying to hawk one of her stories to a magazine, and this story seems as if it might be one of those.

I found it interesting that all the male characters are duped by Jean Muir, while only the very young and very old women are. Alcott might be telling us that women are more perceptive, or maybe it is just the jealousy of the women of similar age that keep them aloof and suspicious. Secretly, all us women must wish we could have the power over men Jean exhibits–few ever melted for me, and absolutely none of them just because I batted my eyes correctly.

I love Alcott’s easy style and simple prose, and I find her portrayals witty and enjoyable, even when slightly ludicrous. Anything that elicits a smile is worth a read, so I am satisfied in having read this one.

Behind a Mask was a surprise to me. The protagonist, Jean Muir, was a femme fatale; maybe even a sociopath. She was a 30-year old passing herself off as a beautiful, charming 17-year old. Jean could do this brilliantly because of her former career as an actress. Her goal in life was to marry a rich man with a title. She got herself a position as a governess in a household with two eligible young men. Watch out everybody! The setting was in England sometime in the 19th century.

The author was an American; none other than Louisa May Alcott. A. M. Barnard was her non de plume. Who would have thought Louisa had a dark side? The Little Women books were so sweet in comparison that it's hard for me to imagine her writing this. Apparently Alcott was in need of money so wrote a series of scandalous thrillers to sell fast and entertain the masses. I'm part of the future masses and was highly entertained. 4.5 stars.

Hands down, one of the most satisfying endings I've come across lately.

If you have read this book, and you already know the ending, please don't judge me, but I believe sometimes we need more endings like this, especially when it comes to nineteenth century novels, if you know what I mean. Also, I wasn't expecting to find a kind of gloomy, gothic story written by Louisa May Alcott, which is surprising because Behind a Mask; Or a Woman's Power has nothing to do with her most famous novel, Little Women; in this case the atmosphere is not uplifting, cozy or charming; neither is the entire plot.

Jean Muir is definitely a very interesting character, not only because she was able to come up with a brilliant plan so that she would be introduced to the Coventry family and be the governess of the sixteen-year-old daughter, but also because she is so smart that every decision she made was almost flawless; she knows when and how to do what she needs to do, and especially she seems to believe what she says so that the others also believe her. The reader already knows what's going on from the very beginning, when on chapter one we get to know the real Jean, whereas the rest of the characters are completely oblivious to her façade and what is taking place behind their backs; therefore, this fact makes the reading experience be more 'addictive' and riveting, as you really want to find out whether or not everything will turn out well, whatever 'well' means.

Notwithstanding my experience in the end, at some point in the middle of the book I thought this story would be just fine, even okayish, with an intriguing plot, yet a simple narrative, that was furthermore somewhat repetitive, especially since it was pretty obvious what was happening and the way everything would probably end. I was mistaken. The author definitely pulled it off and the last three chapters were absolutely a great surprise and they lived up to my expectations and beyond; when you get to the final explanation, you can see that coming, however, there are some things that were completely unexpected. Overall, Behind a Mask; Or a Woman's Power is a straightforward, yet complex story, when the reader is somehow a witness to Jean's perfect plan and its development. I would recommend it to anyone who is into Victorian literature—despite not being a Victorian book—and wants to read something with a different kind of ending. Also, whether you liked Little Women or you hated it, please give Behind a Mask; Or a Woman's Power a try since you will find a good writing style as well, but with a tone and a pace that are rather different from her most famous book.
Finally, if you are into audiobooks as much as I am, on LibriVox there is one version of this novella narrated by Elizabeth Klett, and as some of you know, she is one of the best over there—the voice of Jean Muir is so spot on and masterfully done, in my view.

Pausing an instant on the threshold before she vanished from their sight, she looked backward, and fixing on Gerald the strange glance he remembered well, she said in her penetrating voice, "Is not the last scene better than the first?”

I really enjoyed this book. I listened to it as an audio book on a long car ride. It was suspenseful and kept me interested while not requiring much deep thought. I was cheering on our heroine/villain. I love that Louisa May Alcott wrote such a despicable character, and that knowing this I still wanted her to succeed. Fun book.

Alcott's Jean Muir is the perfect femme fatale. She is also both the protagonist and antagonist of her tale in an editorial adherence on the part of the authoress to the woman question. By making of Jean Muir at once the villain and heroine of the novel, Alcott was inviting her readers to ponder the circumstances and conditions of women which brought about such a behavioral pattern in a person amply capable of noble feelings.

To begin with, Jean Muir makes her first appearance in the novel as a governess. The governess figure in Victorian literature was a center of interest to many an author on account of the alienation which such women had to go through during their lives. They were placed in a class higher than servants and lower than employers. Thus, they could neither blend with the domestics nor mingle freely with the family. This had created at the time a sort of dehumanizing effect, clearly visible in the opening scene of the novel when Mrs. Coventry was questioning Muir with no regard or care for the younger woman's feelings.

Muir's original profession as we understand later, however, was acting. Here, another absurd convention is brought to the fore in connection with the Victorian hypocritical condemnation of actresses as a less respectable class of women. The same prejudice against divorced women is added to the circumstances which forced Jean to forge for herself a new persona under which she could integrate society again. At the same time, her anxious quest for a titled, rich husband was only a desperate desire for survival, for she had known all along that her veil could fall at any moment, and leave her in want and destitution.

The novel was subtitled "A Woman's Power" in an ironical demonstration of the true power of women in the midst of a patriarchal community that had undermined their true potential and abilities. In the book, all four strong men, counting the wild Sydney, the proud Gerald, the manly Edward, and the noble John - all four bow to the penniless governess who came from obscure origins and had no other weapon but her womanhood to defend her in an unjust world.

и скажу свою просто любимую фразу: «to jest nie za bardzo dobro, ale normalne»🙏🏼

One of Louisa May Alcott’s tales of “blood and thunder”, this novella answers a fascinating question: what if an author of Gothic stories were to remove Jane Eyre (best governess ever) from the plot and replace her with Scarlett O’Hara?

From the first chapter, Alcott presents flaming red signs that this story will not end well as the new governess settles into her room and has a private conversation with her flask of alcohol: “Thank you, old friend. You put heart and courage into me when nothing else will. Come, the curtain is down, so I may be myself for a few hours, if actresses ever are themselves.”

This Victorian sensation novella is so over-the-top that it made me grin and giggle but, at the same time, Alcott’s writing is great and her understanding of human nature is on point. It was such fun and I loved it.

Recommended for fans of “Little Women” and “Eight Cousins” who want to see Louisa May Alcott’s darker side and also for readers who love Victorian sensation novels.
