Rate this book
This is the very original book by Peter Kelder, written in 1939 and reviewed by the author in 1946, about the five tibetan exercises which contain the secret of the fountain of youth. Also known as 5 tibetan rites or just the five tibetans, this routine of tibetan yoga will provide you with strength, vitality and focus, empower your inmunitary system and increase your general wellbeing.

Hidden in a Tibetan monastery for more than 2.000 years, the fountain of youth awaited to be discovered. This is the fascinating story of the man who brough it to the Western world so everybody can benefit from it.

Since childhood I have had several back problems, even ended up it the hospital with it. I got my hands on this book in Russia half a year ago and read it in one day. The book is very easy to read and understand. But most importantly, when i tried out the rites, after a month the pain disappeared and i felt great like never befor. This book can improve your life!

UPDATE!

Its interesting to me that I've had 'updates' in the past couple of months when making a new friend on Goodreads.

A new friend + an old memory = a nice way to begin a day!

I read this book while on a retreat years ago.

The idea of this 'slim' book is to feel YOUNG! (just what the book says). ha! :)

If you are terrified of yoga, this book demystifies the ancient science of yoga by making it accessible to everyone.

There are Five Rites recommended (exercises) --to do each day!

"A feeble body enfeebles the mind"....(Jean Jacques Rousseau)

On that note: Time to move a little...'see ya'! :)

When I began doing the Five Rites, as explained in this book, I documented my progress, first on a diary site and then later on my blog. Inexplicably I stopped doing them after a few months and have never felt as well since. One day, when the time is right, I will make them a part of my life again.

The story that explains how the book came about is charming, whether it's true or not, it doesn't matter. The Five Rites are yoga type exercises that build your strength and well being.

Have a nice day, cả nhà💙💙💙

Fun book, not worth the money in my opinion. The origin story of the Tibetan Rites is entertaining, but the meat of the book - the rites themselves - could easily be condensed into a short article or blog post without losing much of their essence from this book. Kelder's descriptions give a little more detail on each rite than I've read online, but not as much detail or explanation as I'd hoped for.

Here are the rites summarized if you want to save yourself a few bucks. For rites 1-5, begin with 3 repetitions each adding 2 repetitions each week until you reach 21 repetitions:

1) Spin in circles locking eyes with one point to stop from getting too dizzy
2) Lying flat with back to floor, tuck chin to chest and raise straight legs 90 degrees
3) Kneel on floor with both knees, chin tucked down, place hands behind thighs under butt then arch your spine and head backwards as far as you can, return to straight spine with chin tucked down
4) Sit on floor with straight legs in front of you, straight spine. Place hands palm down on floor beside hips. Keeping hands on the floor, arch your head back looking behind you and lift your body up bringing feet flat to floor forming a bridge. Return to start position.
5) Up dog, down dog

(Optional 6th rite for those practicing celibacy): Stand straight, exhale fully, bringing hands to knees. Continue holding your breath exhaled, return to standing, place your hands on your hips, suck navel towards spine, and shrug your shoulders up. Hold as long as possible.

Uh, I am not really sure what to think of this. Although I know people who practice the "five Tibetan rite" everyday ans swear by them, this story of how they were shared with the western world sounds a bit like a fairy tale. I fully believe they could be beneficial, but I'm not sure they can take eliminate the effects of natural aging. the chapter on mantrams seems like a re-write of some of the more recent methods of using affirmations. Or perhaps this is where the idea came from. At any rate, it was an interesting read if you are trying to get a well-rounded view of how movement, breathing, meditation, and chanting can be beneficial.

I'm not sure about the techniques they do in the book. I'm sure they would work, but they seem time consuming. I got so dizzy trying one of them that I was sick for the rest of the day. Oh well, I guess I will live with my wrinkles and gray hair.

It's a good book for some who are not well versed athletes. The exercisers called RITES( the 6 mentioned in this part)are known in various forms to those of us who do exercise regularly and know about such techniques which are important to focus inward.

I like it.

Happy to learn the secrets of staying "young" forever.
But first, start with "thinking" as you are already young.
Cause you are, you just need to remember and activate it :)

I bought a story bundle and this was part of a course run by Stephen Barnes called ‘The Ancient Child’.
It is a positive thought and behaviour thingy based on doing the exercises described in this old book. Five Rites done a maximum number of times, and a sixth - which seems to be a conversion of sexual energy into brain power. [abstinence?]
The story is written as if the MC learnt the secret of life from an old General who heads off to Tibet and returns looking much younger and fitter. Half his age, according to the story.
Colonel Bradford’s account of what transpired after being admitted to the Lamasery sounded like a fairy tale. I only wish that time and space permitted me to set down here all of his experiences; the interesting practices of the Lamas, their culture, and their utter indifference to the work-a-day world. There were no real old men there. To his surprise the Lamas considered Colonel Bradford a quite novel sight, for it had been a long time since they had seen anyone who looked as old as he. The Lamas good-naturedly referred to the Colonel as “The Ancient One.”
(Page 7).

All from exercise and deep breathing.
First published in 1939, I guess it shows that yoga and mindfulness are not new fads to the Western world.
It’s hard to rate, so I’ll go in the middle

Now to do them…

Not recommending. Half of the book is the introduction, then the importance of deep full breathing and 5 short exercise descriptions, then suggestions to invite people who are older than 50 years old to do such exercises...

There are some serious logical misconceptions here and there.

The last part of the book is pretty aggressive and going against the science, e.g. scaring the reading that skipping excersizing more than one day a week will start destroying the body without the chance to heal it again. Another one: our thoughts results and actions (physical body state) are deeply saved in DNA forever and given furthure.

The book recommends not to use cold water before or after exercises.

The book mentions sexual energy and switching the conscious states, but these pages are very blurry, sounds like they are here only for book marketing reasons, and also making the reader fear to be fully destroyed.

The thought about superhuman and total success by "you make the desicion once and forever" and the thought of a tiny mistake makes the process irrivertible make the book a total nonsense.

The book also mentions a mono diet, along the nonsense of sugar that can't be harmful (sugar is a poison!), max one egg a day etc.

To control the voice pitch, aiming for lower frequences and full body resonance when speaking.

Book just for fun, but rather dangerous than smart.

Benefits of yoga and the power of positive thinking in a nutshell

While the content is presented as a discovered secret to the fountain of youth, the benefits of yoga and positive thinking are well documented. I believe that people who try these things will indeed achieve the benefit of being more youthful and happy! The exercises (rites) are not the crazy hard ones, but some people will have to do the best they can and they will improve daily until they can do them, and they will benefit rather quickly.

I don’t think the author intended to present a “nutshell” version of Yoga and positive thinking. His method for attaining the knowledge was more adventurous. However, if you were to ask a yoga expert to pick 5 doable exercises that would impart the biggest benefit to the average middle aged person, and ask a positive thinking expert to build a single exercise to kick start positive thinking, you would have the content of this book except for the diet suggestions.

I didn’t really agree with the diet suggestions, but at some point I may try them and see what happens. Regardless, I think this is a good book.

Very uniquely written story about the discovery of an ancient Tibetan exercise routine of 5 movements, claimed to restore youth and vitality through activating the chakras

This is either a very cleverly written ploy and the author has us all fooled, or it's true and we should all be doing this exercise

Either way, I was gifted this by someone I admire, who practices the 5 Tibetan Rites on and off. This has been a really nice morning routine to do so far these first few weeks (even if the first exercise is a funny one) and I really do feel quite awake after it, which is great because I rarely drink coffee

As for its purported benefits of youth and vitality, we shall see... The rest of the book's teachings seem a bit far fetched, regarding diet and sexual power, which is why I knocked it down to 4 stars

A dedicated academic friend of mine, who is deeply passionate about science, recommended these five rites to me as a transformative practice. If it weren't for her, I might never have picked up this book. While I wouldn't rate the book highly—since it reads and feels like a Western fairy tale—the strength of her recommendation compels me to try the rites and conduct further research on them.

One aspect that particularly struck me is that, despite numerous testimonials in the book and across the internet claiming miraculous results from these rites, there appears to be no scientific research conducted on the subject. Additionally, not a single study has been done to disprove the benefits of these practices either. This absence of evidence adds an intriguing layer of mystery to the rites.

Easy to follow directions for the 5 rites. Some of the dietary suggestions at the end seem nonsensical and that did dampen my enthusiasm for the book. For example, it said plant oils are good and animal oils are bad (except butter). I might be wrong about animal oils being good, but I think that making a blanket statement that plant oils are good is dangerous. I don't think this is offense in judgment should affect the judgment of the 5 rites much, but it certainly doesn't help. There is also a good deal of filler material here and I might want to find a more succinct source (possibly online).

I had never heard of the Tibetan Five Rites until a friend mentioned it to me. This small book explains everything quite nicely. Its based on the Chakras and the exercises themselves take about 15-20 mins to perform.

Because of my yoga background the exercises are quite manageable. I've been doing them for the past few days and look forward to seeing what changes occur for me. The exercises flow nicely one into the other and are fun to do.

I'm glad I discovered this gem, no matter what the results. This book connects nicely to Spalding's Life and Teachings of the Masters. Having read a few of the books in that series made this one more understandable.

Very easy read. I finished it in two days, but could easily be finished in one. I have to say I was impressed with the content. I had no idea what to expect, since so many books have been written on the secrets of rejuvenation, I thought it could easily be one of those, common and forgettable, but the truth is it left me a bit surprised. Overall I wouldn’t know what rating to give the author on this piece of writing until I try and prove his excercises. Very traditional, but interesting. Worth the easy read.
