I Love These Stories every year. they are uplifting and can really Cheer you up if you had a bad day. Its A Must read for any Christian. Merry Christmas.
This was the first year I've ever read these kinds of books. They really helped with my daily life and the challenges I face. I think these are amazing.
A friend of mine actually gave this book to me at the beginning of the year, thinking I would enjoy it. She was right. It was the perfect supplement to my daily scripture reading. There is a devotion for each day, written by different authors. Each day focuses on a scripture, has a story or lesson that goes along with the scripture, a short prayer, and more scripture references that connect. I was able to find some new favorite verses while reading these devotions. Some of the authors even did series throughout the year. One of my favorites was “What the Saints Have Taught Me.” I loved learning more about Christian Saints and their examples and how this author tried to apply it to her life. This year was their 40th anniversary. They do one every year, so if you are interested, definitely grab one for next year.
My mother and grandmother have read the Guideposts devotional for many years. In 2016, my mother gave me a copy of the devotional book as well. As an NT Wright fan, I thought I'd find Guideposts a little too fluffy, but lo and behold, every once in awhile there was just the message I needed to hear! I even found myself sharing some of the devotional thoughts with friends. For 2017, I've included my mother-in-law in our Guideposts "devotional club." I don't know if I'll be one of those decades-long Guideposts readers, but for now, especially with my grandmother's passing in the fall, those sappy, sincere, and insightful devotions are just what I need some days.
Guideposts are always hit-or-miss for me. Sometimes, they really inspire me, and other times, I wonder why a particular reading is even in there, because it really doesn't seem to have much spiritual content at all. There are some authors in this year's book that I really like, and others that I don't care for at all. I think last year's volume was much better, as a whole, than this year's. Of course, I have next year's ready to go, compliments of my mother's yearly Christmas gift, which I greatly appreciate.
The readings are never extremely deep, and frequently, if not always, reflect life experiences of the writers. Never deep, but at the same, amazingly profound, at times. My favorite authors in this year's volume are Andrew and Julia Attaway, Brian Doyle (he was my father's favorite), Katie Ganshert, Julie Garmon, Rick Hamlin, Brock and Pam Kidd, Carol Knapp, and Carol Kuykendall. I'm sure I've left one or two out.
I look forward to seeing what experiences the 2017 volume will bring.
As always, a wonderful way to start my morning. I'd recommend the Daily Guideposts devotionals to anyone. I believe even a non-believer can still find inspiration and thought provoking things to consider and new ways to look at the world and the events in it. God is good all the time, even when we find it hard to understand how. This series has helped me year after year for the past five years to understand that more clearly, and that is a wonderful blessing for a simple book to provide.
Quite frankly, I couldn't live without my Daily Guideposts. I've been a reader since about 1992. If you've never experienced a Daily Guideposts devotion, you are really missing out!
