City of Book One

My name is Octavius Septimus Stalk, but my friends call me Oss. I live in the City of Keys, a town of gears, keys, locks, and wonder. Our forefathers banished magic long ago, bolted the doors and locked everything up tight to keep people out and the town’s secrets in. Four Lock Lords control what information is left, and everyone else is left struggling to survive.

Despite what Thorne, my naïve lover, thinks, I was an orphan, but not a victim. When I walked the streets at the age of twelve, I learned fast where to steal the best food, how to use my daggers, and where to hide my would-be attackers’ bodies. No one suspected me of such violence. No one knew then or now that I have magic inside me.

Now, power-hungry men intend to release the magic for their own benefit—at the expense of the rest of the city. We will stop them, even if Thorne must battle his own kin, even if I must reveal my hidden talents and the role I seem destined to play.

Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.

When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.

During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.

Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.

She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres..

She also writes under the name Mikela Q. Chase

Belens Audio Book Review

Now, this, ladies and gentlemen is how you do Fantasy right.

This story is absolutely amazing!

The world building is startlingly impressive. The characters are smart, funny, ruthless, vulnerable, and real. The storytelling is rich and thoroughly entertaining. The narration was hands-down terrific and pitch perfect.

and that's how it's done

Octavius Septimus Stalk (my friends call me "Oss") is one of the best characters I've read in a long time. From the first few minutes I was hooked. It opens with a bang, I was immediately and absolutely immersed in the narration, and I loved every minute.

Boom

I can hardly wait for the next installment!

I loved the book. From page one it hooked me. I love Oss and his Thorne. So, there you go, I loved it, and if you like Amber Kell, then you will love this book. If you've never tried Amber Kell, if you've ever wanted a longer book book from her - then this is the book for you!

Also, LOVE the cover art

Important note on this review:

So you all know I write with Amber Kell. You all know that we have this close friendship. You all know I love taking the piss out of her... So yes, this post can be taken as being wildly biased... on the other hand...

Some time back Amber said to me, "I want to write a steampunk story and I have this whole world in my head."

Well, she may not have said exactly that, and of course it was said with an American accent and not British as I write it *sniggers*.

What Amber does best, what her greatest talent is, is her world building. Her paranormals sell like wooooahhhhh and she is known for those. So all in all, any steampunk she writes, with elements of magic and otherworlds, will always do well. She doesn't need me to pimp her book, but I wanted to share how I felt about it in my usual way where i only give a one sentence review!

Then she said *imagine the accent*, "It's going to a be a long book and I know exactly how it all pans out." Believe me if you saw her notebook you would understand that she is NOT lying there! This is from the woman who has planned 26 books in her Moonpack series... LOL...

So she sent me the first draft and I wasn't quite knowing what to expect, as I can't say I've read a lot of steampunk (or actually completely know what it is - LOL) I think *hesitates* Jordan Hawk's W&G books have a steampunkish feel, I think, but no one quote me, or tell Jordan I said so.

This was an ok read for me. Normally don't read steampunk but because I love reading Amber shifter books, I picked this book. This was a clockwork-magical world with elements of steampunk it wasn't a lot of twist in this book. I did like both of these characters Oss was very secretive, but Thorne loves him. He gives Oss everything: love, food, safety, and as much as he hates it-space. With enemies closing in and 2 cities destruction ticking down, Oss must gather is friends and release his secrets and trust in that love while he faces his duty. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling.

The concept of this was interesting - steampunk, magic, romance. The reality did not deliver.

Repetitive:

There was a lot of repetition in this, and it really needed to be trimmed down so the story could move along. This was especially noticable when it came to MC1 (name? idk) thinking about himself. I get it, you're tough, you have knives, you talk to people, you have super lock powers, stfu and get on with it. Show me these things instead of telling me constantly! There was some showing, but mostly it was constant telling.

Romance:

The book opens with a sex scene, and the MC emotionally running away from Thorne. We don't really see Thorne again much in the third of the book I read (until like 34%). I started to question what the romance was. Was it even supposed to be Thorne? We spent more time with the key trainee, but there was no romance there either. It was confusing and made the romance, which apparently is supposed to be with Thorne, unbelievable. There was no emotional connection for me.

The complete lack of connection I felt between the two meant that the pseudo betrayal scene (lol at 34%) was completely flat to me. I didn't care about the MCs, I didn't buy their relationship, so the emotions were just blah.

Characters:

There's a lot of characters. I was never really convinced to care about any of them, so they got really muddled up. When the one keeper key guy died, I was like "okey dokey", and then the MC was like "this is a horrible personal tragedy" ....guess it was an important side character. oops.

We spend a fair amount of time with the new trainee...Rubin? But he never really gets a lot of development. Naive noble blood, doesn't really want the job...but we don't learn more. I was curious about him.

World building:

Lacking. Infodumping, yet not really that much new information being imparted eventually. A lot of it interrupted mid conversation or mid action, which took away from the scenes. Somehow key (lol) information was still missing.

Writing:

This was choppy for me, especially between scenes and chapters. It felt a little cobbled together at times, more interested in getting certain scenes in than continuity or developing the characters and their relationships.

Overall, it was meh, I don't have the patience to read the same thoughts over and over again without something to carry me through. There's potential here, but the lack of forward plot movement, relationships between any of the characters -let alone the main (alleged) romance! - meant that there was nothing to hold my attention.

I always love me some well done fantasy or science fiction that centers around a gay/bi couple. It could also be well done romance with science fiction or fantasy settings. I decided to read more books from my TBR this year and this fit the bill. Only, no not really - if you want me to buy into Oz and Thorne loving each other, maybe show me something more than a sex scene in the first chapter. Have nothing against a couple starting with the hook up, but if Oz' problem apparently not being able to tell Thorne how he really feels, once again showing that they really do love each other would be nice. As it stood from the very beginning I was deeply indifferent to them as a couple.

Adventure part was shaping up to be interesting enough, and magic that Oz possessed was cool, but the problem was that this year I read a phenomenal book where main character's talent was in a nutshell also being able to make inanimate things do what she wanted and she could open all kind of stuff too. It was a different setting and a different story, but her magic being in a sense similar to Oz' caused me to constantly think about it and it was done with so much more finesse if you ask me. Yes, I know I am not supposed to grade book in comparison to a completely different book. That's why I am leaving it with no rating. DNF after six chapters.

This story is told in first person from Oss's point of view. He's a former street urchin and a thief who keeps his magical abilities secret because those who have it tend to vanish in the dead of night, as magic is banned and tightly locked away. Oss is now one of the city's key keepers and also in an established relationship with Thorne, a city guard who comes from wealth and nobility (he's related to one of the four Lock Lords!) and whose star is on the rise. The plot moves at a quick pace, so we're not bogged down, and there's a good balance between witty dialogue, fast-packed action, tense and thrilling moments, and sensual scenes.

The characters, especially the main heroes, are three-dimensional and fun to read about. Oss is more of an anti-hero, reluctant to be cast in a heroic role to save the world, and he hasn't told anyone how his magic allows him unlock any locks he comes into contact with. Oss's boyfriend Thorne is the more attractive, suave, and outgoing. He's warm and kind and kind of naive but he doesn't retreat from dangers or challenges, and he never abandons Oss which I really appreciated. Their scenes together range from warm friendship to hot and heavy. In fact, this starts out pretty sexy and sensuous, but beyond that there's a good story to be told. The relationship conflict is pretty mild, mainly Thorne wishing for them to be a couple, and Oss doubting true love could exist in a dystopian world. But... there's also the fact that both men harbor big secrets from one another, so the prophecy coming to pass forces them to be honest, which creates a schism they must resolve together.

Though there's sex in this book, this is more an adventure in a steampunk and fantasy setting than a romance. The world-building is done extremely well, it's detailed and intricate without being overrun by useless info or smothered with info dumps. The story's background is set by a prophecy that speaks of magic being released into the City of Locks, magic and steampunk colliding, and our heroes end up caught in the middle of that strife. This is something of a genre mashup, so if that's not your thing.... For myself, I thought the mix of genres--adventure, fantasy, steampunk, fairytales, and erotic romance--was intriguing and certainly unique. I will definitely be checking out the next in the series (hoping there is one to be had!). In short, the City of Keys comes to life like one of the characters, and I longed to know more, see and hear and feel more.

You get a complete story here but, this being only the opening salvo for a new series, several things are left in the air. Yet none of that hampered my enjoyment and satisfaction of reading this tale of fascinating world and its people. I highly recommend giving this a read for everyone who likes their established couples hot and super-sexy, their adventures thrilling and dangerous, and their fantasy worls well crafted and full of delicious details and coloring outside the box.

Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.

Growing up in the City of Keys wasn’t easy, especially if you lived in one of the lower districts but despite being alone at a young age, Oss still managed to survive. Now working for the Key Masters, and helping to keep the city running, Oss’s life is better than ever…add in his lover Thorne and it could easily be said his life is the best its ever been. Oss has a secret, however, one that will reshape the City of Keys and its inhabitants forever. There are powerful forces at work and more than one person that doesn’t want to see him succeed and if Oss wants to live to see another day, let alone to fulfill his purpose, he’s going to need to do the one thing he never has before; open up and trust.

Keys was an absolutely amazing read! I would label this as primarily fantasy with some steampunk elements but whatever the label, from start to finish the story was fantastic. Each character was unique though Oss will probably forever be my favorite; he wasn’t afraid to do what was necessary, even if others found it distasteful, and even as jaded as he is at times, he’s still willing to help others. Thorne I liked for a variety of reasons though it was the fact that he didn’t care were Oss grew up or what societal class he belonged to that made me enjoy his character so much. Every main character in the book also has some sort of secret and while some were easy to figure out, a couple still managed to catch me off guard and it was great!

Things are set up perfectly to go into the sequel and I just can’t wait; the story was the draw with this one, not the sex, and I was totally enthralled with both the characters and the setting from start to finish. This story was absolutely amazing! The word building was spectacular and the story was so imaginative and entertaining. I just loved every aspect of this and I know I’ll be re-reading it a lot. I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to reading the next book; I have a feeling that this series will become one of my all time favorites. I seriously can’t recommend this one enough.

3.5 stars This is hard to rate, because I really really liked it. The world building was unique and intriguing, a city of locks where magic was locked away 1000 years ago. But there's a certain something about it that almost feels YA. That's not an insult, I've read some phenomenal YA. But for a MM story with a pre-existing relationship that frequently alludes to sex... I didn't get pulled in emotionally. To the relationship or the turmoil of this world.

I liked Oss a lot, he's a wonderful character full of sharp edges with soft little spots shining through that he tries to hide and are more prevalent than he himself thinks. His lover, Thorn, could have been more developed. I liked him, but we didn't really get to know him too well (perhaps a result of this being a pre-existing relationship), he's more a compliment to Oss. And despite Oss saying he's prickly and untrusting, he (seemingly suddenly) is all about the Thorn.

Again, the story itself was full of twists and turns. Interesting lore and prophesy. But the villain was very one dimensional. And despite them nearly dying several times, there was no sense of peril. My heart wasn't pumping. I didn't fear that any main characters would be harmed or killed in the making of this book.

But I am invested. I liked the world. And I liked Oss. I will most definitely be continuing with this series. Since I started with an audio version, I will be continuing with audio, I'm a big fan of consistency like that. The audio version was done well. At first I wasn't sure that Oss's voice fit him, but after the first chapter it didn't bother me at all. The narration was done well, and I think my lack of a raving review with regards to the narration is due to the same lack of peril I mentioned previously. I just didn't get sucked in and lost the way I like, but I don't think the narrator could have done anything to change that.

If you like book with magic and a steam-punky vibe that take place in a new and different world, then I think this'll be up your alley. I think reading or listening would be equally satisfying.

Okie doke. So I’ll start by saying that there are things about this book that are absolutely amazing and other things that just didn’t work for me.
The good bits:

I am absolutely awed by this world. I love the way the author created it from keys. It’s a lock-filled, gear-powered world of supposedly non-magical people. Even the jobs revolve around keys and the like. It’s steampunk meets fairy tale and I like it.
I love Thorne. I mean, give me a guy who doesn’t back down and doesn’t give up because he knows best and I will fall head over heels (almost) every time. And that is Thorne exactly.
The prophecy, while obvious who the key players in it are, is crafted very well to fit not only the world, but the journey and tone of the story.
There are parts of Oss that I really liked. He’s the anti-hero of this world, a little crazy and murdery, but still likable. He knows where he came from and even though he’s crawled out of the hole, he doesn’t look down on what he used to be or the way he grew up.

I really loved the world this author created. It's a fantasy world where all locks are controlled by the Key Lords and key keepers. As a result they control the entire city and it has created a dramatic separation between the rich and the poor. Oss and Thorne are on opposite sides of this divide yet still love each other. The imagery was well done and I could envision the shop owners waiting every morning for a key keeper to arrive to unlock their business. The two main characters were enjoyable and I liked both of them. I also really liked that they were an established couple when the story begins. There was also a host of side characters that were interesting and the set up for the next two books was good. My only real complaint is there are many parts, especially at the beginning, where the prose is very purple. It is ridiculously flowery and overly descriptive. I wasn't sure at first if I was going to like the book because of that but I ended up liking the world enough to over look it. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series.

I did this on audio and I enjoyed the narrator a lot. I thought he did a good job on all the voices and I will probably do the next one on audio also.

Like The Parasol Protectorate, Keys is a steampunk/dystopian world all of its own. It grabs you with its metal arms, embracing you, and taking you deep into the City of Keys. Kell has created a dynamic legend with Keys and I am still suffering a bit of a book hangover because I didn't want it to end. Never fear though as this is a complete story. Thanks for that madame author!

Oss is a fantastic narrator and while I was a bit mistrustful of Thorne, he slowly won me over by the end of the book. I loved the secondary characters, all of them. They are full of life and passion and that includes the bad guys. The city itself is a major character, too, and I sped through the story because it was entirely engaging and a wonder to read.

I am eagerly awaiting the next adventures of Oss and his friends. Amalia better make a reappearance, just saying.

Can’t get into this one.

The opening felt weak. The characters were already in a relationship with 0 chemistry, so that felt flat for me too. Plot full of clichés, pointless descriptions of what food is on their plate, an MC who takes every opportunity to remind us of how tough they are and how they grew up a street rat and that their life is so full of secrets that you should totally be interested in, right??

description
I got halfway!! …but I’m just can’t pay attention anymore and don’t need the ending.

The writing itself isn’t bad, but this could use a whole lot of editing and inspiration.

_Keys_ is a fantasy book by Amber Kell and the audio version is narrated by Derrick McClain. The story follows Oz as he is reluctantly thrust into being the hero of a thousand year-old prophecy.

From what I've been able to tell, this book is an anomaly in Kell's body of work. She seems to focus mainly on writing urban fantasy with ridiculously overbearing alpha males (like toxic masculinity to the max). Here we have the big, buff captain (or something) who is kind, gentle, and supportive. It's honestly quite refreshing. The main character, Oz, is prickly and dangerous and not at all the sort of character who would allow himself to be controlled by someone.

The book is also a fantasy work with a surprising deep and detailed world. And the world-building is deftly done without any cumbersome info dumps. The political angle to the story doesn't try to be overly complicated (and thus irritating). Overall, its an enjoyable work of fantasy that has some sex but isn't overly focused on the romance. Some of the pacing can be a bit slow in the middle.

The second book is in progress as of 2016 and I do hope she finishes (and gets it out in audio).

Derrick McClain is a favourite of mine and he does a good job with the story.

I absolutely loved this book. It had a very steampunk feel to it that I really liked. Octavius was wonderful as a MC. He was definitely not your typical hero. He was a bit blood thirsty and didn’t hesitate to use what ever means necessary to get through life. Thorne on the other hand was his exact opposite. I loved that they complemented each other perfectly. It didn’t bother me that Thorne and Oss had a pre-established relationship. I actually prefer that to the insta-love that is so prevalent in these types of stories.

The story itself was really good. I think my only problem was the story was left open ended and I really want to know what happens yet. Considering that I bought this book early 2016 and there still isn’t a sequel, I’m afraid that we may never knows what happens after the conclusion of this particular story. That being said, it did end in a good place.

If you like a bit of steampunk mixed with magic, I think you will really like this story. Highly recommended.

Rushed, no kidding, and the transition from one scene to another felt forced. But, what made me laugh is the part where it seemed like this story wanted to fit every romatic cliché, and more besides, in every sentence. It should have been cheesy or something but it's like I'm looking at two lovers professing their love in front of a crowd in a manner that made it awkward and embarrassing. I lost count on how many times I laughed preceded by a face palm.

Also, I noticed the constant repetition of some lines. 'Destroy everything, kill everyone, wouldn't care, touch my beloved and your dead, etc.' I mean, overdramatic much? Yeah, you're a cold hearted killer and cares for a single person only, we get it, move on, whatever, you don't have to repeat it over and over on almost every page.

It got tiring, but still a good laugh.

This was great fun.

Oss is a delightfully feisty first person narrator, and seeing his city through his eyes was wonderful. His relationship with Thorne was also wonderfully done, they're adorably well balanced.

Interesting fantasy world, I hope that the series really does continue!

Some Favorite Quotes:
"Hate is a strong emotion I save for people who deserve it.... I resent you. That's different."

"Sometimes we have to deal the hand the Lady of the Locks gives us."
"And sometimes we have to know when to give her the finger and run."

Whilst this story is simplistic in its ability to extract our heroes from any situation, its a lot of fun and well worth the read. The characters have interesting depths; their upbringing shaping through necessity. MC Thorn was a great foil for MC Oz (Octavius).

Narrated by Derrick McClain- 4 stars. Really enjoy his voice/s and appreciate the ease of listening.

3.5 stars rounding it down to 3 because of some inconsistencies like Oss's attitude towards his relationship with Thorne and the bizarre addition of fairies and the like.

Still I'll snatch the next book immediately, doubt I'll re-read them.

This was fantastic! Keys is a totally unique and intriguing dystopian steam punk book with fascinating characters. Witty dialogue. Lovable misfit characters. Magic. There’s just so much to love about this book. I’m feeling some raving coming on because this book was so damn good. And there’s so much more to come!

Book one of this new series features the lovable but ruthless once street rat turned Key Keeper, Oss. He’s worked his way into a respectable full time paying position. Oss came from the 4th district where all the poorest folks live. People don’t always have homes or food to eat. Desperation often leads them to criminal actions. And those more powerful come there to prey upon it’s inhabitants because nobody cares about them. Oss may not look it but he’s fierce and smart. Growing up on the streets forces a kid to grow up fast. Oss is grown up now. He keeps his nose out of trouble these days. He’s sleeping with a super sexy guard named Thorne who wants them to be more than lovers.Thorne is rich and his brother Duke Lear. One of the Four Lock Lords. Meaning one of the four most powerful men in the City of Keys. Oss comes from the streets and has done some really bad things. None of which he regrets because he’s a survivor and some people deserve to die. But he’s not the kind of guy Thorne will settle down with. Or so he thinks. Thorne is pretty sure he wants Oss forever.

Things get kind of weird and Oss learns there’s a prophecy to release all the magic locked away below the city. And of course he’s right in the middle of it. Oss has a secret that only one other person knows. He can open any lock just by asking it to. In a city of keys and locks that’s a pretty powerful tool to have at your disposal. It’s also a reason to keep it a secret. The city of Keys is a town where the rich are powerful and the rest are at their mercy. Oss has no desire to be someone’s tool to use.

So I totally loved this book. Reading this book from the POV of Oss was a pure delight. He’s funny and loyal to those few friends he has. Smart and calculating. I love how bloodthirsty and unapologetic for it he is. In his mind, some people just deserve to die and he has no problem doing it if needed. He says he only looks out for himself, but as the book goes on, you see he’s got a few people he looks after. So he’s not the hardened loner he likes to think of himself as.

Thorne is big and strong and totally adores Oss. There’s a line in the book saying only Thorne can get away with saying these sweet and sappy things to Oss and it’s so true. I loved Oss and Thorne together. So sweet and sexy even when everything in their lives is a mess, they find love with each other. Their playful dialogue is pretty damn good too.

The world building was awesome. I’ve never read anything quite like this. The city and the men who run it were pretty fascinating to read about. So much corruption and greed you were definitely rooting for the underdog. And don’t know who you can trust so everyone is a possible threat. The imagery is vivid without bogging you down with details. You see everything as Oss does his thing so there’s never a dull moment. The book moves at a fast pace and I didn’t ever want to put it down.

Obviously I highly recommend this one. The characters are intriguing and complex. The story completely engaging. I can’t wait to see what comes next. Surely Duke Lear and Maybre get a chance at love? How will magic effect the city? What will become of Alfie? How will Oss handle his new status in the city? Just a few things I’m dying to know! Great book.

Amber Kell has written a genuine winner with this sparkling steampunk-ish story of Octavius, a lowborn orphan with a secret in a royal-ruled city of locks. This book is the first in what I, for one, hope is a very long series. Wonderful characterization plus a darn good adventure kept me eagerly turning the pages. And whenever I had to put the book down, I got that warm fuzzy feeling of anticipation, like a delicious mouthwatering desert was awaiting my return. Oss makes for one compelling street-smart ruffian and it was a joy to enjoy this sharp-witted, steamster with a heart of gold.

I don’t want to steal any of the wonder of a story whose tantalizing onion-peel revelations are part of its spunky charm, so I’ll tell you what made this a winner for me. First would be the excellent characters. Hot lovers Oss and Thorne are terrific as the main characters in this tale, with Oss being front and center, but the supporting characters are beyond captivating. Each member of the intriguing supporting cast hold a vivid and detailed role in this book, but the enchanting quirks of their shadowy personas fascinated and made me hungry for their secrets. I can’t wait to read the next installment of this series.

The second thing that made this book a great read for me is the pacing. In my opinion, it was perfect. Great narrative and stimulating dialogue are interspersed winningly with action scenes of both the lovemaking and stealth-and-fight variety. Page-turner and fast-paced are appropriate praise phrases for Keys and add to its outstanding whole.

And the third thing that warmed my heart about this tale is what I’m calling the Oss Brotherhood. I’m talking about the lovely bromance Oss has with his circle of street-smart misfits. While the alliance between Oss and his brothers is only bound by a wordless oath, the loyalty, support, and love between this “unband” was tangible and made me cheer, “Bravo” and “Encore” to this lovely fledgling series. Steam, spunk, and adventure… I highly recommend this book for everyone.

Thank you, Amber Kell, for penning one out of the ballpark… may everyone catch it!

Oss is in charge of some of the keys that help keep the magic of the City of Keys locked down safe. He might actually be more than that….

His boyfriend is Thorne, a sweetheart, who will do anything for Oss.

When the magic that Oss holds within rises to the fore, the entire city faces major changes and nobody knows what will happen when the Master Lock is opened.

I have to say – I’m not a steampunk fan – BUT I’m a total Keys fan!

This is less romance and more adventure than I usually like – thus the 4 star rating rather than 5 – but the world building is phenomenal, the characters are three-dimensional and fascinating (I love Oss’ anti-hero role and his adherence to his own unique moral code) and the adventure is fun and moves us along at a fast pace.

Thorne and Oss are well matched (good foils for the other) and sweet.

If you’re looking for a book focused on romance – this isn’t it – but a romantic tale with a fair amount of feels and a fantastically unique world – this is your book!

Audio

Derrick McClain is a great narrator – especially for this story. His style is crisp and clean and well suited to the world in Keys. He makes it clear who is speaking and really infuses emotion into the story. What I like most is how easy he is to listen to for hours and how much he brings a story alive.

For both the narration and the audio 4.5 of 5 stars

Audiobook Review:

This is the first part of a three part story. I really enjoyed this fantasy story with a steampunk twist. I had really great, 3 dimensional characters, a sweet romance, a mystery and some action and intrigue. Pretty high body count as well, if you care about that sort of thing. The story is told from Octavius’ POV. He is a former “street rat” who is trying to turn over a new leaf through his new job as a “key keeper” in the city of Keys. What no one knows (not even Oss) is he and his friends are much more than that. And that realization and future implications for other books is the heart of the story. Although, the romance between Octavius and Thorne is really sweet and satisfying, it is really not the point of the book. It is kind of like icing on a great story cake. This is my first book by Amber Kell and I really look forward to the next two. Although we get a satisfying ending, the story is not complete.

Derrick McClain does an excellent job narrating this story. His characterizations and multiple voices were great. I did wish he had pushed through a little more emotion with some of the scenes, such as when Oss believed that Thorne betrayed him. It sounded a bit flat. But overall, I really enjoyed it.

A full length novel from Amber Kell, sweet. She has always been one of my favorite authors, especially when I want a pick me up. She always has of the best wise ass characters that give great snark and one liners. This book is no different.

Oss is definitely all that. He is has crawled his way out of the streets until a job as a key keeper in a dying city. He is far from innocent and is in fact a very deadly foe when crossed. He is just living his life and falling in love with Thorne, a city guard who has secrets of his own.

Oss really tells the story. Can I just say I totally loved his inner thoughts and well as his conversations with others. Thorne actually pissed me off a few times, but by the end redeemed himself. Plus together these two are very sexy together.

The world Amber Kell has created is creative and intriguing. I found myself drawn into the story from the start. There is a lot going on throughout and the pace was fast. Secrets, prophecies and magic are revealed.

I enjoyed the interaction of not only Oss and Thorne, but also the secondary characters. I can’t wait to read their stories.

Overall, a well written, interesting, and enjoyable read.
