❝Love is love, no matter what body parts we have.❞

I'm overwhelmed! I'm ecstatic! I'm over the moon over this book! DEFINING US is Zoey's BEST WORK yet! I've never been more proud of an author than I am right now. Derrick's 69 Bottles Series is her best series she's ever written. Each and every character has touched my heart and soul in some way. But there is a special place in there for Calvin and Eric. Ever since the beginning I've been drawn to them. I'm guessing the author didn't even know what she had planned for them at the time, but I knew, I just knew, they would have a spectacular story. I finished this book a couple of days ago and I'm still rubbing my chest, trying to sooth the ache of their journey. This story of unimaginable pain, personal growth, and conquering fear will tear you apart and carefully mend you back together. It's been a while since a book has completely overwhelmed me to the point of not being able to get it out of my head. DEFINING US, Calvin and Eric's story will forever have a piece of my heart.
Bruises always fade away, but the love they had for each other was permanent. There is struggle. There is pain. There is conflict. There is also compassion, devotion, tenderness, and friendship.

❝Do you ever look at someone and all you can see when you look at them is something that can only be described as 'home'?❞

I want a love like this. I want that sense of 'home'. You have to ask yourself, "Is it worth it?" Is this kind of love worth all of the pain and suffering? If you ask Calvin and Eric? HELL YES it is! With every page came a new emotion, and with every new emotion came a new sense of appreciation that the author had the guts to write a romance like this. Every word, every chapter, every moment in this book was full of so much heart. This book was a long time coming and it hit every single one of my buttons. All I have left to say is, THANK YOU! Thank you Zoey Derrick for doing Calvin and Eric's story justice. I've never wished more happiness on a book couple than I do with these two. Bravo my friend. Bravo.

Being part of the rock band 69 Bottles, Eric Richardson(Peacock) has finally come out to the band. He has had no problems being gay. His family is supportive and the band has no problems either. While Calvin Caldwell (Mouse) was raised very different in a Podunk town from Eric, he can't give in to his feelings for a male or female. His demons are real and always on his mind, he can't be who he wants to because of them. When Eric confronts Calvin more than once, Calvin keeps putting him off and they really need to talk so Calvin can tell Eric about his past. And oh my what a past it is, you will be crying your eyes out because his past will break your heart. Will Eric run for the hills when Calvin tells him the truth about what happened to him? Can Calvin tell him all of his past without pushing him away? This is a fantastic story that will make you laugh, cry, want to murder someone and finally fall in love with love. I just have to say that M/M content is not something I read a lot of but guess what, I couldn't put this one down. This one can be read as a stand-alone but I highly recommend reading the whole series and fall in love with everything that is the 69 Bottles series. ~A rock band, A tour bus, One wild ride…~

Defining Us: The Calvin & Eric Story (69 Bottles)
by Zoey Derrick

I can not describe how AMAZING Defining Us has been. Not only does it have that Zoey Derrick "sizzle" she brings to her stories, but it also deals with true heart breaking issues. It is the most emotionally charged books of the 69 Bottles Series. Calvin and Eric's story is one not to be missed..

What a ride this entire series has been.

Oh Zoey, please tell me there is another book w/ this rock band. I actually read the whole series just to get to this last one which is a M/M. (First three books were M/M/F, next two M/F.) I figured to do it justice, I really should read them all and I'm glad I did.

The characters really grow on you and it's awesome to see them throughout all the books. It made me wish I was in a band, knew someone that was in a band, that I could sneak backstage somewhere, somehow.... but alas I have to live through my memories from the last concert I attended -Theory of a Deadman. :)

I could use more on Calvin and Eric! We need a one year follow up on them. My ideas are: A Valentine’s Day novella, an Easter novella, a Memorial Day novella (ha!)…... Yes I’m rambling and digressing but you get the idea. They need a teensy bit more attention.

I don't want to give anything away about their story but this was more emotional for me out of all 6 books. Calvin's past is so horrific about what he went through when his father found out he was gay. I have no words. Eric is so much more patient and understanding than what you would expect after all the things these two work through.

They need to figure out together if they can work through Calvin’s past and if there is any possible chance at a future.

If you skip the series and go right to Calvin and Eric’s story, you will know what’s going on for the most part. You won't understand some of the side characters and how they make up the rock family they've created which is a great part of this series.

Writing this review is bitter sweet, one because its over, but two because it was probably one of the most heart breaking, heart wrenching, killing me its mending my heart back together all at the same time kind of book.
The emotions, the feels, I can't even describe it all.
First I <3'd this whole series to pieces and sad to see it end. But knowing we get the Bold Security men to follow helps soften the blow.

Ok so we know Eric is gay and in love with his best friend and band mate Calvin (Mouse). Only Calvin can't and won't accept he feels the same.
This freaking broke my heart everything they alluded to this in the other books. But now knowing his reasons I want to hug him.
I don't want to give away to much lets just say small minded people in a small town are to blame but mostly his fathers small mindedness.
So Calvin is literally stuck in his head and Eric is showing his heart on his sleeve.
It gets tricky because Calvin is at his end and needs to stop being in limbo and afraid of himself.
Or that's my take.
Here is a line that finally made me see that Calvin wanted Eric as much as Eric did just was to afraid to go for it.

"You're insane. Eric, the only thing that is going to happen in all of this is that I'm going to freak the fuck out and we will never be able to be closer then we are right now. I can't have that, Eric. I can't have you being hurt every time something triggers me and I will be damned if I am going to have a sexless relationship with you."

Does that not just break your heart!
It isn't easy for either of them helping Cal work through his past is not only torture for him but watching someone you love go through that has to kill.
Even when Cal is pushing Eric away Eric refuses to go.

"Please leave," I breathe. "No." He shakes his head
and
His hand strokes along my back. "I've got nowhere else I'd rather be."

Eric tries to be what Cal needed.
HOLY HOT THAT SHOWER SCENE FANS SELF THAT WAS ... OMG I HAVE NO WORDS!

Here is my favorite quote of the whole book.

"He's claimed me. He craves me. He is redeeming me, taming me, and devouring me. He's redefined me. Now it's time to love him the way he deserves to be loved. Wholly and unconditionally."

This brought tears to my eyes and it wasn't the first time. This book is emotional how can it now be. Its about abuse and overcoming and acceptance in ones self and others. Powerful and true.
Also that epilogue!
Again I have quotes

"maybe,someday."

This is probably the most powerful 2 words Calvin could ever say in this whole book. You can never forget but maybe forgive in time.
Also this.... tee hee

"Today I get everything I've ever wanted in my life. The man I love, the family I adore and my best friend by my side until the end of time."

RIGHT!! I mean come on.. I was an emotional mess after this in a good way :)

I really don’t know where to start with this review, and I will try my best to keep it as brief as possible, but that will be hard as there is so much to say, I will also try to get through this review without shedding more tears, yes be warned this book will require tissues.

Author Zoey Derrick is an amazing lady, having read all of the other books in the 69 Bottles series I was ecstatic to receive an ARC of Defining Us; as soon as it arrived on my kindle everything else was dropped and I was in hibernation reading mode. If you have read the other books in the series, you will know that Zoey Derrick does not shy away from taboo subjects, and this book is no different, it is not the gay relationship that is the taboo matter, it is the history of one of the characters that really opens your eyes and has you wanting to climb into the book to hug away his pain.

From the first word to the last full stop I was engrossed in Calvin and Eric’s story, and couldn’t believe the array of emotions 369 pages lead to; and on a side note, how fitting that the 69 bottles series ended on a book with 369 pages! The book deals with love, heartache, betrayal, frustration, anger, anxiety, grief and everything in between, and it is done so amazingly, that it was easy to get lost in this book and forget that these characters were not real, I felt emotionally invested in this book, and although tears were shed aplenty - causing a massive headache - I could not put the book down until it was finished.

The depth and raw emotions the characters went through could be felt through every word, and ultimately the passion between the characters was off the charts hottttt. Calvin and Eric not only had to deal with their issues, but had to do so in the public eye. Nothing was easy for them and the heartache they both had to suffer broke my heart. Yes there is a HEA, but to get there you will have to be patient and have broad shoulders to carry the weight of emotions in this book, but in the end I can assure you it will be worth the endless supply of Kleenex.

There are many lines I could pick out of the book as being profound, or turning points in the book, but the few lines that really broke me wear, “With the setting sun behind them, like a slow-motion action movie, my entire world came walking across the parking lot. I lost it in Eric’s arms as Talon, Kyle, Dex, Raine, Addison, Casey, Mills, Beck, Tori and Rusty approached us” these few lines as simple and unassuming as they seem stuck with me from the moment I read them until writing this review weeks later, the hairs on my arms and back of my neck stood up and the tears freely flowed.

You really need to read this book; it feels like a rite of passage. Another amazing book by the truly talented Zoey Derrick, cannot wait for more from this author.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian I Dig Good Books. I was gifted my copy of this book.

Okay this is book 6 in the 69 Bottles series. There is no need to read the other books before this one, but it might help give you a bit of insight into how the others, Talon, Kyle, Addison, Raine, and Dex, see Eric and Calvin. Its also a single, finished story.

I can't write a blurby bit, not for this book, I'm just jumping straight in.

I wanted to read Eric and Calvin's story, right from the first 69 Bottles book. I knew their story was gonna be amazing, and I was not disappointed.

It is told in the first person, and present tense AND multi POV, however, as in all these books, it hasn't bothered me. In fact, I would have been disappointed if it was written any other way.

But what absolutely made this for me, what made it such a heart wrenching, tearful, cheerful read, was the research that Ms Derrick must have undertaken. Because it shows! I mean I have a teeny tiny clue that these things happened at some point in time, that they, probably, are somewhere still going on. But I have no clue, none at all how it might affect someone, how, even after ten years, it can affect someone. How one would go about not fixing, because you can't fix someone who isn't broken, about how you go about correcting all the damage done, how you go about having a normal relationship after all that went on. How you deal, as a partner to someone who has been through what Cal went through, how you deal with that. It broke my heart for Cal, but equally for Eric.

What I also liked, perversely, was that the tour and the bank take second stage in this book. I mean in the other books, the tour is paramount, its front and centre. While here, they are on tour, yes, but its not so much front and centre. More off to the back right :-p

Ms Derrick made me cry, yes she did, great hacking sobs for Cal and for Eric. She made me cheer, loudly, when they finally, FINALLY were able to be together.

Thank you, so much, Ms Derrick, for giving me this book, ALL the 69 Bottles books, I loved them so much!

five stars

5 Stars!

Best book of this whole freaking series! Wow. What an emotional ride that had me in tears from start to finish. This book was absolutely amazing and spoke deep into my soul. This series was already amazing but this story right here... needed to be told. This book was brilliantly written.

Sexy, sweet, intense, passionate, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, and completely emotional, Calvin and Eric will take you on a journey to their happy ending. Their story was not easy and really hard to read at times. Their love showed no bounds though and their triumph is one that was beautiful.

If you haven't caught up on this series ,you should before reading this book. This author is brilliant in rolling a beautifully complicated love story with enough steam to light your kindle on fire. This book will completely change you in many ways. Get ready to go back on tour with 69 Bottles!

This is Calvin and Eric's story. Calvin and Eric have been in love with each other for a long time. They may hide their feelings and closet their emotions but they are there, lurking in the shadows threatening to come out. But neither expect the storm brewing when they give into them.

Calvin has lived a hard life with unimaginable things happening. He wears his scars and suffers daily. They prevent him from really living. But with Eric, he wants to try. But it is going to take time, patience, love, nurturing and a lot of healing in order for these two to find happiness.

Eric knows what he wants out of life. He wants Calvin, scars and all. Despite Calvin's insistence he is too damaged, Eric knows he is worth everything. But when Calvin opens up to him and reveals his past, it is going to be a long road full of tears, heartbreak but eventually love.

These two worked so well together. God, Calvin broke my heart over and over. Many times I had to stop reading their story and just take a few breaths because it was that intense. Their love and passion poured off of the pages and despite it all, I was rooting hard for these two men.

I highly recommend this book!

Watch out for the quiet ones

When I open up a new Zoey Derrick book, I expect a five star read. There are a handful of authors that I actually recommend to other people, and she is one of them. You might think that this means a free pass for a glowing review, but it's so not the case. I have really high expectations, and I'm probably harder on this short list of authors than I am on anyone else.

I've made no secret that her 69 Bottles series is my gold standard for rock star novels. Like in real life, most bands have one or two polarizing members, and this fictional group is no exception. Eric and Calvin were those guys that always lurked in the background, quiet and sort of unassuming. Who would have thought that their story was so compelling?

From the outset, this book was very different in tone from the rest of the series. The other books started off with a bang, and this one was extremely subdued. Not much humor or celebrity fodder here, this is a book with teeth. A story that is as much social commentary as it is a romance, this read tackles some hot button issues without becoming preachy. Totally in my wheelhouse.

And of course, there are some can't miss bedroom scenes, because it is a Zoey Derrick book. Deep, introspective Zoey still finds a way to bring her brand of steam into the storyline in a way that feels organic and not cheap. Quite frankly, I'm easily bored by sex scenes in most mainstream romance, but this lady can write sex that makes me hang on every word.

Most of the time, the audiences that read traditional M/F romance shy away from M/M and those demographics just don't overlap much. As this was my first true M/M read, I'd suggest this to others as a great gateway into the subgenre. It's a great, character driven look into how loving someone else can only truly take place once you understand and accept yourself.

I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

The 69 Bottles series is one I've bragged on all year practically. I absolutely love these characters. I've been waiting for Zoey to write Peacock and Mouse's story, and here it is. In the last book - Devouring Raine - Eric aka Peacock comes out to his band members that he's into men not women. This hits Calvin aka Mouse right where it should. Let's see if he does anything about it.

So the story opens up with a little bit of history to catch up on events that have been happening from these two's perspective. We've not heard much from them in previous books - I think because they really do just keep to themselves. In this story, however, Eric is determined to show Calvin how he feels about him. They're best friends but the feelings Eric has for Calvin go beyond friendship.

Of course there's more to the story that just an average run of the mill romance. Calvin has some major issues. I do mean major. His character is so messed up. The things in his head would take more than a lifetime to sort through. It's a wonder he can keep himself afloat from all the crazy in there. This of course makes Eric more determined.

It wouldn't be a Zoey Derrick novel without a bump or two in the road. Oh how the bump falls too. These two are more than just best friends. They're lovers. They're confidants. They're advisors. They're each other's safety net.

Definitely another book for you to check out and add to your never ending TBR pile!

Mouse/Calvin must have said a million times to Peacock/Eric there was no "magical" cure and then poof...yes there is. UGH. Peacock/Eric must have said a million times to Mouse/Calvin that he would stand with him no matter what and that he didn't expect a "magic" cure, then poof, not so much..until the "magic" cure.

The writing and editing was good. The long term (10 years) best friendship seemed to be very superficial especially considering they both think they are in love with the other. I'm not sure how you hang out together for 10 years and not know someone can cook or party with them for that long and never sleep over. Calvin even muses that he doesn't know why Eric got into music...10 years together in a band and that never came up?

The worst part though was the sex scenes. Ugh. They were hard to appreciate because as a reader, knowing all of Calvin's issues, I felt like I was watching a bus head straight for a wall every time they did anything. It was not erotic or romantic at all to me.

Finally, although this is part of a series, it was stressed this was stand alone enough to figure out what is going on, but I really don't know that that is totally true. It took me a while to figure out who was who, and what relationship they had to each other in the band, in the bodyguard crew, I think there were bus drivers and I'm still not sure who Camie? who shows up at the end was. I felt like I was missing a lot of information. If I was made to care more about Eric and Calvin, that might have bothered me more.

Entertaining read but for me the story could have been told in half the number of pages. This is Calvin (Mouse) & Eric's (Peacock) story and it is told from both their POV. Although is was marked at the beginning of each chapter who's POV it was, I was constantly confused who we were following. I struggled with this through the whole book.
The blurb said: Defining Us: The Story of Calvin & Eric is a Standalone, Full Length Novel. Can be read without reading the other books in this series. I don't agree with that. IMO you'd really miss a lot if you haven't read the previous books, because all the others re-appear in this book. It's actually one of the things I liked about this book: knowing who the side characters were and knowing their story. The story of Defining Us was... weird. Calvin was damaged and broken and Eric was the person who helped him through. This story deals with Conversion therapy (Calvin's father didn't like him being gay and he puts him in an institution to be 'cured'). I've never heard about this therapy and it's very (too) extreme and..... it didn't cure Calvin's homosexuality. Anyway, together they get through it (Eric helps Calvin and they are very sweet together... and hawt!) and everything ends well! :-) I'd say... 3,5 stars; rounded up to 4 because it was a great series!!

Defining US: The Calvin and Eric Story is the 6th and final chapter in the amazing 69 Bottles series. This book can be read as a standalone but it would be better enjoyed in series order. This is an M/M erotic story.

Eric Richardson bassist for 69 Bottles (America's hottest rock band) has everything he wants in life: fame, money, but the one thing he really wants seems out of reach... Calvin Caldwell lead guitarist is torn as his mind tell him one thing and his body is reacting in another way. Music has always been his medicine to sooth his soul. Calvin's demons from his past refuse to let him go. Is Eric worth the battle?

Defining US is a beautiful heartbreaking love story between band members & longtime best friends. I've read this entire series and to be honest I didn't think Zoey could top Taming Dex & Devouring Raine (Books 4 & 5) which had everything a reader could ever want but Calvin & Eric's story is pure perfection in every way; heart breaking backstory, emotional love story & erotic hot as hell sex!

Zoey Derrick's Defining US: The Calvain & Eric Story earns 5 Stars! I'm sad to see this series end but Zoey has done these characters justice in the finale.

This book should have warning tags. That pissed me off more than anything. The only warning I could find was m/m. Rape. Forced conversion therapy. PTSD. Those immediately come to mind as needed warnings.

This had elements of romance but it was not a romance so much as the wrap up of a series (that I didnt read so I spent a lot of time lost). The sex was more plentiful than I would have expected and although it did not suffer from "magic penis cure", it did sort of try to convince me that sex would cure the issues.

I might have liked the characters more had I read the whole series so it was difficult to relate to them fully. This was not a standalone in my eyes.

There were elements that I really liked (the family aspect of the band, the relationship of the step mother, the determination of the main characters to stay together) and yet some things just made no sense (the conflict at the 2/3rds point...the whole book was an angst fest, was the conflict necessary? No.).

I would not recommend this to my fellow m/m romance readers nor gay fiction fans but it's probably good for fans of this series and people interested in m/m lite if you don't mind heavy angst and you heed the tags I mentioned.

A true love story!!

This is the first book by Zoey Derrick that I have read and while this book is part of the 69 Bottles series you do not need to have read any of the other books to read this one. I started with this book only because I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Calvin and Eric love each other… it’s that simple… or is it? This book shows us that love is not simple even when both people feel the same way about each other. Eric has no problem admitting his feelings for Calvin, but that’s due to the acceptance he has found since coming out to his friends and family. Calvin, on the other hand, has not been so lucky. Not only has he not found acceptance but his family did some unimaginable things to try to “fix” his gayness. Calvin knows where his heart belongs but can he convince his mind to get on board? This is a story of absolute, unconditional love between two amazing men. Zoey gives us not only intense, raw emotion in this book but also a passionate, steamy read! Whether you love M/M books or just enjoy a fantastic love story, you will love this book!

5 Crazy Ass Must Read Stars!!!!!

How do I even put into words what this book has done me? I would suggest to have a box of tissues on hand while reading because it is an emotion wrought journey. I've followed this series from the beginning and was always do curious as to what Eric and Calvin's story was. They intrigued me. I just never though it would be them taking this journey together. I'm so glad it was because it makes perfect sense. It's Peacock and Mouse!
Gosh, I can't stop the tears. I thought I cried a lot while reading Redeeming Kyle but my heart just broke for Calvin. I will be honest and say I'm not into m/m genre but I just had to read this after following the series. I'm so glad I did. It was so much more than I could have expected. It is my favorite book of the series by far.
I absolutely, whole-heartedly recommend this book. It can be read as a standalone but I suggest reading the series so you can get a better understanding of the dynamic between the band.

Title: Defining Us
Author: Zoey Derrick
Release Date: December 1, 2015
Cliffhanger: No

Love isn’t always easy or pretty. Especially if the thought of kissing the man you are in love with makes you want to puke.

I felt like I was a fly on the wall watching Eric and Calvin’s budding romance come to life. This pseudo GFY (gay for you) rock star romance was full of emotion and was heartbreaking at times. Defining Us can be read as a standalone. I really wish I read the other books in this series first (the other characters backstories sound nuclear hot)! I plan on reading bringing the 69 Bottles books with me on vacation after I defog my Kindle screen from this hot m/m love story.

Omg. Where do I begin? I have a true book hangover from this one. I hate to admit this is my first book by Zoey. I am not disappointed. This story tote at my heart like only Colton Donovan has ever done!!. Do I really need to say more?? Probably not, but I will anyway.

Calvin will break your heart and Eric will put it back together. Such love and devotion to deal with the baggage of Calvin's past. Calvin was destroyed by his own father and the biggots who taught him that being gay and was an abomination. I will not go into detail as to what happened because that will destroy the story.

Eric decided that against all odds, he will be at Calvin's side, but can he really live with the horrors and baggage that come with him? You must read this phenomenal story of overcoming obstacles, love, and true devotion. I truly felt all of the emotions that Zoey portrayed. Thank you so much Zoey and I can't wait to finish the series.

Eric has loved Calvin for years and kept it inside until he finally came out and was ready to tell him how he truly felt. What he didn't expect was what a battle it would be to continue love him completely.

I am at a loss of how to describe how great and well written this book was. It brought up so many emotions when I read it. I was angry and saddened because of the reasons behind Calvin's reluctance for a relationship with Eric. Sad to say that what happened still does in some places.

Zoey, you were able to capture that raw emotion between the two of them when things finally came to a head and it had me in tears.

Sadness aside, I loved the story as a whole and the ending was great. What a wonderful ending to an amazing series. If I could give it a million stars, I would.

What an amazing book!

I was given an advance copy of this book for my honest review.

The story is intense, real and raw. Little by little trust is built and barriers fall. There isn’t a moment where you can’t feel the intensity of want and need from these characters while you are on this journey with them of absolute acceptance, hope, healing and unconditional love.

Wow!!!!!

This story is not what I thought it would be. It's way better. I am amazed. This is very believable and so real. It makes me hurt inside that parents or someone that's supposed to love you could do something that horrible. Hopefully people will learn, you can't change who you are.

Couldn't wait to read Calvin & Eric's story & I soooooo wasn't disappointed. What a beautiful & heartbreaking story. I never expected Calvin's back story - it's horrifying that such practises exist/existed. Love both these guys❤

Now I am a big fan of Zoey Derrick and the 69 Bottles series. Ive loved it since I read the first one. This story will just break your heart when you read it while at the same time inspire you to go after what you want in life and love.

Calvin aka Mouse and Eric aka Peacock are two very opposite characters that have been best friends for years. That is until Eric comes out of the closet and Calvins feelings for him start to come out and start unraveling into something you can never even fathom about him.

Eric has spent a decade in love with Calvin always thinking he wasnt into guys like he is, boy oh boy is he wrong.

Calvin's story amazes me and makes me cry at the same time.

Eric is one of those ppl that just wants to take all the pain of what hes gone through away and fix it and he struggles so much with what he puts Calvin through. I just love eric so much a sweetie.

This is a must read if you are a fan of Zoey Derricks books or if you love any of the 69 bottles books. Its different because it is guy on guy and thats not what alot of ppl want to read. But its sexy as hell as so worth the read for sure.
