For three years, Detective Jude Fontaine was kept from the outside world. Held in an underground cell, her only contact was with her sadistic captor, and reading his face was her entire existence. Learning his every line, every movement, and every flicker of thought is what kept her alive.
After her experience with isolation and torture, she is left with a fierce desire for justice—and a heightened ability to interpret the body language of both the living and the dead. Despite colleagues’ doubts about her mental state, she resumes her role at Homicide. Her new partner, Detective Uriah Ashby, doesn’t trust her sanity, and he has a story of his own he’d rather keep hidden. But a killer is on the loose, murdering young women, so the detectives have no choice: they must work together to catch the madman before he strikes again. And no one knows madmen like Jude Fontaine.

I was totally smitten by this thrilling novel that had such a unique angle on your average crime/thriller. I have never written anything by Anne Frasier before but that clearly is where my life has been lacking, she is a very skilled author that managed to engage me fully as a reader. This is a book that I highly recommend for anybody's to-read list!
Detective Jude Fontaine is the star of this novel. A Detective who has been abducted, held prisoner, subjected to horrific mental and physical torture in a lonely and empty place for 3 years. She is damaged goods on every level. However, she is one strong woman. I loved her character, loved Jude through the entire book as the story moves with her and keeps you hanging on for more.
Isolation, terror and fear have given Jude the unique ability to "read" people exceptionally well when she finally finds her freedom again and returns to her role in the Homicide team that had all but given up hope of finding her alive. She claims to be able to smell, sense and just know things about the dead and the living. Her new partner Detective Uriah Ashby is not so sure of her mental state and the book cleverly allows us also to walk a fine line between what we know and believe.
The book switches between back then (captive Jude) and now (Jude seeking justice for the dead) and it makes for really intriguing reading. I was totally engrossed from page one and how could you not be as the opening pages are brilliant! Gosh how I love a well-written damaged character and Jude is certainly that, I felt like I knew her personally by the time I had caught my breath after an absolutely nail-biting, harrowing and surprising ending with awesome reveals!
Murder is in the air, can Jude stay steady after all she has been through to do her job well? You will need to read this great book to find out for yourself, you won't be bored for one second. It's gritty and fast paced with so much going for it, thrills and twists that had me loving every single word. It's quality writing on so many levels and I can't do anything but give it 5 glowing stars as I really loved this book. It's a book with some depth and that is something I personally enjoy a lot. Bravo!

And with January and 2018, I've decided that it's time for me to refresh my reading experiences in genres not my own!
So, I hied me to my local library, a Timberland Library in Yelm, and checked out a handful of books. I opened this one last night, and finished it very early this morning. It's a headlong read, with a very unusual POV character.
YOu know how much I hate spoilers, so I won't give away more than the book does on the back jacket or indeed within the first pages.
Jude Fontaine, a police detective, was abducted three years ago. Her sadistic jailer has kept her alive in horrific conditions. Jude has survived my shutting down her emotions. When she does attain her freedom, this tale gives a very realistic depiction of all she goes through in attempting to find and resume her life and decide who she is now.
I think what most fascinated me about this book was the character Jude. I felt a mixture of horror and sympathy for her. I could not stop reading until the tale was done.
Warning: The title is misleading, there is no body reading in this book..
Jude is a homicide detective who got kidnapped and kept in small basement cell for three years with only her persecuter for contact, something that did enhance her senses and her ability to read people, dead or alive (you won't see much of that). One day, during a city blackout, she manages to escape.. Her life isn't the same anymore.. She makes it back to the homicide department and starts working on a case that will lead to some kind of serial killing that would bring some bad shit out..
Things I liked: - The plot - The twists - Uriah - The cat - The end
Things I didn't like: - This book is about 300 pages that could have been reduced to 200 or less. - Too much useless details that had absolutely nothing to do with the cases. - It was more of a Jude's pseudo-diary than a thriller. - It gets dull from time to time (too often) - It wasn't exactely what I had in mind when I picked up the book.
It was not as bad as the "things I didn't like" makes it seem, but if you're looking for a really thrilling thriller, do not pick that book :)
I am afraid I may be in the minority here but The Body Reader by Anne Frasier did absolutely nothing for me it started okay & got my interest, but I found the plot a bit hard to believe she is held captive raped tortured doesn't know who she is, turns up at the Boston P.D where she used to work dishevelled broken bones etc then further on she has her full memory back then starts her job as nothing has happened.
Meh it was just a read nothing to get excited about sorry guys. It just didn't live up to my expectations.
Umm, an engaging read. Q: “There are three things I’ve seen once in my life,” Uriah said, squinting against the sunlight. “Thick fog that stopped at my knees and swirled in circles when I kicked it, a rainbow that ended in a street right in front of me, and a rabbit dance. You ever heard of a rabbit dance?” “No.” “It happens in the middle of the night. Hundreds of rabbits rendezvous in a clearing, and they kind of dance in the moonlight. I can’t describe it, but it’s bizarre in a good way. With all of those events, I didn’t realize I was seeing something amazing for the first and last time. And I’m saying that those things, those random, crazy surprises that have nothing to do with life decisions or your past or your future, might be worth sticking around for.” (c)
I really liked this. It's dark. It's interesting. There are so many layers to the story and the mystery. It's never what you think it is. Compelling and gripping with a really fucked up main character.
At times, the plot felt a bit disjointed. It jumped around a bit too much, with the only thing tying it together being Jude's issues. Are we investigating Jude's abduction or the dead girl? Or the head in the helmet? Like what's the deal with her father and brother? The link between all of these could have been a little bit more visible; bread crumbs should have been a bit more obvious, so as not to lose the reader along the way.
In the end, all threads were tied together, and I got the fucking closure and satisfaction I was craving.
9/10 would solve crimes with Jude again.

This is a story that grabs your attention from the get-go. Jude Fontaine used to be an easy going homicide detective. That was before she was abducted & endured 3 years of abuse at the hands of a madman. So when she finally escapes & gets her old job back, it should be all good, right? Well…..
This fast paced police procedural is not for the squeamish. We follow Jude & her partner Uriah Ashby as they investigate the fallout from depravity run amok. It’s a tough job on a good day & neither has had one of those in a long time. As a result of her ordeal, Jude has become detached & lacking in social skills. Uriah is her emotional opposite. He’s still reeling from the loss of his wife & struggles to keep a lid on everything he feels. As the story progresses, both will uncover family secrets that force them to question just how well they knew those closest to them.
Though events that occur are horrific in nature the author doesn’t dwell on gruesome details & allows the reader’s imagination to fill in the blanks. Some of the bad guys will trigger your spidey senses immediately while others may take you by surprise when all is revealed. It makes for a satisfying police procedural but it’s the relationship between the MC’s that guarantees you become invested in the the story. If this is the start of a new series I’d definitely like to catch up with these 2 in the next book.
The Body Reader by Anne Frasier is quite a tense book! From the very beginning it had me on edge and it didn't let up until the end! Wow, talk about suspense! I will definitely have to follow if this becomes a series....loved it. Narration was perfect too!
I really enjoyed this one. I spent the day reading it and didn't want to put it down.
This story starts out strong with Jude making an escape after 3 years of being held captive to a sadistic criminal. I was immediately pulled into the story and the strong female character of Jude. After 3 years of captivity she is not your typical heroine, but she shows strength and grit as she returns to a semblance of normal life.
In her before captivity life she was a detective in the homicide department of a police department. After a few months of rehab and a mental health check she is brought back in the department. Her partner, Uriah, isn't too thrilled with the match and is unsure if she should be back as a detective, specifically in homicide. However, their partnership is one of the best aspects of this book. This is not a romance novel. This is two people, each with a past trauma affecting them, trying to form a professional relationship with the other person. Uriah is one of the best parts of the book. I really liked his character and although his back story was sad, it was a strong story that created who he is today.
The name of the book "The Body Reader" implies more body reading ability than what really happens in the book. I wasn't excited by this aspect of the book, glad it was limited and that the book really focused on the characters and the murder mystery plot. Character development was really good as was the mystery plot.
This was my first book by Anne Frasier and I really liked it. I also really liked the characters of Jude and Uriah and would love to read more books with them in it.
Thanks to Thomas & Mercer via NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for a honest review.
A woman was kidnapped and held captive for 3 years. Over that time her survival depended on learning to read her captor. To understand his intentions through subtle cues gleaned from his expressions. After escaping she returns to her job as a detective and uses her freaky ability to track down killers.
I love the premise of this book. The idea is intriguing and I think the author could have spent the entire book exploring that. But I get the impression that the idea was where it began and ended for her. She didn't do any research that I could detect on that particular aspect of the story. And honestly her main character didn't even seem to have any "freaky" ability in reading people and was on more than one occasion TSTL.
It was basically Karen Rose but not as well written and not saved by the great idea.
This is plain thriller/crime mystery! There’s no romance here!
But I liked it so very, very much!
The story is very interesting and I felt for both Jude and Uriah! Maybe a little bit more for Jude! ;)
She was obviously traumatized, but she was extremely aware of her status. That’s the best things here. Even if nobody believe that she’s able to work she still manage to convince them!
She’s totally cold, and deeply aware of that. She knows that she ought to overcome her trauma (and what a trauma that is!!!), but she’s doing it in her own way. Great!
Add to all that the problem with her family and you get the picture of her life! WOW!
When you discover the why it’s heartbreaking! And truly horrible!!!
What was also interesting is the ability to read people that she acquired during the imprisonment. She’s become extremely aware of everything around her too. Wonderfully described and very intriguing!
A great book! Very recommended if you like thrillers!
Ahhh the premise is sooooo good. But alas, I was left wanting more. I feel like this was a starter kit for what could've been a fantastic novel. There were too many things not hashed out well enough. Too many things that had they been elaborated on, would've made much more sense.
This is a KU book that I enjoyed so much I purchased it. And I really recommend this book to those who love mysteries and thrillers. You do need a bit of a strong stomach though.
This was one of the most bone-chilling books I have ever read. I adored it and I wish that there was a hint if this was going to be part of a series or merely a stand-alone.
This is the perfect read for when you need something un-fluffy, unromantic (no romance here!) and horrifying (but not in a bad way lol). (Yes this is a series and there are two more books as of today 5/9/20 and they are Kindle Unlimited)
And I have to admit that I didn't see the ultimate bad guy coming -although I realize I should have.
With an opening like this one, how can you go wrong?--->" One day she stopped screaming. It was the same day she quit thinking about the world beyond the windowless cell. That world no longer existed.
Frasier, Anne. The Body Reader (p. 1). Kindle Edition. "
2.5/5 stars Unfortunately I was disappointed by this book. 😭 I had such high hopes!
My issue with the writing in this book was that it wasn’t detailed enough for me. While reading, I felt like there was a distance between the reader and the MC. I was hoping this book would dive deep into the mind of a woman going through trauma, but using the skill of body reading to help solve cases. That’s pretty much what the book guaranteed... but instead, Jude (the MC) didn’t “read” bodies very often and even when she did it was unimpressive. I felt the storyline would’ve been a lot stronger if the reader was taken on a journey inside Jude’s mind and clearly explained how the bodies told a story. I wanted intricate details like on the show Lie to Me or like Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock. I wanted BAU profiling level detail on the body language. I didn’t get any of that.
On top of the entire synopsis and the title turning out to be a let down, I found that the ending wasn’t satisfying.
Eh, I’m kinda over this story. I may or may not continue this series.
Anne Frasier has become one of my favorite authors after reading this book. Love this character and I cannot wait to read more stories about her. Det Jude Fontaine has been kept captive for 3 years with no contact except the brutal man who has abused and tortured her. Luck and chance allows her to escape but the life that was all that kept her going through her ordeal is no more. Her boyfriend has moved on, her job is no longer and to top it all off she has become the focus of the media after reappearance and her miraculous survival. She gets her job back and now spends her nights trying to find the house where she was kept captive. When she is asked to investigate the disappearance of another girl she uncovers more details that may link several other disappearances. Is her disappearance tied into the same person? As she tries to get her life back she finds that she is no longer influenced by who she was and that she can sense other people's emotions because of her lack of emotion which she had suppressed in order to survive her torture. Great read I could not put it down. I would like to thank the Publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
For me, this book was not outstanding, but still a great read. I have trouble to understand why so many people loved this book so much, don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed reading this, it was suspenseful, a bit spooky and really entertaining, but maybe I'm not so much into thrillers and crime books in general to really see the difference compared to other books of that genre.
I saw many reviews, where the readers complained about the misleading title "The Body Reader", because body reading is not really a part of this book. So I looked up the german title of the translation and it said "Ich bin nicht tot", meaning in english "I am not dead". Maybe they should have taken this title instead. Not because I have a problem with it, I didn't find the title misleading or not suitable, but maybe there wouldn't be so many people complaining about it then. I still liked it and if I find the time, I'd like to read something else by Frasier.
The Body Reader follows our main character, Jude, as she escapes from a cell where she's been held captive for the last 3+ years. Prior to being abducted, she was a detective on her local police force, and after a few months of rehab, she returns to work. Her new partner Uriah isn't thrilled. He doesn't trust that she's ready to be back working on murder cases after such a short time being back in "the real world". Despite his protests, they are partnered, and begin working a case regarding a string of murdered girls.
Having been held captive for so long, Jude has perfected the art of "reading" facial expressions and body movements, and uses this to her advantage while working these cases. As she continues to investigate, the danger around her grows.
I did enjoy this book, but not as much as I was hoping I would. I was hoping for more "body reading" going into it, given the title and description, and I found that aspect of it lacking. I do think it set the base foundation and understanding for the reader, so that if the author chose to write sequels with the same characters, it would be set up nicely. I'd love reading more about what Jude can learn and understand from people (and even victims) using that particular skill of hers.
Otherwise, I felt like Jude and Uriah both were well developed characters, which I loved. I liked that the book jumped between Jude narrating the present and the past while she was held captive. I loved the twists the book took, and I thought the ending was great! I will say that I didn't feel a whole lot of tension as I was reading the book - that "oh my gosh, what's going to happen" feeling was lacking for me, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. If you're looking for that heart pounding suspense, you won't find it here. If you're looking for a more gradual build with great character development and a surprising ending, this is the book for you!
I'd definitely read more by this author, and would love a sequel with the same characters.
