Rudy Phillips is the sort of guy who walks into a room and catches every female eye. He has a mesmerizing charm that women can’t resist. Bridget Tennyson, a stunningly gorgeous American is the latest chick he’s got his sights set on. However, she’s not the kind of woman Rudy is used to chasing. She’s a professional stockbroker and owns a highly successful stock-trading firm on an exclusive Caribbean island catering to the superrich. She’s also married to the famous British nobleman, Lord Edward Tennyson.
Bridget is crazy about Rudy even though she’s aware that they come from completely different worlds. Rudy feels the same way about her. What’s more, never before has he found the forbidden so alluring.
The big question is, can Rudy who is used to having women eating out of his hand, handle a woman like Bridget who is independent-minded, calculating and ambitious? They both know that if they slip up and Bridget’s husband discovers what’s going down, all hell will break loose but it’s a chance they’re willing to take.
Rudy Phillips, newsman, and Bridget Tennyson, stockbroker, start a blazing love affair. Just because she’s married to someone else shouldn’t stand in their way, right?
Rudy is a good looking guy, the kind that women always turn around to look. He’s self-assured and he’s charming. Bridget is a very smart woman. She’s beautiful and super rich. Rudy likes the idea that she is forbidden property, but that’s probably why he’s so attracted to her to begin with.
Living on Elysian Island, an exclusive Caribbean retreat, Bridget tries to get Rudy to the island, even though her husband is also there. Unbeknownst to her, Rudy talks to her husband and finagles the exclusive rights to writing his memoirs.
It seems like absence does make the heart grow fonder. Too much togetherness is not working out exactly like Rudy had though. Bridget is not the woman he thought she was. Coming from two totally different worlds sets up all kinds of trouble.
And what will happen if her husband finds out?
Even though I didn’t really connect with either one of these characters, the book had a good plot and it was a well-written book. The ending was a bit anticlimactic in my opinion. There was some mystery, but was not highly suspenseful.
Many thanks to the author / Booklover Catlady Publicity who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
This is a very well described book. You can picture every scene, hear the sea and almost watch the characters. Set on an Island in the Caribbean, near Saint Lucia this would perhaps make a good read on a tropical beach holiday. The scenes are described in depth, for me to the detriment of the plot as it makes for a slow reveal of the story line. A man finds a new love , is set up for a murder, whilst being asked to ghost wrote the biography of the man who founded the island company and much of what stands on the island both people , hotels and the rest. His lover is wealthy and her husband is the one owning the island. The lifestyle Rudy can’t believe he has landed in is peeled away and the truth under the veneer of the islands idyllic setting are revealed. What was too good to be true as very often we find out, really is. Drugs, crime, fraud and more are rife in this much envied getaway for celebrities and European royalty. Romance and some suspense are here, but amongst the very detailed people and scenes, for me not enough to keep me gripped. I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review
*I was provided with this book, Between Two Fires, free of charge so I could read it and create this review. All opinions are my own.*
If the back of the book is to be believed, Between Two Fires is a story of a woman with a husband and a lover. I was surprised to find that the story barely focused on the woman and instead followed the man she was having an affair with. I’m not sure what the “Two Fires” are supposed to be if not this woman’s two relationships.
Anyway, disregarding the blurb on the back of the book, this story was quite interesting. The main character, Rudy, comes to this island for the “rich and famous” to ghost write the tell-all of a rich and interesting man, Edward Tennyson. But it turns out this man has actually lost his fortune, and he is the husband of Rudy’s lover Bridget. The story starts out seeming like it will focus on their relationships but it quickly leaves Bridget behind.
Rudy becomes embroiled in a murder investigation as a prime suspect. Of course he decides to investigate on his own as he feels like local police aren’t working hard enough. Bridget tries very hard to dissuade Rudy from taking matters into his own hands but he doesn’t listen.
The murder mystery idea in Between Two Fires was quite intricate. A lot of characters were involved, with a fair bit of misdirection, and some very unsavory bad guys. A few areas had awkward wording – partly because some folks in the book spoke with a Caribbean inflection which can be hard to follow. Some of it was just editing issues. Maybe another look through with an editor could have been done. It didn’t make the book hard to read, just nit-picky stuff I noticed.
Many characters are involved in this story. I actually lost track of them a few times overall. I feel like the plot was supposed to go one way and got sidetracked – never to return to the original story. The flow of the writing was fine, easy to read, and the chapters weren’t too long, but the coherence was not great. I would have liked the book to follow through with the suggestions on the back of the love triangle between Edward, Bridget and Rudy. The ending to that piece of plot was very unsatisfactory.
Overall Between Two Fires was an easy fiction story. A little more editing would have made it better. If I hadn’t been so busy these last two weeks I would have read it in about 4 or 5 days. And remember, that’s mom-reading time. As in after the kids go to bed, and in short bursts at work. I can still sneak in the occasional weekend afternoon read (when we’re home!)
This is a long and thorough book! I love the island that is described, I am not sure why but it put me in the mind of a small town that knows everyone and has tons of special festivities. I didn't like Bridgett at all, I thought she was very manipulative and secretive. The twist was the murder, I didn't see it coming. It was a fantastic book, but it was incredibly long. I would suggest making this into two books. I would like to see more from these characters! Will there be another book?

Descriptive from the very beginning. Believable characters with realistic motives. Quite descriptive but wonderfully so and the back story was explained in relevant detail that made you feel like you knew the characters after only a few pages.
I couldn't shake the feeling that the men from the Elysian Island Company knew or one of them was Rudy's Father, as they seemed to treat him like one of their own very quickly.
I was desperate to see how Rudy and Bridget's relationship developed in such close proximity to her husband and whether Rudy working with him would make him rethink the relationship. After a while it became clear to me that Bridget was very manipulative and calculating. I wondered if she had feelings for Rudy or whether he would simply help her meet her ends. Rudy on the other hand seemed like a bit of a sap where Bridget was concerned.
When Rudy discovers a murder scene and is taken in for questioning, the plot takes a completely different path to what I was expecting! Rudy begins to play detective and to find out who framed him. I still couldn't shake the feeling something was very off about Bridget.
Overall I enjoyed this, but got a little bored towards the end.
Women... you can’t live with them and you can’t kill them… or can? I’ve just finished reading Between Two Fires and loved it! Yep, I enjoyed this book very much. I felt the characters and got heart palpations while reading it. I found myself staying up too late and even reading while in the bathroom because I couldn’t put it down, being afraid to leave incredibly gorgeous and financially independent stockbroker from California, Bridget Tennyson and British newsman, Rudy Phillips who find himself confronted with a difficult choice: to become victims of violence and possibly even lose his life or to sacrifice his integrity and… so on and so forth. Author Toni Williams has a great imagination and wonderful way of putting the situation in a word picture so the reader not only reads about the characters but sees and smells the surroundings. The writing is extremely well done and very descriptive with easy. The book is jam-packed with a perfectly good plot, fascinating characters, genuine dialogue and realistic scenarios, which cannot leave anyone indifferent. Intelligent, mysterious, romantic and adventure book that can be surely called a real international mystery and crime!
First of all I would like to thank Goodreads, the author and publisher for awarding me this book. Thanks I looked at my to be read list on Saturday and decided I should get started reading this novel ( I do not like to wait to long after I received the novels in the mail). I sat on my veranda and read the whole thing in one sitting all 466 pages. It has been years since I have done that. What a great summer read . The book flowed and obviously kept me interested. What an enjoyable story. Again thanks so much
A good murder mystery for anyone who like this genre to try. I enjoyed the book. I will some day myself get to visit St. Lucia. The book takes place on a island that is made up off St. Lucia. I think the book had some good characters and the story line was interesting for me. I love a good murder mystery. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
