Issue #12: Almost a bit too “Mad Magazine” for me. And a whole ⭐️ 1/2 for this issue.
Vampire Vengeance: A couple of abnormal psychology students want to experience murder. This made me think of how today it seems we see this in the news daily; Murder just because. No likeable characters, of course, and not even a good vampire story. ⭐️⭐️
The Devil’s Ally: Um…? Story is lacking in every respect and the ending. WTF? I’m sure some editor cut a couple of panels. ⭐️
Satan’s Playhouse (text story): Another Satan story that may have been better had half of the second page not been taken up with the Statement of Ownership (I remember these from when I was a journalist but do we still do them?) I don’t recall the last time I saw one in a comic or periodical. But the story definitely suffered due to the lack of space. ⭐️⭐️
Evil Intruder: Definitely where I got the Mad Magazine feeling. I can’t even start on this one. 1/2 ⭐️
No Rest for the Dead: No! Not “The Book”! No, not this story! Weredolf Cemetery. Sounds like a cross between a salad and a werewolf. And that would have made a better tale. ⭐️
Issue #13: Definitely better than last issue. But that’s not saying much. ⭐️⭐️1/2
Vampire’ Blood: Starting off with another vampire story. This one sees a small Hungarian village being terrorised by a vampire but we focus on Bela (yes, they went there), a poor old junk man who finds an even older camera. He fixes it and decides to try it out on his unexplained, extremely younger, beautiful wife. You can almost guess the rest. ⭐️⭐️
Cult of the Dead: “What white man could understand the dread cult that ruled the jungle.” Yes, another problematic basis. Especially when the white, Provincial governor has the native voodoo priest whipped and imprisoned for practicing his religion. Over looking the problems caused by imposing a modern view on older stories (which I try to do), it is actually a good zombie story. And, yet again, love must die. There is a lot of suicide in these stories. ⭐️⭐️1/2
Winged Revenge (text story): Another white protagonist in a foreign land who is evil (in how he treats insects). Even though you see what happens a mile off, it is a good revenge story. If fletterbies could get revenge (yes it is spelled fletterby in the story). ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Run, Corpse, Run!: My favourite of the issue. A dying artist makes a deal with Death by pandering to Death’s vanity. Not sure I ever considered that. Typical Death cheating outcome but I love Death’s pose for his portrait. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Globe of the Ghoul: Museum curator tries on a glove supposed owned by Nero and becomes possessed by Nero’s spirit. But he knows what bullets are and actively thinks to himself how the glove is acting on it’s own. Plus he also has Nero’s “harp” (a full sized harp and not the smaller lyre Nero would have used). Too much suspension of disbelief for this one. ⭐️
After this issue, I’m switching to Boris Karloff’s Tales of Mystery for a few issues.
