The illustrations are very good, the recipes are not difficult, although I expected more dishes created in the anime by Sanji!

One Piece.

I love ‘One Piece’ (whether in manga, anime, and now live action form), so when I found out there was a ‘One Piece’ cookbook, written as if from the perspective of Sanji – the ship cook and one of my favorite* characters – well, that was definitely going on my Christmas request list! After a brief false-start when my mom accidentally ordered the Japanese version (watch out for that if you go on ebay, I guess) this edition arrived, and I have had so much fun with it!

*To be clear: Sanji’s a MESS. Just a whole basket of issues in the shape of a dramatic blonde cook! And I 100% get why some of those issues are a turnoff to some readers. But messy is interesting, Sanji has a lot of heart, and once you get both his backstories the degree and type of mess makes becomes very understandable, and the way he’s maintained his intrinsic kindness and creativity through all that extremely admirable. I would absolutely want to cook or go ingredients-shopping with him…and this cookbook is a fun way to pretend!

First off, this cookbook is small but beautiful, as I could appreciate even when I couldn’t read any of the words. The cover looks like one of the color spreads from the manga, with Sanji backed by a whole menagerie of cartoon sea creatures. There are tempting photos of all the dishes AND character images AND “manga moments” (panels showing what inspired each dish), while still managing to cover 40 dishes in 95 pages. At the back are some pages labeled “Sanji’s eye”, which have photos illustrating the favorite take-out dishes of the manga crew, “dinner at the Oda house”, and also some instructions on how to make dashi and chicken broth.

I started with the seafood – which is fitting, given that Sanji’s dream is find the All Blue, a mythical sea containing fish from all 4 of his world’s oceans. These were all a success:
- Shrimp and scallop marinade (Inspired by a feast of sky-fish in the Skypeia arc, this is pretty close to a ceviche, with the fish being marinated with grapefruit and lime, but with ginger providing the spice instead of chile. I substituted fennel for celery, because I like it better, but I think I’d reduce the raw onion or maybe use a very sweet vidalia next time because I found myself eating around the too-strong onion bits)
- Elephant true bluefin sautee (This one is funny because, in the manga, we don’t see the specific recipe Sanji makes with giant elephant true bluefin…but it looks like this recipe made the leap from here to the live action, where it is the first thing we see Sanji cook! The recipe calls for marlin, not bluefin tuna. I couldn’t find either in my local grocery, but swordfish is similar and tastes really good with the sauce made with onion, garlic, honey, soy sauce, and sesame seeds)
- Roasted sky shark…AKA steam-fried salmon (A medley of salmon with cabbage and other veggies seasoned with a sauce made with sake, miso, butter, and soy sauce! Have made this twice now, and it is going in my permanent recipe file.)
- Colorful salmon rice and sauteed veggies (From the ‘Skypiea Lunch’ trio of recipes, these two make a great pairing. I wasn’t sure what was meant by ‘salted salmon’, and I couldn’t find any fried tofu at the time. But the rice came out really tasty using hot-smoked salmon added 2/3 of the way into the cooking – the kind that flakes rather than lox – and the mushrooms. The veggie sautee is a tasty way to use fava beans when they appear in your market in spring, though you could use edamame if they are out of season).
-Edit 4/28/23: Sesame-coated mackerel pike (I really wanted to make this in part because it includes lotus root as well as sesame, both of which I really like! But I could not find Pacific saury or regular mackerel in any local store! Finally I found whole frozen Indian mackerel. I made a bit of a hash of the fillet job, but the dish still turned out pretty and tasty.)

Then of course I had to try the fried rice , which is based on the first dish we see Sanji make in the manga and anime: a meal for a starving pirate with no money that his restaurant colleagues didn’t want to serve. I don’t care for corned beef, so I used 5-spice tofu nuggets instead, and swapped in soaked dried shiitakes for the regular mushrooms to maintain the umami. The result was quite successful, though I recommend adding a vegetable side like stir-fried snow-peas. It is quite a mild fried rice – no chiles, or garlic, or ginger – but, since it was canonically meant to feed someone who hasn’t eaten in days, keeping it light-on-the-stomach makes sense! Incidentally, in the anime it looks like the dish is seafood-based, with squid or octopus tentacles, which would also be really yummy…but maybe not something you want to justify feeding to the non-paying ‘customer’! (The Baratie is still a business, after all)

I was not initially that drawn to the Inari sushi (seasoned rice in fried tofu pockets) and kitsune udon because A) they’re based on the Long Ring Long Land Arc - hands down the most irritating chunk of story - and B) fried tofu is the dominant thing in both and I wasn’t sure if I’d like that. But I did think the names were cute, because the antagonists of the arc are the Foxy Pirates, and kitsunes are shapeshifting fox spirits, while Inari is a gender-fluid harvest deity also associated with foxes. Then I found out Oda didn’t make up the names – that’s actually what these dishes are traditionally called, because supposedly foxes like fried tofu, which resembles the color of their coats. I ordered a packet of fried tofu pouches and decided to try them out! These turned out to be pre-prepared with the sweet-savory sauce, so for the sushi all I had to do was cook the rice. Flavoring sushi rice with sesame and citrus peel was a win (I used Meyer lemon instead of yuzu, and some leftover dried-shiitake-soaking-water in place of kombu for the hint of umami). The resulting sushi was tasty and easier to make than standard rice balls. The pre-prepared tofu wouldn’t have the right flavor for the udon, though, so I’ll have to find another source if I want to try that.

One of the most elaborate/gimmicky recipes is “meat on the bone” , which aims to replicate the look of Luffy’s favorite meal by turning a chicken leg inside out – so that the bone is visible – stuffing the flesh with a scotch egg so that the “meat” part is expanded, and baking until brown. I decided to make this with stir-fried bean sprouts as a side, because those are the two dishes Sanji is first asked to make when he joins the crew. Unfortunately, I could not make the meat work, even after watching this review video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdiq7... ). I think maybe my free-range chickens had excessively muscular calves or the eggs were too big, because it was very difficult to wrap the meat around the eggs and the ground meat did not successfully glue it all together. So, I ended up just making regular Scotch eggs by wrapping the ground meat mixture around the eggs, and saving the drumstick meat for another recipe. They were OK…but I don’t really feel the need to make them again. For the bean sprouts, the main flavoring element is anchovies. I don’t particularly care for anchovies, so I used 1 t of miso paste and a bit of chopped up nori seaweed, as those are suggested vegetarian substitutes and classic Japanese flavors. It was fine, but I think I would just use ginger and soy for a bean-sprouts-only stirfry in the future.

To round out this review, I had to try one of the desserts, so I chose the Manju buns that are based on the souvenir sweets Luffy picks up in Sabaody Archipelago, the halfway point of the Grand Line. (Which seems to be where this cookbook stops, as there are no references to any events that happen after that). I had a ridiculously tricky time finding candied chestnuts and red bean paste, but I was able to order some of the latter online. In a lucky accident, the cupcake foils I happened to have had Jolly Rogers on them! (Bless my family for understanding my special interests, LOL). The buns steamed up nicely, and the light, fluffy cake portion contrasts nicely with the dense, sweet bean paste. Would go nicely with some green tea.

Overall verdict Look, I don’t think I can be objective here! Purely on a recipe basis, this might have to be a 4-4.5, because a lot of the dishes do need some tweaking – particularly to work with non-Japanese grocery store offerings. But being able to combine my love of ‘One Piece’ with my love of cooking was so much fun (heck, I’m even working on my own unofficial ‘One Piece’ cookbook that is more character-inspired rather than plot-inspired!), and I had a great time discovering new ingredients and methods as a result...so it is definitely 5 stars for me!

The first two parts below don't have much to do with the actual book, just documenting my relationship with this particular piece of work. (lmao)

***
I bought the Chinese translated version of this superbly awesome collection of recipes (ONE PIECE PIRATE RECIPES 海の一流料理人 サンジの満腹ごはん), and since it is essentially a cookbook aka one of the types of "book" I consider "actual book", I'm adding it to my shelf on Goodreads.

I felt a pang of disappointment towards myself (lmao), cuz apparently this book has been translated and officially published in Chinese since 2013/08/15 (ISBN 978-986-332-775-2), and my copy is actually the 6th print! So it really is quite popular on a level! Nonetheless I'm glad that I came across the Japanese version that was left unsealed so I can view the content first; that was what prompt me to look for an edition I'd have no reading obstacles lol.
***

The book is a legit cookbook ; it includes 43 recipes, with actual photos of the dish and photos of steps of preparations, along with illustration by the mangaka Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎); it really is a satisfying treat! Only the last 3 recipes are not taken from the manga; the rest of the dish were all referenced or shown in the series, and in each recipe there's a clear label as to where (as in which chapter of what volume) you can find the specific dish. Personally, I don't think you have to be an avid fan of the manga to appreciate it; I myself only know the most basic stuff about the series (cuz let's face it; this universe is frankly quite huge) and I have no problem loving it; it is a fun way to bring the series to different readers, a smart way, too, cuz I'm pretty sure EVERYONE who has the slightest idea about the series had been waiting for a Sanji's cookbook ever since the beginning of the franchise! Well played!

“If even the mere peeling of the onion is performed without love… the dish will be ruined.”

Si buscan algo similar, recomiendo Kitchen of Witch Hat.

I loved this book! I've already tried a few recipes and my favorite one is "Former-Pirate Shakky's Simmered Beans", although... most of the time I exclude the minced meat and add mix in rice instead. Hahaha. I recommend this book not only to all One Piece fans out there, but to any culinary fanatics that want to try something new and exciting.

Oh, and also - I love the fact that every recipe includes the chapter number, where it appears or/and is mentioned, plus a little scene from the manga. Front to back - fantastic design, graphics, text, details... nothing to dislike, basically.

10/10 read, 10/10 recipes

P.S.: I just noticed that the version I'm commenting under is the paperback one, instead of the hardcover one that I have. Just wanted to point that out. The hard covers are amazing!

I liked this book it brought a lot of joy so maybe the rating is too low. I had a lot of fun working my way through this book.

However I found the illustrations were stretched, blurry and low quality, which was disappointing for the price and the recipes were very simple and basic. I think this would be a great gift for anyone whose a fan of One piece particularly someone just starting to cook for themselves.

I really liked the Kuroko’s Curry recipe and while I’m not usually a fan of fried rice, Sanji’s version is the best I’ve tried yet.

Technically, still reading, and will consult as I make additional recipes, as it is a cookbook, but I have left it on my "currently reading" long enough. Not the first cookbook I've read of course, however I thought it would be fun to list it here, as it is in fact a fun cookbook, inspired by a fun manga and anime series. :) And it's got some interesting and tasty recipes too! Now I know the delights of using daikon radish and miso paste.

This book is unavailable in my country, and I was finally able to get a copy from Spain. I'm happy to see there are easy-to-make recipes with simple ingredients, things I can actually try to make without too much difficulty. I'm very biased, of course, but I'm loving this cookbook. Can't wait to try to make some of these meals!

Very cute cook book for any fans of One Piece. I like how it refers back to the manga panel when it talks about the recipe. Making Luffy’s favorite meat was probably the best recipe I made from the book.

Nice addition to my one piece collection :)

Recipes are good considering that it only covers the early years of One Piece. It doesn’t get a 5/5 because of the few sexist Sanji comments such as “eat these vegetables for the ladies” and “these meaty dishes are perfect for men” like *rolls eyes*

Insanely interesting. Each recipe had amazing illustrations along with a manga moment. Recipes were heavy on seafood. Some raw. Rice, saki, tofu and seaweed. I’m not sure I would eat much of this food. But fun book to read!
