07.2018:

I don't know what to say... this just about broke my heart. I think Given is definitely one of my favourite manga right now. I honestly love all the characters and the story, albeit quite sad, is so, so good. It deals with a pretty heavy topic but despite all of the hurting and melancholy there is also a shimmer of hope and I can't wait to read the next volume. I loved how open Akihiko talked with Uenoyama about Uenoyama's attraction to Mafuyu and I'm also rooting for Akihiko and Haruki.

It's me, and my natural liking for characters that have already died or are inevitably going to die after a short yet impactful amount of screen time, hi, we're the problem, it's us 🥹

"I always thought...that love....was something tender, sweet and affectionate. I realized...that was only a plausible delusion...when I experienced my first love".

"Love someone...is like creating a part of yourself with the softest and thinnest skin. Just a simple touch could make my temperature go up. If they sink their claws in a bit, they can easily tear me up. And if intentionally squeeze my hand tightly, that would be fatal for me."

Mafuyu's past was really heart breaking! I wanted to know more about Yuki, he seemed a lovely caring character and their relationship seemed perfect! but sadly, that's not possible!
p.s: I love the details and short stories Natsuki Kizu put in the book for us! they're so funny 😍

The song from the band’s first live performance A Winter Story has been stuck in my head. Please refer to manga code.10-11 and anime ep.9, I re-read and re-watched it many times as it’s the first climax in Given.

I really want to write about the pair of 幼馴染 childhood friends to lovers, seme 吉田由紀 and uke 佐藤真冬, they’ve spent 10+ years growing up together and loved each other very deeply. They were soulmates why did they have to part?!!

The two boys first met when they were in kindergarten, playing in the same neighborhood park. The uke’s dad would beat him up when he makes noise so he’s very quiet and reserved, eventually the dad got taken away by police. The two boys both come from single parent home with only the mom, they are broken but found each other as their missing piece. The lil seme already decided that he will treasure and protect the lil uke forever.

They have very different personalities, the seme is outgoing and center of attention, the uke is introverted and lives in his head. Opposites attract and they became lovers in middle school, remember back when they had sex for the first time. The seme once said as long as it’s your wish, I would do anything…

When they became high schoolers, the uke went to a different school and he felt left out by seme and two other childhood friends 鹿島柊 and 八木玄純 because they started playing music together. The seme has less time and energy for uke as he’s spending lots of time practicing in the band and working part-time to support the cost.

One winter night, the seme and the uke had a really bad argument, the seme said he will give up music as he can’t live without uke, the uke then asked if the seme would die for him…

Two days later, the seme committed suicide by hanging himself in his room after getting drunk, you can see it from the tipped over stool and cans of beer. The uke hugged onto the guitar and looked up at the seme’s face in shock…

The uke can’t forgive the seme for leaving him behind, he also blames himself for this tragedy and lives on with loneliness. The uke is not able to express his emotions out loud like others. Everywhere he go, the seme is around, as he’s always living in uke’s mind. There’s seme’s shadow in every scene, along with the memories and scents from their past.

After the live performance, the childhood friend 鹿島柊 came up to uke and shared his thoughts. The seme always knew that uke liked music, he remembers the melody from uke’s humming, and he only has the uke in his eyes. The seme wanted to write a song for uke, but the uke wanted the seme to him to play music together instead…

In epilogue of vol 2, the pair went to the seaside on a cold windy winter day. It’s the uke’s first time by the seaside and the seme took back his complains about weather because wanted to leave some good memories. Almost all of uke’s “firsts” are with the seme…

More info about this pair can be found in “Strawberry Swing”, a 4 part short story that came with the anime DVDs, it’s the continuation of vol 3 code.12 when the uke feel asleep after having fever.

The uke remembered the chat with seme’s mom after the seme’s death on a winter night. She received a pack of 12 cup noodles the next day so the seme was still thinking about tomorrow as usual, floating in this world with his so-so sense of survival. She said the seme is a thrill seeker and his death is not related to anything in the past/present/future, because his dad was like that too. She gave the uke the responsibility to hold down the seme like his anchor. She left the red Gibson guitar to uke to keep as it makes her sad, sorry for leaving the uke behind.

The seme’s mom came over to uke’s home the day after Given’s first live performance, she was invited by 鹿島柊. The uke’s mom doesn’t know how to cook congee so the three ended up eating cup noodles. The uke said it’s the first time he cried after the seme’s death, and realized many things for the first time that he couldn’t express previously. He thanked her for the guitar as it gave him salvation.

The uke dreamt of sitting on the swing with the seme on an autumn day where ginko leaves are flying. Many things from the past and present gushed out. The uke asked why is seme not leaving the park, the seme said he will be waiting for the uke in this hole inside his heart. The hole is so big that it will never heal, so he will be listening to uke’s songs from the hole and asked the uke to keep singing in the future.

Listening to Fuyu no Hanashi after reading chapters 10 and 11 made all the emotions I had when watching the anime for the first time resurface. I still get goosebumps when Mafuyu gets to that part when he just starts screaming and the crowd is transfixed, unable to do anything but stare. 🎶🥹🎶

I have no excuse for why it's taken me so long to read this, but I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the anime. I was always a little confused about what exactly Yuki and Mafuyu argued about before his death, but the manga quickly cleared that up. I knew it had to do with Yuki joining a band, but... yeesh. Mafuyu actually said that. 😣

My heart breaks for him. How does one begin to even come back from something like that? The guilt and frustration he must have felt! Plus, he wasn't in contact with his other two friends either?! 😭😭😭

The anime played a crucial role in my appreciation of the band's overall performance and its catharic effect on Mafuyu. The panels in the manga featuring Mafuyu singing are gorgeous to look at, but without the music, its full effect is lost (...at least, to me). I went back and watched the corresponding episode and started tearing up all over again. It was the crowd's reaction and the flashbacks. The look on Uenoyama's face at the end. 🥰 It was as beautiful as it was heartbreaking. 5 stars

Ohhh, my... So, this one... THIS ONE. So. Volume two covers episodes 7, 8, and 9 of the anime. Even so, I slurped it all down pretty readily. It felt a lot shorter than it was, and understandably, the anime cut some important little things out, such as Akihiko's ex's (Ugetsu?) daily life with him, which is actually super dorky and shows they're best friends and Akihiko is kind of a grumpy bug with him, and Ugetsu enjoys teasing him or rolls around on the floor cheering and laughing when lecture gets cancelled. Also... We get more insight on all these character developments that happened in those episodes, such as Mafuyu's friend Hiiragi... always knowing what had happened and feeling guilty for that, wanting forgiveness for that. That's how it was displayed and said in the anime, and in the manga that's all they SAID too, but... they portrayed it that, for their whole lives... Hiiragi knew everything...except the last two days, where everything went wrong. I think that the reason Hiiragi craves forgiveness is because he let something he always, always had sight for their whole lives, fall out of his line of vision, just for a couple days. And in those couple days...tragedy struck, and Yuuki died. THAT is far more human, and far more impactful than my initial impression. I think this one is the truth.
In addition, another thing that didn't make sense in the anime was in Mafuyu's flashback where him and Yuuki were squabbling, we don't hear what Yuuki said, it looks like he might have said something nasty, but we hear Mafuyu's words, "you wouldn't die for me." As they part ways, the next time Mafuyu sees him is his dead body hanging from the ceiling... empty bottles of beer laying around the floor... In the anime, that didn't really make a whole lot of sense. Why would someone kill themselves over a little squabble like that, even if they were drunk? Well, the manga makes that crystal clear.
It's described as tensions were rising, and a little fight ensued, something that would have looked like a little fight to anyone in the world, with nasty words thrown in. But those words and the meaning of their relationship...And that codependence, and the fact Mafuyu shunned Yuuki TWICE in that argument and walked away without even looking back...sent him over the edge. Here's what we got to hear;
"It's always the band with you!!"
"Why don't you trust me?! I can't... I can't live without you!"
"Then why don't you go and die for me?"
So... He did. We must remember, they had a co-dependent relationship since the day they met, they were each other's missing pieces, like two halves of the same puzzle board. Not only that, but they were in their first year of high school when this all happened, a lot of the time you still have middle schooler brain, you're not grown up yet. And for all of them, their world revolved around those four. I don't think they branched out a lot. So... Yuuki drank his sadness away, it wouldn't leave him, Mafuyu's words kept ringing in his ears...until he thought..."Mafuyu wanted it this way. I can't live without him, he can live without me. I'll give him what he wants." and ended it. It hurts my soul, my heart, it brings me to tears. And for Mafuyu to find him like that, why was he in Yuuki's house anyway? Did he want to apologize? Did Yuuki send a text that night (actually, didn't Mafuyu find him at night)? Their winter story was beautiful, with a tragic and far too soon end... Mafuyu just wanted more time with him, and got a little selfish. And Yuuki adored him far too much to not let that rip him open. Hearts really are like guitar strings, pull too much and create too much tension and they break. Lay them across your chest and they're suffocating. But... Mafuyu and Yuuki will always be together in Mafuyu's head and heart, even if everything of Yuuki loses its shape one day, even if his memories have faded one day ten years from now, while it may hurt that he can no longer remember it like it was yesterday or last year, the memory that it happened will always remain. When he recalls it, he may not feel the same he did that day, or any following days, but surely he will still feel something good, and it helped make him into who he is going to be. Even though memories are precious, important, and we don't want to forget, the most important thing is that they happened. Yuuki will always be with him, forever and always. That's part of what it means to truly love someone. That even if life rips the two apart, a large part of them will always remain with the other. For a very long time, they may see their silhouette or their face or their scent in everything, in everywhere, one day that will probably fade. But they'll still see that person in some little things from time to time.
Oh, which reminds me. Another thing we didn't get to see in the anime that we do in the manga that makes more sense is that right before the song is over, right before when Mafuyu turns to Uenoyama then gets teary eyed, he saw Yuuki in the crowd. It freaked him out, definitely. He knew Yuuki wasn't there, but he saw him and it instantly sent his brain the same signals as if he did. Mafuyu had quite literally seen a ghost. He turned to Uenoyama for some reason and Uenoyama gave him the same loving look that Yuuki always had (except Yuuki constantly looked like he was dripping with adoration and unconditional love, like his heart was constantly beating at a different rate from the rest of the human race, just by having Mafuyu in his presence. Which, btw, was illustrated well in the anime but HOLY SHIT it was an absolute masterpiece any time Yuuki was shown in the manga. His love for Mafuyu made him the most beautiful man to ever live, I swear).
All of this, everything, shouting out his feelings, coming to terms with them, actually moving on instead of just freezing under the ice of his own tears, seeing Yuuki in the crowd, turning to Uenoyama only to receive that look of love that's so familiar, the rush of everything, it all brought Mafuyu to tears. I think the biggest part of why he had to leave the stage though was seeing Yuuki and moving past what had happened. He was finally able to admit he can't forgive Yuuki for what happened, but he also can't forgive himself. But he wants to forgive both someday, when he can. He's also finally accepted that he really is lonely, and mad, and sad, and that he might love someone else too. He said he only wishes Yuuki was still here, so that he could tell him all about it...
Now, I've talked all about Mafuyu... But this entire time, Uenoyama has been being swept away by Mafuyu's sound. He thought he had been pushing Mafuyu every step of the way this entire time, but really he had been caught up in Mafuyu's sound and was being led by HIM, all this time. Uenoyama loves his sound, despite his jealousy for Mafuyu loving someone else, he still was able to listen and have so much fun and be filled with love as he was carried along by Mafuyu's voice. So much so that when Mafuyu began to walk off stage, Uenoyama held Mafuyu's head against his chest and led him the rest of the way. Mafuyu began crying against him, passionately thanking him for getting him this far (in terms of coming to terms with his past), this whole live being the first time Mafuyu had expressed SO much emotion in front of Uenoyama... Which... caught up in the heat of the moment of all of this, Uenoyama couldn't resist. He loves him. Mid-sentence in Mafuyu's second thanking him, Uenoyama kisses him, and tangles his fingers in Mafuyu's hair. Once he pulls away, he gently says we need to do another song, and leaves Mafuyu there. Mafuyu just stays...and cries.
Man... This was really the climax of this arc, not gonna lie. Everything that comes after is just the "cleanup crew" of all the bombshells laid down this night. But this was all amazing, I loved it so much, and I feel like after watching it 3+ times and reading the manga, Mafuyu even gave me a better understanding of myself, Yuuki too. Their story was told beautifully. I hope we get to see Mafuyu grow up into a wonderful person, and never let go of the memories he can still hold on to. He seems... kind of like me, actually... He doesn't stop loving a person. But if they're gone, he can love someone else wholly and truly while still loving the person from the past as much as he always had. But it's a different love. It's not anywhere near the same. And it can't be just anyone, it has to be the right someone. I think I really love Mafuyu too, and I was swallowed up by his sound as well.

P.S. the redhead friend of Ueonoyama is actually some soccer champion, like the best in the entire Kanto region, and Uenoyama had no idea. This also wasn't in the anime. I see that boy so much differently now. No wonder he values sports over all else.

P.P.S. I ALMOST FORGOT! The manga also made it a little more clear on the stairs with Haruki and Akihiko, when Akihiko stopped Haruki and thanked him for asking him to join the band. He was trying to say, very awkwardly but very coolly, that by the actions Haruki chose, he helped shape Akihiko into a better person. "Thanks for asking me to join when my nerves were all shot to hell. I used to be a grumpier looking person." He's thanking Haruki for finding him when he needed something and giving him what he didn't know he needed back then. "you're always saving my ass."

The manga does have its cliche moments..but a lot of times that's what Manga is..

"Like I'm supposed to be sexually attracted to women only?".

However..I really can't say enough good things about this...well defined generally appealing characters and it moves along fast enough to not drain you of your liking for said characters.

This volume builds up to the guys first concert and it pays off nicely❤️

2nd volume of manga read for the "30 in 30 Manga Challenge" for the month of November 2022.

Quick review for a quick read. So guess who finished the 2nd manga in this series within a day? :) I finished "Given: Volume 2" shortly after coming off the heels of the first volume. Still a strong start to this particular series. Band is preparing for their first concert, but Mafuyu struggles both to find his voice and finish the song that he's tasked with writing. Most of it has to do with the mess of tangled feelings he has centered on his past as well as his present. Uenoyama's frustrated to say the least, but he's got his own issues to work through in this volume as well. I really liked the build-up of both the characterization as well as the tension leading up to the band's first big concert - it's well drawn and the story beats hit home very well. There were many moments I was just going "Aww <3" throughout. I'm rooting for the happiness of all the boys here, even when their are moments where their emotions are running high and they have to work through them. There's plenty of light and humored moments to be had between to get to know the cast better as well. One thing I appreciate are the smaller stories between the main ones. There are a few bonus stories at the end of this volume that tie things off as well for supplementing the current and former relationships of the cast.

I'm really glad I picked up this series. I know I'll be working my way up to the current volume this month, so I'm taking my time for this monthly challenge. But strong start to my manga reading for the month as well as a strong start to this particular series continuing forward.

Overall score: 4/5 stars.
