A reluctant mail-order bride, a frustrated rancher and an out of control ten year-old....Can this thrown-together family survive tall-tales, shenanigans, and lies in the wild west?
When a little thief robs her while boarding a train to Wichita Falls, Ruby Adams is placed in a difficult situation. Instead of becoming an independent woman by utilizing her prized land certificates she inherited, she is forced to become a mail-order bride instead. Ruby can't ever return to New York City again or her uncle will steal her inheritance and marry her off to someone twice her age to pay his soaring debts.
Then she realizes the boy who stole from her is going to the exact same location and her hopes soar when she discovers he is hiding her certificates in his boots. All she has to do is pretend to be the mail-order bride the rancher ordered and stick around long enough to get what belongs to her!
There is no way she can afford to fall in love with the handsome rancher that makes her heart pound when she looks into his dark eyes.
When Marshall Montgomery inherits a ten-year-old boy in desperate need of a mother, he panics and sends for a mail-order bride. There is no time to spare in his life right now. In order to buy the neighboring property before the due date, he is desperate to get his cattle to market on time. To his delight and surprise, the mail-order bride shows up at the same time his nephew does.
Satisfied, Marshall can now go back to ranch business and let Ruby take over with the boy.
Will Marshall's drive to purchase more land and Ruby's determination to get her certificates back keep them both from seeing what's right in front of them? Can they both put their selfish needs aside for love?
Wichita Falls is a small, American Historical Western frontier town on the Texas prairie where this complete series takes place. Ruby is the first in a series of mail order brides that come to the frontier town in this series that is directed by the infamous matchmaker, Miss Addie.
Towards the end of the book, the author thanks for reading this first attempt at the Mail Order Bride series.
Well... while I don't think I did read the first attempt, meaning the first draft, it also wasn't what I expect a final version to be. The writing was too simple, the main character jumpy in her characteristics, some sentences started one way and finished another, many of the thoughts and themes didn't seem to be fully developed, ... among others.
For 60% I was convinced this would be a 1 star rating. The only reason I even finished reading it, was because of its length, well, shortness. The end was, though predictable, quite nice, so it turned into a 2 star rating.
OK buckle up this one is a doozy. Ruby talking to or dying mother learns that although they have been living with her abusive mean uncle since she was a baby that her mother wants her to leave immediately, because the only way the uncle would take her mother and baby her and was it for mother promised to marry Ruby off at the age of 18 to her uncles friend so at the age of six months she was betrothed to a 40 something-year-old man. Now Ruby leaves to catch the train to Wichita Falls where her aunt Adaline lives. As she sits an open redicule to get her ticket and glance again at the two land grants her mother gave her Ian as she’s doing this young boy runs past grabs a reticule and fleas into a back alley where proper women just don’t go. So now a woman who is sitting on the bench with the man sees her crying and tells her she can take her ticket to Wichita along with these letters she says. So thanking her profusely Ruby runs and catches the train. It’s just sitting there contemplating the days ahead that she cannot eat because of the little thief who took her ridicule and resigned ourselves to starvation for the for seeable future. This is win a midget couple interrupt her thoughts to invite her to dinner is Ruby declined because she says she has no money, the man reminds her that he invited her and is more than happy to pay. So off she goes with the short couple change your dinner at dinner she sees a face she recognizes and the dining car window looking back she is certain it’s the little thief Who stole her reticule. Instead of getting up and going to get a conductor, she goes over to the little thief who is sitting with a nice couple and says oh I think I recognize him I was a teacher last year (which is a big lie) and she says it’s in his name Johnny and the nice lady says oh no his name is William we were just sitting with him because he is on a company and we wanted to make sure he was safe, but unfortunately we are getting off the train in the morning it’s so he will be on his own. Good news Ruby says I am gone to Wichita Falls and will be happy to accompany him. OK essentially what happens is throughout the train ride he refuses to give her her property then tells her he threw a Radick you out the window, But kept the papers inside as they looked important, that alone seems unbelievable. Why would he throw out a Radick you so it’s not the big car with the property but keep papers that is also her property. Either way she is forced to pretend to be Catherine Jackson when getting off in Wichita Falls because she doesn’t want the boy did this trust her. She lies to his uncle so the little thief will not this trust her. Are you understanding what I am saying Plus he has yet to give her her land grants back. So she is going to pretend to be his uncles betrothed so a 10-year-old boy I will give her her property back eventually. Instead of just getting off the train and saying excuse me Mr. Marshall Sara your nephew is a big thief and won’t give me my land grants back. And this is just the first three chapters. This book is holy unbelievable and I didn’t even finish it. I don’t like when they pretend to be someone else why they think they could pull it off is beyond me and to do it so it’s in your old will trust you and give you back land grants you have yet to put your eyeballs on is beyond me. I really love this author and have loved every book I read by her. I can only hope the next one is better. I also didn’t understand why she was so worried about not having money when her aunt Adaline lived in Wichita Falls and ran a boarding house. That’s just one more thing that made no sense to me.
On her deathbed Ruby Adams's mother gives her two land grants to purchase her own land and build her own home in Wichita, Falls, Texas so that she can escape her treacherous uncle. As Ruby boards the train in New York City, a street urchin steals her reticule (small handbag) containing her ticket, her land grants and her cash for the trip. A woman who is also on the platform hands her a ticket and says, “Tell him I am sorry, but I found my true love right here” Ruby soon learns that she holds a ticket and paperwork for Catherine Jackson, a mail-order bride for Marshall Montgomery. She finds her little thief on the train, but he refuses to hand over the documents. She disembarks with him and learns that his uncle is her intended husband. Since Billy and she are now headed to the same home, she can’t reveal her true identity until she finds her papers. To continue I would have to spoil how it all arrives to a happy ending. This book is intended for teen readers and is the first in a series of clean romance short-reads about other characters on a frontier town. I enjoyed it.
Ruby is desperate to escape her cruel Uncle and his idea of an arranged marriage. A young boy has lost his parents to an accident. Both are traveling to Wichita Falls to start new lives. They become entwined in a tale of lies and need to find their way out. Can they release themselves from this web and live a happy and full life? Marshall Montgomery does NOT want a wife, but knows he needs one to Mother his 10 year old nephew. He seeks out Miss Addie to order a bride. He is to become guardian of Billy following the loss of his Sister and her husband. He is unaware of the web of lies that Ruby has woven to recapture the land certificates that Billy has stolen from her before he boarded the train. Will these two travel a rocky path to Happily Ever After? I highly recommend this series! Follow Miss Addy into the life of Wichita Falls!
Wow, I absolutely loved this book. I can't say enough about this wonderful book. It was a Mail Order Bride book. This Mail Order Bride story has been told so many times and in so many ways but, I have to say I have never read one like this. It has a wonderful, original storyline. The amazing, endearing characters pull you in and keep you rooting for them until the end. I loved Marshall and Ruby's story. I love all the books that I have read by this author but, I have to say this is my favorite. I would definitely recommend this book and this author.
This story, featuring Ruby's attempt to outsmart a ten-year-old named Billy, is a delightful read. Ruby's initial deception, posing as Marshall's bride to retrieve land certificates, takes an unexpected turn as she falls in love with both her arranged marriage and Billy. The narrative explores Ruby's evolving perspective on independence and love, showcasing her growth and the complex relationships that develop. The characters are engaging and endearing, making this a charming and heartwarming story.
I love sweet romances but this one had a young tear away named Billy who brought the two heroines together, a lovely written story where you can't help but want to read from start to finish the character of Billy is exceptionally the way he is portrayed you can't help but smile at his cheeky ways. Marshall and Ruby, well I not giving anything away you will just have to read it go on bye it
This book follows the normal type of plot for a mail order bride book, however it did this well with, for me at least, enough of a twist to keep it interesting. I actually read this a while ago and have only just got around to copying my Amazon review onto Goodreads, since then Cyndi is firmly on my list of authors that I love to read.
I had this story a while back, but apparently never posted a review! I just read it again, and once again, thoroughly enjoyed it. Ruby was a very stubborn gal, but through the wise advice from her Aunt Adeline, as well as her growing fondness and love of Marshall and even that little rascal, Billy...she came to know how to love.
I really enjoyed the storyline of this delightful Mail Order Bride. It's good to remember secrets kept will find you...probably at the worst possible time. I recommend Ruby if you went to curl up with a great book and get away!
I loved this book. If the rest of the books in the series are even half as good as this one I will be reading constantly until I finish the series. Cyndi Raye has a way of pulling you into the story right from the start and you don't want it to end. I highly recommend this book.
This is a great read about love in unexpected places. Sweet, gentle and heart warming. worth picking and spending an afternoon curled up in your favorite place to read.😊
I enjoyed this romance with a rambunctious boy working to get the best of Ruby, while Ruby does what she feels she has to do to get back what is rightfully hers. Great characters, and a cute introductory story to this series.
A sweet clean romance with lots of twists and turns. Billy is only 10 years old but he sure knows how to turn the lives of his uncle Marshall Montgomery and a stranger named Ruby Adams upside down to get what he most wants a family of his own.
Wonderful characters and a fantastic plot. Ruby is a pure delight and so is Billy. I am so glad I found this book on Kindle Unlimited. I can't wait to read the next one in this series.Happy ☺reading 📚!
Cyndi Raye is a new author to me and I can't get enough of her writing. Once I started this story I couldn't put it down. The characters were so interesting and the twist and turns to the story kept me involved.
Ruby book 1 from the series Mail Order Brides of Wichita Falls by Cyndi Raye is a relaxing and I enjoyed reading this story very much. Nicely done. My free opinion Thanks
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
3.5 stars. It's sweet, which means there really is no excuse for the profanity. Personal preference aside, it doesn't match the general feel of the book.
With surprises along the way, this book kept mr guessing what would happen. Excellent story. I recommend it to those who like clean historical fiction.
