Eugène Delacroix

Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic school. Delacroix's use of expressive brushstrokes and his study of the optical effects of colour profoundly shaped the work of the Impressionists, while his passion for the exotic inspired the artists of the Symbolist movement. A fine lithographer, Delacroix illustrated various works of William Shakespeare, the Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott and the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

In contrast to the Neoclassical perfectionism of his chief rival Ingres, Delacroix took for his inspiration the art of Rubens and painters of the Venetian Renaissance, with an attendant emphasis on color and movement rather than clarity of outline and carefully modeled form. Dramatic and romantic content characterized the central themes of his maturity, and led him not to the classical models of Greek and Roman art, but to travel in North Africa, in search of the exotic. Friend and spiritual heir to Théodore Géricault, Delacroix was also inspired by Byron, with whom he shared a strong identification with the "forces of the sublime", of nature in often violent action.

However, Delacroix was given neither to sentimentality nor bombast, and his Romanticism was that of an individualist. In the words of Baudelaire, "Delacroix was passionately in love with passion, but coldly determined to express passion as clearly as possible."

I enjoyed seeing and learning a little about Eugene Delacroix and what I found most fascinating was thinking his works were seen by many French writers of his time. I have not read George Sand yet but Balzac, one of my favorite writers was writing as Delacroix was painting. He is not one of my favorite artist but who could look at his "Liberty Leading the People" and not think it is a masterpiece .

"Eugène Delacroix was born on 26 April 1798 at Charenton-Saint-Maurice in Île-de-France, near Paris. His mother was the daughter of the cabinet-maker Jean-François Oeben and it is believed his father, Charles-François Delacroix, was infertile at the time of Eugène’s conception and that his real father was the great diplomat Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, who was a friend of the family and successor of Charles Delacroix as Minister of Foreign Affairs. It was said the artist resembled Talleyrand in both appearance and character. Throughout his career as a painter, Delacroix was protected by Talleyrand, who served successively the Restoration and King Louis-Philippe and worked as ambassador of France in Great Britain. Delacroix’s presumed father, Charles Delacroix, died in 1805 and his mother followed in 1814, leaving 16-year-old Eugène an orphan. "

"Universally regarded as Delacroix’s masterpiece, Liberty Leading the People commemorates the July Revolution of 1830, which resulted in the ousting of King Charles X of France, following his tyrannical repression of election laws. The grand painting depicts a personification of Liberty as a Greek goddess, leading her people forward over the bodies of the fallen, while holding the flag of the French Revolution – the tricolour flag, which remains France’s national flag – in one hand and brandishing a bayoneted musket with the other. The canvas was completed in the autumn of 1830 and in a letter to his brother dated 21 October, the artist wrote: “My bad mood is vanishing thanks to hard work. I’ve embarked on a modern subject — a barricade. And if I haven’t fought for my country, at least I’ll paint for her.” The painting was first exhibited at the official Salon of 1831. "

"Detail — the character Gavroche, from Victor Hugo's novel ‘Les Misérables’, is widely believed to have been inspired by the figure of the pistol-wielding boy. "

"In 1838 Delacroix began work on a double portrait of his two close friends the French Romantic novelist George Sand (1804-76) and the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin (1810-49), who were lovers at the time. The portrait remained in Delacroix’s studio until his death. Shortly afterward, it was cut into two separate works, with Chopin’s segment containing only a head shot, while Sand’s segment shows her upper body, though it is narrowly cut. This led to the loss of large areas of the original canvas. The reason for the divide was most likely due to the belief that two paintings would sell for a higher price than one. Today, Chopin’s portrait is housed at the Louvre in Paris, while Sand’s hangs at Copenhagen’s Ordrupgaard Museum. "

The book deserves 5 stars because of the detailed description of the artists work. The best part of the book are the paintings shown in detail so that you can understand the brilliance of the artist. You will not be disappointed.
