This sequel was so exciting! More world travel, more clues, more (believable) romance, more uncertain allies. Still wish I was connecting more with the characters (I think I'm bitter about how the mom character is used as a huge plot motivator when we literally don't know her at all and couldn't care less) but for the most part this gave me what I felt the first book was lacking!

Sequel Syndrome strikes again. Alas, Map of Fates was, sadly, a disappointment. My excitement and almost-childish awe of the first book dissipated, because the glamour of The Conspiracy of Us somehow failed to etch into its continuation, bringing the dull instead. However, there were two things that somewhat saved me from rating this one poorly: the killer second half and, most importantly, Stellan.
The first half of the book was bland. Flat. Meh. Sigh-inducing. Eye roll worthy. Frustration trigger. Boredom incarnate. All the jumping from one corner of the world to another while breaking (really easily, I might add) into museums and following clues for solving the greatest mystery of all is in theory a great adventure. IN THEORY. In reality though, there was no real blood-pumping action. No real toe-curling romance. No real engaging plot. Hoping for new developments along the way is far from my definition of a plan for saving the world of impending doom. Thus, I was in no way invested into the story and, on top of that, Avery infuriated the hell out of me.
The second half however, was undoubtedly GOOD. I suddenly couldn't put the book down. The action spiced up, the mythology finally conjured something interesting and the characters were developing, even if at a snail's pace. Good stuff, good stuff.
Do not get me started on the love triangle. Jack was so very protective and so very careful that he started to resemble a fretting hen. He ended up being soft and weak and not one time did I imagine him as a knight in shining armor. He was okay in the first book but now he totally aggravated me.
Avery, besides being again one-dimensional and naive, was also awfully dramatic, especially in the romance department. I'm not saying she lamented constantly about having two hot guys at her disposal, but that she was perfectly comfortable in that grey zone of "it's complicated" -- rightfully so -- where she could jump from one boy to another whenever she felt like it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again -- Stellan is the Russian version of Jace and I love him. He was honestly the only character I completely liked -- he was sincere, sarcastic and had layers of personalization. The fact that he was hot was pretty much the cherry on the top. I liked his dynamic with Avery and I can only hope they'll end up together because they'd be a hella power couple.
The secondary characters -- Elodie, Luc, Colette, Lydia, Cole -- were a bit underdeveloped and I would've liked to see them bond more with our trio. Despite that, I did enjoy the teen drama of secrets and past relationships even if it undermined the vibes of "seriously dangerous situation".
Plot wise, there were some boring outcomes and a few really awesome twists and turns I did not expect, especially what the blood union unraveled. The villains took down their masks and it was the OMG type of reveal. On the other hand, I also felt they were not constructed accordingly, like not complex masterminds of evil, but sad substitutes with a fetish for ruling the world and killing left and right.
In the final scenes, I felt the distinctive need to face palm Avery thanks to a 'nice' decision that eventually bit her ass. Granted, the ending felt a bit rushed and not thoroughly developed in order to create the emotional wreck the author (supposedly) hoped for. Still, it was entertaining and promised lots of action for the last installment and I am pretty pumped for what's to come. World War III between the most powerful people in the world, you say? Bring it.
Map of Fates could've been a glorious sequel but, although interesting and satisfactory, no way near the grandeur I thought it will encompass. I know I emphasized a lot of bad aspects, but it is still a good book, though, and I'll definitely read the last one because things are about to get down for real.

I'm torn about this book. It rather dreamily contains elements that I am admittedly fond of, including conspiracies, Russian boys (hah!), glamorous international travel, and some rather swoony scenes.
On the other hand, there's a major element that made me uncomfortable, and I don't know how to process that.
Also the love interests, well, they got a tad messy in this book, with their feelings. There's a clear team I'm rooting for in this book, and I won't say how this book responded to my emotional investment, but I'll just say things got rather tangled.
I am however, quite keenly invested in the sequel, so I'm curious to see how the final act will go down in the third book.

BUT LET ME JUST SAY THIS FIRST. Am I the only one completely annoyed by Avery?! Legit question here.
But asking me to get married wasn't a small favor => Excuuuusee meee, you had one whole book to hear about all this marriage thing, and you still couldn't accept it?
I don’t want to be forced to marry somebody to fulfill the mandate when I seriously doubt it’ll work => Says she wants to do anything to save her mother, cannot even marry a hot guy (Honestly, it's a win-win, dude)
I tossed the napkin onto the mutilated fruit. “We’ve actually gotten really far with the clues, if you hadn’t noticed. Either way, I’m not marrying you.”=> Oh no, you do not take out your anger on food. No fair. You get to stab a rack of ribs, now you just torture poor cherries. What a cruel bastard
Despite all that, here are reasons why I sooooo fell in love *heart eyes* with map of fates
1. Round-the-World Action: we're jumping from one part of the world to another, fending off Scarface and it's a race against time to find an uber ancient and super valuable treasure
2. The OTP moments: look, I don't care which ship you're on but everyone gets a little something here.
Jack and Avery fans see little couple cuteness, few jealous retorts and the "like-an-old-married-couple" fights.
Stellan and Avery fans will squeal and drool over certain scenes…BELIEVE ME. I DID.

Okay, there's only so much I can or want to say this early, because Maggie's my CP and I got to read this reallllly early (MAJOR PERK OF LIFE), and I know it'll have changed a lot by the time it's in a finished version, BUT, three things I already love so much I know any version of this would be five stars for me:
1. Avery's character arc. I loved watching Avery grow in The Conspiracy of Us, but that's from "ordinary girl" to, well, spoiler alert. But this book is about her fine tuning, and taking control, and strengthening herself physically and mentally, and I didn't realize how hard that was to do - to show that next-level growth in a book 2 - til I found myself marveling over how well it's done here over and over.
2. The settings. Hot damn. Here is a reason that I absolutely love these books: not only does Maggie write setting gorgeously, and knowledgeably, but she does so with so much love and respect for places all over the world that I swear they glow on the pages. There's so much rich detail, and I love that the perspective of each city through Avery's eyes is one of observation and awe rather than the xenophobic bent that comes up a lot in books set outside the US with American main characters.
3. SO HOT. Just...so hot. I can't even say anything else about that, but let's just say Maggie fielded a lot of borderline filthy texts from me, and I apologize for nothing.

As you can see in my review of book 1, I adored the story that Maggie wove. It ended on such a strong point, that I was dying to get my hands on the sequel, and finally bought it when I was in America in March. The events of Map of Fates take place not long after The Conspiracy of Us ended. Avery, Jack, and Stellan are searching for more clues to the lost tomb of Alexander, and know that the Order are bearing down on them at every turn. They've been given a two week reprieve from the Order, but if they haven't got the location in that time, Avery's mam will be killed. Avery feels her only option is to turn to her newly discovered family, the Saxons, and hope that with their help, it'll allow them the chance to visit more places and hurry the whole search along.
I'd expected there to be many twists and turns in the book, but I couldn't believe just how intricate the plot was. Maggie has created a wonderful underground world, in which the Circle rule the world, unbeknownst to the masses. Everything and anything happens with the say so of the Circle members, and the Order have stepped up their game. With the prophecy stating that when the girl with the purple eyes (Avery), unites with the One true heir, all the heirs of the Circle families are at risk. Many of them are assassinated, just to try to stop the prophecy coming true. Only Avery, Jack, and Stellan know Stellan is the one, and they need to keep that a secret as long as possible, else it'll interrupt the search for Alexander's tomb.
One thing I wasn't too keen on in this book is the love triangle. It had been brewing from the very first meeting, but I'd always preferred Jack, as, it seems, did Avery. Now, we find Jack to be annoying, and very pushy with Avery - he tries to stop her from doing anything. And yes, it's because he cares about her, and wants her to be safe, but wrapping her up in cotton wool is not the way to go. At least Stellan understood that any situation Avery was in would be dangerous, and she needed to at least learn how to defend herself, and stand up for herself, or she'd be a liability to them all. By the end of the book, I was a lot more keen on Stellan, especially when more and more revelations came out.
On the subject of revelations, so many things were revealed towards the end of the book, I could hardly get my head around it all. At every turn, there was a new twist, and each was more significant than the last. I was on the edge of my seat until the final page, and even when I was finished, I was dying for more. Like with book 1, the ending is going to have so many consequences for all of the characters, and the final book is going to be a killer, I just know it.
I originally picked up this series because I'd heard so many glowing reviews, and if anything has a mention of Alexander the Great in it, I'm bound to want it. I'm in the middle of a module on Alexander, and should be writing my assignment right now, but instead I'm doing this (priorities ;p). Even though the whole situation with the Circle, and the true heir isn't factually correct, the way Maggie has constructed the whole plot makes you forget about it all. Honestly, I'd recommend this series to anyone, even if they have no interest in ancient history, because, by being set in the modern world, it only needs a hint of history to make it interesting. I think this may be one of my favourite series, and I'm dying to read book 3 when it comes out.

An awesome follow up to the first book. The story and characters are developed so much more in this one!

July 6, 2021This book was so fun! Definitely a great sequel to The Conspiracy of Us! There is travel and romance and excitement galore. Maggie's writing has great pacing, and she knows just how much description to add to ground you in each foreign setting without the story feeling bogged down in details.
Map of Fates is a slim sequel, but I think it set up for an exciting finale. Can't wait to see where Avery, Stellan, Jack, Elodie, and crew go from here!

Map of Fates was ultimately way better read than the first book, and after that ending I'm curious to see how this series will end.
I still think some things just don't quite make sense, it's still pretty much silly read at times(though not nearly as much as book one), and I'm not really invested in any of the characters, there's also way too much present love-triangle and the heroine'S damn indecisiveness about the two guys, yet..
I felt like this book was such an imporvement in terms of the storyline - more balanced and captivating plot from start to finish - plus great plot-twists, also in terms of the characters: Especially the heroine who, while I still didn't love, grew quite a bit throughout this book and is on her way to be the person I hoped she would be from the beginnig. Yes she's not 100% likeable for me - still sometimes annoying with her inability to decide for one of the love-interests - but I really do have hopes for her in the finale instalment.
Ironically enough, the character who I was annoyed the most with in this one was Jack, not the heroine. I liked him in book one far more than Avery, here though, somewhere along the way I started to dislike his character quite a bit.
And then there's Stellan, who seemed like a character with some potential from the beginning, and here he got even more so intriguing, yet I need something more from him to determine if I truly like his character or not. All I can say is that there are some great scenes with him and he has lots of potential for the finale. Also, while I don't really ship anyone in this book, I definitely do prefer one of them with her. (And I'm sure it's obvious as to whom).

I'm le sad. I was so pleasantly surprised by the first book, but this one was a let down. WAY too focused on the love triangle aspect for my taste.

This was much better than the first one.
I again had some trouble connecting with Avery. She's still a bit whiny, but she's going through some things, so it makes sense. There's some definite growth from her and by the end of the book, she seems to have the potential to be a formidable opponent.
My main complaint was the back and forth with the boys. That got old pretty quickly. This time around had me rooting for one of them right away and I'm hoping I get the outcome I want.
Overall, a lot of action, a lot of answers, a lot of twists I didn't see coming, and one hell of an ending. I can't wait to see how it all ends.

Map of Fates by Maggie Hall is the second book in The Conspiracy of Us trilogy and while I hadn’t been as invested in the first book as I had hoped, the cliffhanger ending left my interest piqued enough to continue reading. Plus, the cover of Map of Fates is one of the prettiest of the year in my opinion! One of the elements I took the most issue with in the first book is the love triangle between the main character Avery and two of the guards from the twelve ruling families, Jack and Stellan. I’m not a huge fan of love triangles in general but if they’re done well I’m able to get behind them. In The Conspiracy of Us I didn’t quite understand or ever get the feeling that Avery and Stellan could potentially be interested in one another but Hall did a much better job of making it believable in Map of Fates. In fact, I ended up liking Stellan a whole lot more than I ever expected to. I suffered a bit through the beginning of the book, having read The Conspiracy of Us within the week it debuted last year because I couldn’t quite remember which character was which and it took me some time to acclimate to each’s demeanor once again. If you’re in the same boat I would suggest a book one re-read or to read your past review / Goodreads so you’re able to jump right in and avoid any confusion.
My favorite part of The Conspiracy of Us is the amount of travel the characters undergo because it allows the reader to experience new places without ever having to leave their couch. The travel aspect remained one of the driving forces of my interest in Map of Fates and I cannot wait to see where they’ll be exploring in book three. The revelation at the end and the new pieces of information the characters were able to ascertain from the clues have left me craving the conclusion. The stakes are high, the structure of the twelve ruling families is inevitably going to be evolving and Avery West is at odds with many leaders in the Circle. I couldn’t have asked for a more exciting installment!
Final Thoughts: Map of Fates by Maggie Hall is a much better installment in The Conspiracy of Us trilogy than book one. I had very minimal complaints this time around (although I’m still not very invested in Avery’s character) and I found myself flying through this quick paced YA thriller. If you enjoy media involving espionage and have a case of wanderlust, Map of Fates will leave you feeling satisfied. If you had mediocre feelings about book one, I can promise that Map of Fates will draw you in further.

Okay, so Map of Fates continues the over-the-top conspiracy theories mixed with globe-trotting and dangerous adventures. People keep dying, and the plot twists just keep hitting you but more importantly, the kissing. I'm just here for the kissing and... the more than kissing.

Avery seemed more grounded and logical in this. Also, Jack and Stellan moved beyond just hot, mysterious boys thankfully as we learned more about them. I only lose my cool for Stellan though my loyalties are non-changing.
As the overall mystery cloud of the secrets disappears, the plot moves along very well. I guessed the "big" thing maybe, but I'm excited for the conclusion. It's a fun series that is ambitious in content but it's still pretty YA.

When I received Map of Fates by Maggie Hall I immediately realized I still needed to read The Conspiracy of Us and it was for no other reason than the fact that I just hadn’t gotten to it. I honestly have no idea why I waited so long to start this series as it has non-stop action and intrigue…all stuff I love.
Map of Fates picks up where The Conspiracy of Us left off. Avery has figured out what she is supposed to be destined for and how she fits into the Circle but she isn’t prepared to just do whatever her family wants her to. I loved that at this point she is still growing into her new role and we get to see her change over the course of this book (even more so than she did in book one). As she learns who she can trust and who she can’t she isn’t someone who will just take things at face value by the end of this book and unfortunately it is because she has been burned over and over by these people.
As Avery jumps around the world with Jack, Stellan, and the rest of the crew, she is looking to solve the bigger mystery not only to save her mother but to also protect herself. What I loved about what Hall did with this book was that she took us around the world right with Avery. We got to run through museums and hang out on a boat in Cannes right alongside her. I thought Hall did a fantastic job of creating the environment around her so that it felt like I was there too.
I admit, I am officially in the Jack camp and I was absolutely waiting for the shoe to drop throughout this entire book. There is no question here that Avery has feelings for both guys (at least no question to me) and it was pretty obvious that things were not going to be as easy for Avery in the relationship department as I was hoping.
Regarding secondary characters – I thought bringing Avery’s family into the mix the way she did was great. I know that is vague…sorry, not sorry. I don’t want to give anything away around the “family” dynamics here. Just know that while Avery is traveling around to meet all these Circle heirs, she is not out of danger.
This was a great book two and the story definitely moved forward. It was great to dive into this series and read books one and two back to back because I rarely get the opportunity to read series books back to back. It was a nice change of pace to not have to wait for the next book but now…I have to wait for book three. Oh well – I can have a bit of patience.
If you are looking for a book that will take you on a wild ride and have you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what is going to happen next, definitely consider checking this one out. I enjoyed it (both books actually) and am definitely looking forward to the next book.

This has somehow turned from a stereotypical young adult series to an astounding, jaw-dropping read. Map of Fates was full of so many incredible and unpredictable plot twists that I'm suffering from proverbial whiplash. I need more Avery and Stellan right this second!

It’s kind of really concerning to me that I finished this book in like one night. Like I started this book at midnight read until 1:30 slept and then read for like half an hour and finished. Wowzers. Also it was great. My besties Avery and Stellan finally kissed and it was amazing.

I actually really liked it, like in the aftermath. At first I was feeling a real 4 star vibe but its not a 4.5 star vibe so lets make it 0.25 more.
(I want to put it out there that this review is literally just me spewing (great imagery) out thoughts. It's written in the same manner as how I talk, which is horribly ungrammatical and most definitely ineloquent. And I know, I have a problem with the word--like. I've got to let it go.)
See Maggie’s scrumptious offering is like my guilty pleasure. She’s not the prose that I would gravitate towards, because I like my servings with loads of pretentiousness and this serves a little more of reality. It’s plain englisho (what were you on when you wrote that jess, because this was not plain english lol), as plain as that can be with a few scatterings of french and russian. The reason why I have such a soft heart when it comes to this series is because it’s literally a re-imagining of like this dream I used to have. I love a bit of international travelling coupled with some hot guys, money and a good conspiracy. All my little favourite children in one book.
The character development is alright. I mean, nothing to call home about. The flitting from dude to dude is a bit annoying but I guess it didn’t get on my nerves as much because tbh I don’t even consider Jack a candidate. Like my brain becomes a vegetable whenever he is around so I can kind of tune him out. Hence why I’m like immune.
Stellan on the other hand, sweet baby Jesus. Come to mama. Big fan. Great banter. Respect for gender equality. The chemistry with him feels natural. With Jack, it feels stoic, to the point where I’m confused about Jack’s characterisation because their lacks this depth that you often see with actual human beings. Like I know he’s a great martyr and all but why. I don’t understand his motivations and I don’t get why he gets to be held above everyone else? With Stellan I kinda see him as more nuanced and therefore he is easier to bounce off, as a character.
A bit crap with the bechdel test when you consider the women in this book.
But what’s with all the POCs deaths Mags, I was rooting for you. But other than that, great book.

If I thought I loved the first book, then I don't even know what feelings I have towards this one. The second installment is even bigger and better and more adventurous than the first.
We pick up a couple weeks following the conclusion of the first novel. I love when authors do this because it allows our characters to have a new goal in mind and helps beat that second book slump. This second book definitely did not have second book slump. AT ALL. Ugh it was just phenomenal. I feel even more in love with these characters, especially Avery and Stellan. Avery really begins to shine and come into her own in this novel, as she becomes more familiar and comfortable with this new world. Then there is Stellan. Oh my precious baby Stellan. I thought I loved Jack and Avery together in book one, but I did not even know what I had coming for me. Stellan is a cinnamon roll. And I love him.
Basically if you enjoyed the first novel, then I definitely think the second will not disappoint. It is a series that is still fast paced, full of clues and secrets, and adventure around every corner. I loved it.
