OH MY GOODNESS SO MANY THOUGHTS + FEELINGS ON THESE THREE BOOKS THAT MAKE UP VOLUME ONE.
I got the book and read all the synopses first from the back cover + the last pages. Which meant I read the summaries of all 12 books in the series and was like, "ummm yep we know where this is going". And guess what. IT'S ALL SO SPOILERY ABOUT THE OUTCOME OF THE ROMANCE. Any romantic tension there was supposed to be is now ... DEAD.
Let's begin by talking about the good things before I start ranting and offend some fan 😂
. I am obviously not the target audience, which might explain why I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have. I'm too old, too mature (haha?? Look at my self praise) for this main character. I think the book would be best for 12/13 year olds who love a generous dose of clean romance + important life lessons for girls about friends + peer pressure + making good choices. Christy deals with things that I assume most girls would have to face at some point - friends, peer pressure, trouble that others teens get into, crushes, insecurities about looks, adults meddling in her life, etc. I have been super sheltered in a good environment for my whole life + learn stuff the easy way (aka NOT from experience) so I'm mostly like, 'is this what it means to have friends? Cos I never had any friends' 😆
. So yes I THINK YOUNGER GIRLS IN THE RIGHT AGE GROUP COULD LEARN GOOD STUFF FROM HERE.
. I really like the settings/vibes?? California, beach, fancy house, shopping malls, small town, big church, school, restaurants and cafes ... etc. All felt really ordinary + beautiful + easy to imagine.
. It was attention-holding, I must confess. I read through in three days and was really interested to know what happens next.
. I laughed a lot. But not necessarily over the good stuff 😐
. The characters were nice? I mean other than Christy being immature and Todd being perfect and Rick being a questionable red herring, everyone else was really fun? Sure there were some jerks + stupid kids + annoying adults but they really were colorful and varied and I enjoyed reading about them. They all had struggles + conflicts to work through and no one was perfect (ya know, other than Todd).
Ok now for the bad stuff??? HAHA HERE WE COME.
. Christy was so immature.
Like literally, I quote:
"They waited and waited. Finally, at seven, Uncle Bob started suggesting why Todd was late ... 'Maybe he chickened out!' ... Tears filled Christy's eyes."
I mean, MY DUDE, don't you understand a joke when you hear one???
Christy starts out at fourteen. Too worried about her looks, too whiney, too jealous, too naive, too inexperienced in every way for the plot of how-she-gets-a-boyfriend.
Now, I think a lot of us can agree 14 is too young for a boyfriend. Hmm? But let's just say for critical purposes that we agree kids can have boyfriends at 14 if they are ready for it.
CHRISTY IS SO SO SO NOT READY.
The one time one of the guys acts like a boy in joking + laughing + being loud all she can say is, ‘ugh why is he acting like such a brat??’
And spoiler - she doesn't ACTUALLY get a boyfriend in these books, but the entire plot revolves around her thinking + crushing on these couple of guys and wondering if they like her + trying to spend time with them + trying to make them like her.
Which brings us to point two.
. THESE GUYS ARE LIKE TWO GRADES ABOVE HER.
I was complaining about this to my mom who said, maybe it's a case of girls maturing faster than boys? And I was like HAR HAR I see no evidence of that whatsoever.
Did I tell you how immature Christy is? Well lemme say - HER TWO BOYFRIEND CANDIDATES ARE SO ... UGH ... PERFECT.
Which means, ummm yes they act all mature + caring.
Todd is like the ... idk same as every other boyfriend I ever encountered in fiction. Tall, so handsome, blond, friendly when no one else is, super sweet and kind and gentle and funny and caring, and OOOHHH A CHRISTIAN. Extra points???
*stifles growls*
While you read, he makes you go, awww, but as soon as you're done you're like, ummm can we call this enormous spider walking around the house Todd cos I wanna yell at him. (That was me, literally.)
Then there's Rick. Low key jerk. He seemed nice enough but he knows Christy can't date till she's 16 so WHY THE HECK ARE YOU TRYING TO GET SO ROMANTIC WITH HER MY DUDE WHY??? (Spoiler, Rick is not "the one".)
. Oh yeah and did I tell you she meets Todd in chapter four? Yeah, so unique 🙄
. And she's praying "I want a second chance with Rick + I want everything with Todd to be exactly like last summer". Which part of running after two guys do you not understand Christy?? I hate love triangles in which we all know which guy is the jerk + I doubly hate the love triangle in which the girl is running after both of them and THAT. IS. CHRISTY.
There was this one part in which a friend says, why don't you try to make Todd jealous? And Christy is like, idk, but she accidentally DOES and Todd gets mad and I'm like, wow I'll just sit back and enjoy watching you suffer these consequences for a little while.
. And her parents tell her she can't date till she's 16. SO TELL ME MY DEAR, WHY DON'T YOU STOP THINKING ABOUT THESE GUYS ROMANTICALLY UNTIL THEN.
. Yeah I had major problems with the romance in here.
. I also feel like the books could have explored other things so much more. Like her relationship with her brother. She thinks he's a brat. And when Todd starts teaching him to surf she's whining like 'oh why is he playing with me bro and isn't spending time with me??'
Christy dear, let me tell you something. Of all the impressive things Todd could do this is a top notch quality. DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S LITTLE SIBLINGS?? If I ever see a teen who can hit is with kids my opinion of them goes up threefold.
. Also her parents. Family life was sorely lacking. We suddenly find out in book 3 that 'things started to get better when they started going to church' SO WHY WAS IT NOT MENTIONED BEFORE?? Christy has very average relationships with her parents, and while it began to improve in book 3, WHERE ARE THEY HALF THE TIME??
. And yeah this has Christian messages/themes but really not in an outstanding way. Christy has not been reading her Bible or talking about Christian things with Christian friends and she only prays when she has some sort of conflict and still she says, JESUS IS LIVING INSIDE ME AND IS AS REAL AS ANY PERSON I KNOW. I don't see much evidence of that. In my experience the more time you spend with Jesus the more he'll be alive to you and I don't see Christy doing that. I MEAN, YES, WE ALL STRUGGLE LIKE CHRISTY. We struggle to grow closer to God and to follow him above all the other drowning voices but from a Christian book that has SO MUCH TIME to focus on romance where was the time to make Christy grow a little more as a Christian + as a good family member???
SO YEP. RANT OVER.
To some tweenage girls who ask, ‘can you recommend me a Christian romance book about young girls?’ I /might/ say, ‘try Christy Miller.’
‘Though you'll probably be better of not reading romance at all.'
The thing is, I am still super hesitant to recommend this to anyone - especially YOUNGER girls - because reading about Christy's constant thoughts about guys might influence similar thoughts in readers 😕
So ... I can't say I really recommend.
I LOW KEY ENJOYED READING THESE FROM MY MATURE PERSPECTIVE but I don’t know if I can put up with nine more books of Christy + the love squares that are certain to crop up.
I LOVED this series! I myself, am an avid reader, so I read the books in the time span of about three months. Before I found this book, I had been in this sort of, "slump" if you will, where I thought that all the books I was reading, all had the same type of plot, the same sort of sappy love story etc. and I was growing especially tired of reading the same thing over and over again. Then one day at the library, I found the first volume of this series, and thought, "Hey why not, the synopsis looks pretty good, it contains the first threee books in it..." So I checked it out and went home, only to read the book in less then three days, to return to the library aferwards to check out the second volume and so on. I even went so far as to put a hold on some of the copies that my library didn't have, which is a whole new experience for me. Any Christian teen, looking for an uplifting story, good morals, holding out for a hero, and the importance of centering your life on Christ, this is a must read! :)
I can't believe I liked these books when I was younger...
Christy is annoying.
Todd is flippant.
The whole book is problematic. Also, I'm a very insecure person, I don't read books to read about insecurities, especially those that aren't addressed.
I adore this series. It is really the reason I'm a Christian today. I was losing faith when I read this book and Christy spoke perfectly of my situation.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 I absolutely loved this series! This is such an awesome series for Christian teenage girls (or for anybody, really😙) Sometimes the main character can be super annoying at times and that causes me to dislike the book, but I really enjoyed reading from Christy's relatable perspective and hearing her thoughts :) She never got boring, lol! Thank you Robin Jones Gunn for this series <3 Cheers 🍻 (Content: Language: none Explicit content: none drugs/alcohol: brief use of illegal drugs by side characters. However, it was clearly stated that it was wrong and was not glorified whatsoever.)
My almost-teenaged-girl read this and loved it because she said it was very real and, although a Christian novel, didn't "force" the Christianity into the story, but did it in a very natural way. I was intrigued and wanted to read it for myself. The author does a really good job of developing the characters and capturing the turmoil and emotional insecurities of growing up. While the protagonist is exposed to much more than my daughter has ever been exposed to (drugs, drinking, sex, and in later books, eating disorders) it is done so in a way that shows the merit of Christy's good choices to not engage in these behaviors, and produced ripe opportunities to have conversations on these topics with my daughter. I have to admit, I couldn't put it down, and we have since ordered volumes 2-4. I can't prevent my little girl from growing up, but I feel good that she is reading books like this that will give her a solid perspective of what good friends really look like and the negative consequences of bowing to peer pressure.
I do my reviews in the form of a letter, which is why they are written like this.
Dear Robin Jones Gunn,
I am going to review each book separately, since this is a volume with three books.
Summer Promise-
Well, what can I say? I remember the first time I picked up this book. I was twelve, and it was DEAR Friday. I had nothing better to read, and I picked it up because the spine was pink and it looked interesting. I read through some of it, and I thought it was okay. I ended up getting really sick that weekend, so as I lay around I picked up this book and read it. I got hooked. Even though Christy was two years older than me, I felt like I could understand her. She was very sweet and innocent, and I feel like her journey towards Christ was realistic. And Todd! Oh, Todd. Todd is the perfect crush. He loves God with his whole heart, and he respects Christy a whole ton. Without a doubt, their romance is the best part of the book! Uncle Bob, Doug, Tracy, and Alissa were all characters that I liked. I couldn't stand Aunt Marti, or even Shawn, for the short while that he was there. And the kiss! Oh, gosh. #firstkissgoals It was innocent and sweet, which I liked. It wasn't all passionate and all gross and stuff. It was just sweet. So anyways, thank you for writing this book!
I'm A Whisper and A Wish-
This is probably my least favorite of the books in this volume. I don't dislike it at all, but I just don't like it as much as the other ones. It was a little hard to transition from Christy's summer life to her actual life. I got to meet her parents and David for the first time. I like her parents, and I admire their way of doing things. I just sort of wish that Christy was closer to them. Their family seemed functional, but a bit too cold for my taste. Other than those two, we also got to meet Katie, Janelle, Brittany, and Rick. Katie doesn't really play a huge part in this book, but I know she will later on. It's kind of cool how you didn't mean to make her important, but she ended up being that way. Janelle is only big in this book, but I like her. She's funny and kind. I can't stand Brittany. I felt so bad for her! The only thing that did seem a little bit off for me is that people that struggle with bulimia are usually not very skinny. Anorexic people are the skinny ones. Brittany was an awful friend! She lied and stole and cared WAY too much about her weight. Rick isn't too bad in this book, but since he isn't Todd I don't like him. Christy has grown a little. I can tell by the way she makes decisions and trusts the Lord. I like how she grows her own spine in this book. :) I wish there was more Todd in this book! He's so perfect. Anyways, this is a worthy successor, and I like this book. Thank you for writing it!
Yours Forever-
*sigh* That's really all I can do after reading this book. It's one of my favorite of the whole series. :) We didn't get to meet any new characters. Rick was there (and he's starting to get annoying), and Katie was there, but only for a short while. Christy's family was there, and I got to see how much they have changed. Aunt Marti is still very annoying and controlling, but after learning about Johanna I feel sort of bad for her. Bob is great. And then there was Tracy and Doug. They were so perfect. Of course, we shall never forget Todd. Todd=Perfection He's such a God-fearer and I can tell how much he likes Christy. He can be a little clueless, though. Christy has grown in her understanding. She's closer to Christ now, and she also has her own spine. I like this book because you're realistic. Even though Christy is a Christian, her life isn't perfect. In fact, in this one things get really messed up! But I love how it's about how God gives us second chances. :) I shall not forget about the kiss. I love that Todd gave her the Forever bracelet. It was so SWEET!!!
All in all, I am beyond grateful that you wrote these books. I love Christy Miller! Thank you Robin Jones Gunn!
Sincerely, Lena Marie

This book was… okay. I mean, I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either. I didn’t really like Christy as a main character. I kinda felt like she was the embodiment of the teenage girl stereotype. I mean, yes, I know that girls think about how they look and about boys - I do too! - but Christy just thought of it TOO much. A lot of the “Christianly” points were really good and there were some points of the book that I enjoyed but overall they didn’t really make up for the parts that I didn’t like. I just don’t really think I’m going to read the other books.
I enjoyed parts of this book, but found myself inwardly cringing through much of it, unable to do anything but watch Christy make one mistake after another.
Christy pretty much drove me nuts. She is EXTREMELY moody. One moment she's falling in love with Todd, the next she's completely flipping out, yelling and chucking her sandals at him. She obsessed over him and would blow up over dumb stuff and make an idiot of herself. But there were times I have to say I understood Christy's frustration with him. He sometimes left ME wondering. He was soooo nonchalant about EVERYTHING including his friendship with Christy. It's like he liked her, but half the time acted like it didn't really matter or something. He could take it or leave it. Which is why I woulda just been like "Kay, call me if you ever decide you really like me or not, bye!" And tried to forget about him.
I mean, I guess Todd just didn't want to jump into a serious relationship too quickly. He wanted to take his time and become good friends first, which is smart and all, but it seemed like he went about it the wrong way. It often came across like Christy wasn't all that important to him. I guess that's just his personality, I don't know.
Honestly I don't even get what Todd See's in Christy. She's crazy! Like I said, at the beginning of the book, she barely knows him and is already obsessing. She easily gets jealous, she's whiny. She's so immature in the way she handles things, I'm just like STOP BEING RIDICULOUS!!! And okay, she's only fifteen, but still. After the blow-up over the nothing between him and Tracy, and then the Disneyland incident, I just don't get why he's still interested. He should run far far away as fast as he can in the opposite direction!
Despite all that, I have hope that as Christy grows as a Christian and matures, she'll stop being so annoying and so I do plan on reading volume 2 of the Christy Miller series. I've heard too many good things about this series to give up on it yet. I have to say though that I think if I'd read this book several years ago I would have loved it. I'm thinking this series is probably best for younger teens.
Overall *3.5* I finished this book a few days ago. It was interesting. I’m glad that I’ve read what was one of the “classic” ya Christian fiction books, and I can see how it could be popular. There was just a lot of drama and annoyance, but also some good faith moments. I didn’t mind some of the friend drama, but the romance drama was bothering me cuz I felt like Christy was alluding some of these guys too early. I liked the third book and Todd and the faith.
Content: there’s a lot of teen drama, some kisses (lightly detailed), out of wedlock pregnancy, drugs, bulimia, drinking, and probably some more, it is Christian so know that it’s handled that way
This book is a three-books-in-one volume, so I’ve given an overview of each story below. I think these books are great. They follow fifteen-year-old Christy Miller as she struggles through her teenage years. They are well-written and fun. Christy is an endearing character who gets into a lot of mischief just trying to live life. I highly recommend this series to teen girls of all ages.
Book 1 Summer Promise Christy Miller is thrilled to spend the summer with her aunt and uncle in Newport Beach, California. But Christy doesn’t fit in. Her skin is pale and her swimsuit is old and green. Aunt Marti gives her a makeover that includes a new hairstyle and wardrobe. Christy’s hair is so short, now, and the clothes might not be her favorite styles, but she does feel older and sophisticated. She decides that she likes her new look.
Christy also likes a cute surfer named Todd, but she isn’t sure he likes her back. She’s invited to a get-together one night and hopes that Todd will be there. Instead, she discovers a wild party with deadly consequences. Christy struggles to understand what’s happened and how to move forward. Can Christy find her true self without breaking her summer promise?
Book 2 A Whisper and a Wish Christy’s life is changing. Her family is moving to California, but before Christy can get too excited, she discovers that her family won’t live in Newport Beach like Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob. Christy’s dad gets a job in Escondido, an hour and a half away from the beach and Christy’s friends. Christy has to start over making new friends. She doesn’t have as much freedom with her parents as she had with Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob. There are a lot more rules to follow at home. And a brush with the law on a trip to Palm Springs won’t help prove to her parents that she’s growing up. Can Christy do what’s right and still obey her parents?
Book 3 Yours Forever Christy can’t wait to spend Christmas in Newport Beach. Not only will she see all her beach friends, but Todd has moved to Newport Beach permanently! Christy is confused about her relationship with Todd. He never says anything to help her understand how he feels. Her friend, Heather, talks Christy into flirting with Doug to make Todd jealous, but this only seems to make everyone mad at her. Why are relationships so hard? Even Aunt Marti isn’t speaking to Christy!
Again, I highly recommend this series for girls ages 12 and up. Christy is a delight to read and she struggles with a lot of tough things in this series. There are four, three-book volumes in the re-released series, and a college years volume.
Great book! Although i am not in my teenage years anymore and have been in the Lord for a few years, this book i believe allows young kids to connnecy and understand how the Lord moves and works. There are real life examples that Christy first handedly experiences herself. The author solves the issue and shows how God always pulls through! A great read! Teens young and old can definitely relate to thos book. Great revelation!
The Christy Miller Series is a great read for teenage girls... Rachael and I loved them back in junior high and high school. It follows one girl's life of becoming a Christian as a teen, then her struggles and joys of the teenage years.
The Christy Miller series is one of my favorite series I've ever read. Robin Jones Gunn is also one of my favorite authors. All of the volumes have 3 books in them. They are also fairly easy reads and the book length is pretty easy to get through without getting bored which is perfect for preteens and teeangers. You will not find any unnecessary language or inappropriatness in the series either. This first volume contains: Summer Promise, A Whisper and a Wish, and Yours Forever. The Christy Miller series is a Christian series but I really think everyone whether they are of faith or not should read the series because it just helped me so much during my teen years and I still read through the series every year if I can manage it. It seemed like every single time I went through something during my teen years, Christy had a book that dealt with her having to deal with the same issues and that really helped me. I'm so thankful that Robin wrote these books for us.
Summer Promise finds Wisconsin-native Christy Miller, a fourteen year old girl, in Newport Beach, CA, staying with her wealthy aunt and uncle for the summer. She meets a group of teenagers a bit older than her on the beach and they befriend her. Nearly all of them are Christians and they help show Christy (who thinks she is automatically a Christian because she was baptized as a baby and has gone to church her whole life) who Christ is through their lives. Christy sees that she is missing something in her life that they have and she wants it. After a chain of events involving the death of one of her new beach acquaintances, Christy is hit with a lot of doubt about eternity and where she will go after she dies. Todd Spencer (I swear, if you read this book, you will forever compare guys to Todd...and possibly say that you're waiting for your "Todd"...not that I do that....) really helps Christy along in finding what she is missing. And what she finds changes her life forever.
Review: Summer Promise is one of my favorite books of the series. It's what introduced me to Christy and to Todd and the gang. This book helped me figure out that I really wanted to wait for a winner like Todd and just not any guy who comes along. Though I've never dealt with any of the issues in this particular book, it's still one of my favorites.
A Whisper and a Wish fastforwards to fifteen year old Christy's sophomore year of high school. Her family recently moved to Escondido, CA, because they couldn't afford the farm they lived on in Wisconson any longer. Christy has a hard time adjusting to the changes but she makes some new friends and settles in. However not all of her friends have the best qualities about them, including a girl dealing with an eating disorder. After a big misunderstanding and an arrest, Christy realizes that not everyone has the same interests and standards in life as she has and learns to pick better friends. This is also the first book in which Rick (or Slick Rick if you want to call him that) shows up. Rick is instantly drawn to Christy and insists on wanting to date her. But Christy's heart is still with Todd.
Review: This book is one of my least favorites. I really do not like Rick even after all of Robin's writings about him. I will forever be a Todd girl. However I do appreciate this book for what it brings to the series and what it can do to help other readers.
Yours Forever follows Christy to a Christmas trip to Newport Beach to visit her aunt and uncle...and for Christy to finally be reunited with Todd and the rest of her beach friends. However not everything goes according to her plan and Christy soon finds tension between her and all of her new friends. After all of the tension is worked through, Christy finds out on New Year's exactly what it means to be someone's forever.
Review: Yours Forever has been my favorite since the time I first read this series at 15 and it still is my favorite one. Everything that happens is really relatable. This book is the most fun to read for myself. What happens at New Year's is probably my favorite Todd-and-Christy moment. I really don't have much to say other than this is my favorite and I love it and I am so thankful for it.
This is an incredible set of books. Because I read them all in a set they all meld into one book in my mind. As inspiring Christian fiction this would be at the top of my list, just under Erynn Mangum's books. Let's just say that I learned some much needed lessons from a these books. Despite the fact that the main character Christy is 15 years-old I could still relate to the issues she struggled with. The lessons she learned were very good, and there was a lot of Bible content involved in Christy's growth. I also really enjoyed the analogies Robin Jones Gunn came up with to describe hard to grasp aspects of salvation. These analogies were so clear and applicable that I will probably use them in the future. Just a side note, the character Todd is a great guy. Honestly, he is the character I like the most, and he is a wonderful Christian example.
The only critique I have with these books has to do with Christy. Now most of her problems are quite relatable in the normal sense I'm sure, but her "romantic" struggles are a little ridiculous to me. Of course I am also a little old for these books, so that could have something to do with it. There really isn't anything that Christy does that is wrong, I just keep questioning why Christy is pretending to like this one guy when she obviously likes the other. Other than that, I completely recommend these books to any teenage girl, whether you are Christian or not. These books are moving and eyeopening.
Warning: There is quite a bit of secular/mature content in the first book especially (drugs, drinking, sex, pregnancy, death, eating disorders, sneaking out etc). Christy does not do most of these things, but she does help a few friends out during their hardships.
All I know is I wish I read these books when I was younger and didn't know where to find any clean books. These are VERY worth reading books. I give these three books that I have read so far a solid 4 stars. I completely recommend this series. I am totally hooked, and excitedly waiting to read the next book I can find.
If any Christian fiction series can be considered a classic, this is one of them. I’ve heard so many great things… from people who grew up reading these books!
That’s something I’d like to talk more about: You really CAN grow up reading these books. This main series starts when Christy moves to California as a 14-year-old girl and ends after her high school graduation. But there are spin-off series too, continuing the journey until she’s married with kids. If you time your reading right, you can be the same age as Christy along the way!
For now, I’ll share my thoughts on this original series. I was above the target-market age when I discovered it, so Christy felt a little immature at times. But I also realized… that’s not unrealistic. Teens make some pretty interesting decisions sometimes. That’s all part of stumbling and learning along the way.
Here’s the best part: Christy DOES learn along the way. Some of her life lessons and faith discussions have still stuck with me – which is a major reason I highly recommend this series. I also appreciate aspects of the gospel are included in these books, as certain characters learn about and accept salvation through Jesus.
As for the characters, Christy’s beach friends are the best... but Todd is my favorite, of course! And I HAVE to mention my favorite book: Island Dreamer (which is in volume 2). It's set in Hawaii and has single-handedly fueled my desire to visit Hana Road’s beautiful waterfalls.
*Content to note* Heavy topics are discussed in various books throughout the series, such as drug use, teen pregnancy, eating disorders, etc. (These are all addressed from a Christian perspective, adding to the theme of life lessons and growth).
Christy Miller, by Robin Jones Gunn, is an incredible book, and definitly on my favorites list. Christy, the main character, goes through many series of events, just as any other teenage girl does. she has insecurties, secrets, and flaws just like all the other teenage girls out there. To me, she seems like a real person. Christy first starts out by being in California with her aunt and uncle for the summer. Her aunt transforms her into a popular, stylish girl by taking her shopping and giard o reading her a makeover. she meets new friends and she becomes a Christian by hanging out with them. She even strikes a little romance with the beach blonde, surfer Todd. He is the perfect guy, except for Christy has a hard time deciding how to read him, she says its like a rollercoaster trying to figure him out. She moves to Califoria with her family from Wisconson. She meets new friends and starts a new life at Kelly High. She gets in a little trouble, but God always pulls her through, she is learning..i would recommend the book to anyone, but probably a girl!
this book is amazing... my friend recommended them and she gave them to me to borrow and now all my friends are reading them!!!!!! I am obsessed with them they continue to the Sierra Jenson series and the Katie Weldon!!!!! these are so good for a young Christian to read to become more involved with god!!
This is probably one of the best books that i have read. I have read a lot of books but this one is one of my favorites!! It is full of what teenagers actually go through at this age. I really love it!!!!!
Who would turn down a summer in sun kissed California with laidback Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob, while being spoiled to death? Christy certainly did not think twice about leaving Wisconsin, or what would become of her faith and personal growth. She simply thought nothing was going to change, after all it was just a vacation and she already knew what she believed in, God. With the help of her "God-lover" friends, she learns what it truly means to be a Christian and accepts Christ into her heart. After her dream Summer started coming to an end, Christy learns her family is moving to California, and it was going to be an hour and a half away from all her new friends. However, Christy now knows she can hand over all her troubles to Christ and she would again return to Newport next summer, where everything all started. Those who are interested in Christian books would enjoy this series, also people who like a little bit of romance in the mix of a story.
Summer Promise ~ 4.5 stars A Whisper and a Wish ~ 3.5 stars Yours Forever ~ 5 stars 𓂃 ོ⋆☀︎𓂃⛱ okay, these books are really cute! As a whole, I'd probably give the first volume 4.5 stars...? Christy got on my nerves in the first two books, but the ending of the third one made up for it (*melts* it was really adorable...) But I really love these books, and I can't wait to continue this series!! <33
I tried. I tried so stinkin' hard to like this book, but I could. not. stand it. I put it down at least five times because I got so frustrated with the characters. I'd heard such great reviews that I made myself keep reading, trying to give it a chance, hoping it would get better. I did manage to finish the first book. Just barely. And I skipped several parts because I got so annoyed with Christy. I about ripped my hair out (sometimes I mean that in a good way but, no, this was not a good way). Chrissy is so immature and whiney. I didn't like any of the characters (mayyyybe Uncle Bob). I didn't even like Todd! One of the things I hated was that she just 'fell in love', over the top, head-over-heels for Todd almost immediately. It drove me crazy. The whole book ... GAH! I'm not one for negative reviews. There are many out there who enjoy this book, and I'm glad. I sincerely hope this series is about Chrissy growing up, but she didn't earn my love to make me stick with her through her bad spots. I'd still give it a shot though. You never know. Everyone is different, and a lot of people loved this book. Maybe something is wrong with me, but I just couldn't stand it. I will not be reading the other books.
This is the best book i have read in a really long time! It really taught me alot about life. It taught me to open your heart up to God and let him in, and no matter the wrong you may do, He will always give you a second chance. In these three books, they taught me alot. Not only being an "awesome" romance book, it gave me a great decsription on what God can do for you, for example, He is always with you wherever you go, and though it may not feel like it, he knows you are talking to him and knows what the future holds for you. if you make a bad decession, He will forgive you and give you a second chance, like with Abraham in the bible, who lied about his wife and said that she was his sister so that the king would spare his life and take her instead, God forgave him and gave him a second chance. I really think this is a good book, and no matter what you like, you should really read it!
I started reading them when a friend recommended them to me, and I fell head-over-heels in love with them.
What I really like is that Christy is real and relatable. She's whiny, jealous, and in a way self-absorbed, but she's also compassionate, kind, and sweet. She struggles with things that pretty much every teenager has problems with. She struggles with her relationship with God, and makes us realize it's OK to go through that once in a while.
Speaking of relationships with God, hers comes naturally. It doesn't just happen. We see her grow and mature in a way that's natural, not hearing it for the first time and then 'BOOM' she's a Christian now. We get some lead up, which is one thing I really like.
If you are a Christian teen, I recommend that you find a more wholesome plotline for spiritual growth
Topics this book discusses: drugs, underage drinking, premarital you know, and other party-like activities.
The girl goes from wearing skirts (mentioned once in the beginning) with waist length hair to being obsessed with her figure, clothes and makeup, as a very appearance based person.... She is (arrested?) caught by the police for possession of a friend stolen prescription drugs and breaking curfew, too.
I find it hard to relate to the girl, if anything, I pity her. No child should feel it necessary to waste $700+ on clothes just because they are a wee bit upset.
I had been interested in reading about praying for your future husband, not this book of the series, I'm afraid.
