The Zero Hour saga continues, as the leader of a group of survivors comes to terms with their new-found freedom and faces harsh decisions about their future, as well as dealing with those among the group who may pose a threat to their survival.
Zero Hour Part 4: Survivors by Eamon Ambrose is a futuristic, dystopian short story which starts where Part 3 stopped. It is action-packed and a crazy post-apocalyptic world. I gave it five stars.
"Halfway there, I realize I'm too late. Murphy looks up, frozen in terror, and covers his head with his arms hopelessly to shield himself as a huge Nemesis drone the size of a car falls from the sky, crushing him. The sound he makes as it hits him will never leave me. I can't even describe it. Never in all the years of fighting have I seen someone die like this."
The survivors think that Captain Sarah Ford was killed in action. The unnamed narrator is disrespected by Davis who has a few supporters. At a meeting, the narrator finally decks Davis with one solid punch. His cronies pick up his limp body and drag him outside. Then they steal the truck with all the supplies and disable the other truck. The group had just voted unanimously to kill Davis when he and the others escaped.
In the fourth installment, Ambrose shifts the narrative, giving us insight into the minds of the survivors who are left dealing with the aftershock of their brief victory against a madman. We are introduced to a new protagonist: a battle-hardened soldier forced to make unspeakable choices in the face of mankind’s near-certain extinction. And just when there’s a glimmer of hope, things somehow go from bad to worse.
Ambrose paints his post-apocalyptic world in gritty, adrenaline-fueled strokes that are equal parts suspenseful and terrifying. The story is riveting from start to finish, the characters well developed. The Zero Hour universe has expanded, and as a fan of this series from the beginning, this is a very, very good thing.
Eamon, you did it again -> left us waiting & wondering WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Can we add a Greatreads feature to Goodreads? Anyone?
An epic story like this is a prime example of the excellent short stories being written by indie writers in the last few years. Good old fashioned dystopian literature in episodes, which has been written fresh 'n' fast, making sure WE the readers stay on the edge of our seats.
Here we shift perspectives, and this short is told from the perspective of Alex, a leader of a small group of survivors who are faced with near certain extinction. I am amazed at how awesome and intense these books are for me, and how well Ambrose seems to put it all together so effortlessly.
Some people have their TV shows: Walking Dead, Games of Thrones, Better Call Saul. I have this — Zero Hour. Every time I see the "Acknowledgments" I'm already anticipating the next installment. Which is to say, ZH is probably my favorite Sci-Fi series of all time. Definitely my favorite Short of all time. If you've read my reviews of parts 1-3, you'll know why.
Each episode is chock with hair-raising action, otherworldly beauty, and sudden twists. And the characters. Oh, these characters! They are so well written. Some ominous. Some noble. Some even quirky, as of something you'd see in Ridley Scott's latest Sci-Fi venture. But all are unique in their own way. Achieving this is no easy task for an author which, to me, exhibits the practiced, unparalleled talent of someone who truly loves their craft.
"Survivors" is no exception.
Here the story takes yet another clever turn, by advancing the plot from a new perspective. I won't say what perspective. But I will say, "Conflict leads to action. Action leads to desperation...and the hunt is on!"
Once more Ambrose zaps us with his prod of unceasing thrills 'n' spills, companionship and survival; not discounting his usual tidbits of humor (which always make me smile). As with previous episodes, he struck the perfect balance again with ZH4. You're left wanting more of one scenario when the wheels handbrake into a new, yet equally satisfying, direction. Every paragraph carries you like an escalator towards, what you know, is going to be a blinding climax. You're just along for the ride.
So strap yourself in...
Zero Hour is not only for the Sci-Fi enthusiasts but for anyone who enjoys a great tale. For the price, you just can't go wrong.
I'm really enjoying Zero Hour. But, darn it, now I've got to wait for the next installment. In this story we get to look at some of the other survivors and what happens after Ford makes her initial move, everyone in this story assumes the worst KIA. Find out what happened. Luckily Eamon Ambrose has promised that the next/final story will be out soon, so yeah, fingers crossed.
I purchased all 5 kindle books at the same time and just finished the first book. I suppose the fact that I want to start book two right away is a very good sign. I'm going on vacation next month and wanted to wait till then to finish the series. I don't thunk that will happen. Looking forward to finishing the series and other books from this author.
