I was provided a copy of this book for free in exchange for promotion and for my honest review. This exchange did not sway my opinion in any way.
I'm a novice to the sci-fi world and I usually leave those books to my husband, but when I saw this book I had to read it. The description drew me in and I couldn't stop thinking about it. The book was an incredible journey from the beginning to the end. The book is written from the perspective of multiple POVs and it jumps from different places and time periods. This writing style allows the reader to become very acquainted with all of the main characters and to know their motives and their drives on a more personal level. The book's time shifts also allows the reader to know the whole story and thus the plot is very well explained. I also found the book to be a very easy and engaging read.
The only thing that I would think would be off-putting to some is the pacing and the multiple POVs. The pacing of the book is pretty fast and having multiple POVs is sometimes confusing. Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of the pacing and the numerous POVs, but I feel that the writing style worked for this type of book. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read the next books in this series! This is the author's debut feature length novel and I foresee many great works from him in the future. Happy reading!
One sentence. That's all it took for me to realize that this book is going to be one headache-inducing snorefest. The plot sounded great. But the writing is atrocious. I'm not a book snob. I can overlook mistakes when reading a book. But whoever edited this story should be ashamed of his or herself for allowing this book to be released in this condition. As for the writer, anyone with a grammar school education should know better than to construct sentences where the character's response is given before the action happens. Worse, when you have to re-read every other sentence more than once to make sense of what's going on, there's little hope that the plot or characterization is any better. And I saw no indication that they are. Rather than slog my way through this one, I'm calling it quits early. What a waste of good cover art.
I really enjoyed this book, it was well-written with interesting characters and world. It had a great sci-fi element to it and I liked that we had alternative character sections in a chapter. I enjoyed that the aliens in the book felt like aliens but I could still relate to them, I loved Neight, and I also really liked Leesa, they were a few of the characters that I really related to and I felt bad for Allistair. I look forward to the next book and the war.
I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
This sounded like a brilliant story and on starting i was drawn in. But I ended up confused by the number of characters, none of which were fully developed. A good idea which left me feeling disappointed.
This is a fast-paced romp with twists and turns and surprises along the way. That's not all though! The author has taken a mix of super-powered humans, aliens, secretive military-like organizations, a vision of the future, magic and psychism and rolled it altogether to create a compelling story with compelling characters.
As a kid I used to read Marvel comics and these days I avoid the plethora of movies that have appeared in recent years about all of those super heroes but if somebody filmed this book. I'd watch it. It's written in a certain style that initially I wasn't sure I liked. I can't really describe it but here and there it simply seemed a bit direct, a bit strange. The thing is though is that as you continue to read and start to get sucked into the characters and the plot, this writing style grows on you and in the end it just fits.
Essentially the plot is that a young punk working a boring job turns out to have been continually on the run with his Mother since an alien landed on planet Earth and his father played a role in communicating with that alien. Why was he on the run? He has powers. He isn't the only one of course but his powers are unique. Not really knowing quite where he is going, he is persuaded to join The Andromeda Project - a shady, secretive, multi-government organization set up with a mission. Allister turns out to be the one who can pull off that mission despite all the ups and downs and twists that he experiences along the way. You kind of grow and learn with the character as the story unfolds. I don't wish to say more about the plot as I don't want to place too many spoilers here suffice to say, it is well thought through and an enjoyable ride....
The story involves so many different aspects and yet the author pulls it off well. It is a story of a young man finding his role in life, a story of the future and alien visitation, a story about a search for some hidden 'objects', a spy novel with double agents and danger, a story about super powered humans and an exploration of psychic talents and magical skills - all rolled into one.
I am happy to give it 5-stars as I enjoyed the book and as others have said - this should be made into a movie.....
Usually, I make it a point to make a summary of the story in my own understanding and own words. For this book, I can't seem to come up with one that would be good and comprehensive enough. I fear, if I try, I might just confuse the other readers. Or maybe, it was more on the fact that a lot of things happened in this book and I just don't know if I would be able to summarize it without spoiling. So, I am skipping a rendition of my own synopsis on this one and it has more to do with my inability to come up with a suitable one. I admit I am an imbecile this time.
I am not really fond of sci-fi. I can't remember why I downloaded this book from Kindle. Probably, because the plot was curious enough and it was free. There were chapters I enjoyed in this book. There were also parts where I wanted to put it down and just do something else. In fact, I did stop reading and started another book. I guess, overall, the book did not capture my fancy or stir a lot of emotions or reactions from me. It was fun but I also felt glad that I was done reading it. In some way, it felt like I was forced to finish it. Until now, I am not really sure if I liked it as a whole and if I wanted to read the next one. This book is just not for me and it felt too good to be true. Yes, this being fiction is not lost on me. But I think I would like to watch the movie if this turned into one. I felt this would be better done in the big screen with all the special effects and fight scenes.
I apologize to Jason for being so unclear and undecided about the book. It was just not for me. I give it two stars.
