Sophie Biddle, an heiress on the run with a child in tow, considers herself abandoned by her family and God. Wary, self-reliant Sophie is caught off guard when meeting a kind, but meddling and handsome minister at the local mercantile.

In 1900, Reverend Ian McCormick is determined to start anew in Stone Creek, Michigan, believing he has failed God and his former flock. He works harder than ever to forget his mistake, hoping to prove himself a most pleasing servant to his new congregation and once again to God.

While Sophie seeks acceptance for the child and a measure of respect for herself, the rumors swirl about her sordid past. Should Ian show concern for Sophie plight, he could risk everything - including his position as pastor of Stone Creek.

Now the pair must choose to trust God and forgive those who slander and gossip, or run. Will the scandals of their pasts bind them together forever, or drive both deeper into despair?

Kathleen Rouser's Rumors and Promises has earned a cherished place in my personal library as a literary treasure! If you're in pursuit of a novel that effortlessly intertwines a heartfelt love narrative with a robust and authentic Christian faith foundation, your journey finds its fulfillment in this book!

It gracefully captures the essence of a nostalgic love story with profound depth, intricately woven with an unwavering commitment to the Christian faith. From the initial page to the closing chapter, I found myself wholly captivated by the lives of the lovable characters, especially Sophie and Ian.

This novel surpasses being a mere love story between two individuals; it transcends the pages to become a testament to the divine love story between God and His children. Sophie's journey, marked by resilience and dignity despite past wounds, resonates as a beautiful reflection of the transformative power of faith. Reverend Ian McCormick, exemplifying solid, genuine faith and compassion, adds a layer of depth to the narrative that is truly inspiring.

Among the many strengths of Rouser's writing is her ability to convey a subtle yet impactful message about turning to the Almighty with our concerns, submitting all to Him. The narrative weaves a tapestry of God's promises, guiding the characters through the challenges of their pasts and the uncertainties of the future. The delicate interplay of determination, faith, love, hurt, rejection, and ultimate healing is masterfully handled, making "Rumors and Promises" a powerful and moving experience.

The characters are crafted with such authenticity that readers can't help but be drawn into their lives. The community and church dynamics, intricately intertwined with the characters' personal struggles, create a fantastically rich backdrop that adds layers of complexity to the narrative.

Rouser's debut novel showcases not only her literary expertise but also her ability to deliver a wholesome, Christian-faith-filled tale complete with traditional hymns and God’s Word.

The narrative beautifully explores themes of love, trust, and forgiveness as Sophie's life intersects with Reverend Ian McCormick's. The writing invites readers to immerse themselves in the town's atmosphere, growing into an emotionally charged journey resonating with depth and authenticity.

Rumors and Promises is more than just a romance; it's a beautiful, faith-filled journey. The colorful cast of characters, well-drawn and distinct, adds texture to the narrative, introducing conflicts that keep the reader engaged until the gripping climax and the satisfying finish.

In a literary landscape where true Christian fiction and wholesome novels are treasured, Kathleen Rouser's Rumors and Promises stands out as a beacon of excellence.

Rumors and Promises, Kathleen Rouser's debut novel, was a sensational true to life read. Ms Rouser is a gifted and talented author.

I was drawn into the lives of the characters Sophie Biddle and Reverend Ian McCormick from the very beginning. Sophie and Ian both have secrets from their past. Will they be able to overcome them or will the attitude of certain members in the community and church ruin their chance of being together?

Kathleen has created a beautiful historical romance story with characters that readers will love and others they will want to tell them to show their Christian charity to each and everyone. The story is interwoven with God's promises for the characters to move forward in their lives. Rumors and Promises is filled with determination, faith, love, hurt, rejection, healing and God's powerful love and mercy to each one.

Purchase your own copy of Rumors and Promises to read this fantastic and powerful love story between Sophie and Ian and their Heavenly Father. I look forward to reading more of Kathleen Rouser's novels. Her writing is inspirational and wholesome, that I really appreciate in a novel.

I finished Kathleen Rouser's Rumors and Promises with a sigh of delight over this nostalgic love story. Not only is it a love story between Sophie, a woman who learns how to hold her head up in dignity despite a great harm done to her, and Ian, a Reverend who suffers when he believes he's allowed another to suffer, but it's also the love story between God and His children. And that's my type of excellent read! I appreciate Ms. Rouser's subtle but lovely message that we all need to take our concerns to the One who can help. And oh, that hero--Ian--is a keeper!!

Sophie Biddle has changed her name and is traveling with a young child. Why is she fleeing her hometown? She meets Reverend Ian McCormick and her life changes. This is a story of finding love, trust and forgiveness. The author gives depth to the characters and makes the reader feel as if they were right there in the town with the people. I enjoyed this story.

Sophie Biddle has few expectations when she arrives in Stone Creek. She and 2-year-old Caira need a place to live and an income. Taking the job at a boarding house will fit both needs. Shelter, food, and enough money to purchase material to replace their worn-out clothing is the best she can hope for. Meeting handsome Ian McCormick isn't in her plans. With the secret she must protect, there is no place in her life for a man. Especially not a man of the cloth.

Charming story set in turn-of-the-20th century Michigan, my home state. Sophie's tragic circumstances will tug at your heart. There's an encouraging message of forgiveness, both human and divine. The element of adult content (which all happens "off camera" as they say and very delicately handled) makes this a better choice for readers age 15 and above.

Kathleen Rouser Sophia Bidershem, a teen-aged heiress in late nineteeth century Detroit, was taken advantage of by a predatory older man and bore a daughter outside of marriage. To avoid a forced marriage, she runs away with the Daughter, Caira, always fearing her predator might find them. Taking the name Sophie Biddle and pretending that the now-two-year-old Caira is her sister, she arrives destitute in Stone Creek, Michigan, to take a job in a boarding house and start a new life. Her pleasant personality, competence, and obvious love for Caira quickly win her friends, but she feels guilty for lying about her status, and she lives in fear of being found by the girl’s ruthless father.
The young minister Ian McCormick provides Sophie charitable help and is instantly attracted to her. But Ian has hidden secrets of his own, secrets that leave him as guilt-ridden as Sophie. He tries unsuccessfully to assuage his guilt feelings through good works. Sophie’s presence and their growing attraction to each other only complicate his situation.
Kathleen Rouse threads this story skillfully from that point, surrounding her protagonists with a colorful group of well-drawn secondary characters, introducing new conflicts, and building to a thrilling climax and satisfying denouement, all the while weaving in the spiritual dimensions of her characters. The result is an always-interesting, well-written romance that will keep readers turning the pages.

I recently had the pleasure of reading Kathleen Rouser's new book, Rumors and Promises. I was swept up in the tale of young Sophie Biddle and her daughter as she's thrown into a world of having to provide for herself instead of living in the lap of luxury, like she was raised.

A meddling minister, Ian McCormick and his sister, are determined to help Sophie. He's dogged by his past failures and wants to assist however he can, without drudging up his past mistakes.

Sophie passes her daughter off as a younger sister, but her conscience is pricked by the lie. Trying to avoid rumors and speculations of her sordid past, will she ever be able to find love and acceptance and a promise of tomorrow?

Kathleen Rouser has a wonderful way of describing things and pulling the reader into her story. Her dialogue, setting descriptions, and historical accuracy makes her an author I'll be reading in the future.

In the late 19th century era book, Rumors and Promises, Sophie Biddle is on the run. Set in a time frame where society judges a woman who conceives a child out of wedlock regardless of the circumstances, Sophie determines to make a better life for the child she chooses to keep even though she sees her life as ruined. Yet Ian McCormick, a pastor of a small town church who has his own secrets is determined to protect the newcomer. Kathleen Rouser handles what in our day is still a touchy topic with delicacy and grace. She does a great job of capturing the fear of any wounded woman: the memories, the struggle of seeing her abuser in every male face, the hurdle obstructing her need to ever trust again. Whenever I had to put the book down, my mind tried to guess what would happen next; sometimes I was right, most of the times I was wrong! That's the sign of a good book!

This is very much a character-driven story of belonging and forgiveness. Sophie and Ian
are endearing and instantly relatable. Kathleen Rouser brings the reader on a journey into a realistic and quaint small town with all its charms and a few difficult personalities. The sense of community Ian wants to establish and Sophie desires to be a part of is not easily obtained by either, yet the message of hope and acceptance is steadfast through all the ups and downs these two characters face.

I enjoyed the way the secondary characters have prominent roles and vibrant personalities. Whether it was Ian's sister, Maggie, or Sophie's little one, Caira, the supporting cast helped to reveal another side of the main characters. They also were important to the story progression and enhanced the overall feel of community Sophie longed for.

Kathleen presented the story with a necessary delicate approach, handling topics of deception, abuse, and isolation with care. The themes of forgiveness and God's grace were clearly communicated in a way that made my heart happy for the journey these characters took. Most important, to me, was the message of faith being useless without action -- that we are to live out what we claim in our hearts and share the message of grace through our actions.

Thank you to the author/publisher for a complimentary review ecopy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Historical novels with pastoral heroes have always intrigued me and Reverend Ian McCormick made an excellent one. This inspirational romance featured him taking newcomer Sophie Biddle and her toddler under his care when they first arrived in Stone Creek, Michigan. I read with great interest to see how their relationship would develop amidst the keeping of secrets. Naturally integrated into the story were spiritually uplifting themes of God’s grace, forgiveness and redemption. Sophie’s plight and how she came back from scorn and adversity were so admirable and beautifully written. Ian faced a difficult task as church pastor in dealing with mean-spirited gossips.
Watching Ian and Sophie work through their difficulties made for a very engrossing read. There were so many wonderful secondary characters to admire, including Ian’s sister Maggie, Nora, and some of the folks at the boardinghouse. This book kept me turning pages, rooting for the characters and feeling inspired by the faith themes. Looking forward to reading more from this author!

I love stumbling upon new authors!! Especially ones as talented as Kathleen Rouser and her debut novel, Rumors and Promises. Seriously, this book is ADORABLE! It is filled with quirky characters, frigid winters, and enough action and drama to fill your head with angst and sighs all around.

Months after Sophie Biddle is accosted by a scoundrel, she takes her child on the run to escape that wretched man, the town gossip, and her own disappointed and unforgiving family. When Sophie lands a job working for a kindhearted woman at a boardinghouse, it seems like a God-send…that is, assuming God actually cared a wit about her. As Sophie and her daughter acclimated themselves to the new town under the pretense that her daughter is actually her younger sister, the rumors begin to fly as the local gossips speculate who Sophie truly is. It doesn’t help matters when the new minister, Reverend Ian McCormick takes a special interest in her either! With her heart on the line, Sophie teeters between the many lies she’s told and the hidden truth. Will she ever be able to stop running?

I really enjoyed reading Rumors and Promises. It was such a sweet story and I can’t wait to see what Kathleen Rouser writes next!

I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a fair review. This is a debut novel for Kathleen Rouser. I have to admit I now have another favorite author and I look forward to more great reads from her!

This novel is set in the early 1900's when women led restricted lives and outcasted if they had a child out of wedlock. Sophie Biddle arrives in Stone Creek, Michigan with her "sister" and is offered help by the handsome Reverend Ian McCormick. She is hesitant because she does not want to be recognized. She is on the run from her family and an evil man. Sophie and Ian both have past secrets that could threaten their peaceful lives in Stone Creek. They do both feel a connection to each other but both are afraid of losing everything. As bond becomes stronger, the naysayers of the community and Sophie's past catch up to them. Is their Faith in God and their strength and conviction to choose the right paths enough to keep them together? Or will it tear them apart and destroy their lives?

This book has so many facets and makes you really think about how important Faith in God is as well as standing up to do the right thing is. It is both captivating and intriguing as well as romantic. I felt such a connection to the characters and the way it is written, you just want to keep reading. I literally read it in one day! I highly recommend this book!!

It’s 1900 and a young Detroit heiress, Sophia Bidershem, shows up in Stone Creek, Michigan with a two-year old child she is passing off as her sister, Caira. But Sophie’s run away from her affluent family and now destitute and has taken the name of Sophie Biddle. The child is the result of an attack Sophie suffered from a former suitor her affluent parents wanted her to wed.
Sophie has created this ruse because this is an era when children born out of wedlock are a stigma for the child as well as the mother. Sophie doesn’t want little Caira tainted in any way because of the actions of Sophie’s abuser. She gains employment in a boarding house to begin life anew.
The local minister has his own secrets that haunt him and he immediately is supportive of the lovely young woman and her sister who have obviously fallen on rough times.
There are plenty of colorful characters in this well-paced story. Kathleen Rouser has woven a sweet tale of forgiveness and redemption with a few twists and turns to keep the reader wondering. Ms. Rouser has handled a difficult subject with grace but has also demonstrated the scars that last from such an attack.
Readers will enjoy discovering how through faith and love the characters work through their difficult issues and broken relationships.

Yearning for safety, acceptance, and permanence, Sophie Biddle and her daughter Caira move to Stone Creek, Michigan to work in a boardinghouse. In order to keep her true identity hidden, and to be accepted into the community of the small town in 1900,Sophie introduces Caira as her sister, both having been orphaned.

As Sophie works hard at the boardinghouse, she is endeared by the owner, and the local (single) pastor and his sister. As these relationships develop, she is slowly able to trust God again, and accept that she is a worthy and honorable person, despite rumors to the contrary.

Reverend Ian McCormick must forgive himself and accept God's forgiveness for a mistake he made in the past. Only then would he be able to allow himself to consider entering into a romantic relationship.

The author portrayed Sophie in a way that made me want to cheer for her when things finally went her way. That said, she faced some heavy opposition from influential townspeople, which made for an interesting and believable read.

Fans of historical fiction and romance will want to lose themselves in this book!

Loneliness and regret create a heavy shroud, too heavy for a lovely single mother to bear. Determined to create a new life for herself and her young daughter, "Sophie Biddle" recreates herself in Stone Creek, Michigan, answering an advertisement for a housekeeping assistant, dreaming of owning her own sewing business one day. After meeting the town's kind, handsome minister and his widowed sister, Sophie's musical talents once again become a salve to her soul, but they also open a window to her past that she is terrified will eventually illuminate her secrets.

Reverend Ian MCormick is intrigued by his potential new parishioner and her young sister, offering them assistance in any way that he can. Her beautiful eyes speak of sadness, and her heart, he learns quite by accident, holds deep sorrow. Shielding her the best that he can from the town's malicious gossipers, Ian struggles to keep his feelings at bay, while at the time praying for a way to scale Sophie's defenses.

It's going to take a miracle for this story to have a happy ending, but Ian and Sophie love a God who can "make all things new".

Sophie was on the run with her daughter, Caira. Having a child out of wedlock forces her to assume the role of big sister to her daughter to preserve her child's reputation. Sophie is running from it all. She hopes to start fresh in Stone Creek.

Reverend Ian is also starting over after a tragic mistake. When the two meet there is an instant connection but both resist because they can't let go of the pasts that haunt them. Along the way we meet some wonderful secondary characters in the book. Esther, the owner of the boardinghouse where Sophie works, brought a smile to my face often. There were also a few characters ( Gertrude) that I would have happily thrown my shoe at.

Can Sophie and Ian let go of their pasts and let God heal and restore them? Will rumors and busybodies who need shoes thrown at them prevail? Pick up a copy of Rumors and Promises and find out! I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I did receive a copy in exchange for a review, but I also ended up purchasing two for some book loving friends of mine. So pick up your copy as well and enjoy a great read! Happy Reading!

Rumors and Promises by Kathleen Rouser is an uplifting story featuring a young, single mother trying to establish a life for her tiny daughter and herself amidst discrimination at every turn. As the book unfolds, despair turns to hope through plot twists and faithfully loving characters.

Being a mother of a toddler myself, I identified with the heroine immediately and was swept into her plight. Rouser did an wonderful job at fleshing out her characters and bringing their stories to life. The plot was ever changing, keeping me turning page after page. I easily fell into Rouser's story and enjoyed her storytelling ability.

**Spoilers**

Just finished this novel and I really enjoyed it! I love a good christian historical fiction book. I always learn things when reading them and I've decided even though they aren't real life stories, I seem to always get a lesson for real life.

This one as it is titled rumors and promises is very fitting. It is about a girl who was forced to lose her purity and in that day it was basically the worst thing that could happen to you short of being homeless and poor. She got pregnant and her parents, trying to save their reputation and tried to make her give up the child. So she decided to run away to a small town, change her name and start over. Instead of being shunned here she decided lie and tell people her daughter was her sister, but rumors started to form about it being her daughter. She was tired of running and just wanted to make a life for her innocent little one. She met a reverend who showed her God's unconditional love no matter how it made him look and treated her with respect. Slowly she started to see that God's promises to keep safe watch over her and that He had a plan for her life all along. Giving her a sweet daughter always pushing her to better herself and meeting the reverend whom she later marries. Even though she feels she isn't good enough for him God continually pushes her to forgive herself and prove that we are all sinners just the same no matter how big or small your blemish. Ian (the Reverend) later confesses to her how he ignored a young lady who was with child in a bad circumstance and she ended up committing suicide. Although tragic, I like how she shows you how all people are burdened by something from their past. Everyone falls short of perfection, this being the reason we ALL need Jesus, even a reverend. Also that it is so easy to tell someone that God has forgiven them for their shortcomings but that actually doing that is much harder.

I also liked that sometimes you can't see God's plan for your life. She was poor as dirt, a child to take care of and had no where to go. You wonder where is God in that? Later you see he had a plan all along but that doesn't mean it won't be tough at times. You should definitely take the time to read this one!!

Sophie intrigued me right away because I just knew she was keeping a huge secret. Traveling alone with a child is a big red flag for me. I kinda figured out a little about the child but I knew there was more to the story. I admired Sophie for taking a job that didn’t pay much but she worked hard and was appreciative for the people in the town who welcomed her.

The early 1900s were hard for everyone ,but as a young woman alone raising a child it was more difficult. Of course the town had their gossip group who loved to be judgmental instead of being filled with grace and reach out to her. Sophie will have to learn to trust God and remember that He loves her as trials come her way.

One of Sophie’s secrets is a sensitive subject that may trigger some readers. It has become impossible for Sophie to feel completely safe until her past is exposed and she receives God’s healing. Her self esteem at times is very low and therefore her trust is almost non existent. Perhaps the Reverend McCormick can help her.

I did like Ian right away and thought his character was humble, kind and filled with grace. He does try to get to know Sophie better, but there is a barrier that Sophie has put up. As Sophie decides to play the piano at church, she starts to let her heart open up very slowly. Ian is very encouraging and genuinely wants to help her overcome whatever is bothering her. He has such a pastor’s heart and you can feel his gentle spirit. I really liked this character and how he makes everyone feel loved and accepted.

When Gertrude made her entrance into the story, I was displeased . She is a mean spirited judgmental and unhappy woman. Why does it bother her so much that Sophie is now playing the piano at church? Her harsh words of Sophie “parading around in an evening gown at church and their questionable upbringing,” made me instantly remember how God loved even the lost or those who had sinned.

I loved how the author illustrates redemption and reminds us that we all have a past. The good news is that God forgives us and we have been set free. I loved getting to watch Sophie mature in her faith and begin to feel confident in herself.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Sophie is a woman on the run with her young daughter. She has been pretty much abandoned by her family and she really has no one else to turn to, except herself. This burden she carries is a lot for her to carry on her young shoulders and she has been running for a while trying to find solace somewhere. If not for her, at least for her little girl whom she pretends is her sister.

Ian is a minister who is happy for a new start in Stone Creek. He and his widowed sister and his nephew are all trying to move on with their lives. Ian has some dark memories from his time at the last church and he certainly doesn't want the past to repeat itself when he meets Sophie and her little sister. There is something about Sophie that is haunting her, and he feels very protective towards her. If only she will open up and trust him.

Trust is hard for Sophie when everyone blames her for the attack that left her in this predicament. She is a wounded woman battered in life and in her spirit. Can she open up to Ian and trust another man? Can she trust that all men are not alike? Is she able to forgive those who should have protected her?

This was a beautiful story of a young woman learning to trust again and a man willing to let her take her time. There were lessons to be learned on busybodies spreading rumors and a town that needed to learn to not judge too quickly, or maybe not judge at all. There was also a thread of danger that determined to stalk the loving couple as well.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Taking us back to the early 1900s, Kathleen brings us face to face with the social issues of the times. One problem that our heroine faces is shown clearly. Families wanted their daughters to marry well. Money and social status superseded happiness and God’s will.

Sophie and Caira arrive in Stone Creek, running away from that scenario.

Since I live in a small town I understood the small town rumours that made Sophie’s struggle all the harder. Hurts run deep in both the main characters, Sophie and Rev. McCormick. As in our lives the ability to learn to trust God and people and to forgive them takes time. Two steps forward and one back.

I enjoyed the story but I did find it slow sometimes. But as in life it takes time to work through our problems. I am a “fixer” so I wanted the characters to figure this out quicker. I kept reading and learned that the characters did indeed need time to truly heal.

Even though rumours can be part of a small town, true friendships are also made. Sophie learns to embrace her friendships as they help her to accept their love and caring.

The story felt true to the life and the times, and with strong characters the reader bonds with them. We feel their frustrations and doubts. This books makes a very good read.
