How to Disappear

Rate this book
Vicky Decker has perfected the art of hiding in plain sight, quietly navigating the halls of her high school undetected except by her best (and only) friend, Jenna. But when Jenna moves away, Vicky’s isolation becomes unbearable.

So she decides to invent a social life by Photoshopping herself into other people’s pictures, posting them on Instagram under the screen name Vicurious. Instantly, she begins to get followers, so she adds herself to more photos from all over the world with all types of people. And as Vicurious’s online followers multiply, Vicky realizes she can make a whole life for herself without ever leaving her bedroom. But the more followers she finds online, the clearer it becomes that there are a lot of people out there who feel like her— #alone and #ignored in real life.

To help them, and herself, Vicky must find the courage to face her fear of being “seen,” because only then can she stop living vicariously and truly bring the magic of Vicurious to life.

In this beautiful and illuminating narrative, Sharon Huss Roat shines a light on our love of social media and how sometimes being the person you think you want to be isn’t as great as being the person you truly are.

i think this book is so important. this is the kind of book where you dont really focus on if its written well or wonder if it will one day be considered a masterpiece. this is the kind of story that you remember because it touches you personally. i wouldnt consider myself to have social anxiety, but i was able to relate to vicky very much. everyone has things that make them anxious, things that make them uncomfortable. and living in such an online driven society, its so easy to escape our real lives and disappear for awhile.

i think this book handles topics like anxiety, depression, isolation, friendship, relationships, and social media, in a very effective manner. i think students, parents, teachers, friends, and pretty much anyone, could benefit from reading a story like this. because chances are, there is someone exactly like vicky in their life, even if they dont know it.

so let me just take a moment to say, to anyone who may need to hear it, i care. i see you. i am here for you. you matter. you are not alone. <3

This is a 10 plus star rating for me. I was so incredibly moved by this beautifully written story. Young Vicky suffers from debilitating social anxiety.

The simple act of walking into a classroom or returning another student's greeting would send her into a deep, sweating panic or have her running to the bathroom to hide. So much of her young life was affected by her inability to control her anxiety. She is certainly not alone: so many people are unaware that this condition can be treated or helped, if they can bring themselves to reach out for professional/medical assistance. It appears that Vicky was not aware of or was unable to find the help she needed.

High school is tough, and Vicky's best friend, Jenna, is no longer around to shield her from direct interaction with the real and terrifying world she must face every day. One day, out of sheer frustration, Vicky creates an online persona - Vicurious - who photoshops herself into all kinds of daring adventures - all the things Vicky herself could never bring herself to even attempt. Over time, Vicurious's quirky, daring antics attract an avalanche of followers on Instagram.

There are a few episodes in the story that had me gasping with laughter, and just as many that brought me to sympathetic tears. Vicurious's growing popularity on Instagram comes with a price. Many lonely, sad followers reach out to Vicky through her persona. I watched this terrified young girl evolve behind the curtain of anonymity into a caring, involved human being who became an instrument for positive change. Meanwhile, Vicky becomes friends with a fellow student, Lipton Gregory, who also suffers from social anxiety, but who is already in therapy.

I like this story because Vicky's problems are not suddenly vanquished just because she meets and falls in love with a nice boy. Vicky will have to do her own work, but by his example and loyal friendship, she finally sees that there is help for her, and the promise of a "real" and fuller life, if she can just find the courage to take those necessary first steps.

I started reading this book yesterday evening, and grudgingly put the book down in the wee hours of the morning for a few hours of sleep so that I could get some work done the next day. I literally rushed back home to fall back into this book - the story had me so entranced. I learned a lot about panic attacks and/or social anxiety from reading this book, which is a surprise to me because I have close family members who are afflicted with severe anxiety and depression.

This is a memorable, heartwarming read - I was just so impressed with the excellent story-telling and characters. This is a "must read" for everyone - young and not so young! You will certainly not regret the hours you will have spent with the remarkable Vicky Decker! I'd follow Vicky/Vicurious too - if I had an Instagram account, that is!!!

(I received an advance copy of this book for free. Thanks to HarperCollins and Edelweiss.)

“I try to never cry about myself. If I cried about myself I’d be bawling all day, every day.”

This was a contemporary story about a girl with an undiagnosed social anxiety disorder, who became famous on Instagram.

I felt really sorry for Vicky in this story, and I could totally relate to her anxiety over social situations.

The storyline in this was about Vicky creating an Instagram account and posting photos of herself in other people’s photos, and generally doing things that she would never get a chance to do in real life like riding on a hippogriff. We also got a little bit of romance, and a bit of drama over a falling out with her best friend Jenna.

The ending to this was pretty good, and I was pleased with the way things turned out.

Every book with a message deserves more respect than a normal one and that is the case with "How to Disappear".
It rises frankly and quite abruptly one of the most important themes for teenagers (in fact not only for them...) the fear of living in real life and the perpetual hide into the virtual one.
There are some clichés and a serious dose of syrup, but that matters less. If young people do still read something else than their phone messages , that's one book to spend some useful hours together...

One of my top 5 YA books of 2017 and a mandatory read for parents, teachers and administrators, this story of social anxiety and the lure of social media to replace real life is frighteningly real.

I just want to first give a shoutout to a fellow school librarian Carli Sauer (@the_loudlibrarian on Instagram) for bringing this book to my attention pre-publication - I immediately pre-ordered it for my HS library after reading her READ THIS BOOK review of it, and then when it showed up on release day I completely inhaled the entire book that very evening.

HOW TO DISAPPEAR is a book about social anxiety, depression, friendship, dating and most of all, social media. The isolation of today's teens due to social media, and the ability to create an entirely new identity using it. Instagram is the focus of the book and Roat has written the world of likes, followers and obsessive fixation on it to an absolute T, with the female protagonist Vicky being an incredibly relatable character. I was nodding along with so much of the book and toward the end was reading with tears streaming down my face while I raced through the pages to discover the outcome.

The release of this book is perfectly timed for the beginning of a new school year and needs to be read by every adult in every teen's life. Parents, teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, administrators. Teens will love it and relate to it too, of course, but they are already well aware of the world Vicurious inhabits - not all adults are.

In addition, these two articles were published right before the book was released and I read them before I even read the book - they speak of the REAL issues that the book addresses and the timeliness of the text, and are also mandatory reads for adults working with and raising teens:

since i'm on a social media hiatus, reading this book made me feel relaxed (heh. i'm not suffering anymore).

i was panicking about something last night so i just picked it out on a whim to... escape. i finished it this morning. it's very fitting, i think. vicky, some other characters of this book, and i—we are all bunch of anxious weirdos. social media, no matter how cool we try to act by saying we don't care, is always there and often matters. we are teenagers and the 'attention technologies' and algorithms decide what we have to do. it's like we need constant validation from others, now more than ever before. i dont see myself in this book. social media is no longer a huge part of my life, highschool wasnt all that bad for me, and i'm too south asian to relate with them. but as a teenager in general, i do relate with them. losing friend is something that hit closer to home. this book did a good job at whatever it was trying to prove, i think. its an easy book to devour if you are in a slump. i enjoyed reading this book quite a lot actually. it makes me want to read more ya contemporaries with themes similar as this ones.

This year hasn't been so great for me when it comes to finding good books. I had no idea this would have been the one to give me some hope.

Vicky is feeling lonely since her only friend, the only one she ever needed, moved away and found a life of her own. Her social anxiety had never been a problem but now it becomes so apparent even her mother won't give her peace. That's when she creates Vicurious, another self who is able to go to places and do things Vicky could only dream with just a little photo editing skill and Instagram. Vicurious doesn't only change her life, but also that of more than a million of people who ends up following her account.

I'll be honest, I found it very cool how Vicurious was able to influence people, and that probably happens in social networks a lot. But I found that part of the story too... fantastic to really care. I couldn't really believe that could happen, thus I was rolling my eyes more than reading this.

Removing the fantastic, thought, we have this amazing story so verisimilar it hurt. I was never as awkward as Vicky but I know I've come close many times to doing the same things she ends up doing. Her every blooper was as funny as relatable. I would cheer for her at other times. And some I would just know what would happen because that was what would have happened to me.

Vicky's drama was real but the author knew how to dose, creating hilarious situations without losing sight on the seriousness of her predicament.

And Lipton! Oh my, what a cute boy! What a duo they made! I confess I wouldn't choose Lipton as my book boyfriend but only because I don't think he's my type. Because that's his only flaw in my opinion. He's just so lovely! I know most of the readers will fall head over heels at the first awkward moment. I'm not sure if I have mentioned but awkward moments are what made this book for me. I'll probably never forget Lipton's excuse to invite Vicky over. I literally laughed out loud at how wrong that sounded, and thus how cute Lipton was not aware of how that came out—read the book, and you'll know what scene this is.

This was a quick read, in spite of the book being a little on the long side. For you to have an idea, I'm about to start a read-a-thon, so I had to read it in two days and a half but I ended up reading in less than two. This is a really nice YA you'll end with a smile smile on your face as well as a lot of food for thought. If you're into cute couples in YA's, you'll like this.

A final note, I think this cover is a little too bland and serious for the plot, I would have gone with something more colorful. It took me a while to realize it's supposed to be an Instagram selfie.

Review based on an ARC provided by Edelweiss. I also want to thank the publisher for giving me this opportunity.

How To Disappear is a standalone Young Adult contemporary novel.

The narrator is high school sophomore Vicky Decker. The book is told in 1st person POV.

I really had no idea what to expect from this book. But I was very pleasantly surprised. This is my first book by this author. And I was very impressed.

Vicky has extreme social anxiety. At first I was a bit shocked that there could be teens with such severe anxiety. But as I continued reading I found Vicky's issues to be extremely fascinating. And I think that this book could make a difference so that people realize that they are not alone.

Vicky's one friend, her best friend Jenna moves away. Vicky's life then basically consists of stalking schoolmates social media accounts and texting with Jenna.

Vicky is extremely talented at photoshopping and what happens next is absolutely amazing.

There were so many things to love about this book. I adored Vicky's classmate Lipton. What a great character. I loved the yearbook and everything about that. I loved Vicky photoshopping herself into pictures on instagram.

Overall, this book was really good. I did not know what to expect. But I was pleasantly surprised. This book deals with significant issues (like social anxiety and people feeling depressed or alone). But it also has some romance. I would definitely recommend this book. It was a very enjoyable read!

Thanks to edelweiss and HarperTeen for allowing me to read this book.

Mi-a prins bine parcursul.

3.5 stars. A good arc!

In case you didn't read the blurb: Vicki has social anxiety and is always lonely. She ends up creating an Instagram account detailing her loneliness, @Vicurious, and discovers she might not be alone after all. Yes, it's a bit of a cheesy concept, but this book executed the premise very well.

The best thing about this book is that no characters are completely unsympathetic. Even characters who seem standoffish are developed and realistic, which I loved, and Vicki ends the book with a group of truly genuine friends.

Vicki's romantic storyline with Lipton doesn't overtake the book, and it builds quite genuinely. There are no declarations of love– this reads like a normal high school relationship, which I appreciated. Lipton is also a genuinely good guy, rather than being an asshole.

Honestly, my main complaint was that the text messages kept switching fonts and Vicki's font wasn't consistent. But that's just an editing issue, and I'm sure it will be fixed in the published version.

I'm not usually a lighthearted contemporary girl, but anyone who loves this genre should definitely pick this up!

Le va schimba perceptia despre tot ce-i înconjoară dacă au suficienta răbdare sa-si lase sufletul deschis.

This one really tugged at my heartstrings, while filling me with hope.

This book was such a wonderful surprise! I laughed, I cried, I swooned, but I also found myself relating to so many of the things Vicky did and felt. Roat did such an incredible job telling this tale, marrying social media and social anxiety to produce a pretty special coming-of-age type story.

Things I Liked

The positive use of social media: In my heart, I know there are a lot of pros to social media. It just seems as though all the negative uses are getting most of our attention. Therefore, I was elated to see Instagram used in such a positive and awesome way in this book. I hope people will read this, and be inspired to do some good via social media.

Vicky: I so easily related to Vicky. My anxiety is not quite as severe as her's, but I understood her. I was very proud of each step she took, because I understood how difficult it was for her to accomplish each task, which seem so mundane to most. Vicky was by no means cured over the course of this book, but she definitely experienced a lot of growth, and it was a beautiful thing to see.

Lipton❣️: Gosh! If you googled the term "sweet little cinnamon roll", you would find Lipton referenced somewhere in the entry. This boy was so sweet, adorable, and genuine. I loved his persistence when "courting" Vicky, and also found him to have a big beautiful heart. I melted multiple times due to him, and commend Roat on crafting such an amazing book boyfriend.

Vicky's Tribe: It was so difficult watching Vicky struggle with her isolation and loneliness. Therefore, I was so delighted when she finally found her tribe, or maybe they found her. Either way, she ended up with a great circle of friends, who were super supportive and really saw her. They didn't just see her though, they liked what they saw.

I only have praise for this lovely story of a girl, who while trying to escape herself, she finds herself.

**I would like to thank the publisher for the advanced copy of this book.

LA RECENSIONE COMPLETA QUI: https://thereadingslove.blogspot.it/2...

description

Vicky Decker is ME and it is nice to not feel so #alone in my random fears and anxieties ! This book is fantastic. As a person who suffers from social anxiety and a mother of teenage boys this book really spoke to me. I found myself talking to Vicky, when she was afraid or anixious. I nodded my head in agreement when she went over her Terror List and added things . I completely dove into her world and Sharon Huss Roat's writing skill allowed me to do so effortlessly. Thank you Sharon Huss Roat for writing a book about those of us that struggle to fit in and struggle to stop ourselves from struggling !

I loved this book! In fact, I finished it in under 24 hours. It's a compelling and heartfelt story about finding yourself in the age of social media. I had so much empathy for Vicky as she battled her anxieties and fears, and I was rooting for her every step of the way. Highly recommend you pick this one up!

I went in into the book expecting something, as I read it turned out to be something else and well it ended on a very different note.
The author definitely wanted to give out and talk about a very important issue .. somehow achieving that with this storyline didn't quite work. :(
I really wanted to like this book, given how much I was enjoying the first few chapters..
