When the small and broken man from the cafe run's into him by accident, it leads to a run-in that Josh is ashamed of the second he leaves.

Teddy is the small, broken cafe worker that accidentally runs into the big, brooding man with the cane. With an embarrassing and painful encounter between the two and an abusive uncle furthering said injury; its just the way things go in "The Life Of Teddy Valentine."
Feeling guilty for the way he snapped at the small guy; Josh decides to pay him another visit taking Carter with his as a buffer. One thing leads to another and the hits just keep on coming for Teddy. Will it be enough drama for Josh to throw in the towel or will Teddy end up finding his hero?

*This book does contain strong language and sexual situations between men* You're welcome ;)

Reread 2/28/2017 I love these stories by Jenny Wood that give us a new couple in each book but also allow us to see past heroes. Josh is so amazing!!

This is a pretty short read about Josh and Teddy. Teddy really needed someone to stand up for him at times. Josh gladly takes this job and in doing so builds Teddy's confidence along the way. I loved that we got more of Alvin and Carter as well and can't wait to read the other books in this series.

*** Here in book 2 of the Unlikely Hero series, *** we have two men who are both in need of some TLC. Josh is Alvin's Marine "brother" who is rehabbing with his prosthetic leg, burn scars and is lonely in life.
He's 26, Hispanic, tall and muscled,

and staying with Alvin and Carter.
Teddy is 23, is a short, small man

who has been abused his whole life, by family, and then thrown out at 13, when he went to live with is loving Gran.
But even with her, he's beaten and broken by his Uncle

who lives with Gran, too. Even with his heartbreaking childhood and beyond, Teddy has not given up hope for a hero, someone to find happiness with. When a customer knocks him down, he injures his wrist, and has a panic attack.

A handsome muscled man, Josh, helps him breathe through it. The large man terrifies him, just because of his size, because in his life, the big ones have always hurt him. The next day, Josh goes back to the shop with Carter to see if Teddy is okay, only to find him with a cut lip, cast, and bruises. Carter, Alvin and Josh invite Teddy to stay with them, to be safe. With the reality of his loving Gran's poor health, his Uncles drunk tirades, he says yes. Josh's feelings to protect Teddy are new to him, and he likes it.

Teddy feels safe for the first time in his life.

These two men find solace in each others arms.

I loved these men, their fierce love, and how they become so important to one another. This is beautifully written, in each man's POV, by Jenny Wood, who builds lovable, strong yet flawed characters and shows us how they overcome their problems to move forward.

The heartbreak of Teddy's past will bring you to tears, but at the end our tears will be happy ones. After Gran's bad stroke, she'll be in a Care Home. Her lawyer reveals all the measures Gran has taken to ensure Teddy is financially stable. The mean Uncle, and his horrible, hateful mother and stepdad cause trouble, but Teddy is no longer alone.

Teddy and Josh have shared stories, scars, and their hearts

to receive a bone deep connection, each needs desperately. They really are heroes to each other.
Highly recommended ! ENJOY !!

Nice to revisit a simple hurt/comfort story. The grammar is baaaaaaad though.

---------------------------------------------------

What a lovely hurt/comfort story! I really liked this!

Just don’t pay attention to the massive amounts of grammatical errors. Past tense/present tense (in the same sentence), wrong words, misspelled words, you can find it all here. I didn’t notice it in the first book, but here, oh yes. I still really enjoyed it though. Hurt/comfort is my crack.

Josh was planning on being in the military for as long as they wanted him when he loses leg in an ambush. He now has to return home and accept he won’t be a Marine anymore. Luckily his best friend Alvin offers him a place to stay, while Josh gets his life back on track.

Josh is a bit grumpy, since he has to learn to get a better handle on walking with his prosthesis and his cane. So he gets angry when the barista of the diner he likes to go to, bumps into him and makes him stumble. But Josh feels like an idiot once he sees the smaller guy is terrified of him.

Teddy is scared of the big angry man, but since he is scared of all big men, it’s no surprise to him. He is surprised that big man helps him through his panic attack.

Josh cannot get the cute man out of his head so when he bumps into him the next day at the diner, he is thrilled to see him. But he’s not happy to see that Teddy is sporting a split lip and a broken wrist.

Teddy is living with his Gran, who has Alzheimer, and his uncle, and is used to being a punching bag his entire life. First by his stepfather and then by his uncle. He definitely needs someone to be his hero. But he thinks no one would ever want him..

I just loved the hurt/comfort in this. I know this is a well tried formula, but the big guy protecting the abused smaller guy gets me hooked every single time. And this was no exception.

The romance is fluffy and more than a little cheesy, but I just ate it all up.
More please!

This was all too much. Too many traumas. Too many wrong words. Too many tense changes. Too much questionable grammar - and I'm not someone who is generally aware of grammar.

If I'd known there was so much about granny with Alzheimer I'd never have bought the book. Too raw. But that's still a side issue to all the other issues. Smart granny appears to have neatly tied everything up in a legal bow - but wasn't smart enough to deal with what was going on in her own house, despite no indication of how long she's been ill. And how old is this legal friend, to have been practising at a level to tie that big bow when Teddy moved in, but to only be a few years older than him? You'll likely find out in his book.

Teddy is so hapless, he's a victim of everyone his whole life. How is that attractive? You may sympathise but to feel attraction? He's too busy cowering from the world to display a personality. For me this was about all the issues he had, more so than any getting to know one another... It felt no single abuse/humiliation was quite enough to make him appear pitiful.
Josh in the meantime is big, strong and growly. But he calls Teddy 'baby' which is clearly endearing.

Things are resolved too easily meaning Teddy never has to get pro-active, his heroes (not hero's) are there to step in. It'd certainly be nice sometimes to have a knight in dusty camo, but achieving/overcoming things means so much more.

The editing - or rather lack of, needs addressing. Sense for since is a common misused word but there are many, if this was a paper version I'd have grabbed a red marker. The grammar is such some sentences need to be re-read. The book wobbles between past and present tense frequently changing mid sentence.

I read far enough to rate, but passed the halfway mark only through determination. This author is not for me.

And the cover is ..daunting.

In this sequel to Don't Leave Me Alone, we get to see how Josh (Alvin’s Marine buddy) is fairing in the aftermath of the serious injuries he suffered while deployed.

At the onset of this story, Josh moves into Alvin and Carter’s guest room where he is welcomed, supported and given the space and time he needs to re-evaluate his life post-military. He’s a bit of a grumpy sod, but who can really blame him considering all he faced growing up bouncing around the foster care system, or later during the intense and life-altering traumas he experienced during his time in the military.

When Josh meets Teddy – a slightly younger, definitely sweeter and somewhat shy man who works at the café Josh has come to frequent – Josh finds his inherent need to protect revitalised, especially once he realises Teddy is the ongoing victim of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of his own family members.

With the added help and support of Alvin and Carter, Josh shows Teddy that he no longer has to fight his demons alone. Soon enough the two men fall hopelessly in love, and despite constant complications from Teddy’s horrible family, they begin to plan a happy, safe and loving future together.

Much like its predecessor, this story was one of melancholy and heartache; but although this series is swimming in the hurt/comfort feels, it also has a cast of likeable male characters who go all lovey-dovey on one another to the nth degree.

Unfortunately, I’m having a similar reaction to Jenny Wood’s stories as I had when I first read and devoured books by Andria Large. The plot-lines and the characters created by each writer definitely turns my crank, but both have a writing style that I seriously struggle to process on a page-to-page basis. It leaves me very torn because I get immersed in the lives and the emotional happenings surrounding their lovable characters, but simultaneously I want to dive into the stories and edit the shit out of them myself just for some peace of mind. For me personally, story and character are more important aspects of my reading enjoyment than actual writing quality, but I know this is not the case for many of my GR friends, and as such, I advise due consideration be given when considering this writer’s work.

Meanwhile, I’ll be off devouring the rest of this series, with its sweet and vulnerable men.

It was very insta-everything! And it gets worse with grammar, punctuation, misspellings and mistaken words/names... :( I still liked the story though.

The main part of the plot between Josh and Teddy happened, literally, overnight! One day they met personally, the other Teddy was spending each and every second in Josh's company and house!
But... The kind of problems and obstacles life threw Teddy's way justified this insta-attraction, insta-living-together and insta-love to some extent...

As you all know already, I love big, protective Alphas who are tender and loving to their more vulnerable partners... And Josh, although wounded, disabled and recovering from a trauma himself, was strong enough and thoughtful enough to reach out and help those who were in need of someone's care and love.
And I loved Josh for that.

And Teddy? Having an abusive family (uncle, mother and step-father) and caring for his sick Gran, he's struggling... He's struggling so much with his financial and psychological problems that he absorbs all the kindness and amiability of his new friends (yes, we do get a large appearance of Alvin and Carter !!) like a sponge! I really, really felt for Teddy. And I adored his Gran and the old lady's attitude towards Josh ;)

The truth is the whole Unlike Heroes series reads much like Kennedy Ink books. We just have military men here instead of tattooists... Does it bother me? Yes, a bit. But what niggles me more is the lack of any editing/proofreading... :( The grammar mistakes and unnecessary commas are omnipresent. The same with the misplaced and mixed up names (Josh calling to Josh almost made me stop reading!).

So, did I like it? Generally, yes! Josh and Teddy's characters drew me in...
Do I continue with the series? I seriously don't know... :(
What do you think my GR friends?

4th Read 10-2018
I LOVE Josh and Teddy!!!

3rd Read 9-2017
GAH! I love this book so much! Definitely one of my favorites. Even though I read it back in 2016, I keep re-reading it in 2017 so I'm going to have to put this series on my Top Books of 2017. It's my list, so my rules ;)
I also changed my rating from 4 stars to 5!

2nd read 6-29-17
Same thoughts as the first, but I think I cried more this time around. I didn't read Alvin's book first because I didn't want to cry and here I was bawling nonstop. I noticed more editing errors and I really hope these books get polished up in the future. I would hate to have people miss out on amazing stories due to errors. There was even a name mix up that some *I* missed last time. If this gets polished up and revamped, I'll definitely change my rating to 5. That's how much I love Wood's boys. She can tell a story that sucks you in and that's okay because I never want them to end.

First Read 8-8-16

Once again the writing style really threw me off.

"Carter is the epitome of the perfect partner. (Try saying that five times fast.)"

Really? Did we really need that in the parentheses?

Back to Josh and Teddy. ADORED them. I thought Alvin broke my heart? Teddy man. Teddy broke it in a completely different way.

 photo StopCryingGIF_zps195e29ec.gif

I kind of wanted more of that protectiveness to come out in Josh though. I wanted to see him kick some ass and take names and I was kind of bummed we only got words and no action.

Overall, great 2nd story of this series. Took a star off, because of the writing style.

****Newly Revised and Re-released****

Josh, we met in the last book; he's Alvin's best friend/battle buddy.... after being injured in the army; he's shipped back home to recover without a leg! Agreeing to stay with Alvin and Carter til he figures out what he's going to do, he can't imagine finding a romantic relationship....
BUT, when the coffee shop he frequents has him literally running into a small frightened man, thoughts of his flaws and the way he's lacking take a back burner to be there and help out Teddy...
Yep, the dude's name is Teddy... how cute is that?!

Teddy, having been dealt a rougher than rough hand in this life, needs somebody to stick up for him, he needs someone who'll look out for him and be there for him.... And Josh does... before, Teddy, he didn't feel much like a man anymore, he didn't feel he had a purpose; but spending time with Teddy, being strong for him made him remember how strong he really was...
I LOVED writing these two together, they seem so different but they're so perfect for each other...

Teddy needed someone to lean on and Josh needed to feel strong again.... They found it with each other! I LOVE THEM BOTH!
I also had a really fun time writing the banter between Josh and Alvin, their relationship is obnoxious and smart assy. They have fun riling each other up.
If you haven't read either books in this series, you so should!

So okay okay okay.

I may be a little biased because I'm so absolutely positively in love with Ms. Wood.
I've read all 5 of her books and I literally can not get enough of them.
I thought Alvie was bad enough, I mean the boy came home and lost his whole family but in this one Josh-who was his bestie in the desert gets blown up and stuff and comes home scarred and missing a vital part of his body. He didn't feel attractive and he felt like he wasn't whole anymore. Which, come on. he wasn't! He was missing part of his leg!
Teddy didn't care though. All Teddy needed was a big strong man to stand up for him and not let people push him around, which they did all the time. Teddy's entire family was atrocious.
Well, not Gran, but she was sick, see.
The things that Teddy has to go through in this book are heartbreaking, I really felt for him.
The thing I love about Jenny is that her characters feel so real, the stories are real problems that I could see myself or one of my mates going through. It isn't unbelievable drivel.
I'm curious to see who is next. Will it be Lane and Kevin? Or one of them and Jordan? I think Jordan is going to have a hard time, I can't wait to see what happens next. Let's get to it now love, we need more!

Good storyline

This book had a good storyline and the characters were good. I've noticed the guys in this series find the insta-love, which i normally don't mind, but it seems to leave some missing pieces. There were also a few timeline issues and easy fixes with a food editor. I noticed in this book and book one that the word sense is used instead of since and given instead of givin'.

I’m only ever complaint is that Ms. Wood’s book are NEVER long enough, she makes you fall for her characters and then doesn’t give us a 400 + page books. Yes I’m that bloody greedy! Thankfully she always gives us a glimpse at her last couple and builds some interesting possible couples ahead.

This really isn't bad but the lack of proofreading and poor grammar takes it's toll on the reading experience.

I've given this 4*s in spite of the above and I can only hope that the next book isn't as bad and that someone decides to at read it at least once before publishing it.
