James Krüss was a German writer of children's and picture books, illustrator, poet, dramatist, scriptwriter, translator, and collector of children's poems and folk songs. In 1968 he received the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing, recognizing his "lasting contribution to children's literature".
The book " 3x3" by Krüss is a wonderful picturebook for all children who can count to three. The text is simple but delightful, and the illustrations are colorful and expressive. The plot of this book is simple: three monkeys are sitting on a tree. One monkey says, "I can't see very well." The other two monkeys tell him he's fine, but then the third monkey says, "I can see better." This makes the first two monkeys upset because they want to be seen as good monkeys instead of being just ones who can count to three. So they decide to throw stones at the third monkey until he admits that he has a problem with being seen as good when he can only count to three! This book is an amazing picture book for children who are learning to count. It's a fun story about three times three, so it's perfect for kids who are just learning their number values and can't quite get it down yet. The illustrations and text are vibrant and easy on the eyes, but also simple enough that young readers will be able to follow along without any problems. The plot is simple enough that younger readers will be able to follow along without any problems. There's no complicated math or vocabulary, just simple counting words and pictures of objects that come up in the story (like three apples and three cups). The illustrations are bright and fun, but not overbearingly so. They're colorful without being distracting, which makes them appealing even to older readers who might struggle with more complex illustrations. The characters are interesting and engaging, making this an easy-to-read story even for older students who might struggle with reading on their own sometimes. The characters are also relatable—there's a little boy named Eddy who loves counting, but he doesn't always know how many things there are in his house until they're counted by his sister Janey or his momma!

This book can be targeted towards the audience of third grade and even up to fifth grade. This book would be a great one to read before math class incentives or right before introducing the topic of repetitive numbers. Counting by three can be seen in the book.
I would have to give this book a five-star rating because besides the decrease in the reviews I believe that it is a great picture book to use as it displays animals and different things, it is also a great virtual representation for those who may need it as this book has many subtle colors to make it more of a pleasant read. Aside from this, I never knew there were books about numbers like three by three and I feel that this can be a great book to check out for those students who may be behind. I think my students would be surprised by page 2 as they see all the animals, and math along with it! I most definitely recommend this book to any math grade teacher.
