Taming the Wyld

Rate this book
The Witness Protection Program dumps JD Smith practically at the ends of the earth—in Two Pines, Alaska—to protect him until he can testify against a dangerous gang. He tries to stick to his story and keep his head down, but it’s impossible to ignore bush pilot Jake Wylder, a sexy loner with quite a reputation around the small town.

Flying medical supplies around Alaska suits Jake’s wild streak and love of freedom. He’s perfectly content to keep his romantic encounters casual—at least until he meets JD. Something about the nurse makes Jake think settling down might not be such a hardship. Now he just needs to convince JD he’s serious—which won’t be easy, given his past.

For a relationship to stand a chance, JD must testify so he can return to Two Pines as the man he really is—and Jake must grow into the man JD needs him to be.

The idea was intriguing -- I sure like to read about playboy being reformed. But the execution was lacking.

I know that the idea was probably to make Jake worked on this new relationship with JD. However, I didn't feel the chemistry or the sexual tension, and it seemed that Jake and JD (urgh, two MCs with same letter to start their name) spent more time apart rather than building up the relationship. I felt that Jake had more time shared with his best friend rather than JD.

So, the romance was MEH ... I reached around 1/3 before I started skimming. Also the Alaska setting didn't come fully alive in my humble opinion. Which was too bad, since the setting was one of the biggest reasons of my choosing this.

Rounded up

I’m a city gal to the core. I was born and always live in big cities. That probably influenced my life in a way, because even if I enjoy to be in the middle of the nature and I like hiking – we have wonderful hiking places where I live now – I’ve never been an adventure type. My hubby tried many times to persuade me to do camping but had to give up. We did camping at the very beginning of our marriage. Once. And never after.

I live and experience my adventures through my books. I adore to read about people who spend most of their lives in the wilderness, because it is sooo far and different from the life I live!..The characters who know how to deal with unpredictable weather, wild animals, who can enjoy the extraordinary beauty of the landscape and their own solitude in peace and quiet are my favorite.

It is why books with Alaska in titles or blurbs have all my attention. Alaska in combination with The Witness Protection Program and FBI? Even better. I’m a passionate mystery reader as many of you maybe already know. Besides, the blurb sounded kind like Did You Hear About the Morgans?, the movie I like. What could be better?! I was excited.

It started well. Well…at least it started promising.

Bush pilot Jake Wylder, Alaskan born and bred, an owner of a small transport company of two small planes in Alaska, that delivers medical supplies, is sexy as hell and slut to the core. In spite of his reputation men and women, old and young can’t resist his charms and he always lands in someone’s bed if he wants. JD Smith, a California native, who is used to sun and surf, and doesn’t actually know how snow look likes, a doctor, who accidentally occurred to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and for this reason has to spend some months, up to the trail, under The Witness Protection Program in Alaska, to play nurse at the local hospital.

I have to warn all mystery fans: the mystery part isn’t present in this novel. Except some short communications with the agent in charge of the JD’s case, and a short explanation of why JD is where he is at the beginning, there is no mention of it at all later, nothing dangerous or thrilling happens here.

That actually not a bad thing. It means that the plot is focused utterly on the romance part.
A sexy slutty bi pilot vs. sexy and good-mannered city doctor.
A small town citizen vs. a big city resident.
Jack’s glacier blue eyes vs. JD’s brightest green eyes.
Their first meeting was predestined.

Of course they were immediately struck by the beauty of the opposite side.
What follows after, shortly:

~ Jack falls in love, stops to sleep around and tries everything to win the attention of JD. Though deep in his heart he knows that a city gay guy won’t probably be happy to spend the rest of his life in the wild.
~ JD knows the reputation of Jack and tries to fight his feelings, because he is not a one-nigh-stand type and prefers serious relationships and he doesn’t think he can spend the rest of his life far away from a big city.
~Well...Taming the Wyld is a contemporary MM romance. And a romance book HAS to follow the rules. That means, they will find a solution and they will stay together.
The END.

After I mentioned that there is no mystery present here, I have unfortunately to add that there is no romance present here either. A not convincing enough or not presented at all romance in a romance novel is not a good sign.

The author TRIED hard to create a romance relationship, but that would include, in particular

1. a relationship’s build up
2. sexual tension
3. well written sex scenes
4. intense dialogues

Without these components there is no romance for me. Sorry.

And the last and the most important fact:
the plot HAS to deliver something special about the story.
Lucie Archer failed on all fronts.

Not to mention, that the author failed also to create impressive setting surroundings -the story could be placed anywhere else, I didn’t feel the spirit of Alaska at all. Very pity.

Sorry. No recommendation from me.

Jake Wylder is a love 'em then leave 'em kinda guy, and he's not particular when it comes to gender either. Male - Female, it's all the same when you're horizontal. He's quite successful in business as well, doing what he loves, flying, and helping people at the same time. It's the selfless act of helping and not expecting anything in return that he and new-comer, JD Smith, have in common. From the start, Wylder is enamored with JD, determined to add another notch to his bedpost. What's odd is that Wylder wants more than just his obligatory one night with JD.

Short, sexy and steamy... my three favorite colors! What a delicious little read this was. I thoroughly enjoyed the game of cat and mouse, and the complete role reversal that took place in this story. The perpetual bachelor gets a taste of his own medicine when his attempts at getting JD into his bed are continually rebuffed. But it's not just Wylder's reputation that has JD pulling the brakes. The sexy nurse has his own baggage and, unlike Wylder's, JD's secret could get them both killed.

Just a well written story with these characters that pull you in, make you relate and cheer for them to make it work in the end. There is a healthy dose of passion and determination, a bit of romance, intrigue and suspense, and just a dash of angst. Definitely a must read novella. I give this one 5 stars... but that's just my two cents.

This was a cute short story. I did have a problem with concentrating on it. It could have been me, but otherwise I thought it was cute. I've never read anything by this author so the blurb was something that I was interested in. I found it humorous at times and a little angsty on JD's part, and cheesy.

That's okay, I can deal with this trifecta of things in such a short story. I liked Jake and his all his whorish ways. I don't get what's the big deal, he's still in his 20's, single, and just having fun. I think he's only doing what people allowed him to do so far. I did enjoy seeing him suffer with JD. JD definitely made him work for it. LOL. Taming the Wyld had a little bit of plot substance since JD is in the federal witness protection agency. He is not expecting to meet or fall in love with someone. Now he has to think of all the consequences of making it work. I think the author did a great job on getting these two together. I like that they started slow and gradually worked their way up. I did enjoy the events coming together at the end! I look forward to more from her. P.s, I'm not an animal persons but I loved their pets names, Flower and Rory. So cute and cheesy on Rory's name but I liked it nonetheless.

The romance didn't really work for me in this book as the two MC's spent a great deal of time separate. Jake came to his conclusion that he had feelings for JD way to quickly and his "reform" also happened to quickly for me. I didn't really get the full effect of the book being set in Alaska (seemed it could have been in any small town that you had to get to by plane). Finally, there was no suspense or mystery to go along with the whole witness protection part of the book. That would have been fine if the romance was hard hitting but for me it just didn't work.

This newest story in the ‘States of Love’ series with its stories of romance that span every corner of the United States, is set in Alaska. Right from the start it pulled me in with descriptions of wide open spaces and mountains, small towns where everyone knows everyone else’s business, and distances large enough that an air taxi service is considered the norm if you want to go anywhere beyond your own town. With two men who start off on a less than amiable foot - one a born Alaskan and the other a recent, if temporary, transplant - there are many opportunities to see the kind of life available in the state with the nickname “The Last Frontier”. I have never visited so far, but after reading this story, I am determined to make it happen.

JD is a guy in trouble. He is a young doctor who got caught up in taking care of the wrong patients – drug lords – because he needed money. He decided to turn state’s witness and is now in witness protection under an assumed name, working as a nurse, and living very far from the warmth of California. His surprise at finding a bear searching his garbage for edibles is as entertaining as his observations about the size of the local mosquitos and the lack of heat even though it’s early summer.

Jake is a pretty adventurous type, and his career as a pilot flying medical supplies and passengers around Alaska is a good fit for him. Jake also likes variety in his personal life, hops from one bed to the next, and is pretty indiscriminate in whom he sleeps with. It has earned him a certain reputation, and it’s bound to trip him up if he ever decides to be serious about anyone. Not that he can imagine that will ever happen – but from the first moment he sets eyes on JD, everything changes for him.

With JD not being able to tell Jake the truth about who he is, and Jake fighting his reputation, the road to romance is not an easy one for these two men. I was glad to see that both of them are equally stubborn, and between that and friends who decide to get involved in helping them figure out what’s right for them, it is still a very close call.

If you like stories set in places where the great outdoors plays an active role in everyday life, if two men with lots of baggage sound like an intriguing combination, and if you’re looking for a read with lots of local flavor, two guys who are as stubborn as they are hot, and a love story with obstacles of all types, then you will probably like this novella.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

This story is part of Dreamspinner’s States of Love collection, the point of which is to showcase something unique to each state while telling a love story. I think Archer did exceptionally well in that regard. I had no trouble imagining the Alaskan landscape, the small towns, or the need to fly everywhere. That coupled with two likable characters made for a nice story.

Both the MCs are fleshed out fairly well, and we got to spend time with both Jake and JD, so we know how both men are thinking and feeling. I was glad for this in the story, as if we hadn’t been able to see Jake’s thoughts, he would have come across as nothing more than a careless player. Because we got to see his growth first hand, I was able to believe he was ready to change his ways and make a different life for himself. In the same regard, I was glad to see JD’s internal struggles with getting involved with Jake, and I loved watching him fall in love with Alaska and with Jake.

I will say, however, that I wished they had gotten together a little earlier in the story. While it made sense that it would take them time to get to that point, the last third of the book felt rushed. As Jake and JD finally get together and start moving forward, the rest of the story happens at a breakneck speed. So that pacing was a bit of an issue for me. Especially because these guys had fantastic chemistry. Their banter and reactions to each other were the highlight of this book. So I really wish I could have seen more of it.

Book: Taming the Wyld
Author: Lucie Archer
Rating: 4 Stars

Not only is this a new to me author but it will be the first of the States of Love series as well. So to say I am excited is an understatement!

This is a short story that is sexy and full of heat. Who can’t love a little quicky? Jake Wylder is exactly that wild. His last “long term” relationship lasted 7 months but he’s more of the love ‘em and leave ‘em type and because he is pansexual the choices are vast. Of course, this has gotten him into trouble a time or two. He loves his job and business of flying even after suffering a lose that almost kept him grounded the call was too strong. As soon as Jake meets sexy nurse JD he wants him in his bed but JD isn’t having it. Soon enough Jake realizes maybe having JD in his bed isn’t all he wants.

JD has his reason s for turning down Jake mainly all the baggage he carries with him to Alaska in the Witness Protection Program. Doing anything but keeping his head down could mean danger for him and those around him. And he is sure someone like Jake isn’t used to being turned down. But he loves to help people

I loved the heat and the Witness Protection Program angle piqued my curiosity from the get go! Not to mention a bit of suspense. The author wrote these two guys in a way that had to rooting for them from the sidelines and feeling connected to their story all at once. Her character are well written and completely likeable.

If you are looking for a novella with romance, intrigue, suspense, and a bad boy that falls head over heals than this is your story!

This story had a lot of potential. I liked the MCs, the setting and the situation.

One of the things that made JD really unique was that he really wanted to hold out for a relationship and being in witness protection meant there was no way he was about to get involved with anyone, no matter how charming. So I was shocked when literally out of the blue he changes his tune and begins to date Jake. There was no ground breaking event, it just felt like he suddenly switched gears. Suddenly, he isn’t as unique and interesting.

Jake (I was frustrated that both MCs had J names) was harder to like. Sure, he was charming, but he really was a man-slut, and the story wasn’t long enough for me to believe he’d really changed his ways. I wanted him to be a reformed man, but we were given nothing to believe that’d happened. Just that he liked JD. He kept bugging him and bugging him, and finally JD cracked.

I was also really bothered by JD’s situation. He ended up keeping his license (I’m being as vague as possible so as to avoid spoilers) but I think – in reality- he’d have lost it in the drug bust. That would have been a more interesting story. Him having to deal with a new career in addition to the new location.

In the end, we got a very low steam romance with a plot full of holes and a quick and unsatisfying resolution.

The writing was good and it moved quickly but there were too many issues for me to recommend this.

Dr. Jordan Drake is placed in the Witness Protection Program in a small town in Alaska. There he becomes JD Smith, a nurse. When he meets Alaska's playboy bush pilot, Jake Wylder, they have instant chemistry.

Jake is pansexual and seems to hook up with every man or woman he's attracted to. The moment he looks into the green eyes of JD Smith, he's smitten. JD doesn't succumb easily to Jake's charms and it makes Jake realize that it's time for him to change his ways and grow up.

Jake decides to try and woo JD and chips away at his walls until they're both falling for each other. Then JD's real life interrupts them.

I really enjoyed Jordan and Jake's story. This is a light read with little to no angst and happily ever after. It's a good way to spend a couple hours when you just want to get away and read a sweet story!

Jake is a playboy who doesn't want to settle down. JD is a doctor (pretending to be a nurse) who is forced to move to Alaska as part of witness protection. Jake immediately sees JD, but there is something about him that pulls him in more than he has ever experienced before. The two navigate choppy waters of Jake's reputation, but eventually become friends and then more.

I enjoyed this book. I liked the dynamic between Jake and JD, and I enjoyed watching Jake's discovery of his feelings and desire to become settled with a relationship. There wasn't a lot of angst or drama, and the little bit that was present was handled more in a time jump rather than tons of pages of it. I thought it was handled well. I really enjoyed how the story wrapped up and ended. Well written, and I connected with the characters.

I liked this story, it was funny at times as Jake tried to reform his love em and leave em ways.
JD has to hide his identity and whilst it should have created tension, it didn't really.
It was quite short and I think more background to both guys but especially JD would have got more investment in their relationship.
I think the distance and time factors of dating in a wilderness came over but again, didn't do the story development many favours.

Meh. This one didn't do much for me.

I hated Cheryl, I loved Denny and Ronda, I kind of liked Jack, and I sort of liked JD.

JD and all his flubs, ummm...really? Aren't Marshalls supposed to stay with their charges or really close to them? JD's was in Texas and he was in Alaska? Maybe I'm wrong.

I absolutely loved Taming the Wyld – 4 stars all the way!
Jake Wylder, a total playboy who has “connected” with every available option in his Alaskan town/city/state, meets JD Smith and falls instantly in lust. While Jake is a player, he was so easy to connect with and fall in love with from the very start – especially when his best friend Denny sticks by him and then the great cute-meet with JD.

JD is in witness protection and has to hide a lot of who he is… especially when he’s rebelling against falling for Jake. But alas, they are able to figure something out – even knowing that it will likely all come to an end. I don’t usually like “insta-love” stories, but this one felt different – although short in length, the characters seemed to connect and actually date (gasp, right?) before they fell for each other all the way. It was more of a lust to dating to love – in a super short amount of time.

Both characters were developed well and my only complaint is that this book is too short!!! There were are a lot of details that felt skimmed over, leaving more room for the romance… but I wanted more of Jake and JD. This is a great read for anyone who wants a super-cute love story, in a short amount of book time. You’ll fall in love with the reformed playboy Jake – and root for JD.

This book is what I would describe as a sweet read with a little bit of turmoil. Lucien Archer is not an author that I have read a book by before but I will definitely be checking out more books by Lucie Archerbin the near future. I really enjoyed his read.

JD is new to the area. He has never been to Alaska before and at first he is finding it hard to adjust to such dramatic changes from his normal home in California. He is having a hard time adjusting to being a nurse, to the daylight lasting so long in the day, to such a small town where everyone knows everyone and everyone's business, and to the attention he is getting. Everything is different from his normal life including his name.

JD has no choice in any of it either because he is witness protection and this is where they have sent him in order to keep him safe until the trial. JD does not believe he could ever get used to the way of life in Alaska. Boy was he wrong.

Jake owes an airplane company that flies medical supplies and other things to the area he lives. One of his stops is in Two Pines where JD is a nurse. To say he is smitten at first sight is an understatement. The only problem is JD wants nothing to do with Jake because he has heard about the revolving door to Jakes bedroom and he does not want to be another notch on his bed post.

Eventually JD gives in and goes out with Jake and from there they both know they want to be together. The problem that is standing in their way is Jake knows nothing about JD's past or the witness protection and when he finds out he feels betrayed by JD, who as it turns out is actually Jordon Drake not JD.

The betrayal that Jake feels leads them to no longer speaking before JD leaves and Jake is not sure he will ever hear from JD again.

This book was a quick read but it is very good. There is humor in it and there is some heartbreak and hurt. But there is also love too. I really enjoyed this book and reading about Jake and JD. I almost hope that there will be another book that will be a follow up to them. The only negative thing I have to say about it is I wish there would have been more info on the outcome of the trial that JD had to go through and I wish there had been more in depth writing around his whole reasoning for having to join witness protection to begin with. Other then those two minor details I think it was a good read and I think others would agree also. I look forward to reading more by Lucie Archer in the future.

Pilot Jake Wylder is known around town for his numerous bedroom exploits, whether men or women, Jake enjoys his freedom while he still can. However, all that changes when he meets Nurse JD Smith. JD pings all of Jake's buttons and he finds himself desperately trying to woo JD, if only he had a clue how to do it. It's going to take a whole lot of work and self-control to show this man that Jake is serious about wanting more than a simple roll in the sheets.

JD Smith is new to Two Pines, Alaska. As a member of WitSec, he is awaiting his chance to testify in court against a gang going down for drugs. He knows he shouldn't get close to anyone, not when he has no clue how long he'll be around. But unrepentant player Jake Wylder is getting harder and harder to resist. JD can see how serious Jake is about him and he fears once Jake learns the truth about him things will end even before they really get started.

***A copy of this book was provided by Dreamspinner Press to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review***

Jake is arrogant and cocky, completely unapologetic about the way he treats his many conquests and pretty much an overgrown child. He's also vulnerable, funny, loyal to those he cares about and charming. Everyone in the State pretty much knows if you fall for his charms and sleep with him, you can't expect much after. This is him and you love him or you hate him. Honestly, I had no idea which side I'd fall in until he got Rory, his puppy. After that I started to see that Jake wasn't a bad guy, he just needed to grow up. JD and Rory definitely helped with that.

JD was more of a mystery to me. I never quite got to know him. He was likable and seemed to fit with Jake but he pretty much took a back seat to Jake's more vibrant character. There were a few fun side characters as well that played really well to Jake's personality. His best friend Denny who was like a brother and didn't let Jake get away with anything and his wife Ronda who was the sweet nurturer of the group. Of course there was also Cheryl, the jilted lover, who stupidly slept with Jake and never got over being relegated to a one-night-stand.

I enjoyed the story, it's funny and easy to read. We are treated to a small amount of angst but the whole thing seems to move at a fast pace. Great weekend book.

From that review: "Taming the Wyld (States of Love) by Lucie Archer introduced me to a new author and a new series in one book, two things that I love. In Taming the Wyld, Archer gave me several things I always look for in a contemporary romance. A location guaranteed to pull me in, in this case small town Alaska, two men with interesting backgrounds, and a plot just different enough to hook me."

Quick read though I didn't love either character. Wyld was a reformed playboy with instalove for JD. JD is in witness protection and lonely so allows Wyld to court him. The romance was average but the lovely Alaska setting made the novella for me.
