Louise Hay was born to a poor mother who married Hay's violent stepfather. When she was about five, she was raped by a neighbor. At fifteen she dropped out of high school without a diploma, became pregnant, and on her sixteenth birthday gave up her newborn baby girl for adoption.
She moved to Chicago, where she worked in menial jobs, before moving in 1950 to New York. At this point she changed her name and began a career as a fashion model. She was successful at this, working for Bill Blass, Oleg Cassini, and Pauline Trigere.
In 1954, she married Andrew Hay, but after fourteen years of marriage Louise was devastated when Andrew left her for another woman.
Hay said that she found the First Church of Religious Science on 48th Street, which taught the transformative power of thought. Hay revealed that here she studied the metaphysical works of authors like Florence Scovel Shinn and the Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes.
In the early 1970's Hay became a Religious Science practitioner. In this role she led people in spoken affirmations meant to cure their illnesses. She also became popular as a workshop leader.
She studied transcendental meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at his university in Fairfield, Iowa.
In 1977 or 1978 she found she had cervical cancer, and she concluded that its cause was her unwillingness to let go of resentment over her childhood abuse and rape. She refused medical treatment, and began a regimen of forgiveness, therapy, reflexology, nutrition, and occasional enemas, and claims she rid herself of the cancer. She declared that there is no doctor left who can confirm this story, but swore that it is true.
In 1976 Hay wrote a small pamphlet, which came to be called "Heal Your Body." This pamphlet was enlarged and extended into her book You Can Heal Your Life, which was published in 1984. As of February 2008, it is still on the New York Times best sellers list.
Around the same time she began leading support groups for people living with H.I.V. or AIDS that she called Hay Rides. These grew from a few people in her living room to hundreds in a large hall in West Hollywood. Her work with AIDS patients drew fame and she was invited to appear on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Donahue" in the same week in March, 1988.
You Can Heal Your Life immediately landed on the New York Times Best Sellers List. More than 35 million copies are now in print around the world in more than 30 languages and has been made into a movie.
Louise Hay established Hay House Publishing. It is the primary publisher of books and audio books by Deepak Chopra and Doreen Virtue, as well as many books by Wayne Dyer.
In addition to running her publishing company, Hay runs a charitable organization called Hay Foundation that was established in 1985.
Honestly, I loved this! It was so positive and encouraging. Such wonderful good feelings imerged and engulfed me each time I listened to this! I have had mixed feelings about some of Ms. Hay's books before, but I loved this one! I found myself turning it on everynight from when I first read (and finished it) to listen to as I went to sleep... filling my head, mind and subconscious mind with postive statements and thoughts - I would always wake up with that general same feeling as well! I wish I actually owned this one! Highly Recommend to anyone.
Very loving, though at times completely delusional. This is "The Secret" on steroids. Hay tells you everything you want to hear, so of course working hard to achieve things doesn't show up in any of this.
Some quotes that did make sense:
1. If we refuse to change, life passes us by. Just as a flexible body is comfortable to be in, a flexible mind is comfortable to live in. 2. I have learned to love my thoughts. They are my best friends. 3. I came into this planet to experience each age, and they are all good. 4. This is my special moment, and I rejoice it. One that I've never lived before. 5. The more kind and loving thoughts we have, the more we attract to ourselves. 6. I only give out that which I wish to receive in return. 7. I know each person has divine wisdom and guidance within them, so I do not have to run their lives for them. 8. I lovingly create my own reality. 9. I am open and receptive to new avenues of income. 10. I trust my inner wisdom, and I make decisions with me. 11. As we create safety and security in our minds, then we will find it in our world. 12. Our cells are constantly responding to the mental atmosphere within us. Like people, they do their best work in a happy, loving environment. 13. A good listener is a thoughtful friend.
I liked most of the affirmations but some are just extremely outdated. Especially the one on gender roles/energies and the one that claimed a thin body is ‘healthy’ and a fat one is ‘toxic.’ Those claims are merely based on double standards and inaccuracy.
I kinda stumbled on this after looking for something else. Louise Hay dedicated her whole life to helping people make changes in their own life. There is her website that will also introduce you to 27 other books written by her. I got a lot out of it and I love all the affirmations that I can apply in my own life. However if you decide to get this book or to listen to this audio download, you'll find that you may begin to think more positively and create exciting changes in your life! I don’t have any negative to say about this cause i love positive self help books that I can read in between the fiction and nonfiction. May Louise Hay who Passed away last year Rest In Peace.
I read this book every month. For a while I was listening to it everyday. This book helped me believe I could get my dream house and I did! When I start to fall back into that ordinary life routine this helps me wake up and get back on track. Life moves too fast to waste time. It is ok to relax, but when you stop achieving goals regularly life will pass you by.
Amazing powerful thoughts that are perfect to start your day with or sleep while listening to. Affirmations that we all should repeat over and over to spread love to the universe and receive it as well. My first time reading for Louise Hay but for sure not the last ! :)
So many good reminders. It will be easy to return to this and listen again and again. The 101 thoughts are simply shared as statements in a conversational tone. They are not numbered or announced. That made this book very easy to listen to.
I love Louise Hay books and audiobooks. I can't remember how I came across her but I can't be grateful enough for this accidental introduction to her words of wisdom. She is the one who taught me positive thinking , be grateful and appreciate what you have (despite all the literature I read on the topic nothing was sticking), there is something about her voice that sound so wise and experienced, choice of words are just so simplistic and empowering.
I have listened for this audiobook number of times in the past 3 years and I just can't stop. She is my definitely go to female figure to comfort me, remind me of basics, empower me that I am kind, caring and loving and everything will work out just fine.

This is an audiobook (only option it’s meant to be audio) that you can get through Libby or other audiobook platforms. I absolutely love listening to it. It gives positive daily mantras that might sound a little “woo woo” for some people but it’s right up my alley. It reminds you of things to think about during your daily life. An example of one that really stuck out was “when a friend comes to you with a problem, it doesn’t necessarily mean they want you to fix it. Probably all they want is a sympathetic ear. A good listener is a valuable friend.” Another one was “I am deeply fulfilled by all that I do. We will never have the opportunity to live this day again so savor every moment, there is richness and fullness in everything we do. Each moment of the day is special to me, as I follow my higher instincts and listen to my heart. I am at peace in my world and affairs.” Sometimes it’s nice to listen to something that reminds you the value of everything you already have. I highly recommend!!
I listened to this audiobook. It’s a little over an hour long. First of all, I do love her voice. It has a musicality to it that keeps me interested. Basically this is a collection of thoughts or wisdoms about life and how to live it better. I will have to listen several times to really “hear” it all but everything did make sense. I did read some reviews that think it’s fantasy thinking but it’s easy to think that especially if something hits home. I’m not saying these things are easy to do. I’m almost 50 and changing my thoughts will not be easy but I think that when you feel stuck in life, it’s exactly the time to try changes. I do recommend this.
Listen to the audio and found the background piano playing while reading of the book was annoying and ultimately resulted in me stopping the book without finishing. Disclaimer* I do have lupus and sensitive to light, touching on extremities, and sound.
What I did listen to was half good stuff that makes sense and should be implemented in everyones life and then the other half I felt was recorded after smoking weed and going weird (the Government is working and loving the people ???)
I adore Louise Hay, her spirit lights me up whenever I read or hear her words. I find that her wisdom has seen me through some challenging times in the past few years, and I feel like they would be helpful to anyone and everyone. Her words will help you get into a positive mindset, and lift your spirits no matter what is going on in your life. Totally recommend the audio for this, her voice is so rhythmic and inspirational.
I listened to this on Overdrive. It may have been better had I read it and could keep notes in the margins. The thoughts were interesting and some stuck out. Unfortunately, the audio read through them like a radio host on air on a station where I live and I change the station. Perhaps I'll find a copy of this to truly be able to appreciate the advice it gives.
Short and sweet and just what I needed to release some thoughts that were holding me back. Sometimes you just need someone to remind you to forgive yourself and let it go. A little hippy and I like it. If you need a short pick me up or even if you wanted to use this for a guided meditation. I listened to half while running and the other half while lying down and practicing breathing exercises.
I think I may have listened to part or all of this on a background affirmation video of Louise's online. I agree with other reviews that some of these affirmations are outdated and I don't believe all of them but nonetheless I take the ones that resonate and feel overall that they are positive and relaxing to listen to. I generally really appreciate Louise :)
This is definitely a favorite and I'm going to start it over right now to keep listening to it. It's great to have on in the background while doing other things and it's enlightening when you find yourself taking action on something that you didn't even realize you remembered from this lovely audiobook. Soothing voice and cheerful messages that put perspective on life and its message to us.
101 affirmations that will appeal to all audiences. I wish I could download a permanent audio version of this book to listen to over and over. The messages contained in this book are important and invaluable.
This is a book I listen to on regular rotation during my long walks. Love, love, love. I'm not sure if I would enjoy it as much if I was simply reading it in paper form. It's more of a meditation as an audiobook.
5 stars. All the things you already know, or should know, but needed to hear in the author’s loving voice. She was correct — the ones you need DO pop out at you!
