From an early age Miranda Brock has always loved fantasy and adventure everything. Since she doesn't live in a world of enchanting powers, mythical beasts, and things unbelievable she has decided to write about them. (Although, if you happen to see a dragon flying around, do tell her.) Born in southern Illinois, where she still resides with her husband and two children, she grew up running through the woods, playing in creeks, and riding horses. What started out as writing poetry grew into short stories and eventually led to her first novel, Souls Discovered. Miranda lives in the country where she finds inspiration in the simplicity and beauty around her. With the help of a ridiculous amount of coffee and some good music she writes whenever she gets a chance.

After losing her family in a fiery inferno, Autumn finds herself being hunted by dark and menacing creatures. From out of nowhere she is rescued by an Adonis, but has she really been rescued or is he, too out to kidnap her? What Autumn will learn is beyond her wildest fantasy and the world she once believed in becomes a memory in her mind. Hang on as Miranda Brock’s Souls Discovered whisks you into a world of raging wars, magical windows, super powers and the first blush of a love that can never be.

Seven warriors called the Searchers, each handsome, intelligent and unique in their personalities have all sworn their fealty to Autumn, who they refer to as the Keeper, the conduit to a realm far beyond Earth’s realm. Autumn has become a leader, the one who sees where the enemy is and takes her Searchers into battle. One searcher is different from the rest, he is almost robotic, as he remains so distant. Jason is the leader and it takes all he has to keep his hands off Autumn. Better to let her think he is a stone, but soon his walls crumble and their feelings could violate the purity demanded of the Keeper. Will Autumn become too great of a distraction in battle for her Seven Searchers as they wage war on the Dehmans that are coming to steal her window and her growing powers?

Miranda Brock has created a world of high emotion, drama and angst, speaking perfectly to a young adult audience that will understand Jason and Autumn’s plight. Detailed scenes of confrontation, verbal, physical and emotional makes for reading that will take one out of the world of reality and into one filled with what ifs as her fantasy becomes a tangled web in the battle of good versus evil, fated responsibility and feelings from the heart as one girl must rise to the occasion and go beyond the call of duty.

When I first started reading this book I thought it was going to be one of those reverse harlem deals, because about 7 guys were introduced, one more "model-like" than the next, looking tall, dark and dangerous. So, if you're into reverse harlem- sorry to disappoint- the book does not revolve around trying to figure out a way how to get the girl to settle down in a house with 7 lads. The choice of lads is interesting though- we have a Russian, a Japanese, a Scot, an Irishman, the rest are American (I think). They each come with a special set of abilities because they are The Searchers. And Autumn, the girl, is their Keeper.

The book has a pretty decent blurb because it sums it up neat and tidy yet without giving away all the fun and games I actually ended up reading about. As you can see, bonds of friendship and love are mentioned. Yes, The Oracle delivers a pretty reasonable cockblock for the guys to stay away from Autumn on a more intimate level, but will it stop a guy? Or guys? ^^

It was a decent read with plenty of action, and different kind of action at that. All the fight scenes, which I was worried were going to be come repetitive, were actually brilliantly written and a new obstacle introduced each time. This of course made the story evolve with good pace and kept my interest and attention throughout.

The characters... The boys, mainly... It was great to see so many different personalities and with their accents embedded into the story (Russian, Scot, Irish) I did start feeling kinship towards one or the other. I did have a bit of an info-dump feeling creep over me at the beginning of the story where the guys are all introduced. It read a bit "mechanical" as if their descriptions of appearance were written into a JavaScript array. No bother though, I still enjoyed. Maybe not the image of a top hat but, meh :)

There was a quite a few concepts which I liked the idea of. Say, The Window showing the Keeper and the Searchers where to go next. I also liked what The Window can enable Autumn to do when near Dehmons- that was a mighty idea and I hope in the next book this will put Autumn in front of a dilemma.

And then, the biggest surprise of all! The ending! But my lips are sealed and my hands tied. I can't even tell you about the ending in between the lines, because then you'd expect it as you start reading the book... But it was great and I would definitely want to read the next book in the series... I hope it is a series? Surely, with an ending like that it is!

This young adult fantasy novel was a fun filled emotional roller coaster from the start.
I loved the character growth between Autumn and her searchers. There was a great build-up and once the fight sequences started, I really enjoyed the flow and progression of the story. There was a lot of description about each character and their abilities, but I wish we had spent more time with them one on one.
I loved that this story was a variation on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. What a cool concept to throw in some curve balls and turn it into a fantasy about dehmons was original. I haven't read anything else like this book, and I enjoyed it. I loved the window, the aspect of the story where it showed them where to go next, the battle scenes, and how Autumn could progress their powers and strengthen her Searchers.
I like a strong female heroine, and Autumn did not disappoint. In fact, I loved that the female took the lead role, a great example for girls. Even the Oracle was female as women run the show in this fantasy world.
In the end, I was left with the hope that the Keeper and her Searchers would persevere. A great story and a fun young adult novel. I highly recommend it.

Woven with action from the very first page, Souls Discovered is impossible to put down once you start reading. I loved how the author didn’t have a dull moment in the book by starting us out with a glimpse into Autumn’s seamlessly normal life before tossing her into a brand-new world of mysteries. The relationships between Autumn and the searchers were very well fleshed out and it gave each of the characters their own depth.

The world created by Miss Brock is one in which will not disappoint. Each character’s ability is more fascinating than the last and the twists and turns that Autumn must overcome as a Keeper were a fresh take on the usual YA fantasy obstacles. The ending was a bit predictable but seeing as how this is part of a series, I’m excited to see where the rest of the books take us.

Ohmygosh! What??

I've just finished this book and I have no words.

It's SO good though.
Highs, lows, plot twists, and every emotion conceivable... this is your fate if you pick up this book.

You will love the characters, you will love the story, you will scream as you ride the rollercoaster of this plot.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go and curl up in the corner and rock until the sequel is delivered.

Book Review: This is a novel (one of many, unfortunately) where I felt the description sounded more generic than the novel. It sounds very full of “fights and danger,” but in reality, most of the book was spent at their safe home base, sorting out their powers and relationships rather than on the run, dealing with Dehmons. It is more character oriented than most, but I wouldn’t call it character driven because the characters varied widely, sometimes being little more than stereotyped caricatures and sometimes being actual human beings that made you care (and even cry at one point). So here’s a closer look at the Narration, Content, Characters, Artwork, Worldbuilding, and my Overall Response.

Narration: 3 out of 5. This was one of the weakest parts of the story. There was description without any real evocation of mood or any distinct coloring of setting. Woods felt like woods, farm like farm, city like city, without all the natural variations that makes each place different. Smell and touch wasn’t used a lot, nor taste. It was mostly sight only, and even then, we didn’t get a lot of details. For example, we’re told that Ronan’s room was messy, but besides an unmade bed, we aren’t told how. Are there tissues on the bedside table? Paper wads under the desk? Laundry on the floor? We just aren’t told. But I did appreciate the generalized information about wounds, to where blood and gore wasn’t highlighted, which I felt was YA appropriate.

Another thing that bugged me about the narration was the lack of physical descriptions. Besides the first onslaught of details, where we get the descriptions, heights, and builds of all seven Searchers at once, we are rarely reminded of what the people look like (to where I forgot that Tsukasa had spiked hair). We get some more narrative details about Autumn, Jason, and Ronan as they are the main characters and the focus of the love triangle, but other than that, it’s a one-shot deal.

And the narration is Omniscient, but there is no distinct narrator, so it can come across as vaguely head-hopping, as we go from Autumn’s feelings to Jason’s point-of-view in the same section, one paragraph leading to another. Personally, it’s my least favorite narrative form, as you lose all the intense flavor of first person or third person close without gaining a narrator with his special viewpoint and insight into the story. And I can only think of one line in the story where we gained from the narrative viewpoint, being told that they’d never see a certain place again. Having a more distinct idea of who’s telling this story and why would improve the experience, I think (that, or dispensing with the narrator entirely and becoming one with the characters to where we see and feel everything they do).

Content: 4 out of 5. Some readers might feel that the pacing of the novel is slow and short on adventure, as the ratio of fights and danger to being at home, safe, training (or recovering) is probably somewhere around 1:4, but I liked how Autumn and the Searchers were given time to interact, to get to know each other, and to become a (somewhat) cohesive group. There was no language and only moderate violence and sexual content, which fits the YA fantasy genre, but it did seem a bit too “happy and clean YA” in feel. Despite one of the Searchers coming from a gang background and all of them being from broken homes or where they lost their family, they were a happy bunch, eager to share and love and live, and it felt like they should’ve been dealing with a lot more, emotionally. After all, they face evil forces on a regular basis and are the ones who are going to save the world. That ought to come with some interrelational baggage, I’d think.

Characters: 3 out of 5. This is probably what frustrated me the most about the book. The characters felt very inconsistent. When the Searchers were first presented, one after the other, they felt very stereotyped. The Russian was a big chap, the Japanese fellow the smallest, but every one of them looked like a model according to the narration. They were all good with weapons (which was probably a requirement of the job) but they were also very adept at putting the past behind them and moving on. None of them seemed to have any emotional scars and some of their personalities seemed so similar that I had trouble telling them apart (like Finley, Miller, and Gabriel: aside from accents and a few identity elements, they seemed to have the same general voice).

And while some of them, like Jason and Autumn, Tsukasa and Petr eventually gained a distinct identity, it felt like it slipped at times, going back into a stereotype. At one point, Jason (who has been the leader and a loner up to this point) just loses his resolve and starts showing his feelings for Autumn, and I felt like this was very inconsistent with who he’d been up to that point. He wasn’t close to anyone, so why would he go against the orders of the Oracle (as they understood them) and give in to his attraction? I felt like he’d fight it, bury it, ignore it, and struggle with it a lot longer than he did. Likewise, some of his fights with Autumn came across equally petty and out of character. If he was the leader and had had to grow up early, like he supposedly had, then it seemed like he’d be better at getting past disagreements (maybe hiding them and letting them simmer, but he certainly didn’t seem like the “blow up and get angry” type).

Artwork: Subjective. I saw the cover after reading the book, so the characters didn’t match the images in my head, but I thought it was a good cover, evoking the concept and feel of the book, but it might imply a more action/adventure story than is actually inside.

Worldbuilding: 3 out of 5. For the most part, their world is ours, but the unique aspects came across as underdeveloped. The Dehmons and their masters, the Oracle, how the Searchers are chosen and by whom–why it seems they always fight in North America–all these things were never explained. The villains seem to be power hungry but two dimensional, only wanting to run the world and enjoy evil because they’re addicted it and its who they are, but perhaps they’ll gain more unique, human ambitions in a later book.

One thing that was explained, however, was that Autumn would lose her power if she lost her virginity, and that bothered me. The guys seemed to have no such restriction, but Autumn was chosen for her purity of soul and body, and if she lost either, she’d no longer be the Keeper. The whole setup implied that virginity is extremely important and that intimacy, marriage, and family sullies a woman, and it made me wonder if this was just a lie passed down from earlier oracles, or how such a generally patriarchial concept worked its way into an order that is run by women, where they are the leaders and source of power? In any case, it frustrated me greatly because it seemed like just the sort of message you wouldn’t want in a young adult novel. Encouraging one to take intimacy seriously and not be casual about such things, absolutely, but imply that it demeans a woman? No way.

Overall Response: 13 out of 20, or an average of 3.25 overall. The novel certainly was interesting, and it made me want to read to the end and find out more about these characters and who Autumn would choose (but then, a good dash of romance gets me through many books), but I felt like it tread down paths that other novels had already taken. So if you’re just looking for a slower paced YA fantasy with romance, I’d recommend it, but if you want something more unique and original, or something with more action and adventure, you should probably look elsewhere.

Erin's Book Reviews: An Author Reviewing Other Authors http://www.erinbedford.com/bookreviews

Souls Discovered is about Autumn, a home schooled free spirit who finds a mysterious necklace in the woods called “The Window.” Soon after Autumn finds it she finds her world turned upside down. Her family lost, a new destiny, and a gorgeous set of seven Searchers to keep her seventeen-year-old hormones on edge.

This book dragged me in from page one. The writer has a great way with words and I didn’t find a dull moment while reading it. While some writers would find it hard to keep every character in the story straight, this author does a fantastic job with not only a few main characters, but EIGHT! Each one of these uniquely described characters has their own personality, their own background, and their own weapons specialty.

Now, Autumn is a typical young girl on the pique of womanhood struggling to find herself and accept her new destiny. It is no surprise when she is thrust into a house full of attractive males that she would find herself falling for one – or two.

So, of course every good love story comes with the forbidden attached and this one is no different. To stay as Keeper and retain her powers Autumn has to remain pure of mind and body. Yep. That means a whole bunch of ‘no we can’t, but I want to so bad’ scenarios where Autumn is faced with the ever prevalent temptation to jump her searches bones, almost to the point where it starts to become a little annoying toward the end of the story.

And without giving any spoilers, the romance between Autumn and one of her searchers keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering how they will be together when facing such impossible odds. Overall, the author did a great job and I can’t wait until the next book!

I give this one 4 bunnies!

When young Autumn unexpectedly discovers a hidden treasure in her midst, she is taken to a world that is like her own in every way but entirely unworldly to all that she has come to know. Forever separated from her family and from the everyday struggles of the mortal world, Autumn is tossed into a new arena among seven strangers with whom she comes to love as her own. In the classic fight against good and evil, Autumn becomes the Keeper of her found treasure and so too, a ‘keeper’ of peace and righteousness, if you will. Her seven Searchers are there to protect her from the malicious Dehmon’s whom sit opposed on the moral spectrum. If they work together, they just might be able to overcome these nefarious evildoers and win the battle of good and evil once and for all. However, should their own inner battles tear them apart, then they are destined to lose not only themselves, but each other. Brock has done a beautiful job scripting this narrative and with her ability to draw the reader into the story, we come to feel every twist and turn in the difficult emotions which her protagonist must overcome. Although, I must forewarn her readers that this book will leave you wanting more and so we are compelled to wait for book two.

Good golly miss molly and oh, my heart!

I-I-I just— I need a moment. Excuse me, please.

Wow, okay, so this one hit me right in the feels. Can I say masterful foreshadowing? Dang!

I should probably back up a bit. I had no idea how this book would go. The beginning was a little jumbled for me (I think to reflect on how jumbled it was for Autumn, the main character). It took me a moment to sort out the narrative. I've been reading a lot of first-person lately and Souls Discovered is told in third-omniscient, so it took me a few chapters to get into the groove of things. That's not to say it I didn't like it (I don't finish books I don't like, and therefore don't review them!) it just took my little brain some time to adjust.

About a quarter of a way in, I got into the groove, and I fell in love. This was a completely new type of urban fantasy, with its own mythos. How Ms. Brock juggled 8 major characters, I'll never know, but she certainly pulled it off!

There's angst, action, and world building galore and I'm so glad I have the whole series already loaded on my Kindle.

Now, about the characters. I loved the checks and balances within the group. It's kind of like a badass snow white and the seven dwarfs, except the men aren't dwarves and the evil queen is actually more of an evil species. The fellas are like a bunch of brother-like prince charmings (though love does spring up, thankfully not between anyone who's actually related! ;) )

Okay, so the ending. I need a few minutes to process. Trust me, it's a doozy! Book 2 is downloaded and I'll dive in after I take a few minutes to breathe and adjust to the real world!

I found this book very, very engaging! Let me start off by talking about the world building. While it is mainly set here, there are some mystical type realms that they travel to. The building and description of each is wonderful! Miranda gives each world and place that the scenes are set beautiful detail. You can almost see yourself there! The plot you ask? It is well paced and sets you up for wanting more. (btw why miranda, that ending why, my soul is crushed) The story here is so much more than the synopsis and is going to be a great series. She executes the plot flawlessly. Everything is tidy and there are no plot holes nor anything too confusing or what the fu-- moments where the reader feels like they are reading something irrelevant. The characters... well first off since everyone is laying claims to these 7 guys that look after Autumn, Im laying claim to Petr... (swoon)... Each character brings their own to the table. Each one has a distinctive voice and is there own character. There are lots of plot twists throughout this book and yet again Im calling you out Miranda for that ending...(zips lips) I wont say what the ending is, but be prepared for a shocker! 5 stars from me!

Snow White and the Seven HOT Guys

All Autumn wants is to figure out how she can afford to attend college to pursue her art degree. While taking her dog for a walk in the woods she comes across a necklace with mystic properties. Autumn's whole world changes when evil dehmons show up and her family is murdered. I sort of picture Snow White, Autumn was chosen as the Keeper because of her purity of heart only she will lose the powers if she loses her virginity. The necklace is a mirror the the dehmons will stop at nothing to get hold of. The seven Searchers that come to her rescue are nothing like the seven dwarves. These young men are charming and hot. Now Autumn has to live with them and try to learn her new role as Keeper.
I absolutely loved getting to know each of these well developed characters in Brock's first installment. Autumn has to deal with each of these young gorgeous men as she grows to know and love them. There is plenty of action with danger all around. Highly recommended.

Souls Discovered was written by Miranda Brock. I love the storyline in this book, it was very original. I loved the characters in this book as well. At first I thought Autumn was going to be the typical damsel in Distress type and was wonderfully surprised when I was wrong. I like that Autumn was surrounded by strong men who cared about her so deeply. I have to say my favorite searcher is Ronan, He is the silly one and I like that. I mean I think the brooding Jason is awesome to but there is just something about a man that can make a girl laugh. I found Petr and Tsukasa to be very endearing and warm. I love Miller and his individual connection to Autumn that was probably one of my favorite parts of this book.

The only negative thing I can say about this book is that I wish when the author had described the searchers that she had done it when Autumn was spending time with them individually instead of in one big paragraph. I felt like it would have been much better visualizing them through Autumn's eyes.

This is the first book I have read by this author, and it won’t be the last. I found this series starter to be well-written, have an interesting plot, and I really liked the characters. I was impressed that while at first the protagonist Autumn was insecure and unsure about anything, she really grew into a mature fighter, someone who was very take-charge. She didn’t just rely on her seven Searchers to fight for her. And, on that subject, while I did have a slight hard time keeping her Searchers apart, I think part of that was we didn’t see much of some of them, and I think the other books will take care of that problem. One other thing that bothered me slightly was that it did take me a little bit to get into the book. However, don’t let that dissuade you from trying this book because one I did, I was hooked. Give it a try; the book was a great young adult/new adult novel! Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.

At first this book did not grab my attention like other books normally do. I had to work my way through some overly descriptive scenes, but once I got pass them I found that I enjoyed the book. The author has a very easy to read writing style which allows you to read the book without distraction. I like the relationships the Keeper has with her Searchers. At first I thought our main girl was going to be a weak character, but she proved me wrong with her strength and determination.

I'm giving this book a 3 only because I felt the overly descriptive scenes detracted a bit from the story. I think as the author continues writing her novels she will only improve in time with this. The author has created a very unique world and I'm interested in reading what will become of the Keeper and her Searchers in book 2.

Honestly I am so mad at myself for not reviewing this book sooner. I had high expectations going in and maintained those high expectations after reading because Souls Discovered did not disappoint! I'm very pleased to say that I can now add another book to my "favorite" reads section.

Let me start by saying I love the cover. It's pretty and it sparkles. I really want a paperback. So I can display it on my bookshelf.

The characters, the epic twists and turns & magic were thoroughly outstanding and I felt myself turning the pages late into the night because I. Couldn't. Stop. Reading.

The author has a wonderful talent in writing and I can't thank her enough for a book well done.

I recommend it wholeheartedly.

This YA Fantasy is a good debut novel by Miranda Brock. It has unique characters and story line that is different from other books in this genre. The characters are developed well but also have room for growth and the story has a good flow. I felt that the first half of the book drug a little for me and started to pick up in the second half. This is written in third person, which isn't my preferred pov, and multi pov. At times it was confusing when the pov changed as there was not a smooth transition from character to character. But there are still plenty of plot twists and surprises to keep you on your toes. As well as an ending that will leave you reeling and have you yelling at Miranda to write book 2 faster. I would recommend this book to any YA fantasy reader.

Oh my... the beginning few chapters I cried like a baby! My heart absolutely broke for Autumn!
I loved the tight knit family the men seem to be.. they're all like the type of big brothers I'd love to have protect me.
The twists and turns are incredible!!
Those last few chapters... oh my gosh I sobbed!!
The last page... holy hell!!!! I need more!
If you can't tell already, I loved this book so hard.
The writing was brilliant, the character developments were flawless and that storyline was Everything! It is definitely one of my favourite reads of this year and I will gladly recommend it to others!
I cannot wait to read more from this author!

I was drawn to this story based on it's unique story line and enjoyed the idea of the window very much. While it was somewhat predictable, I enjoyed the twists and turns and felt they fed into the long-term direction of the series. I did find the writing style unpolished but faster reading and the desire to know how things turned out kept me hooked and engaged until the end. The main two characters were a bit over dramatic for me but the secondary characters easily made up for this and left me wanting more of them. Overall, this was a good, clean YA read great for fans of Twilight or those looking for a fresh take on paranormal themes.

I'm really having trouble putting this into words. That ending! Gah!!! I can't wait to read more. The story started out a lot darker than I thought it would and caught me off guard, but I loved the direction it took. The only reason I took half a star off my rating is that the pace of the story was a tiny bit sporadic. Parts of the story flew by while others dragged a bit, a teeny tiny bit. But there are so many ways this series could go from here!!! I'd love to see more depth and background for the seven guys. And Autumn needs another book to grow her confidence. All in all, great start to a new series!

This necklace somehow leads her to her destiny as the keeper. The seven searchers which happen to be all guys are sent to help her. Personally i couldnt really get into the book it took me alot longer than normal. It is a very well written book though.

Souls Discovered is a great first foray into writing for author Miranda Brock. Good story, plot and characters. It runs the emotional gamut, flowing from one to another continually. It is narrated in third person and multi POV which can get a little confusing so be aware, and dive in to see just what Autumn and her Seekers get up to!

This book will take you on a emotional rollercoaster. Innocent Autumn goes from a quiet sheltered life into a adventured filled with her sexy searchers. Love the strong female lead character Autumn, she grows from a shy girl into a fierce keeper with the help of her searchers. Look forward to seeing where this series takes us next.

**DID NOT FINISH**
While the blurb sounded interesting the actual book had something that didn't really drag me into the story. I found the pacing a tad slow and the POV's jumped without a clear definition of who was talking. At least this is what I though of the book, maybe if the author someday decides to revamp the book those issues could be address. the plot did seem interesting regardless.

Love it!!!

I could not stop reading this book. Oh man!! It moved so fast and had so much emotion. This is one of the most heart tugging books. I am instantly going to start #2. If you are not sure if you should give this your time...you really need too. It's a unique, smile inducing tear jerker. Read it! !

Fun for Fantasy Fans

From the opening sequence to the final paragraph, this is a romantic adventure worth it's weight in magic beans. Stayed up till 5 a.m. To finish because I just didn't want to put it down. Great beginning for a promising series.
