Alien supersoldier Kugah is on the run. He needs the human’s wormhole technology to find a new home, far away from anyone his genetically engineered presence can hurt. Then he meets Amelie. Her gentle, caring nature opens the possibility of a future with someone by his side.
Amelie is too busy being doctor to a spaceship full of pregnant women, she doesn't have any time to regret being alone. But when the passengers begin to show signs of unnaturally rapid ageing after a desperate trip through a wormhole, she has no one else she can rely on other than the strong, silent alien. The things she’s starting to feel for him must be just a product of the fact that they could soon be the only two left alive on the ship.
Their species aren’t even compatible. They couldn’t possibly be falling in love.
Reckless Remedy is book 4 in the Barren Planet Romance series. Each book can be enjoyed alone, but they are best read in the following order:
Rinelle Grey is no stranger to alternate lifestyles. She grew up in a variety of different homes, including a riverside shack with no electricity or running water, and even a tent. She and her sister spent their childhood chasing goats, climbing trees, eating peas and corn out of their mother’s vegetable garden, and occasionally rushing to get their correspondence school work in on time. Despite the difficulties of this lifestyle, she wouldn’t swap it for all the luxuries in the world (though she is rather fond of her running hot water and indoor plumbing now!)
She met her husband in ‘Family Therapy’, an elective they were both taking as part of their psychology degrees. It took several years for them to get together, in fact, their roleplaying characters got together before they did!
They married on the beach at sunrise in 2002, two months after Rinelle popped the question.
Although she had always loved to write, it wasn’t until her daughter was about eighteen months old that Rinelle started writing seriously. Probably not the best stage in terms of having spare time! And time only became scarcer when her daughter gave up her day sleep six months later. But by then, Rinelle had well and truly caught the writing bug, finding time somehow to continue with her passion. Her fast typing speed learnt from spending way too much time chatting on IRC, and the investment in an iPad when they came out, helped immensely.
Rinelle now lives on acreage with her husband and homeschooled daughter. In her spare time, she sells stock photography through an online site to support her family, and is hoping that writing will be able to add to that.
She loves to receive e-mails at [email protected], or follow her on facebook or twitter.
When Kerit brought the alien back with him to the Resolution, he knew he would be facing the wrath of his brother and captain of their ship, Tyris. But Kugah had been in danger and was unable to leave the planet as his ship had crashed. Though his black armour and blank expression was enough to cause fear, Kerit knew Kugah wouldn’t hurt them. And when Amelie, the doctor caring for the large number of people on the ship met him as well, she sensed he wasn’t as ferocious as he seemed. He was certainly intimidating – his sheer size and obvious strength were there for everyone to see – but Amelie agreed with Tyris that she would test Kugah to learn more about him.
The Resolution had to flee through a wormhole in space which the engineers were able to create; but the desperate journey would have repercussions throughout the majority of the passengers. As each person showed signs of premature aging, even the rapid onset of dementia, Amelie didn’t know what she was up against. But would the knowledge she did have, along with the help of Kugah, who couldn’t even speak the language, be able to stave off the inevitable? Would their journey to find a new planet; one they could finally call home, be halted before it had even begun?
Reckless Remedy by Aussie author Rinelle Grey is the 4th in the Barren Planet series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it as much as I have the first three. Tension and intrigue rippled through the story; the rush to escape and its consequences; the fear of the unknown and how to overcome it and a tentative romance between two people who were nothing alike – all together an entertaining read and one I highly recommend. I would also recommend they are read in order of publication: #1 Reckless Rescue, #2 Reckless Rebellion, #3 Reckless Recon, #4 Reckless Remedy which is, in my opinion, important for character growth.
With thanks to the author for this ARC digital copy to read in exchange for my honest review.
In many ways, this book is more medical drama than either science fiction or romance. Dr. Amelie Benton is scrambling for solutions when the passengers of the spaceship Resolution, which is filled with pregnant women and fleeing colonists, encounters physical phenomena relating to ageing after passing through a wormhole. As the only doctor serving the large contingent, she is bombarded with a rapidly failing crew and hampered by her obvious friendship with the only alien among them, the scary and sinister-looking Kugah.
The book picks up immediately after the end of book three, Reckless Recon. Several characters from the previous three books are integral to the story in this fourth installment. Although, the book ends with a satisfactorily conclusion, there could be room for more stories in the Barren Planet universe (yes, please, Ms. Grey).
Given the challenges of the untested wormhole technology, the lack of information on Kugah's DNA and species, and the unknowns related to the wormhole affect, Amelie is remarkably lucky with her guesses. Liking science fiction requires the reader to suspend disbelief, and there was a whole lot of suspending going on in this fourth book. Regardless, I liked the new twist on medical emergencies and the light lesson in genetics, offered in space no less. Truthfully, the medical ramifications of space travel is an angle I haven't read much in science fiction romance, so I thought it was brave and refreshing.
The romance is very slow moving, and in this way book four is dissimilar to the previous three books in the series. At 66% in, Kugah is still only thinking about hugging Amelie. In addition, I found his internal musing to be simplistic, especially for an adult male who was highly trained as a scientist and later adapted for combat purposes. On the other hand, their interactions are sweet and species incompatibility is acknowledged. But in the tradition of speculative science fiction, Ms. Grey is able to offer an imaginative solution for these inter-species lovers.
The author did such a good job! The book has a deep plot as it tells the story of Dr Benton and Kugah developing a relationship. This alien is intelligent and even tho he tries to stay detached is very caring. He gets to know the Dr as things go wrong as they always do. Not only is it a wonderful story of love but also a story about acceptance between different races. Hating someone because they are different and letting it govern your life is strong in this story. I love Kugah. He is so giving. He saves the Dr and the ship too many times. I loved this book!! I think it might be my favorite of all the stories in this series. I could give you a recap but I think you should just read the book instead.
This book had the potential to be 4 star but was spoilt by the incessant need of the author to waffle on and on with unnecessary descriptions that just left me bored.
I just ended up skimming 50% over these pointless boring and superfluous portions.
The story itself was good and I only read the book cos o wanted to know what happened with the H.
BTW he's an alien, a different species he would never refer to himself as a 'man' derived from human an earth condtruct ffs!!
At times it felt she forgot she was writing a sci gi book set on other worlds
I won't read anymore of this author, I just dont like her long winded writing style.
I️ absolutely loved this book. It was awesome to be able to find out more about Kugah, a black armored, dangerous looking alien. His background broke my heart. And I️ love Amelie, I️ was so happy that she was one of the main characters in this book.
This book has it all, adventure, dangerous and exciting life altering situations, as well as a little mystery and lastly romance.
I received a copy of Reckless Remedy by Rinelle Grey in exchange for an honest review. This is the fourth book in the Barren Planet series, but can be read as a stand alone book. Note: this review contains spoilers! There is no easy start for the characters of this book as a ship full of expectant parents and newly made parents tries to get away from the government that wants to arrest them and abort the unborn babies. Our rebels, however, have one thing the government doesn't have: wormhole technology. Unfortunately, it isn't that safe, and thus begins the saga of the rebels looking for a new home. Fully in the camp of "what doesn't kill us makes us stronger," the rebels battle the old government, radiation, growing old way too fast, black holes, limited resources, and fear to fight for a home where they will be safe and able to raise their families in peace. One lone doctor, one transformed alien, and a handful of crew lead them on this quest. But it isn't just the fight for a home that draws the reader into this book. The characters are well developed and for the most part have the determination, love, hope, and forgiveness that makes an ordinary group of people into something more. They are there for each other as they battle their own demons and illnesses. They even eventually realize what the doctor has know all along: that the alien isn't as much of an alien as he seems. Amidst all of the battles there is still time for a sweet love story of two people who know that a person's character is much more important than what they look like. That love makes the fight easier. In spite of all the things that go wrong, it is their love and commitment that will save them. It is a lesson that we too need to learn today.

Just got done reading all four books in two days, I even had trouble sleeping before finishing the book I was currently reading. Great storyline, world building and character development. Each couple in the individual books were great and I enjoyed reading about them and their trials and tribulations they went through to get their H E A. I highly recommend this book and series and author. I also plan to checkout more by this author. I purchased the first book and read the rest on my Kindle unlimited but I may purchase copies for my re-read file. Happy reading, SQ.
I really enjoyed these books. The struggles all the people on the spaceship Resolution have made them into a family. Not all families get along all the time and they tend to get on each others nerves when they are in enclosed spaces...
Great action, awesome drama, great little love story thrown in. Enjoyed this series.
