The ocean isn't the only thing that'll be wet tonight...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Her world is about to be turned upside down
When Alexia Colten is called home to the ocean-side village of Jaffrey’s Cove all she expects is a sad, short walk down memory lane. Instead, she’s gifted her grandmother’s dolphin-etched medallion. Suddenly, all the gorgeous men of the village are fawning over her while she’s blindsided by intense sexual cravings. Something mysterious is happening—and Alexia is thrust into a sensual, exciting world she’s never imagined.
They’ll give everything they have to help her survive
Cousins Joshua and Anthony Marley were content to live quietly in their secret merfolk community, but now that their childhood friend Alexia is back, all bets are off. The medallion that marks her as their next potential leader also marks her as a target for every ambitious male in town. Joshua and Anthony are determined to be the two lovers she’ll need to take to be able to shift fully into all her merfolk forms—human, dolphin and fire.
Convincing her to accept their help is going to be an exhilarating ride on the wild side Alexia never knew she had.
---
Warning: this book is intended for mature audiences as it contains sexual adventures in and out of the water including ménage a trois, and a really hot situation in a kitchen that doesn’t involve the stove. If that’s not your thing, don’t read this book. And yes, merfolk and dolphins are sexy. Really.
Alexia Colton had spent every summer since she was fourteen visiting her grandmother in the charming seaside town of Jaffrey's Cove, until adulthood and the need to work kept her away. She loves the ocean, and always felt a sense of peace and home there, and was always enchanted by the dolphins that often play in the surf just off the shore. When her grandmother, a once strong and vibrant woman, now feeble and needing help to move into an assisted living facility, calls Alexia sounding frantic, Alexia rushes to her gram's side to get her settled. Sharing this time with her grandmother, whom Alexia can tell is starting to decline in health and mental acuity, is invaluable to her, and when Victoria offers her granddaughter her seaside home and a stunning family heirloom, Alexia takes the necklace but declines on the house. Her work is in the middle of the country, after all.
Soon Alexia is having erotic dreams of the boy, now a man, she'd once met as a child, making love to her in a cavern she's dreamed of her entire life. And her gram is acting stranger and stranger...and significantly less feeble than she'd been when Alexia first arrived. The ocean is calling to her and her body is burning with unfamiliar hungers. Alexia's world is shifting and she'll soon realize that she's not as human as she'd always thought, mermen are real, and the dolphins she's loved her whole life are all citizens of Jaffrey's Cove. And Alexia herself is the new matriarch of their pod, with two gorgeous and dedicated consorts, the cousins Joshua and Anthony, to love her body, heart, and mind for as long as she chooses. What's not to love about life changes like that??
I don't need to spend much time on the erotica aspects of Tidal Wave. The sex is sizzling hot and extremely well done. Arend manages a nice blend of emotion driven sexuality and explicit sex that's extremely satisfying and too rare in erotica romance. I also have to give her credit for how deftly she managed to keep the sex scenes (of which there are several...it's erotica, after all) from completely overshadowing or eclipsing the plot and character development. That's rather a nifty accomplishment in a novella length story, which tends to suffer in those areas to begin with. Also, I'm very very picky about my reading choices when it comes to menage a trois erotica, when I read it at all. It's not a particular favorite of mine and I rarely find menage done in a way that appeals to my tastes. Tidal Wave mastered that for me. I was exceptionally pleased with all sexual aspects of the story.
The other parts had a few bumps of a less erotic kind. This isn't the first story or series I've read by Vivian Arend. I've read several of the Granite Lake Wolves, as well, so this wasn't too much of a surprise because I've had this issue with her as an author before. Arend tends to master the sex and the emotion of a story in very short order, but the plot and characterizations sometimes have issues, as Tidal Wave does. Some of that is the nature of the beast in a novella. I like the way Arend writes and I'm greedy, so I want there to be more meat to the story, but to have more meat you have to either sacrifice some of the sex or write a book. While I have high hopes that Arend will eventually write a full length novel, with her novellas, she has a tendency to skimp a bit on fully developing the mythos of the world she's built in each story. In Tidal Wave that was a particular shame, because I would've loved learning more about the merpeople and spent more time with them in their dolphin form. I found the concept behind the plot to be fresh and unique and that's so rare it should be fully explored.
There were a couple of plot holes and characterization blips that got ignored in this story. Why was Joshua sent away every summer Alexia returned to Jaffrey's Cove after the first time they met and shared a sweet kiss when she was fourteen? He wondered but there was never an answer given. Why was he treated so dismissively by his brothers? Why did Alexia dream of the cavern before ever going there and before receiving the medallion? No one ever had before. Those holes were frustrating.
There was no explanation for Joshua's sudden calm acceptance of his cousin vying for Alexia's affections when earlier in the story he was quite adamant about being her only. The quick turn around in Anthony's case, from him telling Joshua he wasn't really interested in answering Alexia's call to being all gung ho about consorting with her was addressed, but in a cursory way at best that felt unsatisfying. Michael's plot thread was a very nice conflict and it added some depth to the story, but it wasn't as fleshed out as I would've liked, lacked a real solid motivation given the defined mythos of the pod, and the resolution was lackluster. Victoria was a nice secondary character, but she wasn't used as much as she could've been and she sort of left her granddaughter with very little understanding of her people. You'd think the former matriarch would care a little more than just passing off a necklace before disappearing.
I know it sounds like I'm being picky, but it's frustrating to find that great blend of erotic sexuality and original mythos with an intriguing plot and totally likable characters...then have a bunch of little issues through the story. None of that made me dislike Tidal Wave by any means. I hope I don't give that impression. I enjoyed the story...it's just I wish there had been a bit more. I know; I'm greedy.
This was a new to me author and my first foray into 'water' shifters, and what a delightful read.
I loved the characters and enjoyed Gram's down to earth manner. The world building was wonderful and the ménage scenes exquisite!!
This was a pretty good quick light read. Lots of smoking sex. I did finish it off in one night. Would have liked a little more suspense, but over all I did enjoy it. Off to read the next one :)
Love this book
Joshua has been waiting for Alexia for years. Alexia as spent summers with her gram and now she is called to her gram under false pretenses. Anthony has had a crush on Alexia since were young. Now he and Joshua have to explain what she was thrown into and swear to protect and support her in her new roll as matriarch of the pod. Will they be able to keep her safe even from their older cousin? Can they help her prove she is ready to take over as matriarch and chose who she wants by her side?
Its a little short but its still very good. Its strange how her mom didn't get anything but yet she did. I wonder if it skips generations or it was just a fluke. She had every rt 2 pissed at her grams 4 lieing 2 her but in a way its understandable after everything she found out. Its really awesome that they can turn into different things. Even though she has 2 protect a new pod she has found things easier 2 deal with by the necklace guiding her and her true loves. I can't wait 4 more asap!!
Different shifter story.
Not often do you get merfolk stories, but to have a secondary nature too was intriguing.
Loved sneaky Gram and how she manoeuvred everyone into position.
Though I liked Alexia, Joshua & Anthony as a triad, I just felt the beginning of their relationship was rushed.
Understandable under the circumstances, so I would have liked a better epilogue and more background.
Pity Michael was not dealt with in this book.
Read through kindle unlimited.
This was interesting with the dolphin shifters but it was hard for me to wrap my head around all the stuff they got up to underwater. It was an enjoyable story though and I will see if I can get any of the other books in the series so that I can continue.
Interesting
Different paranormal romance from that which I’m used to but interesting concept. Liked the dithering and interfering gran and the volatile lawyer who was annoying and bullying. Good read.
Memorable Scenes:
- The flashback scene to when Alexia first meets Joshua > so sweet and endearing
Alexia Colten is a city girl but she has always been drawn to the sea and dolphins. It turns out this is not without reason. She is the Keeper, holder of the medallion and the heart of the merfolk and the next matriarch and leader of the merfolk pod in Jaffrey Cove. Alexia has a sense of humor and a sense of justice. There’s also a simmering sensuality and a backbone beneath the shy, reserved veneer. I liked how strong and decisive she was. Though not a fan of flashbacks, I thoroughly enjoyed Alexia's little trip down memory lane in the beginning of the book. It was nicely set up and was a very functional flashback that helped provide a clear back-story for her, a background for the romance and really worked for the world building.
Joshua Marley is an artist and the youngest of the many Marley brothers and cousins. As the youngest and the artistic one he’s always felt out of the loop. This doesn’t improve when he breaks a few merfolk traditions by first touching (kissing) Ally without permission when they were youths and then again by making sure the other unattached merfolk men don't feel and hear her summoning when she dons the medallion and "activates" the magic of it to summon all the unmated male dolphin shifters...Joshua is impulsive and sometimes leaps before he thinks but in his impulsive ways he was also endearing. He’s selfless yet ready to take what he thinks belongs to him and he can be pretty stubborn.
The third in this ménage is Anthony. He’s Joshua's closest friend and a high school teacher. Anthony is always the peacemaker ready to step in when things threaten to get out of hand. He is calming, caring and gentle and I really liked him. I found it remarkable how first Joshua was the lead male in the threesome and then almost unnoticed, Anthony took over that role in the course of the story. I liked that because Anthony did seem the more mature and controlled of the two. I wasn’t quite taken with Joshua in the beginning as his impulsiveness made him come across a bit immature and acting up like a stubborn youth.
Though I really loved the story, I did find the pace to be a bit slow and I missed the trademark humor I've grown to adore in Vivian Arend's books. Later, when I had finished the book and was commenting about this on Twitter she told me that this was the first or second book she’d ever written so I’ll just assume she hadn’t found that witty, fun voice yet that I do enjoy in her later books. This being said, she absolutely delivered with the world building and hot ménage. And I loved that Alexia questioned the sexual urges that were suddenly coming over her and that she didn't mindlessly accept it.
With TIDAL WAVE Vivian Arend introduced me to a new-to-me kind of shifters: dolphins. And, contrary to the selkies (seals) I once read a story about, this type of shifters did work for me. TIDAL WAVE is a wonderful story with some intricate world building combined with hot erotic scenes, well-drawn characters that intrigued to no end and even a little action in the plot. So if you’re looking for a quick, satisfying paranormal read that for once isn’t about witches, vampires or werewolves, TIDAL WAVE is a great pick for your next read.
Tidal Wave is set in the small seaside town of Jaffrey’s Cove where the majority of the residents are merfolk. Alexia’s grandmother is the leader of the pod but she’s tired and ready to pass the task on to Alexia. She gives her a beautiful necklace but doesn’t reveal the medallion’s secrets to Alexia.
Alexia has spent her summers in Jaffrey’s cove for years and has always felt connected to it. Now she is back to help her grandmother get settled into a new home. She is drawn to the sea but doesn’t understand its call. She has been having dreams for years of a young boy she met her first summer there, Joshua but now he’s all grown up.
Joshua has been in love with Alexia since she agreed to let him kiss her. After that summer, he was sent away when she would come to visit. Now he is grown up and determined to make Alexia his.
One night during a storm, Alexia is drawn to the ocean and a chain of events is set off that can’t be stopped.
Alexia is confused and hurt when she finds out the secret of the necklace and what her role in the future of Jaffrey’s Cove will be. She can’t believe her gram has kept this secret from her all these years. She is shocked by her behavior with Joshua and Anthony. She is drawn to them and can’t walk away from either one.
Joshua knows what he wants and intends to go after it. Everyone discounted him because he kept to himself but what they didn’t realize was he was biding his time until Alexia returned. Anthony is the quite one, the peace maker. He had no plans of helping rule the pod, until he met Alexia and all plans changed.
I love the interaction between the main characters. I am proud of Alexia for handling Michael when he forced himself on her. Gram is one of my favorite characters. She has a lot of spunk and doesn’t take no for an answer. She is proud of Alexia and doesn’t want her to feel embarrassed or ashamed for the way she is feeling.
Tidal Wave pulled me in from the moment I picked it up. The story flowed effortlessly with a great plot and smoking hot sex scenes. I read it in one sitting and can’t wait for Whirlpool to come out. I give Tidal Wave 4 flaming hearts.
One word that describe this story… HOT!
I am a huge fan of Vivian Arend’s Granite Lake Werewolves series and was really excited when she sent me this other one of hers. Specially since it is about a new sort of shifter and from the blurb I could see that a lot of hotness was to be had hehe
The Forces of Nature is about Merfolk, men and women that shift into dolphins. How freaking cool is that? I love dolphins and it was great to read about a different kind of mythology, ona that I hadn’t seen before.
Tidal Wave tells the story of Alexia, who doesn’t know she is part of a merfolk clan, but when she goes help out her supposedly senile Grandmother, finds out that not only she is a dolphin shifter but she is set to be the next clan leader.
The proximity to the sea and the clan start affecting her hormones and giving out signs to the single males of the clan. She need to choose one or more to help her body get the hormones she needs to be able to shift.
When you think nothing can be sexier than a Hot dolphin shifter, you realize that reading about Alexia’s budding relationship with Joshua and Anthony definitely puts you your place.
I have to say, WOW! Tidal Wave brought out the HOT and got me all hot and bothered. I literally blushed at times and had to take a little brake.
If you enjoy Paranormal Erotica, you really need to check this series out! The second book, “Whirlpool” comes out in August, and I’ll be reading and reviewing it soon =)
I am really coming to love this author, I like how she picks animals not normally picked as shifters and how the heroes of the stories aren't always alpha males. This story continues in that vein.
I really liked Alexia, she was thrown into an odd situation with no warning and I thought she did well with it, especially as so much of it went against what she knew.
I loved the idea of dolphin shifters and how their community was centered around one person, the keeper, and how she choose her consorts.
Joshua and Anthony were the perfect men for Alexia, both not really what they seemed and both had a rough streak when Alexia was threatened. I was glad to see that they were able to work things out between the 3 of them and the pod.
I look forward to reading more in this series.
I enjoyed this story - it was unique! Alexia Colten used to visit her grandmother in Jaffrey's Cove when she was young. She's been called back to help her grandmother move, but instead of finding a frail, old woman, Alexia is introduced to a secret society of merfolk she never knew existed. And she's a big part of it! Joshua Marley has loved Alexia since they were teens and wants to play an important role in her new life - as do his brothers! This book was very different, with hot shifter dolphins and merfolk, sexy MFM romps in the ocean and on land and some suspense with a Marley brother who isn't happy with Alexia's choices. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
3.5 stars -- GAH! Stupid review got deleted again...it was my fault, but it's still annoying. This was a hot little read. Great naughty scenes. LOVED Anthony. Joshua was on and off...I loved him in the beginning, but then I was a little bit less sure about him. He was still a good guy, but just more wishy washy or something. I think it needed more backstory, or more fleshing out...or just...something. I don't know. It left me not quite satisfied.
On a side note, it was extremely surreal to read that Alexia grew up in Saskatoon, as I'm from Saskatchewan originally.
M/F/M menage paranormal erotic romance with the unique twist that the characters the story centers around are dolphin shifters.
Have not read a merfolk tale in a long while and this one was filled with interesting bits and pieces of lore concerning these particular shifters.
As first book in the series it also firmly established Alexia, Anthony and Joshua in their positions as the new leader and her chosen male lovers.
A well written erotic short-story of paranormal love based around a pod of shape-shifting dolphins. The pace is steady as it climbs toward a climactic conclusion of graphic ménage à trois romance. The characters, despite their shape shifting, paranormal existence are well developed and believable. This made for a nice afternoon delight as it's short enough to read in one sitting. A good beginning to an erotic series.
Holy hotness
This novel kept me in an aroused state through the whole novel. It also had a great plot with menfolk abound. I kind of wish there was a bit more history about the folk and how everything came about, but sometimes we just need a read a sexy novel to take our brain away from the present. The next novel looks pretty awesome too. Definitely a recommendation for anyone who craves the two guys and a girl trio, no man on man action :).
This is the first dolphin shifter book I've encountered but boy did I like it! Sure you think about dolphins being very intelligent but when you start to think that they are shifting from humans and you have those emotions and feelings from their human side - mmm mmm good!
Whew! So much steam tied up in one short book! Shifting Mer-people are a new genre for me as well. Tying a little dolphin biology into the story just made it that much more s3xy.
Short, sweet, erotic and paranormal. There you go. Enjoy!
Wow
Who knew the ocean and it's inhabitants could be so hot. Meet a young lady with a secret she doesn't even know. Then meet the men who help her figure it all out. I'm surprised the water didn't all turn to steam .
