A thrilling new series featuring seven immortal Spartan warriors protecting mankind— and confronting passion along the way...
Eternity has become a prison for Ajax Petrakos. Centuries after he and his Spartan brothers made their bargain for immortality, Ajax struggles to maintain his warrior's discipline. His only source of strength is his hope that he will soon meet the woman once foretold to him--the other half of his soul, Shay Angel.
Ajax searches for his destined mate on the haunted streets of modern-day Savannah, but he isn't the first to find her. Shay, the youngest of a powerful demon-hunting clan, can see the monsters that stalk the steamy Southern nights--an ability that draws the deadly attention of Ajax's worst enemy. As Shay and Ajax race to solve a chilling prophecy--one that could spell Ajax's death if they don't succeed--a fated passion arises, threatening to sweep away everything in its path.

After the movie "300" it was really only a matter of time till the Spartans would appear in a paranormal romance book.... lol! Ajax and seven of his fellow warriors (including King Leonidas) originate from Sparta, an ancient Greek town and were fighting on the Thermopylae to defend their homeland against the Persians. After they were all killed Ares the god of war made them an offer either to go to Elysium or go back to the world as immortal warriors to protect mankind from every form of evil. They would be given greater strength and the ability to take the form of hawks. Of course they took Ares´ offer.. After two thousand years of loneliness Ajax is still waiting for the woman destined to be his mate for eternity. When he´s sent to Savannah to resue Shay Angel a young woman from his old opponent the evil Djinn Eblas he is attracted to her at once... could she really be the woman he was waiting for his whole life? The book had a promising premise and I liked reading it but I couldn´t connect with Shay Angel I admit. I really have no patience with heroines who have a debate on principles with their knights in shining armors when the hordes of hell are hot on their heels or if the hero/heroine can only think about sex in a dangerous life threatening situation. For me that´s just ridiculous and wide off the mark.. Well, unfortunately Shay had many TSTL-moments in this novel and I really couldn´t warm towards her although later on in the book I thought her more mature and she showed some character growth. But it didn´t help in the end – she´s just not one of my all-time favorite heroines. And Ajax our hero? I could have lived with his wings and the talons but all the feathers and downs even on a certain male body part was just a huge turn off – at least for me! The story and subplots were quite interesting, with Ares playing his own little game with his spartans, the beginning love story between the Oracle (the spartans counselor and connection to the gods) and King Leonidas, the battles between Ajax and Eblas, the story and secrets of Shay´s family and I still think the book is entertaining to read but not really outstanding in the paranormal romance genre. I´m interested enough to give the second book in the series "Red Kiss" a try which will tell River´s story – hopefully with a heroine more to my taste..
Ugh ugh ugh!!!... This was one hard book to finish. The whole idea for a series is very good!, Spartans who became immortals to fight demon kind… I like it, I really do. Jax is a great character, I kinda like him too, even if he’s bipolar and not very reliable on the protecting thing.
And that’s it, that’s all the good stuff about this book… nothing more!
Shay is the stupidest, useless heroine ever!, the whole ‘pal!’ and ‘dude’ thing just were laaaame. I think it was a family thing ‘cause she and her brothers were usually all over the place: shouting, crying, smiling, yes, no, up, down, left, right!... make up your freaking mind! And her jokes… not funny at all. The writing is terrible, I got lost sooo many times… at some point I figured out that that’s how it was supposed to be… I think it was to make the story more interesting and not so predictable. It didn’t work, most of the time it just didn’t make sense.
The other thing that bothered me to no end was the continual explaining of everybody’s thoughts: I’m hungry, I’m going to eat a burger, I wonder where should I go.. oh no, but I’m on a diet so I should have a salad, yes, with chicken and some croutons… oh no, croutons are a no-go too… oh the hell with it, I’m going to burger king for a guacamole-bacon with giant fries and a diet coke for good measure! It’s not funny, it’s not interesting… it just shows lack of imagination for writing a book, I want action, not reading about the rambling minds of the characters.
I rolled my eyes so much I thought they were going to stay that way.
If you like paranormal romance and mooned over the movie "300" about King Leonidas and his Spartans, then you should really enjoy "Red Fire". Deidre Knight introduces readers to a world where King Leonidas and six of his fiercest warriors were given a choice by the god Ares to continue to Elysium or be transformed in various ways into warriors for humanity. A big DUH as to which one they chose. For over 2500 years, they have fought the demons to keep mankind safe while slowly realizing that their transformation has also made them toys of Ares. The oracle of Delphi also gave each warrior a foreseeing with a rhyme and the name of the woman who will be his love and complete his soul...if he can wait and win her. This first book is the story of a world-weary Ajax.
Ajax is tired. Tired of struggling against demons; tired of answering to King Leonidas, the Oracle, and Ares; tired of waiting for his promised woman; and even tired of the endless women he plays with. But his ennui soon disappears when he heads to Savannah, Georgia on his latest mission and runs into the woman he's been waiting for...and his most bitter ancient enemy.
Shay returned to Savannah for her mother's funeral and to find out the truth of a recent letter raising questions about her parentage. Her family's history is one of fighting off the demons that plague mankind...but always in secret and always only the men of the family are gifted with the ability to see and feel those demons. So why is it that Shay has recently acquired those same abilities? And who in the heck is the 'angel' with the black wings who keeps coming on to her? If he's not an angel, then just what is he and what does he want with her...other than the obvious?
As with any 'first book' in a series, there's a ton of world-building going on. History, reality, character introductions, etc take a lot of ink and I sometimes found myself wanting to skip a few pages to get on with the 'action'. So I'd have to say I noticed a lack of 'smoothiness' (my own vocabulary) regarding pacing. The plot is an interesting one and I like the idea of the brave few being rewarded for their sure and certain sacrifice to save others. However, just as in real life, sometimes rewards can turn a bit sour and that's certainly true for Ajax. I didn't quite buy Shay's brothers' reasoning for refusing to allow her access to their family history; especially in the face of the ongoing events. So although I did enjoy 'parts' of the plot, I thought there were more than a few weak spots and/or holes that needed to be filled.
The sex scenes were hot and certainly more than NC17; some of them also happen when he is partially or fully 'transformed' so if that icks you out, beware. What woman doesn't love the idea that a man will wait forever (or close enough) for the one woman meant for him? If 2500 years doesn't count, well...how long is an eon anyway? The relationship stays rocky for most of the book and I did get irritated by a few TSTL (too stupid to live) actions on the part of the heroine. Sure, why not go to the graveyard where you've already been attacked once by demons...ALONE!?
Did I enjoy reading this book? Yes. Will I read the next one, "Red Kiss" (which is already out, Jun09)? Most likely. Will I continue the rest of the series? I'll have to reserve judgement and see how Deidre Night's next one goes before I answer that one.
Shapeshifting Spartan Warriors Become the Latest 'Immortal Brotherhood' to Hit the Shelves this Year
Okay, so I never saw the movie `300' but I've heard enough about the courageous Spartan warriors that I found author Knight's concept for Red Fire intriguing. Spartan Captain Ajax, Ajax's slave River, King Leonidas and four other of their fellow fallen Spartan warriors were intercepted on their way to the Elysian Fields by the war god Ares, who offered a them eternal life in exchange for their vow to serve as protectors of mankind.
Though the concept was interesting and there were parts of the book that I liked, the actual execution of Red Fire was really mixed. Even though I loved Knight's Parallel series, this book had pacing problems that made it hard to finish and it ending up being just okay. I realize that first book of a new paranormal romance series always has the challenge of introducing the cast, and explaining the mythos of the story's world, in addition to developing the relationship between the leads. But the romance between the leads, Ajax and Shay, was the least interesting part of the story and in between the battles their page time really slogs along. Shay has some real potential with her emerging `huntress' powers along with her hidden legacy, but it isn't really explored or exploited here - maybe in future books? The whole business about Ajax being unable to keep from shifting into his inhuman hawk form when he was aroused added an odd bent to the love scenes, I wouldn't have had problems with him manifesting just the wings, but the talons, down-covered nether regions, and the hawkish shreiking was just a bit too much.
Far better developed, or maybe just more appealing, was the setup for the future romance of King Leonidas and the blue-haired pixish Oracle who has longingly watched the King for years unseen and unseeable and who, now at long last, is able to touch and talk to him. Also showing potential for future books is the achingly lonely former slave River, who even after thousands of years, feels like he doesn't truly belong to the Spartan gang, especially - and I found this quite weird - since he shapeshifts into weapons when the other guys get to be cool hawkmen. And an additional glimer of promise for the future books, Knight is weaving relationships between the members of the rest of her Spartan cast including two of Ajax's brothers and another warrior who has some issues with River.
The bottom line is that, even though I had quite a few issues with Red Fire, I will probably give Knight's Spartans one more try when River's book comes out - there is still hope for the series if Knight can work past her series' birthing pains.
Ajax is not happy with his immortal existence. Very understandable in my opinion. 2000 years of battling the bad and saving mankind but no real meaning of life for himself. He loves his Spartan brothers and he adores his “mission” but he misses something, or better said someone. The oracle prophecied him a soulmate but that was for over 2000 years and really: no-one can wait so long without getting a little impatient.
Shay just lost her mother and now has to face the problems left concerning family and their business. She lives in a world of demon hunters- every man in their bloodline has this calling and battles the creatures of the night. Only problem is she would like to do the same but the girls aren’t allowed to and what’s more important she shouldn’t be able to see the demons at all. The whole thing gets more confusing when she gets this letter stating that she’s adopted and has the ability to see demons cuz she doesn’t really belong to her family. Now she doesn’t know who to believe and what to do about all this. They both get together when Shay is attacked of a horde of demons and Jax tries to save her and realizes who he finally has found.
Deidre's writing is full of love and passion. Every time I read her I feel like I could live of her words alone. The characters are complex, sometimes quirky but always lovable, the world is wonderful and full of different facets. I love the way she throws us in the middle of the action and let us see the whole story through the eyes of many characters. In this book is so much story but I never felt overwhelmed. The end was a little predictable but perhaps I just guesses right.
Okay, I'm only halfway through this book and if I weren't trying to check "R" off on my A-Z Reading Challenge, I would stop now. This has to be one of the most asinine (to me) plots EVER. I don't know why I roll my eyes so much. I'm all about vampires and werehunters, but having sex with a man with wings and feathers on his tummy, that's just a little too much for me. And the dialogue, all the emotions behind the words, it's just silly.
Alright, so here's the problem, despite the fact that I am not at all interested in beastiality, now that I've finished this book, I am invested in the story.
I was so relieved to be done, but I want to know what happened to River. I want to see the relationship between the King and the Oracle continue to develop. The King sort of reminds me of the Blind King from BDB, sort of.
I officially have whiplash. The dialogue, the scene changes, the scene descriptions... I couldn't keep track. The protagonists would go from being totally in and committed, to... I can't do this, I can't go on, in the space of ONE paragraph. How does that happen? The humor seemed really forced, and the men came off as emotional to the extreme which read as trying to hard to show the soft center in the midst of all that brawn. I couldn't even finish the book, which bummed me out, because that hardly ever happens to me, and the premise of this series sounded really good. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.
New series by Deidre Knight. Honestly, this is my first book by her that I've read and I must admit, this is a great story!
It's original, a great mix between hero and heroine. Too many of these paranormal romances feel the same. Deidre has managed to weave a great story around two unique individuals and let's face it, the hero's alter-shape...HOT! It was original and fast paced without losing the characterization.
Spartans! How cool is that?!? A bit of a twist on the usual idea and a lot of fun. I really like these guys Though Deidre isn't in my top tier of authors (that reserved for Ward, Kenyon, Frost, Cole and a few others), she is definitely in my second tier of fovorites (authors I follow closely, strongly recommend and would read before most others-except those very top notch 10 or so).
Ajax Petrakos is a Spartan. When the Spartans lost their epic battle, Jax and six other of his brethren were given the choice by Ares to become immortal and continue to serve their country and be protectors. They accepted and now it is a couple of thousand years later. Ajax struggles with his immortal life, not sure that he wants to continue with this existence. The Oracle has foretold a battle, a mission; one that Jax must complete alone. She has also foretold of his one great love, Shayanna Angel, but he has no idea when or if he will ever find her. The one with whom he must battle is a nasty demon by the name of Elblas (or Sable, as he likes to be called). Sable destroyed Jax's life long ago, so Jax got his revenge by way of removing his once beautiful wings. Sable is very bitter and angry about the fact that he is no longer beautiful, so he comes after Jax full force. But Jax has finally found his Shay, the love of his life. Now that he's found her, can he protect her so that they can be together always?
My opinion: Right away when I started reading this book, I knew I would like it. Anyway that knows me can attest that I LOVE the movie 300. So when I found out this book was about Spartan warriors I was all in! When Jax was given immortality, he was also given abilities. He is able to change into a hawk-like creature with big beautiful wings; this shape-shifting is something he has always had trouble controlling. The way he is described in this book, he sounds absolutely gorgeous! Of course, every time they mention Leonidas, all I can think about is the movie and so when I read the book all I can picture is Gerard Butler...which is definitly not a bad thing! I liked Shayanna, she was very tough. I hated the way her brothers kept the family secrets from her, I didn't blame her for getting so frustrated with them. Especially when the information was so crucial! It really was a special moment when Jax finally realizes he has found her, you could feel the love he already felt for her even though this was the first time they had met face to face. And although it took awhile for Shay to be able to fully trust him, you could tell she felt connected to him instantly too. There was a part where they are talking later on in the book that actually made me tear up a little, but I'm not giving anything away! You'll just have to read it for yourself!!
Genre: Fantasy Romance; My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Ajax Petrakos is one of seven Spartan warriors that have been made immortal by Ares. Two thousand years have passed and Ajax is struggling to fight boredom and find any satisfaction in his continued immortality. His only relief and hope is found in the prophesy that someday he will find his true mate, Shay Angel. Ajax is sent by his King and the Oracle to Savanna, Georgia to face a demon threat and respond to the latest prophesy. He arrives to discover the threat is his old enemy Sable who schemed to take away his loved ones right after Ajax became immortal and received his unusual immortal shape. Ajax jumps into battle against Sable to protect a human female. Soon he discovers that the human is his Shay Angel.
Shay is part of a demon hunting family. Her parents and brothers have always tried to protect her and refused to train her to fight. But Shay has started to see the demons all around and she has been studying some family records in secret to try to teach herself some means of defense. She still wants to fight the demons but finds herself very grateful to be protected by the warrior and his friend, River.
The attraction between Ajax and Shay becomes pretty irresistible as they keep getting thrown together trying to fight off Sable and his lesser demon pals. Ajax and Shay learn that she has to play a very important part in the latest prophesies, as well as being the fulfillment of his promised prophesy - if only for a short time as their lives and time together are threatened by Sable and an interfering Ares.
Ajax and Shay are wonderful characters and there is plenty of fighting action and steamy sex to keep this a fast, interesting read. This is the first in a series and begins the story of River, Ajax’s servant and immortal friend who was turned into a weapon that can be used for killing or healing. There is also a very nice story developing between King Leonidas and the Oracle! I'm looking forward to more good reads about these hunky Spartans.
Deidre Knight’s new series Gods of Midnight is about 7 immortal warriors from Ancient Sparta. Given the option of protecting humankind for eternity or crossing over to Heaven, these seven brave men choose to protect and serve. Red Fire is the first book in this series and is filled with demons, hunters, immortals, gods and oracles. There isn’t one slow sentence in this book and I couldn’t put it down until I finished.
Ajax is burnt out. He’s fought the good fight for over 2,500 years and he’s exhausted and would prefer to drown his troubles in alcohol instead of going on. There is only thing keeping him from madness, and that is the prophecy that there is a mortal woman, Shay Angel, who is destined to be his mate. The only problem – he has no idea where she is or what time period she’ll be living in.
Shay has just buried her mother and is trying to hold off demons that are now threatening her. But she’s not supposed to be able to see the demons. Over protected by her two older brothers she stubbornly sets out by herself to get some answers when she is captured by demons.
Red Fire is an excellent story. Evil abounds and yet through it all there is goodness so pure it is amazing. I loved that this demon story is so unlike any others I’ve read before; the entire story is pure genius – original, enticing and thoroughly entertaining. Red Fire has earned a place on my keeper shelf – and I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!
Eh...I'm going to have to stop reading this. But not because I can point to anything HORRIBLE about the writing style or plot. I think I'm just not in the mood for this sort of paranormal romance right now.
One thing that drives me nuts about paranormals is that the paranormal elements often direct the plot. Rather than be character driven, the plot is circumstance driven and that is really beginning to bug me about these paranormals.
For instance, instead of developing a believable relationship between the H/H, the author throws in a "fated mate" plot device, so suddenly the hero is simply chomping at the bit to have his woman. There's no believable build up there.
Then, everything that happens is a direct result of some weird paranormal outside influence...and even in non-paranormals, I'd rather see characters grappling with who they are and their own personal demons than dealing with ACTUAL DEMONS or some evil dude intent on murder or destroying their lives.
Plus, I found that I was disappointed right away, because I read Deidre Knight's Butterfly Tattoo and was so enthralled that I hoped to find something similar (character-driven, emotional) in her paranormals.
This is the first book in the "Gods of Midnight" series which features 7 Spartan Warriors who accepted a gift of immortality from Ares, the god of war, to protect mankind.
Ajax Petrakos has been waiting for over a thousand years for the Oracle's prophecy to come true, that he will be united with his love, Shay Angel. When he does meet her, it's when he rescues her from Elblas (aka Sable), Ajax's sworn enemy from the days of the Persian War. The sparks fly between Ajax and Shay. They make a great couple as both are strong, assertive and witty.
I really enjoyed this book. It was very interesting to read about the Spartans and their history which is briefly mentioned at the beginning. Also, the story and characters are interwoven well. The concept of immortal Spartans protecting mankind who now live in the 21st century is ingenious.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Ajax Petrakos is an immortal 2500 year old Spartan warrior whose job it is to protect mankind. Shay Angel is a mortal modern woman, whose family just happen to be demon hunters. They meet in beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery when Shay is being turned into a stature by a demon. These are the principal character in this action filled novel of good guys vs. evil guys. Ajax and Shay are charged with locating an ancient mirror with mystical properties, but so is Ajax’s worst enemy. “Red Fire” is the first book in the series Gods of Midnight and I freely admit the fact that the book is set in Savannah, GA is one of the reasons I wanted to read it. I was not disappointed if you like action with your romance you will enjoy this book.
But I didn't. Maybe I've OD'd on PNR lately. This had elements that should make it a winner for me: sexy lead, magic & mayhem, a story that's more than romance-focused...
But it just didn't work (for me). The history of the male lead (Ajax) - no. The rest of the cadre and characters driven from the same history - heavens, no. The female lead - hate her.
Maybe I'll read it again in the future. Give it another chance.
This was a did not finish book. I didn't like how the hero ignored his friend and commanding officer for a month to get drunk and screw women.
I didn't like how the heroine's introduction was at her mother's funeral. This is a romance novel, and I was so depressed.
Then there's some sort of demons after her family and her adopted family is demon hunters...but she just found out she was adopted and no one ever knew. Drama. I just didn't like this book.
this book was god awful. slooooooow, repetitive, cartoonish 2d characters, overwrought mcs, stupid family secrets that make no sense given the family. I was stuck in a car for 30 hours over the course of a week, so i slogged through it (i'm a fast reader, but it was such an irritating book i kept having to put i down). i wish i had that time back.
I love Greek/Roman mythology, which is what drew me to this book. The idea of a band of eternal Spartan warriors is fantastic and novel, and Ajax seemed completely yummy. However, I got very frustrated with Shay. I guess I just wanted a tough girl, and she kind of vacillated between tough and uncertain. I was much more interested in Leonidas's story.
Just reread this, Love the Spartans! Shay and Ajax are so wonderful together, the world building in this series is awesome and the plots suspenseful and engaging.
I listened to this book in audible and fell in love with these characters. I read the reviews and either the book was edited and rereleased or the audible version is different from the print. Ajax is one of seven Spartans changed by Ares in the river Styx to be immortal. Each one has different powers. Ajax just happens to be able to turn into a hawkman. There was a prophecy about him finding his one true love. But after 2000 years he was tired of waiting and wanted to figure out a way to go to the Elysian fields. But then he is sent on a mission and finds Shay Angel the one prophesied about. Shays family are demon hunters. Only the men in the family can see them, until a couple years ago. She started seeing them a couple years ago but they still wouldn't let her hunt. There is a mystery surrounding who she really is. Demons are hunting her and Ares is involved in some trickery. Ajax still has feathers as stated in some reviews and can take hawk form to battle but he also has a human form. I thought there were times that it was funny and some serious. Some was a little over the top but this is a paranormal romance story so it is fiction. I will be listening to more.
I did try to get through this, notwithstanding the muddied plot, incoherent dialogue, inconsistent characterization ... but threw in the towel when I got to this absolute cringefest: She grasped both breasts within her own palms, bouncing them in invitation. “Yee haw, baby, they’re ready to play ball. You bring that bat on over.”
I wanted to like this book much more than I actually did. The premise is wonderful to me -- it's got ancient warriors, shape-shifting, psychic juju going on, fated mates (which are really my thing if you didn't know), but it really fell short.
I think it was the whole guy-transforms-into-a-hawk-and-has-sex-with-his-human-girlfriend thing. Don't get me wrong -- I adore shape-shifters, and I think it was hella cool that Ajax went from big imposing human dude to wet-your-pants-if-you-saw-him glowing ginormous freakishly awesome Hawk Dude. However, having a shape-shifter boff a human while they're transformed into their animal just squicks me something fierce..
I liked Shay, and really felt her frustration at her family's tendency to keep secrets from her. I also adored the interaction between the Oracle and good King Leo... I know River's book is next, but I'm hoping Leo and the Oracle do get their own.
There were a couple continuity errors that irked me as well.. For one, it was almost implied that Shay was a virgin (her blushing when Jax's brother said something about virgins having a harder time with the portal travel, and the flash of pain when she and Jax first have sex), but then she talks about numerous previous lovers... Kinda bugged me. Then there's the whole Apollo severely punishes anyone who touches an Oracle thing and yet there's supposedly a whole lineage of them? Well how were they havin' babies if nobody touched them?? Or was it just a case of menfolk being willing to suffer Apollo's wrath in order to bag an Oracle? *shrugs* Either way, it bugged me a wee bit. And finally the conversation Shay and Ajax had about his previous lovers -- he talks about how he had a lot of human lovers over the years, and she said something about how he could have gotten married, and he's all like "no I was waiting for you" and she's all squee-ing over how sweet it is that he was faithful... to her... while banging all these chicks... just because he never married them? Yeahhh... Not feeling it.
Don't get me wrong -- the man's 2500+ years old. If he'd been abstaining the whole time I would imagine he would be MUCH less pleasant to be around.. Nor would I judge him for his past were I in Shay's position.. I'm all about reformed rakes and all, so the fact that he's most definitely going to be faithful to her for the rest of eternity is wonderful.. But I still wouldn't be thrilled about it nor would I be seeing big puffy hearts in the air because he chose to bang multitudes of women but that he knew one day she'd be around and he'd love her, so he never gave any of those women his heart. Makes me feel kind of bad for at least some of those women, even though he wiped their memories when they were done.
It wasn't all bad mind you -- hence the three stars...
There was a lot of action for the Urban Fantasy fans (though keep in mind this is mainly a PNR not UF), the side characters were all interesting enough to look forward to more of the series, and Shay's awakening combined with the little twisty-twist at the cemetery were all positive points. I also enjoyed the meshing of ancient gods and goddesses with Christian theology. That was a surprising little twist that made for an interesting read.
Overally, I'd say a solid 3 Stars. I'm planning on reading the second book in the series, Red Kiss, so I hope that it is an improvement now that we've got the "universe setup" that's necessary with PNR's out of the way.
Red Fire is the first book in Deidre Knight's Gods of Midnight series. Seven Spartan warriors were given the option to live eternal life as protectors of mankind. They will be destined to fight any and all evil in its various forms for the rest of eternity. Ajax Petrakos is one of these warriors. But immortality has taken its tole on him and the only thing keeping him sane is a prophecy that foretold of his destined mate. For many years he has been searching for that one woman and he finds her in present time New Orleans, Louisiana, being threatened by a powerful demon.
Red Fire started out slow for me. It took me a while to get into the rhythm and cadence of the book. I felt like the narration was a little unusual, in that we mainly get the hero's perspective as the story is being set up. At times his "voice" came across as more feminine than masculine. Occasionally it would strike me that Ajax's thoughts or feelings might be more true to how a woman would react than a man. Once the back story was in place the plot started to pick up this became less noticeable.
I especially enjoyed the first meeting between Ajax and Shay. Ajax is a most unusual character in that he can shapeshift into a hawk/man creature. Shay at first takes him for a demon. With good reason, because his form is very scary to behold. The other demons are well described and just as interesting. Ms. Knight very craftily creates a creepy mood and setting among the graveyards in New Orleans. I could easily picture the sweeping oak trees with their limbs draped in Spanish moss.
There are some very interesting secondary characters. I think my favorite was the Oracle. She had quite the personality and I loved her interactions with the King. I hope at some point they will get their own story. Even the demon, Sable was shrewdly crafted and was engaging to read about. I am going to go out on a limb and say I think that people who enjoy the author Nalini Singh would enjoy this book.
I wanted to LOVE this book, but as it stands I only liked it enough to continue with the series to see if it becomes somewhere near as good as her Parallel series and I'm very curious about the other sexy Spartans.
The chemistry between his king Leonidas and the Oracle Daphne through off more sparks than the main couple Jax and Shay. I adored Ajax, too bad there wasn't a better heroine. Shayanna Angel started off as a mature woman of 25 years in the scene of her mother's funeral where the reader is shown how she thinks, you would then come to the conclusion that she would talk like an adult but her manner of speech is akin to that of an uneducated teenage girl.
There's a great back story and the plot was well done, the romance was lacking in terms of the obvious incompatibility of hero and heroine (there was no chemistry!) and the glaring mistake of Ajax describing her as blond in the vision when Shay has black hair- I don't know how those two could get mixed up. Granted the vision could have been wrong but why wasn't it acknowledged???
I'd like to see more Greek gods as well, and so I will read the next book which is about River, whose short scene after transforming back into his human form after being used to stab and heal Shay was hotter than the love scenes between hero and heroine.

I actually read this book (along with the rest of the series) when it first came out and decided to pull it from my archives and have another go at it. I love the storyline being based on Leonidas and his fearless Spartan warriors that we all know from the history of the "300". What woman wouldn't live a Spartan warrior of her own? The warriors in this book have been given immortality by Ares, God of War, after vowing to protect humanity for eternity. I absolutely LOVED the Hero in this book!!! He is Ajax, King Leonidas's 2nd in Command. He is a believable character with a tortured soul and is tired of battle from serving the War God for over 2,000 years. However, I quickly remembered how much I despised Ajax's love interest in this book. Shay Angel is supposed to have this great Calling as a Huntress of evil demons. The woman is dumber than a box of rocks! She's also suppose to be Ajax's one true love; his literal soul mate, as foretold by the Oracle of Delphi. Poor Ajax deserves a better woman!!! I still believe the book is worth reading for sure. There's plenty of interesting side characters that are both for Team Good and Team Evil. I love the journey that the side characters are setting up for. Even though I'll have to put up with Shay, I'm still looking forward to revisiting the sexy warriors of Sparta! Happy reading!
