Jill Nogaless rollicking text keeps readers on their hooveser, toeswhile newcomer Lorraine Rochas vibrant illustrations bring the whole circus to life.
When the animals get loose at the circus, the laughter begins. This book is told in rhyme, is easy to read and has a great cadence. It is a fun tale with lion chasing zebra through town after he steps on lion's paw. The illustrations are fun and detailed. In several of them you can look for zebra who is hiding from lion. Once they are on the run, everyone else follows until there is a happy ending and zebra and lion are no longer in a tiff. A great read aloud for classrooms. This is a wonderful book for schools, libraries and homes as well. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
What would happen if circus animals got on the loose? Zebra on the Go gives us a silly tale of circus animals on the loose and it is quite a show! The beginning of our story we enter the circus. Unfortunately for lion during their performance, Zebra steps on his foot leaving lion very upset and leaving the circus. The story depicts what happens to lion along the way outside of the circus and it certainly causes much chaos.. In the end it is Zebra who rescues Lion, ending their rift between each other. With bright illustrations and rhyming words galore, Zebra on the Go is a delightful read that kids will enjoy.
Nobody likes to be tread upon. Certainly not lions. Thus begins the tale of Zebra on the Go. Where will he go? All over, apparently--anywhere to escape the wrath of his once good friend Lion. Luckily there's a rhyming scheme to help him out.
This rhyming caper has a zebra on the run from a lion who is upset that zebra stepped on his toe. It is fun to look at the illustrations and try to find Zebra as he darts through the town with Lion in a close chase after him. Use this book for a one-on-one read with with a child and ask him to find the zebra and describe the commotion going on around the city as the lion chases the zebra and then the circus people chase after the lion. It is a fun romp all the way around!
My kids are into animals right now. This immediately grabbed their attention. At the circus, zebra accidently steps on lion's foot. Lion gets angry and chases zebra through town, with all of the other circus animals following them. Cute situations. Rhyming. Not amazing, but busy pictures with a lot of animals, and I can ask my kids to narrate for me.
“Trumpets tooting, cannon shooting, Music playing, horses neighing, flags are flapping, children clapping”.
Fun! Fun! and more Fun!
Can you tell I might love this book? I wasn’t sure what to expect at first but as soon as I turned to that first page and those words just slipped so easily off my tongue, I knew straight away that this book would be prefect for a story time session. I had visions of laughing children, each child engaging with the pictures and getting excited about what would happen at the end.
The book is utter chaos and fun (I think I may have mentioned that a few times already), and the illustrations have so much for a child to look at and talk about which is great for early literacy skills.
I can see this book becoming a favourite of many children and storytellers because the words flow so easily and you just want to know what is coming next in all the craziness. The book touches on feelings and helping people, with lines like “temper soaring” and ” friendship mending. Lion Hugging”.
The book uses rhyming words which assists children with the development of their reading, for example if you are rhyming words like “chase is ending, friendship mending” the child is able to see the relationship between the two words ending and mending. This assists with learning several words easier because of the same ending e.g. ing.
I highly recommend this book, its fun, its chaotic, its fast paced, and its a fiesta to the ears and eyes.
Wow, Zebra on the Go is SO much fun! It’s all about a circus, but not just any circus—a really crazy one where things don’t go as planned. The circus is supposed to be exciting, right? But this one gets even more exciting when Zebra and Lion mess up their act! Zebra runs away, and Lion chases him all over the place!
The words in this book are really bouncy and make you want to read them out loud with lots of energy. It’s like you’re in the circus yourself, running around with Zebra and Lion. And the pictures—oh my gosh—the pictures are so bright and colorful! The way Lorraine Rocha drew the circus makes everything look so alive, like the animals could jump right off the page. I love how you can see all the action happening, and it makes you feel like you're right there in the middle of the fun.
I think this book is perfect if you like animals, especially zebras and lions, and if you like to laugh. It’s not just a regular story; it’s a wild adventure where everything goes a little crazy, but in the best way possible. I couldn’t stop giggling, especially when Zebra and Lion keep getting into funny situations.
This book is awesome for reading out loud, and I think even my little brother would like it. It’s a circus that you can read over and over again, and every time, it’s just as exciting as the first! If you love a good chase, lots of laughs, and super cool pictures, you have to check out Zebra on the Go!
We are at the circus. All has gone well until . . . The Fierce Lion and Speedy Zebra main act. Zebra enters and stomps its hoof down on Lion’s toe. It is an accident, but Lion is still roaring mad. Lion chases Zebra out of the circus, through town, down the pier, and onto a tugboat. But Lion follows in a rubber tender. Will he ever catch Zebra?
Zebra on the Go is a fantastical circus of animals and performers all running amuck as Lion chases after Zebra. Poor Lion jumps into a rubber tender, something magical hits his boat, and Lion begins to sink. Fortunately, Zebra sees his friend in trouble and throws the rope with an attached life preserver. This act of friendship/kindness soothes the beast in Lion. The two friends hug. By this time, the entire circus is scattered throughout town, the pier, and even the water.
Rocha’s illustrations capture all the activity and excitement of this runaway circus.
The real winner is Nogales’s rhymes. For her debut children’s book, she manages the race with her meter, slowing and racing as needed. Zebras on the Go is a wonderful read-aloud, which kids will want to hear many times . . .

ZEBRA ON THE GO was an overall well put together book. The rhyming had me hanging on each line. The pictures flowed with the text and were beautifully crafted with their details on each page.
This story starts out at the circus until the Zebra steps on the Lion's toe. This makes the Lion angry and he's quick to chase Zebra. Lion chases him through the town and the chase soon takes them onto the boats. That is, until Lion falls in the water. It's Zebra to the rescue and all is forgiven. A friendship begins to stir between them after this escapade.
I really loved this read. The rhymes were perfectly written and not repetitive at all like you typically see in these types of books. My daughter enjoyed ZEBRA ON THE GO as much as I did. It was a fun and entertaining story to read to her and it'll be one to revisit and reread.
Final Verdict: With the perfect pictures to go with matching eloquent rhymes, this is a story that you won't want to miss out on. It'll be one to read to your child over and over again. To me, it's ideal for ages 2 and up.
Nogales, Jill. Zebra on the Go, PICTURE BOOK. Peachtree Publishers, 2017. $16.95.
A circus act gets under way and while the zebra is prancing, he accidentally steps on Lion’s toe. Lion is mad and gives chase to Zebra right away. They run through the streets and then off to the pier. Zebra jumps into a boat and Lion comes after him. Unfortunately, Lion’s raft pops a hole and he starts sinking. Zebra saves the day with a life preserver and everyone agrees that the entire escapade was a really good show.
The pictures in this book give readers a good glimpse into what circuses used to look like. It is definitely a more traditional view. The story is good with a unique premise and the rhymes are done very well. There are a lot of good details in the illustrations as well.
Zebra on the Go is a fun kids' book by Jill Nogales that will entertain your preschool and early elementary children.
Zebra on the Go is a story about a circus in town. To begin the story, Zebra accidentally steps on Lion's toe, and Lion becomes furious! As a result, a chase through the town ensues. Zebra desperately runs from Lion through the town, past townspeople, onto the dock and aboard a boat where the story comes to a climax.
Illustrations by Lorraine Rochas are very colorful and detailed, adding action and drama to the story.
This book has been a hit for my three-year-old son. He has had me read it to him multiple times, and he delights in telling the story himself.
If you're looking for a cute story for your little one, check out Zebra on the Go!
What a fun book! As the circus begins the show, the zebra accidentally steps on Lion's toe. In pain and anger, Lion chases Zebra out of the circus tent and down the street, over the boardwalk, and onto a boat. Hilarity ensues as the Zebra strives to stay one step a head of Lion. Not only is the short, rhyming text fun to read, but the illustrations are full of details as the entire circus follows the chase out of the tent, down the street to the ocean. Spotting the monkeys, the bears, and the other members of the circus and what they are doing on each page makes for a lot of fun. The story is silly and funny and ends perfectly.
After the circus zebra steps on the lion's toe, a chase through town ensues! The lion causes an uproar by running through the streets after the zebra. In the end, they become friends again and everyone is happy. The story is told mostly in rhyming two to four word phrases. It would make a nice read-aloud for slightly older children.
Rollicking rhyme make this an enchanting read for little ones as Zebra steps on Lion's foot at the circus and the zany chase begins. With wonderful illustrations, this book will be a delightful treat for all young children especially those who love animals. This book would be a great way to teach animal names to very young children.
Wonderful. The illustrations are delightful, lots to look at. I was looking for a book with little text (because I was sleepy!) for our night time story. This one was so captivating to me that I'll have to go back to it when I'm wide awake so we can drive deeper into the illustrations and find the things there that go with the rhymes. Loved it.
I love the style of the illustrations and the sort of I Spy or Where’s Waldo busy feeling of the compositions. (Especially the first page where the circus bursts out into the town.)
I didn’t love the writing after a while or the expressions on the character’s faces. (Too many saccharine smiles that all felt the same, maybe?)
A fun book, unless you are the zebra that stepped on a lion’s toe. Now they are all running around away from the angry lion. But the lions temper will cool. A fun rhyming story with great illustrations.
Reversal of the weak and the strong. Happy picture book month! This delight uses the mechanism whereby the prey (zebra) ends up rescuing the predator (lion). The familiar storytelling motif is accompanied by terrific stanzas within the framework of a circus.
This book wasn't quite what I expected, but it was till pretty good. A zebra steps on the toe of a lion and then the lion wants to find that zebra! It is basically a big book of zebra/lion hide and seek.
Who knows why some books are great and some are duds. This one was a dud at our house. I think it was read twice in two months and then back to the library it went. There's nothing I can pinpoint that is "wrong" with it. It just didn't click with our kiddo.
Wonderful illustrations carry the easy-to-follow plot. It is easy to sympathize with the lion and amusing to hunt for the zebra, among other features. Upon repeat readings, details about monkeys, giraffes, and clowns, etc. make this book a keeper!
This one was cute. It was a little long for the preschoolers. The rhyming was really fun, though. They also were more interested in the rescue part than most of the rest of the story. I think this one could benefit from being a little shorter.
This book would be a fun read-aloud, but it was a little terrifying for me because I know from recent history that if an animal gets out of the circus, they shoot first and ask questions later.
