I’m embarrassed to say that I read these and was completely entertained! Imagine a story that is part Hunger Games and part Bachelor...it’s the best way to describe this young adult series. If you are looking for deep, thought provoking storylines, you will be in for a disappointment, yet I really enjoyed it!

I am absolutely obsessed with this series. It has been my comfort series since middle school, and I continue to re-read it throughout college. It is like the bachelor mixed with distopian America as a monarchy. It is *Chef's kiss" 👩‍🍳🤌🏼😘

I avoided this series for months because I didn’t like the cover and I’m sorry but I DO judge books by their covers. ANYWAYS.

This was a sweet almost cozy read that made my 15 y/o self smile and the characters were wholesome and interesting to me :)

Let me start by saying I usually REALLY enjoy books like this. However, as fun as these books were to read with how involved I got in them, I am not a fan of the pace this series went at. This review contains spoilers so be warned.

I honestly wish these books were paced better because we see the entire Selection but we are also shown very few pieces of background to the history of the world these characters live in. It seemed like the author wanted to tell a story about how women are narrowed down to a single pick for the rising prince to take as his wife and the new Queen. But, on top of that, there are a few glimpses of action happening outside of the palace in which a rebel society wants to overthrow the monarchy. Those glimpses happened for maybe 8 chapters TOTAL during the first 3 books (keep in mind that a majority of the chapters are quite short). 300 - 350 pages in each book and we only get to hear about them in about 8 chapters? Why include this at all if you're not going to expand on it more? To me it seemed unnecessary since it left me with so many questions like, "how long have these rebels had problems with the kingdom," "when did the Northern rebels come about and were they only organized to fight the Southern rebels," "if these rebels are so set on overthrowing the kingdom then why have we seen them so little?" I had more questions but, unfortunately, they will never be answered in this series. I was happy when the main character, America, finds the history books and sees how the world was "before World War 4" but that's pretty much the only depth of history we are given. The rest we are just expected to accept as a reader and that's not okay with me without giving me reasons why.

Another issue I had with the books was the third, "The One." It ends in the poorest direction it could have in my opinion. Let me give a brief background first.
In the second book, "The Elite", you learn about the true motive behind the King's actions very late into the book. He detests America because he believes she is "unfit to rule" and openly tells her how he feels about her being in the Selection. NICE! An antagonist within the home! I'm fine with this because it allows for development between the family members while also questioning how should the nation be run. But then in the third book after seeing the story building on the views of the King and America and their differences, the author just kills the King off. Oh, and the Queen is dead too after America starts to see her as a mother figure. Their deaths happen IMMEDIATELY before America and Maxon's brief engagement in a sudden inside attack by the Southern rebels. Why not build on the conflicting views of the King and the rising Queen America once she becomes the princess?? It would have been a great learning experience for both America and Maxon as they prepared to later take the throne as the new King and Queen of Illia. But, no, let's not do that. Let's just kill them off completely to cut the story short and skip to Maxon's and America's wedding because THAT'S the ending readers want, right?? No, not this one!

On a positive note, a great thing the drawn out Selection story did was create character development. We were able to better understand the reasons behind the girls' actions and helped us enjoy them more. Personally, it let me get attached to the girls just before ripping them away due to an elimination and it got me that much more interested in the book. This was a great way to distract the readers of the attacks by the Southern rebels so many probably didn't question why there wasn't much involving the rebels if they were such a threat to the kingdom (didn't distract me enough to forget though). The story allowed us to fall in love with some and get annoyed by others like a good book should do anyways. The reader would jump for joy or cry into the pages or even slam the book shut in frustration and leave it on a table for a few hours. That was something this book did well at: pulling the reader in.

This series is so good I read it in middle school. After hearing a friend talk about it in homeroom. It's amazing and really brings you into the life of American singer and the selection of the prince. There is never a boring moment. Like spoiler.....the war and people killed, and affairs. So, you have the time to definitely read the.

-Haply Reading!

Helpful note: the first three are about America
-The selection
-The elite
-The one

The last two are about her daughter
-The heir
-The crown

Älskar den här bokserien speciellt de första 3 böckerna. The bachelor möter hunger games möter monarki. Mysig romans, vänskap, helt klart feel good böcker där man blir kär i minst en karaktär

Genuinely enjoyed this exuberant series! My mother gifted me the series for Christmas because of many positive reviews. I wasn't sure what to expect, while I like romances and can appreciate the entertainment some reality TV provides...I wasn't so sure I would enjoy the mix in written form. I admit, I have never watched a second of 'The Bachelor' or 'The Bachelorette', but I found myself immersed in the world of love-based contests all the same! Kiera Cass does a very nice job sprinkling in underlying storylines that wouldn't be necessarily classified as romantic either. The presence of political fantasy and dystopian vibes definitely made the series much more than 'just a love story'. While I admit I liked the first three novels more, the last novel still had a satisfying ending and a lead-up that kept me interested enough to continue. This series provided me with a lovely break from reading university-level texts, and I would definitely recommend it as enough of a light-hearted read to provoke one's interest and elevate one's stress.

Notes, in no particular order:
-The books are pretty short. This could have been condensed and edited down A LOT.
-I know you didn't pick this book up for geopolitical intrigue but it's *comically* bad. No understanding of the deficit or debt would lead to China invading (and taking over the entirety of) America. Also the current Ukraine/Russia conflict really makes it more ridiculous that Russia would do any damage invading China&America. Just, the entire history here is hilariously awful.
-It seemed for a while that there wasn't going to be a love triangle, which I was glad for. But no, there it was, came right back. And it was painful. He's a prince who is actually pretty nice! On the other hand, he's a really pretty really loyal lower caste who thinks he's dragging me down and broke up with me but feels bad about it. It was unbearable in book 2 when she waffled EVERY CHAPTER.
-Her name is America Singer. Because she's in an arts caste. Just...sigh.
-The characters are generally so one dimensional. Her mother and brother's caste climbing, her younger sister's adoration and enthusiasm, some of the other girls. And that's not even touching any of the Eadlyn terribleness. That's a one-dimensional protagonist if I've ever seen one.
-THE REBELS. Oh, one is good? and one is worse because they don't care if they kill people? I was predicting , because how is this whole thing 5 books? Then I realized that the last two are America's kid's story and the Selection was DRAGGED out into three books. And nothing comes of the rebels. Honestly not much comes of Maxon/America's more progressive world views, either. But this whole plot point was incredibly weak, also one-dimensional, and used cheaply throughout the series.
-The first book was rather weak but not terrible. Unfortunately it doesn't keep that up.

❕BOOK REVIEW❕
⭐️ Rating - 3.5 stars

✨”The selection series” by Kiera Cass✨

The story follows a competition where girls compete for the heart of a prince, blending romance, drama, and the desire for royalty. Sixteen-year-old me was obsessed with this series. America singer's journey and the drama-filled competition were totally gripping. However, looking back after a few years, my perspective has changed.

There are definitely problems with the series. It's filled with outdated views on women, and the whole idea of competing with other girls for a guy feels demeaning. Plus, there's no clear reason why this competition even exists. America often comes across as the "I'm not like other girls" type in a really cringey way.

On the brighter side, the book covers are so beautiful. The romance and plot twists keep things interesting, making it a fun read. It still made me laugh and enjoyed reading it, even though I now see its flaws. It's not great, but it's not awful either.

I read this series a very long time ago when I was in the eighth grade (for context, I'm now a university student) but I thought I'd leave a review from what I remember and how I felt when reading this series. The first three books would be 5 stars and the last two would probably be around a 3.5-4.

This was probably the first series I've read where romance was the main topic. I enjoyed a sprinkle of romance between action, but never thought I'd fall for a book with THIS MUCH romance (after, I went through a spiral of cute romantic YA fictions). This book was literally about a bunch of girls fighting each other to marry a really cute prince with the main character being the poor underdog. When reading the first time, I thought the first three books were perfect. I ADORED America and Maxon's story so much that I wrote summaries of all three books in my little diary (because it was a library book and my young self hardly ever bought books), in order to remind my future self to purchase the series at a later time.

Their dynamic was everything. From their first meeting to their last, their relationship was captivating. I loved how America was tough and family oriented. Her motivations stemmed from helping her family and I definitely thought that was inspiring. And Maxon was simply charming and forever raised my standards. Because I don't want to spoil things, I won't get into their specifics, but their interactions were always cute and swoon worthy.

If I'm being honest, I don't remember much about the political turmoil in the story, but that was probably because I was focused on the romance. It was interesting enough, but it was the character ship that made me read until the late hours of the night.

The last two books centred around Evelyn's Selection and truthfully, it didn't compare to America and Maxon's story. I didn't feel as connected to the characters but because the MC was already royalty, I guess I couldn't relate to her. I enjoy the cliché of the main character coming from hardship and having to make hard decisions in order to come out of that. The romance in these last two was alright, but not as swoon worthy as the first three.

Nonetheless, I have all of the books and get nostalgia everytime I pick them up. I will literally cry when I read specific parts because the connection between America and Maxon + my yearning to be back in the eighth grade just makes me sob.

I’m not even sure if I can put my feelings of these books into words. This series is beyond incredible and made me feel a huge range of emotions. It was romantic, heartbreaking, shocking, and thrilling all at the same time. Maxon and America have a romance that is unbreakable, through all of the ups and downs they made it through it all. However, I felt a rush of nervousness as I read the series because I was afraid that they wouldn’t make it through their arguments. I was relieved as they made it though. I don't think that any other book has ever made me feel as many emotions as these ones did.
The storyline of this series was so thrilling and unexpected, I could not put it down. I finished these books in a maximum of 3 days total. This series left me on the edge of my seat and gasping in shock as I laid in bed reading. The rebel attack was crazy and as I read, I put myself in the place of America. I felt all of her emotions and troubles as I read. I personally wished I could jump into the book and help fix all of the conflicts.
As I finished reading this series I was longing for more, and luckily I found it. I am so grateful to the author for making two more books of the series that follow the lives of Maxon and America's daughter. The excitement that I feel as I read these books is unbelievable and I dread the moment when I finish the last two books, but at the same time I am dying to learn what happens. This series is a 5/5 star series and I have never read a series so amazing.

Overall this was a good series. Okay so first of all let me say I'm a conservative person and a conservative mother. I believe in letting children stay innocent for as long as possible, but also that as young adults they should be prepared for the real world. That being said there were both things I loved about this series and things that made me cringe a little.

I loved that not everyone is portrayed as either good or evil. The main characters are far from perfect but are generally good people trying to do their best. However even the mean girl in the first selection wasn't all bad. I really love how this series exposes the main character and the reader to different perspectives. In the second selection we get to see the main character change from a spoiled princess into a compassionate open-minded human being.

Now onto the parts I didn't love. There were several times where one of the main character was whiney and illogical, and while I can kind of relate to some of it, some parts were a bit much for me. *Also for any parents out there of young girls who are asking to read it. I'd wait. There were a couple of times that the main character almost crossed the lines of sex before marriage. Which really bothered me I think because they were so casual about it and almost disappointed that it didn't happen. Also in the second selection there are a couple of gay guys. It was handled tastefully but it's still there. Again I'm a conservative Christian mom so while I told my older teen to go ahead and read and decide for herself. I told my preteen sorry maybe when you're older.

Very original series, one that is worth reading more than once. The first time I read this series, only the first three books were published. I reread those when the second two books were released. I decided to reread them on a whim (TikTok might have influenced me a little) and here is my review.

The first three books of this series follows FMC America Singer as she is thrust into a competition she reluctantly enters. The character development is wonderful, the plot is fun and the banter is perfect. Honestly, I have read them three times and fully enjoyed it every time.

And then there’s the last two books. They just did not live up to the first three books. The last two books follow Eadlyn Schreave in a contest she is reluctantly hosting. These two books had so much potential but the FMC is a spoiled brat who is really hard to like, even though I tried, I really tried. The FMC has amazing parents/siblings, so her ugliness is just so blatant and terribly written. Also, the plot is just not great. It is easy to follow but boring in most parts and overly predicable in others.

Overall I give the series 4 stars. Honestly if you are going to read it, I recommend stopping after book 3.

I reread this series recently. It is kinda divided into two segments. The first three books, America’s journey, I read in two days, which would have been one day and one night but it was right in the middle of exams so I couldn’t, but I would’ve.

I love this series so so so so much. Words cannot express it. Next two books also finished in like a couple days but I do feel like I liked America’s story over Eadlyn’s.

Um it is a ya, dystopian, romance novel. Not hunger games dystopian but pretty dystopian. The entire plot of the book technically enters around like a bachelor arranged marriage kinda thing (I’ve never watched the bachelor so im just guessing), so there is a significant amount of romance, but it doesn’t like completely drown out the rest of the book.

It also has a bunch of tiny novellas that are all there in this book called Happily Ever After in addition to the 5 books that are part of the main series. You obviously don’t have to read it but I um really enjoyed it…

Its kind of a 11+ book, kinda though even at 15 I did really enjoy it. But keep that in mind. Overall, would most definitely recommend. I loved loved loved it.

Very impressed with the storytelling in these books. While it took me a bit to get into them (I think halfway through the second was when I really became engaged), having finished the series there are a couple things that stand out: the way the story is woven is fantastic; I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen, that things would go stereotypically or would end unsurprisingly, but then everything flipped on its head all of a sudden. I would then think the ending was going one way, until, with 5 pages left, it would flip again, making the ending all the more impactful because of the way it almost-but-didn't end. It made those closing moments so much more captivating and meaningful.

I also love how Cass drops hints at her faith and weaves those beliefs and values into the world and characters without being preachy or awkward--that's a beautiful (somewhat rare) skill, and it was awesome to be able to read books that weren't explicitly Christian but still embody the values I hold close.

Anyways, highly recommend these. They were a fun read with some surprising twists and turns!

*Read these two years ago and never posted the review, so here it is :)

“Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only ever yours to break anyway.” - Kiera Cass, The One ( The Selection #3)

Kiera Cass's breakthrough novel The Selection sets off as a New York Times Bestseller for its exceptional storyline of a royalty version of "The Bachelorette" tv series. Bestowing a series of 5 novels, the story starts with a gripping plot and tends to become bland after the first three novels. Though Cass has a wonderful selection of novels, the infamous series of The Selection may not be all the hype after all.

Taking place in Illéa, America Singer, Caste 5, semi-poor, beautiful, and has great singing vocals, coming from the lower castes of the 7, Singer befriends Aspen Ledger a handsome young man, Caste 6. Living in the poorer side of town, scavenging for jobs to earn money for families, the option of the Selection offers to take place. The Selection; the process of selecting a few women from each of the castes to display and compete with each other to find a worthy partner and future queen for the crowned prince, Maxon Schreave. Only competing for the sake of her family's wellbeing, while being unconditionally in love with her best friend/boyfriend, Aspen, Singer applies for The Selection (originally advised by mother and... Aspen). After unexpectedly being selected for The Selection and winning the heart of Maxon Scheave, America battles between her love for both Maxon and Aspen.

Although the first of the series was quite enthralling, I was disappointed to see that as the series went on after the wedding of America Singer leading to the storyline transitioning from Singer to her eldest daughter, Eadlyn competing in The Selection, which had become monotonous and repetitive. Cass had a phenomenal exciting start though later becoming disappointing and inadequate as aspects were able to be predicted. Cass does possess a way of words when she completes her novels as she compels the reader with heartfelt and fanatical writing. I would rate this series a 3.8 of 5 as I had expected more from Cass' plots and twists hoping for a similar dispute as "The Selection" (Book #1). I recommend this series for fans of "The Bachelorette" tv-series that enjoy royalty depictions and those who find semi-maturity novels enjoyable.

I think I must be too old for this book. I found myself skimming the passages where the main character was dwelling on her feelings for the prince because the teenage angst was not at all compelling for me. I realized that I was only reading the books because I was expecting to get past the "will-they-won't-they" storyline and move on to a plot where they started revolutionizing the kingdom, making allies, and dealing with the rebels. I started book 4 with grand expectations and found out that the next two books are just another round of the first storyline. I'm afraid I won't be able to finish the series - I'm just tired of rolling my eyes and telling characters to stop being an idiot and just move on.

I can see that the dramatic back and forth of emotional attachment with a final wedding payout is going to be appealing to many readers, and admittedly, many of the interactions between love interests were charming. I think many people that just want a fluffy series to warm their hearts are going to love it. I just went in hoping for something deeper and was disappointed.

4.5/5

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime, and for one prince, it's the only chance to find his wife. America Singer is low on the caste system and despises everything involving the Selection process but applies to help with her family's finances. When she gets picked, she is thrust into royal life and forced to leave her family and secret boyfriend behind. As the months pass, she starts to realize that maybe Prince Maxon isn't as cold as she once thought, and perhaps love looks different than she imagined.

I really enjoyed these easy reads, and I finished the whole series within a few days. The concept for this one is a little Hunger Games meets Princess Diaries. I also don’t hate that America is the only girl out of the thirty-five selected that is a redhead. This is a five-book series with multiple spinoff novellas, and we hear it’s been picked up for a Netflix movie as well!

Going to be honest here:
The first three books were great- interesting, the plot was good. However as soon as I found The Heir was written from the daughters perspective I stopped reading. To this day I haven't read them, and that's why I'm giving it 4/5. I feel like 3/5 wouldn't be fair because it's not the author fault I only read 3/5 books so for the 3 books I read 4/5.
Honestly to me it felt like the last two books were I don't know, milking it. I really don't mean to offend, but I don't like when there is suddenly new perspectives in a series where the main cast has already been introduced. For example, a TV show but every season the cast changes and you get introduced to new characters- I just in general don't enjoy that. The ending of America's perspective was a good enough ending for the series- at least for me.

Hey, maybe I'll read those last two books one day and come back here weeping for forgiveness ;)
Until then, my opinion stands..
