Bridgette Connor is a woman on the edge. Her career is in tatters, her relationship is doomed, and after an ill-fated pregnancy and subsequent abortion, she does the one thing she’s always done best. She runs. Her car careens off the road leaving her battered, bruised and beaten. It is then that she meets the woman who will change her life. Alexis Parker is a woman in control. Her business is thriving, her friends are by her side and the daughter she refused to abandon is the happiest little girl in the world. When the bloodied and broken Bridgette Connor collapses at her door, Alexis does the one thing she’s always done best. She helps. Last Things is a story of two women, the story of how they are different and how they are the same. It is a story of love, a story of loss, and above all, a story of friendship.

This was a book I became aware of while browsing Kindle’s lending library – upon reading the summary, the story sounded interesting so I decided to check it out. Overall, the story itself was not bad – in fact, there was actually a lot of potential for this to have turned into something great. Unfortunately, due to poor execution, a story that would have otherwise been emotionally moving and heart-wrenching turned out bland and lacking in emotional depth (for me at least).
To me, the main problem with this book was the writing, which was very inconsistent and distracting. Some parts were written in a way that felt choppy and abrupt while other sections I felt attempted to go the “literary” route with overly descriptive paragraphs that were unnecessary and didn’t do much to further the plot, but then there were other parts that flowed well. This made the story come across as being all over the place and “true” character development swallowed up by stuff that didn’t need to be there. All the characters in the book endure one dramatic/tragic event after another and I’m sure the expected reaction from us as readers was to sympathize and feel for them, to be moved by their plight, to applaud their ability to overcome in the face of adversity and the relationships that formed as a result. I’m sorry, but throughout the entire time I was reading, I just couldn’t get into it – I found it difficult to connect with the characters on an emotional level, even though I know I was supposed to (and from the many glowing reviews this book received on Amazon, it sounded like everyone else did feel an emotional connection except for me). The main characters themselves, despite being inconsistently developed, were actually likable enough – the friendship between Bridgette and Alexis was admirable, Eda Mae and Blanche were there when they needed to be, and the little girl Eden was indeed very sweet. However, the situations they go through were too contrived, especially as it relates to the main character Bridgette – it was almost like the author was trying to throw every bad thing possible at this character and show how she was still able to rebound from all of it and therefore make the better person she becomes at the end more significant. In a way, it was too formulaic and predictable to be believable. I also felt as though Bridgette’s story wasn’t actually being “told” in the relatable way that it needed to be, but rather, it was merely being “reported” by an outside party similar to what we would see in a newspaper article.
Overall, I felt like the author tried too hard to give us an emotionally packed story and in doing so, crammed way too many “heavy” emotional topics into the story without giving adequate time to explore each one and tie it back to the development of the characters. Also, the last third or so of the book was essentially “fluff” that I ended up skimming through, as I felt like the author had already said everything she had intended to say a few pages back and so the rest was unnecessary – the loose ends could’ve been tied up in another page or two instead of dragging on for another 3 or 4 chapters.
Basically, I don’t regret reading this book and I definitely don’t feel it was a completely wasted effort, but if the book had gone on for longer (324 pages was way too long as it is), I very possibly would’ve abandoned it in favor of a better written book (and one that didn’t have as many grammar/spelling/sentence structure errors too, though it wasn’t significant enough of an issue to make the book unreadable for me).
Heavy-handed, with serious character and pacing issues. Even though I liked these women are redeemed through friendship and not romance, I found the book really clunky. The story moves from issue to issue (too many issues! too many hardships!) without any fluidity between them. I felt no emotional resonance with the characters because the plot was presented in an almost journalistic style, gussied up with flowery language. It's a shame, because the story was promising.
I received this autographed book from a Goodreads Giveway back in January and I finally got around to reading it, and I finished it in just 2 days! WOW, such a good book, I am looking forward to reading the 2nd novel, An Invincible Summer. This is a great story about love and friendship, and how 2 single women who meet each other become fast friends, although their lives are so different.
True Redemption – A review of the novel ‘Last Things’
“There's no need to talk about it, because the truth of what one says lies in what one does.” - Bernhard Schlink
Author Betta Ferrendelli’s novel ‘Last Things’ is a sensitive and poetic take on friendships and life connections. There isn’t a “Hero” in the book; it tells the story of two women from different walks of life who meet each other in a most unexpected way and form a life altering bond of friendship. Bridgette is a newly single woman whose life is in complete disarray and who is on the run to escape facing the harsh realities of life. Alexis is a single mother who has locked eyes with trouble in life and come out on top. Alexis is the future persona of the self that Bridgette aspires to be. They get together and thus begin a special relationship in which new life lessons are learned and obsolete ones forgotten. This is their story.
Ferrendelli has written the character of Bridgette in such a way that you can’t help but identify and then empathize with her life situations. Emotional scaring due to an incident at work, manipulated into undergoing a medical procedure and then realizing all of it were for nothing. Life isn’t easy for her and you wonder – when will this poor girl get out of this ditch? It happens soon and quite literally too after she gets into an accident and the goodwill of strangers come to her rescue. Alexis is the antithesis of Bridgette, she took a different path when life presented her with the same choices. So you get to see this wonderful contrast between the two characters and you can see the gradual changes happening in Bridgette as she spends more time with Alexis, her daughter Eden and around other supporting characters.
For a casual reader there is plenty to look forward to. Expect to be taken on an emotional journey as these two characters discover life together. It is a positive book which extols us to treat each day as a gift and an opportunity to do some good in the world and bring a smile to a stranger’s face.
There’s so much to love about the book, especially its simplicity. But this can also be argued as one of the book’s weak links, where sometimes it just feels all too simplistic how everything turns out in these characters’ lives; plus it could have been shorter by a few pages.
The grief in the book is brilliantly handled and the characters come to terms with the loses in an organic way. The angle with the small girl will get to you and so be prepared to have some tissues nearby.
Overall I felt the story was beautifully written and well paced. I very much felt like I became a part of their world and you get emotional with them and it stays with you long after you have finished the book.
I highly recommend you read this, it is a wonderful little novel.
Three stars - enjoyed the book and really liked the main characters Alex and Bridgette and I felt I got to know them very well throughout the story. However abortion, suicide, disability, domestic violence , marriage breakdown, death and institutionalisation amount to far too many emotionally charged themes for one book. Overall I felt the book tried to deal with too much and while well written I found it hard going at times. Ultimately a good vs bad type of story which is always nice

I obtained this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. This book started out so good and I got hooked right away and then it was like the author lost her inspiration and the plot just wandered aimlessly without an end destination. I DNF I could only read 50% and did not want to waste any more of my time.
I was enthralled with this book from start to finish. The characters walked off the page and into my life; I laughed with them, cried with them and felt their pains. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time and I am a voracious reader. I tried to explain how it made me feel without giving away any of the plot.
This is one of the best book I've read,Alex and Bridgette, Eden, Eda Mae,Blanche where just some loveable characters .the saddest part when Alexis died and when Eden got sent to that special need school so soon after her mom's death made me drain tears for that child and wanna slap that Carl
Such a great read. I found it to be very honest and so realistic. The characters were mostly very lovable and it was good to feel the change of heart that the more annoying character had.
This book contains a wonderful story! At times sad, at times happy, it is thought provoking. The characters are well developed, and you get really attached to them. I highly recommend it!
Can you move on? Bridgette has it all, she has a loving husband to be, is pregnant and loves her job as a reporter. But everything is about to come crashing down. Her baby will probably be down syndrome and her boyfriend wants her to get rid of it and she gives in to his demand. And a death makes her realize that she doesn't know what she really wants anymore. So she packs up some of her stuff and leaves to stay by her grandmother for awhile. But she doesn't stay there too long as she needs to move on. Luck has it that her car goes off the road in the pouring rain and she is hurt but she is able to make it to the restaurant that she past. Alex is just getting ready to go home when she hears the knock and she opens the door to the best friend that she will ever have. Alex is a single man with a young daughter Eden that has learning disability and she does her best to make sure that Eden is always loved. Bridgette is about to find her place in the world with Alex, Eden & Eda Mae that has been part of the family since Alex was little. They fall into a routine that works well for them. Bridgette finds out how much love she has to give to a child and she can't believe how anyone could not love Eden. Cal, Eden's dad is up to no good again and Alex just wants him to leave for good but he needs money again. This is the last time but Cal won't leave her alone and he is going to cause so much pain & loss but they will get through it. Bridgette doesn't know what she would do if anything happened to her new family and she is about to find out how much pain one person can take. Alex gets really sick and she asks Bridgette to take care of Eden as she knows that she doesn't have much time but Cal wants to put Eden into a special school and she can't stop him. Will she be able to get Cal to let Eden come back home to stay with her & Eda Mae as they are her family? Or will Cal leave her there for good? A good read heartbreaking made me cry tons.
A heart warming story of a rising journalist from New Mexico who suffers both professional and personal heartache. She is in so much pain that she decides to leave everything about her old life behind, including her job and her fiancé. She heads to Colorado to visit her grandmother but only stays for the holidays before continuing her journey for enlightenment. Driving through Kentucky in a raging rainstorm she finds herself going off the road and into an old creek. Her car is partially submerged and she has to climb out the window and claw her way up the bank back to the highway. With no traffic about she decides to walk back to a small diner she had passed. Of course by the time she gets there she is soaking wet and very bedraggled and the diner is closed. She peers in the window while knocking on the door. Finally someone answers and listens to her story. She immediately made her come in to get dry and warm. The woman’s name is Alex and she appears to be the answer to her prayers. She invites her into her home for the night and even finds clothes for her to wear after her shower. She promises to call the garage in the morning to have her car taken care of. Alex’s household also contains her 10 year old daughter Eden and long time friend and companion Eda Mae. These people change her life and help her find answers to the questions that drove her from New Mexico. What those questions were and how these ladies helped her you will find out yourself when you read this wonderful book.
First of all, the book emphasizes the closeness of the friendship Bridgette and Alexis shared. I was bothered by the secrets that they kept from each other. Especially when Cal slapped Alex. Best friends would never keep something like that from each other. The other thing that I felt was off was the fact that Alex, knowing she was dying, she didnt make arrangements for Edan. That would be the first thing a dying Mother would think of. Especially knowing Cal's history of wanting Edan in a special school. Under normal circumstances Alex should have summoned Cal and discussed what would happen to their daughter. Or even still, since Cal was such a jerk, at least put her wishes in writing so that Bridgette and Eda May would have something to fight Cal with. I enjoyed the book tremendously and was able to get past the secrets. But the book emphasises the love Alex had for her daughter and the friendship, love and compassion they all had for each other. There is no way a dying woman was not going to make sure her daughter was taken care of. I realize it can happen, but not based on the character description of Alex. This was a huge let down for me.

The heart of this story is the friendship started by an accident and the kindness of strangers. Wandering aimlessly with no destination Bridgette is hurting and running from a life with regret. She finds a fresh start in a small town that came with a friendship she could have only dreamed of. She falls in love with Eden and her heart is healed and full. Bridgette will be tested and lose what she finally found. She has to fight to get back that peace in a place she finally calls home. It's A full circle and Bridgette keeps a promise that helps her move forward and return to the writing that she loved and was afraid of. A beautiful gift from her once in a lifetime friend.
I felt like this book would never end. Being a Kindle book, it's always hard to tell when they will truly end. I have read many shorter Kindle books lately so this one just seemed to go on forever. I think it could have been shortened and gotten to the end much quicker.
Overall, the story was good. I almost stopped reading after the very first part when the main character made a decision to do something because it was what her fiance wanted and not what she wanted. Then she ended up running away from him and her job for other bad decisions she made. I never was sure if she was going to stick with anything in her life, but she finally does.
This book isn't about romance, it's about friendship and keeping your promises.
The main theme throughout this story seemed to be about two women and their love for a special needs child. At least, that's how I interpreted it and the reason I read it to the end. The main protagonist has problems facing issues head-on and runs from them. I struggled with the story until she stopped running and built a friendship with the child and mother of the little girl. The author handles special needs parenting well, understanding the love and caregiving needed. The in-between parts were filler for the story, the protagonist's struggles took second place to the child's story, making that the main reason I finished the book.
Bridgette and Elliott immediate attraction, which faded when she told him the baby wasn’t going to be normal. A source that gave her the story, ended her life, Bridgette feels the blame, though the newspaper doesn’t. Elliott looking for options with the baby they were to be a power couple in the news reporting. She quits it all, driving in heavy rain, an accident. Finding a woman at the diner to open for her. With meeting Alexis, she is in control, sharing a life with a child, though single. A friendship, of two women, forge together.Good story
Wonderful is not the word for this book so I'll say amazing.I've read a lot of books and and some so bad you can't finish. When I read a book that touches my heart I put it in a folder to be read again and again, this is one of those, this author takes us on a journey of two women that form a friendship that will last a lifetime, and shows us that love does go on forever.Believe me your heart will also be touched even when you have read the very last page.Have your tissues ready because you will need them.HAPPY READING EVERYONE.
Leaving behind her job and relationship, she finds what truly matters
Bridgette is a reporter and is soon to be married. Tragedy strikes causing her to leave her relationship and reporting behind. Fleeing and driving aimlessly, she arrives at a small town. The friendships she finds, allows her to redefine her life and her relationships. Although there is deep loss, Bridgette is now strong enough to face it head on and help a child and the child's father begin a relationship.
The story was good. I was surprised at part of the sadness in the story. The book could have been half the length if she hadn’t gone overboard on descriptions. Some are good but there were some that were over the top, completely distracting from the story line. I also thought that the friendship was a little weird. I have very dear friends that I am very close to, but this was a little sickly sweet over the top. I also felt like the writing was elementary. I don’t know how else to explain it.
This book was a great book to read. It was about love, loss, friends, friendship, family, and life. It also make you realize that when you have a best friend that understand you and still loves you inspite of your flaws and faults! Then you have a true friend! How many of us can truly say that we have a friend like that? I really enjoyed this book and hate that it ended. Thank you for opening my eyes to cherish what I have instead of what I think I need.
This is one of the best books I have read online or in print. I was so disturbed the beginning with the turn Bridgette's life took after the story and her personal devastation. And, then the hope and love. The healing time with her Father was personal to me. Even though the beginning of the end about ripped my heart out, it was right. Then, the encouragement that life goes on and so must we was uplifting. Thank you for this book. You truly have gift.
A very good book about friendship. Bridgette wandered into the diner on a stormy night and Alex helped her heal. This was the beginning of a lasting friendship. Thru the next two years Alex died of cancer but Bridgette stayed with Alex’s daughter Eden and helped raise her.
She gave up her career as a writer until the day she knew Alex wanted her to once again write! Excellent book about friendship.
I'm not sure how this keeps happening. Perhaps it's because I nab free ebooks where I can, but this is another book that appears not to have been edited. Full of improper constructions, grammatical errors, usage errors ("tie them over" instead of "tide them over" is one of dozens of examples), overwriting (such as using a noun and string of adjectives instead of a strong verb), and more. Maybe this book is self-published? Anyway, a routine plot was strangled by these flaws.
This is a beautiful and well written love story....not romantic love, but love of a stranger, a friend, a child, a mother, a father, a grandparent and a community. It is a story of forgiveness both for ourselves and others. It is gentle and kind and strong and fierce rolled together as life itself.
This book will warm your heart! Bridgette's life is in tatters both professionally and personally so she takes off only to find that life's problems are not that easy to walk away from. She ends up on Alex's door and the story progresses from there. Both women are very different but also the same in many ways. How they interact and grow is so well written.
I haven't read a book that has touched all of my emotions like Last Things did in a very long time! I admire your ability to put the connection these women had on paper for me to see life experiences we have all had and felt and bringing them forward again. We have these life events for a reason and should not be forgotten..
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of this book. As the story unfolds the reader becomes one with the characters that have come to life from these pages. It is a great reminder of how much people need other people, and how loving relationships transcend all things. Highly recommended!
