When your back is against the wall, can you change the person life’s experiences have molded you to be?

Fiona Pierce is many things to many people. Dutiful daughter to her loving parents, fiercely loyal friend to her very tolerant bestie, half-assed employee to her laundry list of bosses, and dedicated fashion goddess and spreader of good cheer to the world at large. But Fiona is hiding something behind her irresistible smile – something she’s determined to keep to herself.

Mark Beckett doesn’t do complicated. Saddled with lingering baggage from his childhood, Mark sails through life one girl at a time – with frequent gym breaks in between. He likes his life just how it is and doesn’t see any need to change his work-hard/play-hard attitude.

When an unexpected blast from the past threatens to turn his family's life upside down, Mark finds help in the unlikeliest of places – specifically the pint-sized princess who has a knack for pushing his buttons.

Can you overcome your fears and embrace the happiness you might just deserve? And, perhaps more importantly, can you really fall in love with someone who is so damn insufferable?

USA Today bestselling author Sylvie Stewart loves bad jokes, dirty rom-coms, country music, and baby skunks—preferably all at the same time. Most of her steamy contemporary and romantic comedy novels take place across her favorite state of North Carolina, and her characters never run out of snarky banter or snacks. When her laptop closes, Sylvie is a sucker for hugs from her twin boys and a good laugh with her hot-nerd hubby. If you love smart Southern gals, hot blue-collar guys, and snort-laughing with characters who feel like your best friends, Sylvie's your gal.

This is my second book by Miss Steward and it also happens to be the previous book of this series. This book is meant for NA audience. As expected, there is not much character development in this book. The chemistry is also short and forced. The plot is cheesy. I mean the whole shark loan etc is just OTT.

The banters are cute though. Some of it with a real humor that can cracks a smile on a bad day. The characters both the hero and the heroine are immature. I especially can not sympathize with the heroine. She just whining and feeling sorry for herself. Yes I know this is for NA audience but I want more fierce and independent heroine.

Overall I do not like this book nor hate it. There are things that can be improved and there are things that I like, especially the humor.

4.5 Shortcake Stars!!

I like that this is flipped from the normal scenario. Fiona is a rich girl that is not into commitment. She doesn’t even want a boyfriend, maybe a friends with benefits but nothing more.

Fiona was very ill when she was younger. Because of all the medical treatments she had to endure she feels there is permanent damage to her body and mind. She is funny, big hearted and has giant lady balls of steel!

Mark was a scrawny geek of a child has grown up and exercised his way into a Body-builders physique. Now with all the attention from the ladies he is the typical playboy who is normally a “one-and-done” kind of guy.

I really liked these characters, their group of friends and family. Mark’s brother Jake is hilarious. Unfortunately, I read this series out of order, and although I’m sure you could read this as a standalone, I want to read about Laney & Nate’s story which was the first book, The Fix.

Are you in the mood for a romantic comedy? Wanting something with a bit of a suspense and thrill to it? The Spark first drew me in by the cover as it had a cutesy feel to it and I just expected this to be a sweet romance. Instead, The Spark by Sylvie Stewart had me laughing out loud as I read through the book. Inside it turned out to be a Romantic Comedy/Suspense tale. We are introduced first to Fiona Pierce, who comes across a bit of a ditzy air head that comes from money. She is also sarcastic and a bit of a smart-aleck and seems to rub her best friend's partner's friend Mark up the wrong way. When the two of them are in a room, all they can do is pick on one another and treat each other horribly. When Mark's father comes back into the picture, trouble follows as Mark's family are thrust into the middle of loan shark debts as the loan sharks threaten to come after Mark's mother. Fiona who always loves to help and be a fixer decides to enlist the help of their friends and save Mark or at least come up with a plan to deter the loan sharks and steer them away from Mark's mother. During this adventure, we read as the sparks fly between Mark and Fiona, but can the two work out despite both swearing off love and bad mistakes? Is it true that opposites do attract and that the age-old act of teasing can still mean you have feelings for that person?

Title: The Spark
Author: Sylvie Stewart
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance

Thoughts:I'm not sure where to start! This was such a fun read, I giggled almost all the way through this book with a few aww moments thrown in with some tears. Now that I've had the pleasure of reading this one I will definitely have to read the first book! Fiona is a trip, I'm pretty sure I fell in love with her and now have a book hangover. And Mark, swoon, he will most definitely steal your heart and make your panties wet but I'm calling dibs!! This is a must read then reread and then maybe just one more time type of story. The characters are so adorable you can't help but smile at their craziness. I wish they were real so we could hang out all the time, I'm sure my face would hurt from all the laughing but it would so totally be worth it. Grab yourself a copy and enjoy the ride, you won't be disappointed!

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work and chose to write a review.

I volunteered to read this book for an honest review for United Indie Book Blog -This is one hilarious book. I absolutely loved the writing style of Sylvie Stewart. This book had my laughing out loud getting funny looks from the hubby. I loved the banter between characters, most especially between Fiona and Mark. These two have sworn off relationships of any kind, not to mention the idea of everlasting love. So the idea of a casual hook up is the best thing for both of them one would think, except fate has a way of changing things on a dime. Mark and Fiona are forced to spend time together because of troubles in Mark's past; ie, his dead beat dad who re-enters his life, bringing trouble that Fiona takes upon herself to fix. During that time together Mark and Fiona fall for each other. That is what neither wants or do they? I highly recommend this book.

** I volunteered to read an advance reviewer copy of this book. **

This is just shy of a five-star rating. I laughed so hard at Fiona's thoughts my throat hurt. And my chest tightened and its entire cavity was warmed by Mark. Plus I came very close to crying. An easy read with colorful characters, both primary and secondary, and a storyline that evokes hope with every turn of the page.

I voluntarily read this ARC for an honest review. There are so many things I loved about this book. First of all, it has to be one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. The writing is very witty and the characters have great chemistry.
Fiona Price, a pixie of a woman, is unstoppable. She is dedicated in everything she does, wether it's volunteering for a charity, cooking for her friends, there isn't anything she won't do. Except allowing herself to get involved in a relationship. Friends with benefits is fine, as a matter of fact, encouraged. As a cancer survivor, when at age 9 she developed leukemia, she lives life to the fullest. Now in remission, she doesn't believe in relationships, due to her uncertainty of getting cancer again.
Mark doesn't believe in relationships. His idea of dating women is to pick them up at bars, take them home for sex, and never see them again. Mark gets a scare, after a night of drinking, wakes up in a dorm with an underage coed and doesn't remember anything that happened. This is when he realizes that he needs to change his ways. When his estranged father ends up in the hospital after he was beaten up, his mother asks Mark to drive her to the hospital to be by his side. This is a man that left the family 18 years earlier. Sitting in the lobby at the hospital, he runs into Fiona, the most annoying woman he's ever met. He is pleasantly surprised when she offers to stay with him to wait for his Mom. Fiona always thought that Mark was an arrogant jerk, but she starts to see him in a different light after spending a few hours with him in the hospital.
How can two people who don't believe in relationships have a chance at love and happiness.
This is my first book by this author, but I know it won't be my last.

The first thing I thought after starting this book was… Wow, she rambles. And boy does she ramble. The character, not the author, that is. And it was cute. So cute how different parts of her mind and body joined the rambling, like Guilt and Pride and her female body parts. It made me laugh more than once.
After reading the first chapter from the female point of view I was asking myself how the author would manage it to let the male part sound differently. Well, she didn’t fully manage it. Mostly in the beginning the male character sounded exactly the same as the female. He rambled just more about manly stuff.
What I really liked was the character development. They grew with the storyline and worked on their flaws and in the end became bigger persons than they were before, also the manly rambling was lesser during the book…
It is the second book in the Carolina Connections Series and you can totally read it without reading the first one. In fact I thought this would be the first book of the series, so no worries about that.
What I really really liked was the fact that Fiona made other people see the strength in themselves. She was such a bubbly and encouraging character that touched everyone she met, which was shown so much in the end. I loved how it all played out. Everything.

Fun, fulfilling and fast-paced, Sylvie Stewart’s latest book, The Spark, is also a masterclass in how to write a strong, sexy heroine with a hint of vulnerability that a reformed playboy hero simply can’t resist.

The story moves along at a cracking pace and while it takes a while for Fiona and Mark to actually meet, we learn a lot about their backgrounds in the meantime – and it really helped me warm to them.

I did struggle at first with the book’s bright and chatty style but that could have something to do with the last book I’d read, which was a bit more serious than I was used to.

I soon got into the swing of it – and when I did, I couldn’t put it down.

If you’re looking for a quick fix of romance, this is for you. The chemistry between Fiona and Mark is irresistible – and the spark soon bursts into flames. It was such fun witnessing them get together. There are some great scenes that genuinely made me chuckle.

It’s the second book in the Carolina Connections series – although works as a standalone. The first has definitely won its place in my “To Read” pile.

With thanks to Sylvie Stewart for the ARC (via NetGalley) in return for an honest review.

Blurb:
Mark Beckett is the most annoying, patronizing, arrogant jerk on the face of the earth. So, naturally, I can’t get the damn man out of my head.

Fiona:
Like the old saying goes, I’m a jill of all trades but a master of none. What I lack in skill, however, I make up for in enthusiasm—something certain people (ahem) find irritating. But I have my reasons for living my life the way I do, for diving into one project after another and trying to make a difference. And if Mark Beckett doesn’t like it, he knows where to find the door. I don’t need his approval … or his panty-melting kisses.

Mark:
I enjoy the simple things in life: a job well done, a cold beer, a hot woman … you get the idea. But there’s nothing simple about the mess I just found myself in. The last thing I need is a pint-sized princess sticking her nose in my business and pushing every damn one of my buttons like it’s her job. But Fiona Pierce may be the only one with the tools to solve my problems—and the power to change everything.

Although this is the second book of a series, I felt that it worked well as a stand alone. I never felt lost or like I was missing something. In fact, it was easy to get right into the interesting and realistic romance story which was well written and had great dialogues between the fun characters. Once I started reading, I didn't want to stop. There were both serious and funny content as well as drama within the book, and I quite enjoyed it. I am actually curious about the first book in the series now, as well as the next one to follow.

I may not have read the first book, but I would be surprised if anyone who had didn't like the second in the series. The story is greatly told by the points of views of the two main characters; Fiona, a cancer survivor and daughter of rich parents, and playboy Mark. The way their initial "hate" for each other evolved into something romantic during unusual circumstances was brilliant.

I highly recommend this book!

This is the first book I have read by this author and I enjoyed it so much. Asset first it was a little hard for me to get in to, but once I did I was hooked!! Fiona and Mark are too cute. Fiona has had a hard time in life and is not really sure how to live for the future. She lives by fake it till you make it. Don't get me wrong she is sweet and totally funny but a childhood illness has left her a little skittish about the future. Mark is a playboy no other way around it. Relationships nope not for him and especially not with the crazy girl that drives him nuts, Fiona. He has a policy one time only and absolutely no friends. Crazy circumstances being their group together and Mark and Fiona start spending time together and their mutual no relationship polices starts seem not so great but just as they start to move forward Fiona's past hangups makes her pull away. Their story has so much...loves, laughter, loan sharks, and even a gay bar what's not to love!! Great story

You need a good laugh this is the book for you!

Fiona is one of those people who's heart is made of gold. She see's that you are suffering she has this need to fix you. To help med that heart and make things right. That is what she did with Mark and his family. Not only that but she fell hard for Mark too!
Mark who's types were young, blonde and oh so high schoolish! Once he was in Fiona's radar there was not getting out of it. They were not really kind towards each other at first. There were small jokes Mark would say to Fiona, who was short by the way. She took it though and dished it right back out. She rambled on in her head OMG! She could go for years!! However once her mind was set on something it was set until that task was finished.
It wasn't just Fiona who had you in stitches, it was Mark as well. Dude he was whipped!!
Like I said if you're looking for a romcom this is it!!

This book was funny to the very end. While it says it's part 2 in the series, it is made to stand alone, which I truly appreciate. We meet Fiona, a stubborn and feisty cancer survivor who has more money than most people because of her parents, and we meet Mark, a man well built, who works hard and takes of his mother. The two couldn't be more opposite, and Stewart lays for us a well written, funny and sexy tale bringing these two together. The characters are well established and each play their role well. The secondary characters are well established as well. The conversations Fiona has with herself were amusing and her interactions with her family, friends and Mark had me laughing until the end

Funny. As. Hell. I have officially found a new author. Fiona is a cancer survivor sort of drifting through her twenties unsure of what she wants to do with her life. So she bides her time by helping her wealthy parents raise money for childhood cancer research. Through mutual friends, she meets Mark, a meathead manwhore. Turns out that Mark is having some family drama and Fiona is just the person to help him with it.

Okay, so I know the whole manwhore, one and done thing has been done. He just needs to find the right girl to make him change his whoring ways. I think the ending is a foregone conclusion, but these people, especially Fiona, are funny as hell. I definitely recommend it for a quick and fun read with all the feels.

Fiona is the best friend of Laney from the first book 'the spark' but the book is a good standalone. Fiona is a small, feisty woman who always seems to be warm and sunny but has a way with words if needed. Mark experiences this when he tries to flirt with her and gets blasted.
When they get involved after her help with some family issues Mark soon realizes he wants more than 'friends with benefits' but Fiona has her reasons for keeping it that way.

I really liked this story. Well written, not too complicated. A story with heart.

The Spark is a great sequel to The Fix but also completely enjoyable on its own. It is witty, steamy, and hilarious. The characters are well developed and fun to follow, and the book is fast paced and hard to put down. The writing is very good, and I loved the way the main characters took turns narrating the story. The Spark is a great addition to The Carolina Connection Series. I can't wait to read the next book!

Sylvie asked me to read this book and I am so glad I did! I am super OCD about reading in order, but you really can read this as standalone. I got hooked and bought book 1! Immediately had me rolling...sarcasm and profanity and requirements. Thank you so much Sylvie and am excited to read about Laney and cannot wait for Jake's story :)

This was a great read, and I didn't know it wasn't a standalone. I quickly warmed up to Fiona, and her attitude, which takes a little getting used to, and I liked that she was dealing with a real issue along with a man. I think the author did a good job for peppering this story with humor, because it makes the story so relatable and lifelike.

The Spark by Sylvie Stewart a fantastic five-star read. This is the second book in the Carolina Connections series, and the second book by this author I have read, but I have already downloaded the next book in the series, I loved this series that hard!! Sylvie Stewart writes funny and lovable so well, I laughed so hard I thought I would pee my pants at some parts of the book, possibly more than the first. I adored that there are so many lines I could quote from this book, I would be here all day if I put them all in, I may consider one or two before I finish if I can decide on my favourites. I struggled to decide on my favourites as much as the first book, I even went so far as to highlight all my favourites in a different colour to the first book, I may have gone a little OCD, or crazy stalker in love with the author. (I can’t decide) Each book can be read as a stand-alone, but I know I am loving this series and if it keeps going in the same vein, that love will only grow it’s amazing.
Fiona Pierce is a force to be reckoned with, she may come in a short package but she’s small but fierce. Fiona is a very loyal and tolerant best friend, she feels she owes her parents everything, and in some ways, she does. But behind the amazing shoes and clothes and a smile that could melt the hearts of any big brut lies the truth that Fiona keeps very close to heart as she fears when people find out they won’t treat her like the fierce little woman she is.
Mark Beckett is a muscle-bound hottie, he has a work hard play hard attitude and a face that along with that amazing body melts panties off woman faster that he knows what to do with. When he wakes up one morning and gets a scare, he starts to re-evaluate his life. Then just when he thinks it’s can’t get crazier he gets a blast from the past and he finds himself with a crazy thing called felling for the one woman he can’t have them for his shortcake.
What happens when your past means that you don’t feel that you are worthy of someone so amazing, and also when you don’t do relationships, but you don’t want to just be friends anymore? This is such a great story, you need to read it to find out what happens between shortcake and her man who has arms so big you would think they could wrap round twice.

Gah! Get out of my head, you brute!”
This is book two in the Carolina Connections novels series by Sylvie Stewart. If you have not read book one, STOP, do not pass go, do not collect $200, go read it NOW! Sure, this could probably be read as a standalone however, I would highly suggest that the books are read in order. They will make much more sense and besides you will laugh so hard you cry so why not read it first??? Seriously, it is nice because the characters are an extension from the first book, and it includes updates on the first books couple that are very much appreciated. Both book make my top five plus star reads of the year for the rom-com category. I can’t wait to get my hands on more Sylvie Stewart.
All that being said, this book follows Fiona, the short sassy, verbal diarrhea mouthed Fiona, or also known throughout the book as ‘Shortcake’. Fiona is in a predicament when she is faced with meeting the friends of her best friend’s fiancé, Jake and Mark. Most importantly Mark, the hunky buff man that gives Fiona’s steel heart a run for her money. “At least I assumed it was the food that kept everyone quiet, not the weird tension between Mark and me. Was I the only one who felt it though? He had me discombobulated… And while I’d been cooking I’d caught him staring at me sever times- it had rattled me to the point where I nearly burned the glaze. Gah! Get out of my head, you brute!” Fiona is such a personality. She will jump at you straight off the pages (or screen) of your book and right into your heart. It feels as if she is literally voicing and telling you the story firsthand and in person. “I believe I am the only person I know who lives in a democracy consisting of a slew of imaginary crazy people and only one actual human.” From the unique chapter ‘titles’, to the romantic and comedic banter she has with Mark, there is not much to not love about her.
Both Fiona and Mark have feelings for each other; in the very least they are physically attracted to one another. “I’d be lying if I said she hadn’t been on my mind since the ER waiting room. How she’d gotten me to smile on a day like that was a complete mystery, and of many where this woman was concerned. The problem was that I didn’t have time or energy for more complications in my life, and she had ‘complication’ written all over her. It’s not like I could bang her and then never see her again. Not an option.”
As both of them are dealing with the feelings they have brewing inside of them, the ‘complication’ of the story comes out. “So, long story short, Fiona, our dad is a douchebag who our mom is somehow still hung up on- even though he walked out on her years ago- and he has loan sharks after him because he stupidly borrowed a sh*tload of cash from them. Now he’s back in town, we can only assume to suck us into his sh*tstorm and all our mom can think about is how to help him an/or win him back.” Jake explains this to her at the dinner they all are having. Fiona decides that this has her name written all over it. They are trying to keep their mother, Mary, from even seeing, let alone helping their father out of the sticky situation that he is in. “Well then, we’ll have to figure out a way to remove her from the picture without being obvious while you guys deal with the rest… I do love a good project.”
In the process of trying to accomplish this feat they are forced together, hence causing all the emotions, feelings, and attractions to surface between the two. “No! Mark was supposed to be rude and unbearable so that I could ignore my attraction to him… Fallopian Tubes, Vagina, and I have all voted and the results are in- JUMP HIM!...What was wrong with me> I was completely attracted to him, and now I had had hard evidence (oh, come on, I couldn’t resist) that he was attracted to me too. He only did casual sex- I only did casual sex. On paper, we should be boning right now- well not actually on paper because that might involve papercuts in some extremely inconvenient- oh, you know what I mean!” Even the tough brute of a man Mark, can’t deny his feelings for Shortcake. “My Shortcake stood in the threshold of the kitchen with a wounded look on her face and red puffy eyes. She’d been crying. The mere thought that either I or my situation was the cause of the tears had me wanting to take back every negative, sarcastic, insulting thing I’d ever thought about her or said to her. My gut roiled at the same time it was hit with the biggest sucker punch I’d ever felt or imagined. Because despite all my big talk, my history, and common sense in general, she was my Shortcake. What on God’s green earth was I going to do with this revelation?”
Fiona is indeed complicated and she has more to her that one would just think right off the bat. She is not necessarily the most secure and confident person that she lets the outside world believe that she is. It is a really good twist in the plot, and makes the story that much more believable. “But any relationship was asking for trouble. Sex was easy- it was physical connection with a few laughs thrown in. A relationship meant transparency. It meant vulnerability. It meant he would find out who I really am and all the things about me that are broken. It meant he would have the power to break me and I would most certainly break him eventually. It would end in him being disappointed at best- heartbroken at worst- and me cuddling up with Guilt for an ice-cream marathon and listening to her say, ‘I told you so.’”
What follows is truly a storyline that will make you laugh, cry, aww out loud, and feel the roller coaster of emotions from page one to the last word of the epilogue. I cannot wait for more of this series and to see who the next book will focus on.

(audiobook) If I liked The fix, I LOVED The spark. First, because this time, it’s read by not one but two narrators, so you get the dual point of view, and they’re both excellent. Second, because we get a little more drama and tension in this one. You actually fear for the characters not to end up together, since they have real problems. And finally, because you meet again with the characters from The fix--which is a big plus.

Fiona is a fake airhead, with an enormous heart and titanium balls. She’s fun and sweet, and you can’t help but fall for her. Mark is the usual playboy, but with family problems that Fiona will help him with... when they’ll stop bickering. The spark is a good enemies-to-lovers story. The way their feelings evolve is actually believable, it’s not just lust. And I enjoyed seeing Mark showing his vulnerable side.

Like The fix, The spark is funny and sweet and the right amount of sexy. And the bit of action and suspense thrown in, it is much better than the first installment.

I’ll probably try to read or listen to the next book, because I can’t wait to read about Mark’s brother.
