In the terrifying video game Bloodborne, deranged mobs and nightmarish creatures lurk around every corner of a horror-filled gothic city. Bloodborne: Official Artworks collects the hair-raising artwork behind this modern action role-playing classic. Included are character concepts, creature designs, location illustrations, weapons, items, and more!
Holy crap this book was gorgeous and so cool! Just a disclaimer, I’ve never actually played this game. I have neither the skill nor the patience but the gothic and cosmic horror is 10/10
This is a book featuring various artworks related to the video-game Bloodborne. The talent and skill here is incredible and the overall style is exquisitely dark and unsettling. This book gives a pretty good overview of weapons, settings, outfits, creatures, characters etc. I was hoping for a bit more in terms of unused concept art and development – I always find stuff like that fascinating - but I can’t say that I was disappointed as I still really enjoyed this and was absorbed by the artwork.
I was happy to finally get this artbook as Bloodborne is my favorite game of all time and served as my entry point to From Software's dark (and punishing) fantasy worlds. From Dark Souls to Elden Ring, each game had something new to offer me in terms of combat difficulty, fantasy settings and memorable bosses (I'm currently playing Sekiro, love the medieval Japanese setting).
Bloodborne captivated me because it encompassed all the things I either love seeing in movies, reading about in books or as my points of interest in general (Lovecraftian and Gothic horror elements, Gothic architecture and Victorian setting etc.). Old architecture always sparked my interest so I spent half of my gaming time simply admiring the work that went into designing the game's Victorian architecture, streets, benches, castles and even streetlamps (I'll get one of those for my house).
I did not give this artwork full marks because it lacks some thought process and inspiration behind each of the individual artworks. This can of course be found on the internet but having it summarized in one place would be great. Nonetheless, I'm happy with what I got as there are details in this artbook that are not visible clearly when playing a game so it was a great experience to study each image minutely.
Unfortunately, I have to report that this book was a major disappointment. The artwork in Bloodborne is some of the most beautiful I have ever seen in a video game, but I was expecting more from this book. One would be hard pressed to find material in the book that they could not find in game or from YouTube videos that analyze the lore and aesthetics of locations in the game. I was really looking forward to immersing myself in concept art and early iterations of character and set designs. I did not get this. If you want to flip through the book and be reminded of the reasons you loved the game, then this publication is good for that. However, I would not recommend purchasing it. I borrowed it from the library and that was enough for me, but, to each their own.
While the artworks are fantastic and they give some details that can be easily missed during your gameplay, I found two problems within this artbook, the first is that there's only used official concept art (I guess now is kind of obvious since its "Official Artworks"), so no early versions or alt versions of anything, the second is the paper they used to make this book, while the quality and the printing are great, the paper is just way too glossy and since there is a lot of black and dark environments decrypted in the book, its kinda hard to watch it if you don't have an appropriate lighting.
It contains environments, characters, enemies, weapons and items, it also comes with the artworks for The Old Hunters. I think it is worth if you find it on sale.
I love this game, and I love it's visual style. Gothic Victorian exaggerations that wouldn't be out of place in a Dracula anime; connections between werewolves, lunar cycle, blood, and birth; and a Lovecraftian twist that I actually like more than his actual stories.
I rewcently purchased for a student at the library where I work and when it arrived I ended reading it because the artwork is so beautiful. I've never played the game (don't think it's on Xbox) but if I ever get the chance to, I definitely would.
Me parecen sublimes los artes conceptuales de este videojuego. El estilo de Lovecraft que hay en cada uno de los diseños es majestuoso. Con diferencia el artbook que más me gusta nivel personal.
