Pretty general information, but it's always nice to know that this sort of thing happens to more people than you think. It's also nice that it doesn't just list enviromental or social causes of social anxiety, it also makes mention of genetics and how the individuals brain functions chemically. It doesn't talk down to the reader or make them feel like they should be able to achieve 100% success immediately and is full of useful techniques for slowly overcoming uncomfortable situations or turning things that would normally be awful into things that are only uncomfortable.

There were 2 overarching messages in this workbook:

1) Everyone makes mistakes and appears foolish, so don't worry about.
2) Don't be anxious.

Well, geez, if it were that simple, why waste 100+ pages saying the same thing over and over again? Oh, don't get me wrong. If you adore Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (as a counselor) or find that it works for you (as a client), then this is the book for you. I've never been a fan from either perspective. This book in particular seems so focused on the negative (e.g., "Don't do this," "Practice this so you don't do that," "These are all the forms your bad thoughts can take") that I found it disheartening and it took on the tone of an authority figure, shaking a finger at me and exclaiming: "Don't do it!"

I would challenge this. Instead of a series of things NOT to do, what about things TO do? (And to be fair, the book did have a few of these, but they were overwhelmed by the vast majority of negativity.) For instance, if you find yourself panicking, take a moment to just relax and breathe. Tune everyone else out. For just a moment, allow yourself to be a terrible. If you stutter or mispronounce words, use that. When you appear a fool in front of others, they are more likely to like you, to trust you, and to feel more relaxed around you.

Anyways, if you like CBT and struggle with social anxiety, try this workbook out. Otherwise, I advise you to look elsewhere.

It's an 'okay' book, just don't consider it a serious read. Things I like most about this book is that it strikes me when I found out that even some minor embarrassing social situations I face are carefully explained in the book, it's good to know the root of the problems and how I should interpret it and deal with it step-by-step. The author refers to scientific researches from time to time, which is very interesting and informative. However, most of the things are very basic stuff (I mean, too basic) and appears to be not interesting sometimes.

I'm surprised to see the rating on this very pragmatic book is so low. I was introduced to it by a psychologist who diagnosed me with social anxiety and the book is all about exposure therapy, the golden ticket to becoming braver and maybe even less afraid.

This very short and straight to the point book really changed my life. Before reding it the thought of public speaking literally would drive me to experice varrying levels of stress and axiety, sometimes even panic attacks. I thank God he allowed me to find this book though, now to see me infront of a crowd you wouldn't believe I was that kind of person before.

I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't heard it all before. I've been in therapy many years.
