A collection of stories from the author of The Sin Tax and The Carrier, This One Is Trouble offers deceit, dangerous women, and sudden violence. An old tavern legend returns to claim lost treasure; a Serbian con artist tries to sell a stolen masterpiece; a small-time criminal aggressively muscles in on the black market truffle game. These and twelve other tales provide fast-paced action and off-kilter humor. Perfect for fans of modern mystery and noir, This One Is Trouble is a bolt of mean-spirited pleasure.
I just discovered Preston Lang this year and after reading and enjoying his four novels I thought I would delve into this, his short story collection, which I also found to be gripping, entertaining and also quite humorous. The collection comprises of mostly crime stories and like all good short stories they contain some kind of twist or surprise at the end. In Preston Lang's case, a lot of these surprises seem to be double crosses of some kind or other and although they are mostly crime stories, they do cover a lot of different crime and offences. There is a art con, a dodgy drug deal, a betting syndicate scam, to mention a few of the topics covered but my favourite story involves Melody, a female card sharp and debt collector who knows her way around a blade ! Another very satisfying read that can be enjoyed by fan's of Preston Lang's and also a great place to start for new readers of his work.
I'm a big fan of Preston Lang's work, as per my previous review of his novel "The Blind Rooster", as well as a couple of shorts I'd read in anthologies (see "Switchblade"). His collection of short stories in this set is a solid demonstration of his snappy story telling and excellent prose, as well as a great range of colourful characters, great femmes fatales, and gritty violence. And his range of tales shows great imagination. I've recently acquired another two of Mr Lang's novels, so will be diving into one of them shortly. Oh, and I do just live the cover image! Speaks volumes. On a side note, I read the paperback version - POD from Amazon - not the Kindle.
