Kpop Romance

Undercover Fan: A Kpop Romance Book

Rate this book
The first rule to keeping a K-pop secret? Deny everything. Corrine Miller-Hayden is captain of the cheer team and a Texas beauty queen. As such, being an open K-pop fan would ruin her reputation.

Her life is going smoothly until she runs into Minji—her ultimate bias—at a fan gathering. She never dreamed she'd touch Minji, let alone accidentally take his phone. When they meet again at a pep-rally, it's not like Corrine imagined.

She thought she'd be showing off, but instead she becomes the target of a dye-filled water balloon attack. Minji saves her, not only from embarrassment, but from her own stuck-up self. Can she love Minji openly while she keeps her fangirling a secret?

Okay, this reads pretty much like a BTS fan-fiction.
It can be funny if you relate, but the story was awkward and unrealistic, the romance cringey, the dramaaa lame and facepalm inducing. But it's short and I smiled when the MC's mom said that "Minji" looked like a girl.

*2.5*

"I love K-pop, and I have a crush on Minji," I say, pointing at his picture.

"He looks like a girl!" Mom shouts.

I gasp. "You did not say that."

This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one, but I adore Kpop, and have been in the fandom for nearly five years now, so if I see a novella based around Kpop, I'm going to pick it up. Sadly I didn't enjoy this as much as I would've liked. I wasn't expecting some sort of literary masterpiece, but I tend to read quite a lot of sappy and overdramatic teen romances, so this should've been right up my alley. And yet here we are. I just found everything to be pretty cringey, and the main character was pretty annoying (most of the characters were though). And to top it all off, the romance felt so shallow, and forgettable. There were some pretty good aspects however, like every scene with the MC talking about her obsession with PTS (which is a pretty obvious play on BTS), the fanmeet was pretty cool, and the scene with her mom finding out about her love of Kpop. I still want to read some of the author's other works, hopefully they're more enjoyable.

4 stars -- OK, I'm totally reading these backwards, but I don't even care. I just had to dive into another of these K-Pop romances because they're so cute and fun. And this one felt really different from Kidnapped Idol too! Less danger and villains, more of an authentic YA feel with some Korean flare.

Before I go further, can I just say I liked the old cover better? This one feels...sexier or something. The old one had a more cute YA feel somehow.

OK, cover aside, I loved this one too. It was fun, and the romance was freaking on point!! That was the highlight for me for sure. I loved Corrine and Minji even more than Woon and Jemica!! I just really felt their chemistry, and I could feel the way their feelings developed. How Corrine went from a secret crush/obsession to really falling in love with the real Minji.

I was a bit worried that I wasn't going to like Corrine. I mean, I liked her at first, but then a bit of her mean girl came out and I was disappointed, and I had a hard time judging her sincerity, but then I felt like I believed in her growth, you know? It's kind of a weird life that she lived.

I will say that the friendship with Abby, and how that all played out didn't work for me. I don't think I really understood why Abby went that far, it was really really mean. I feel like as a reader I didn't get enough to figure out how she could go that far in the prank, and so I had a harder time with how that worked out than Corrine did.

BUT, since I was so in love with Corrine and Minji, I didn't care that much. If I didn't have that adorable romance, I probably would have been more bothered by that side plot, but I'll give it a pass. Seriously, the whole Galveston Island outing was like romance gold. LOVED IT!!

If you're looking for something light and quick to read, that gives you good feelings, I definitely say give these a try. They're a tiny bit cheesy, a little hard to believe, but at the same time really satisfying.

I always love a good, light-hearted read and grabbed up this one just for fun. It's not my first Kpop read, so I was prepared for the not always deeply founded emotions and surprises. . .and actually was looking forward to them.

Corrine is top cheerleader, gets great grades and queen of the school, but she's also secretly a kpop fan. Dying to attend a fan gathering, she disguises herself as best as possible and tries to stay in the shadows, but fate has her face to face with her fangirl heart-throb, Minji. Thanks to a freak accident, chaos ensues and she finds herself in possession of his cell phone. What goes on from there is something she never ever could have planned.

The characters are deliciously stereotypical of any kpop drama. Corrine is pretty and perfect, while Minji is a hot hero. Corrine is more of the 'bad girl' in this story, although it's more due to wrong decision than direct meanness. Minji is super sweet and the perfect guy in every way. Their meeting is predictable but sweet and simply fun to read about. And so, I fell into most of the book and let myself simply be entertained.

If this book had been a little longer than 220 or so pages, it would have done quite a bit of good. Just as the relationship hits cloud-7, disaster strikes as it needs to in this type of story. But it happens too quick. Minji is upset and takes off as quick as a snap. The sudden, and not really understandable, sudden curve felt like whiplash. The last couple of chapters peddle quick to bring the whole thing around to seal a happy ending, which comes speedy around with a few tears in between. If this entire last quarter of the book had stretched another fifty or so pages and held the same pace as the first three-quarters, I would have been a fan. But sudden race to an ending, left me dazed and shaking my head.

In other words, this book has everything a fun kpop read should have and, except for that end (why the sudden end?), was really an enjoyable read.

A fun Kpop story that made me laugh. Fun to read how the teen felt about her "regular" life and her secret Kpop life. There were a few funny scenes that made me laugh and a few twists that did not see coming. It all ended with everyone happy but how they got there was a blast. Once started had to finish to see if Corrine comes clean and how it all works out with her friends. Plus the references to modern Kpop were a blast.

I didn't like this one as much as I liked the first one, even though it was probably technically more realistic than the first read was. I didn't really feel sparks between the two main characters for whatever reason. Possibly I couldn't really relate to the heroine of the story, which may be why I never really got that 'spark'.

Another thing that made me not like this read so much was that I do get frustrated by stories where a lie is told and the truth isn't revealed for most of the story. I know that's often where the story comes from, but being a writer myself I know that you can write a story without having a character lie this way, even by omission.

Finally, this book had some typos that really got on my nerves - it's "shudder", not "shutter", and please check your "to" and "too"s.

Despite all that, I enjoyed the read, however towards the end I wanted it to be over quickly so I could move onto my next read. Probably a sign that it wasn't the best book I've ever read.

I am a big fan of Kdramas but not Kpop. I thought I would enjoy this book but I really didn't at all. The main character just let everyone walk all over her. Why did she apologise so many times to her 'friend' when her friend was the one who was so horrible to her, humiliating her and even going to hit her. Not only that but she apologised to the Minji so many times for lying to him but he lied to her too never revealing that he was in Kpop but that was never brought up and he never apologised for that at all. This is the first book I have read by this author and maybe her other ones are better and I might give them a go but I suggest you give this one a miss

I read the kpop romance books with two filters in place--I ignored the insta-love and the lack of depth--because these are novellas and there just isn't room to develop more here. With those in place, I thoroughly enjoyed them all! They are fun, fluffy beach reads, with a good plot hook to keep me drawn in and characters that felt realistic. Undercover Fan is definitely the strongest of the three and my favorite, but they are all a good way to pass the time and indulge in a little kpop wish fulfillment.

Gentle Reader Alert: I found nothing of concern.

I did not like Corinne much at all. I thought I was going to be able to sympathize with her, being a Kpop fan and not being able to tell her friends, but then I realized that she was stuck up and snooty. Even after she tried to change, she never once felt like she didn't deserve Minji to adore her and that just rubbed me the wrong way.
I thought it was cute and I loved the self reflection process she underwent, and that it wasn't just about the romance.

Asli ceritanya norak banget, alaynya ngelebihin Dilan sama Milea

I went into reading this knowing it's going to be like fanfiction and I usually don't mind it especially when I'm looking for a quick, easy, light read. What bothered me was the "friendship" between Corinne and Abby. They were toxic for each other. After being humiliated in that way, because of reasons that did not quite make sense, no way in hell would I be that forgiving or go out of my way to ask for forgiveness for something done TO me.

Well this was most definitely a BTS inspired book. I'm a huge BTS and Jimin fan so I loved it. Reason I only gave it 4 stars is because there was a few typos and I think maybe the story could have been longer? If you love a good old teen romance novel with a bit of Jimin thrown in, then this easy read might be for you :)

This is a charming and delightful story. Corrine is so busy being popular that she has lost touch herself, and with what being a true friend is. When her life goes spiraling out of control, a certain Kpop Star steps in and helps her find direction. The only problem is, he's hiding who he is, and she's hiding that she knows.

In a move that is sure to delight Korean drama fans, Minji has some moments that make you think of your favorite Korean drama shows. One for me was Boys Over Flowers, for when being bullied, (and pelted by eggs in the show) the hero steps in and protects the heroine from the assault. (Corrine gets it with colored dye, and Minji jumps in the way.) Another had me thinking of You're Beautiful/Fabulous Boys when our heroine leaves messages online for the hero, and in a romantic gesture the band helps Minji confess.

Cheerleader Falls for a K-pop Star? It seems unbelievable, but the author does a great job of making the story completely plausible. Not only is there romance and flirting, but some major character development. When the most popular girl in the school (Corrine) gets humiliated at a pep rally, somehow a famous K-pop star (Minji) from the boy group PTS, comes to her rescue. All in all, it's worth a few hours to loose yourself in a really good story!
