Exerpt from the prelude:

"Once, long ago, the land had been different. The towers of light marched across its little hills and valleys, almost without a break. Trees of light stood outside every door and lined every road. There did not need to be any night: it could be daytime always. In those days the human world was served by the strange, unnatural tools the scholars of the new land called "machines" and ordinary people knew as "makers." One maker would do the work of a hundred hands, but greatest of all were the Daymakers, the centers from which power flowed to all the lesser kinds."

This is a story of a human race that has lost its past; a post-apocalyptic peoples with no memory of anything outside their hard and hagard peasant lives.

Into this comes Zanne, seeking the dark mysteries of the lost past. The misfit wanderer meets a young girl, called Rat, whose child-like curiosity has not yet been stilled by the abuse of those around her.

Read it! It's a great book!
