Suds and Sam #0.5

Dangerous Code

Rate this book
She's got an artificial intelligence app. He's got her. If they don't get their sh*t together soon, New Yorkers are going to die.

Don't freak out, Jones. It's probably just a bug.

Oh. My. God. I'm on a bus with a friggin' terrorist!

In the bus's side window, my wide-eyed reflection gawks back, pale Irish skin tinted green. And instead of a successful entrepreneur, I see a woman biting down on her lower lip like a scared teenager.

Yeah, I want off this death trap. Who wouldn't? One small push on the stop bar and I could get free. But I can't just leave a bus filled with innocent people, can I?

I brace for the searing blast wondering if there really is a heavenly doorway with brilliant white light.

There's a clunk. I wait. Then nothing.

Finally a male voice shouts from upfront, "NYPD. Everyone remain seated!"

When I open my eyes, I figure I didn't survive the attack and this is the afterlife. Otherwise the chances of seeing Colin O'Brien again are what? A hundred zillion to one?

...He hasn't changed a bit. He's still got those dreamy baby-blues and jet-black lashes.I can't handle his intense stare, his breath. Just like long ago, his presence makes my panties melt.

Amazon Best Seller Stella Marie Alden loves Zumba, yoga, watercolor painting, and all genres of romances.

Her first book, ‘How to Train Your Knight’, won Romance Writers of America coveted Molly and Show me the Sparks Contests, and placed in four others.
Truly remarkable, considering she’s only been writing for three years.

Growing up in Vermont, she loved to make up stories. Crayons fought each other over size and placement in their cardboard box and imaginary friends crowded the house. Her brother often complained. “Tell her no one’s here, Mother.".

Her career paths have varied. She’s been a librarian, a classical clarinetist wanna-be, recording studio engineer, broadcast electronics repairman, and now she architects software programs.

She lives in Bergen County, NJ with her life-long hero and their two cats. Her two girls are grown but ever supportive. You go Mom!

Sassy heroine + NYPD hero + threat to national security = AWESOME read!

I absolutely LOVED Megan. She had a mild case of Asperger's, which made for some interesting situations with Colin, but her inner thoughts and dialogue were very fun to read.

Colin was 100% hero. He had been hurt in the past, which made him wary of getting involved romantically again, but he just couldn't fight his feelings for Megan.

These two had a history together, and I always love that element in a story. Their introduction was in a rather unusual setting, but that's what I love about Stella's writing; you never know what to expect!

This story was action-packed and full of surprises. Stella definitely has a talent for this whole romantic-suspense thing, and I'm looking forward to many more of these books from her!

(I received a copy of this book in consideration of an honest review)

This one grabs you and keeps you going until the very last sentence! We're talking danger, romance, terrorist on a bus for goodness sakes--it just doesn't get any better than this!

Storyline: A+/Character Development: A+/Reader Participation: A++/HEA: Off the charts!

This is an excellent read, and I believe it is definitely a "must read"...so grab it today! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book, and loved it!) ❤

Where there is danger there is love

This back story on our illustrious Megan aka Dr. Jenna Jones fills in those all important bits between the Sud’s and Sam mystery’s, giving us an insight to who she is as a person.

Our sassy heroine Jenna thwarts a would be terrorist plot, our NYPD hero Colin, sent to investigate, only to be thwarted by a federal agency due to a threat to national security. Colin realises there’s more to this situation that meets the eye, and when Jenna calls him out by his first name, he can’t picture where he knows her from, only she knows who he is, and time has been nothing but kind to him.

And when he finds out who she really is, he goes to her to seek information from her, as part of his assignment in the investigation, he gets more than he bargained for when she tells him about her AI creation Jason, but she gets more than she bargained for when he confronts her for who she really is, they then end up sharing a night of passion together.

After, when Colin is literally caught with his pants down, he’s given information about Jenna. He is not sure who and what to believe, having been hurt in the past before, it has made him wary of getting involved romantically again, even with there shared history, Jenna shuts Colin out, and when he comes to warn her, that she is in danger, she is then kidnapped.

Having mild Aspergers, Jenna is still coming to terms with her life, her skills set, her relationship with her mother, and the trauma she faced in her teen years, from the person she thought she loved and trusted, who betrayed her brutally and violently, effectively destroying her trust. And when her past comes back to haunt her, what was hidden, the lies have a way of circling back, seeking the inevitable, the truth.

This story was action packed and full of surprises, which made for some interesting situations, Jenna’s inner thoughts and dialogue were very fun to read. We get to experience the ups and downs, the thrills, the fun, the excitement, the danger, the suspense, the tension, the anxiety, the action, the humour, the witty banter, Jenna diving head long into danger with Colin doing everything in his power to protect her.

This author clearly knows how to hook and ensnare her readers to ensure they come back for more, me I’ll definitely come back for more from this author for sure! A very well written and telling story, covering various and intense themes, all connected very well.

There attraction undeniable, they finally admit that they love each other, there were definitely moments that will make you laugh, cry, bang your head against the wall and say WTF, the reader will totally immerse themselves, to get lost in the entirety of the story, gasping for breath long after the story has finished.

And those s€x scenes in and out of the bedroom were emotional, fun, flirty, intense, steamy, hot, beautiful and passionate, and there happily ever after was absolutely perfect, it couldn’t have been said any better if I had written it myself.

The couple: Colin and Jenna (Megan)

Romance trope: romantic suspense
Length: 155 pages

Plot: Jenna is a computer expert - sometimes hacker - who has created an AI program that can detect terrorists, among other things. When she thwarts a terrorist attack with an unreleased version of her program, she is pulled into an investigation led by her childhood crush, Colin. He doesn't recognize her, though, and why would he? He last saw her when she was 13 years old and attending a fat camp. She's since changed her name and her looks. But they're both deep in the middle of something dangerous now and will have to learn to trust each other and just maybe they'll make it out alive.

Commentary: Lots of Arab terrorists, including the top bad guy who I couldn't tell if he was just an awful person/rapist/user or all of that and a terrorist (he might have been using the terrorists simply as a device to get Jenna to recant to get back into his family's good graces). There are terrorists all over the world. I find using strictly Arab terrorists to be pretty cliche (very Tom Clancy!), especially when we're all much more likely to be harmed by homegrown American terrorists.

I love romantic suspense, but I felt like there were a few things jumbled up here - the confusion over what Jenna's program was and who could use it for what purposes and then the push and pull between Jenna and Colin. I could have handled one of those pieces of tension, but not both, especially since they seemed so bound up together. Every time there was a misunderstanding about the program (which in my mind is also connected with the villain and what he did to Jenna and what other people knew about all of that), that led to more misunderstandings about the love relationship which led to more problems with the investigation which then continued the cycle. At some point I wanted them to trust each other, but it seemed like they weren't willing to trust each other until the investigation was over, but the investigation wasn't going to move in a positive direction unless they could trust each other. Catch-22.

I definitely, no matter what else happened, wanted Colin to stop being such a jerk. Most of the time it was just in his head (all women are lying bitches! why is she such a liar!) but that was almost worse because we could see what he truly thought. But it's okay, because she's hot now. It wasn't until the very end that I actually thought he might really love her.

[ I voluntarily read and reviewed this book]

Two hurting people begin a path toward wholeness in a world gone mad.

Dr. Jenna Jones computer geek extraordinaire, has a problem with people. She's so smart, she's kind of awkward when it comes to interacting with the real world. Because of having a mild form of Aspergers Syndrome, her reactions can be unexpected, so she relies on her computer coded program- known as JASON (Jenna’s Assistance Software Over Network) to help her interact in the real world. JASON may have problems, and it's up to her to figure that out before JASON makes things even worse.

During a "real world trial run", the possibility of glitches comes into question. No matter, the program helps the good guys beat the bad guys. And Dr.Jones runs into the only guy she ever trusted when she was younger, Colin O'Brien, now a detective with the police. Colin keeps thinking he knows who she is, although she's lost weight and changed her appearance. He's in absolute awe of her programmer's mind, and her body is just as appealing . However, both of them have had traumatic incidents which make them wary of anything new. And, this is a whole new world they are maneuvering as they learn the dangers of trust and love while saving the world from a very angry man set on stealing JASON and kidnapping his maker, the naive Dr. Jones.

Hold onto your hats, this is one completely different kind of story: Aspergers, PTSD, trust and lust. My first thought is this actually could happen. Nevertheless, as a member of the general population with a limited knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder, I wonder if the "sex"- and there is sex, this book is adult in nature- would be as "mind blowing" as Jenna thinks it is. If trust is that quick between Colin and Jenna, as if those years had never passed, then the story is hard to accept. They both have problems, and they need to deal with them in their own way.

The story is good, the main characters well drawn. Recommended reading. 4 stars

Outstanding Read!

This book by Stella Marie Alden is is is - can I say it, probably my all time favorite read EVER! Yes, it is that good. I’d only read a few chapters and I saw this book for what it is, a well written winner. I fell in love with the characters Megan McCarthy/Jenna Jones the former chubby computer geek, now the sexy, trimmed down sexy woman with the new nose and now techie mastermind and the very, very sexy NYC Detective Colin O’Brien and their connection from 17 years ago. There is a richness of storyline and background characters along with intrigue, and spellbinding twist and turns that will keep you on the edge of the seat. I consumed this book and yet I was so sorry that I did because I wanted to read more about Megan, Colin and their odd assortment of friends and co-workers. I guarantee this book won’t disappoint if you read it! It won’t be my last read by Alden for sure!

Where AI can take us?

A great story about programming an AI and why all the different governments might want one. As we know, computer geniuses often start very young and think outside the known box. Hence, we have Megan/Jenna and JASON. And Aspergers or Autism traits can often be associated with these types of brains.
So we get a terrorist story with the US government behaving badly indeed and even infiltrated by a foreign agent. Definitely, doesn't make me feel any better, especially, as in this story, so is the FBI!
A good romp, but Publishers, please note that your Editors have missed several plot continuities eg chapter 20 and the Nova - see chapter 17 for what had really happened to it - this is not the only place that this type of error happens.
You lose a star for poor editing.

I love, love Stella's books. I think each one I read is the best. This one is an excellent thriller. Jasper the artificial intelligence that Jenna has invented is amazing as well as scary. Colin is the NYPD detective on joint force task on terrorism. Jenna known as Megan McCarthy and Colin met many years a go at a "Fat Camp" where Colin took her under his wing to help. All these years later he does not recognize her with name change and loss of weight. They are thrown together to work on the terrorist plot to blow up one of the buses filled with passengers during rush hour. There are so many twist and turns with both of them having troubled past to work among their jobs. Please, please pick up this book to finish it. It is such a good, good read with good out come.

If you haven’t read any of Stella Marie Alden’s books do yourself a favor and jump right on that…she’s great! I’ve been reading through her books and each series tends to overlap characters, something that I love! I tend to get invested in characters and love catching up with them periodically. Throughout different books we kept being introduced to Jenna and Colin and I was so thrilled to find they did have their own book! In typical Stella Marie Alden fashion, Dangerous Code is exciting, sexy and out and out hilarious! So glad I’m caught up with Jenna and Colin’s backstory…but now I have several more characters that should have their stories told, and if they have been told then I really need to read them!

Being an expert AI designer can kill

This was such a good book that I hated when it ended! Megan, an expert software designer with Aspergers Syndrome, originally meets Colin, a NYPD detective, at a “fat camp” when they are teenagers. Fast forward 10 years. She has changed her name to Jenna, invented an artificial intelligence app named JASON and gone through some really shady and bad experiences thru no fault of hers. There are kidnappings, traitors, rape, shady government agents and other twists. The opening hits the ground running and doesn’t stop until the end.

Don’t Miss This Book!

Alden is one of the best romantic suspense authors out there. This is my favorite so far. Megan McCarthy AKA Jenna Jones is a beguiling character, one of the rare ones that I wish could be a real life friend. With mild Asbergers and off the charts programming genius her life is at risk. Colin re-meets the leggy beauty, transformed from the awkward teen he knew years ago. This original thriller pulls us through the steamy heat generated between these two complex characters as they navigate this supremely suspenseful tale.

Dr in danger

I've read all the books in the series and loved them, but I hadn't read this one. After reading about doctor jenna in the suds and Sam series and wanted to find out more about her and Jason. It was a great read, I hadn't realised whst her character personality what represent and she was a different h from most books I read. She was clueless in the facts of daily life to some degree but a genius with computers. Colin on the other was very alpha male, I have a job to do, but I still want this woman at any cost. Great read, loved the side characters.

** I volunteered to read an advance reviewer copy of this book. **

What a thrill! Not only in the suspense and mystery of the central plot but the familiar, yet not, of the main characters certainly gave tingles and giggles throughout the story. Once again, the author has a strong female lead driving the story and does not disappoint with the choices made by said character. A slight departure in my familiarity of genre for Stella Marie Alden but one that shows she can write across many platforms.

I love this story which actually has a very strong and independent woman named Megan who has a mild Asperger’s. That is a mere side note in the story and she is totally uncontrollable in an awesome way. It helps that she has found Colin, a crush from her past. This is a great story with so many levels of betrayal and governmental crazy and action it is hard to say anything bad about it.

Loved this story with lots of geeky smart hackers who are all female and the tough as nails JTTF officers who need their help to nail the real enemies. I would like to see a book two that follows on the lives of Megan and Colin, especially with how things ended. I really felt for Megan and all the emotional trauma she lives through.

Great book has it all!

I love this book, which I got free , because it has everything: romance, suspense, mystery, & thrills plus even humor. Seeing that it's about an AI program, it's even got science fiction covered too. The action is great, the romance is sweet and steamy, and I can't wait to see what Stella Marie Alden comes out with next.

Dangerous Code

Wow. I loved this story. A lot of people are not aware that those who suffer from Aspergers Disease are very very clever and their minds are just as quick as a computer.
I would love for Maggie/ Jenna and Colin to show up in another book but this time married with children.

So good!!

*****Dangerous Code by Stella Marie Alden: so good!
This story started with a situation, which continued to evolve at a fast pace through out the story. It kept my interest, and it often had me smiling or on edge. Relatable characters, with a steamy attraction and strong friendships, as well as formidable enemies. Edgy with danger, kidnappings, incredible AI, etc., then a really nice wrap up/HEA.

Excellent!

This is not a Suds and Sam book; it is a prequel about Jena, developer of Jason, the AI computer! It is a terrific book, with nonstop action and an exciting, action filled plot. It is not cozy or numerous but has unusual, varied characters who enter later books . Great reading experience!

4*s from me.
I really enjoyed this book. I like the style and the characters. Mostly.***EDITED***
I really liked this action packed story. There wasnt really a dull moment.
Dr. Jenna Jones (Meggie) was a loner most of her life. From an uncaring hateful mother to her co-workers, Meagan has always felt different. As an adult things are definitely better than when she was younger. She has always had a soft spot for a sweet, caring counselor from her "fat kid camp". Years later she still cant help thinking of him. But when something brings them together again, will her fantasies become reality or be crushed like her heart all those years ago?
Love the many different directions this story takes, and yet all still flows nicely. This is a VERY fast paced, edge of your seat story. I like watching Colin turn into a character with friends and the history without boring the reader to death. This will def be an author I follow.

Wow!! I absolutely loved this book. Everything about it was fantastic. A thrilling, edge of your seat story with great lead and supporting characters, really scary bad guys, a great romance with hot love scenes, a touch of sci fi and a bit of humour thrown in toward the end. It was pretty good

I enjoyed the story but it felt rushed through. It would of been a bit more interesting if we knew about her mother. It was a really nice to read about someone who is mildly autistic and trying to understand the world. Making her a nerd was great!
