Life at Grace Field House has been good for Emma and her fellow orphans. While the daily studying and exams they have to take are tough, their loving caretaker provides them with delicious foods and plenty of playtime. But perhaps not everything is as it seems…
Emma, Norman and Ray are the brightest kids at the Grace Field House orphanage. And under the care of the woman they refer to as “Mom,” all the kids have enjoyed a comfortable life. Good food, clean clothes and the perfect environment to learn—what more could an orphan ask for? One day, though, Emma and Norman uncover the dark truth of the outside world they are forbidden from seeing.
This is not what I was expecting.. AT ALL. I didn't realize that this was considered a horror manga, albeit it's not a scary story necessarily, but the situation is scary for the characters. I went in thinking this was going to be some happy go lucky story about kids at an orphanage.. BOY WAS I WRONG. I think this was a good introduction to the story, because it's got me curious as to what's going to happen next and I've already come up with all sorts of different theories that are more than likely going to be way off. Interested to see what goes down in volume #2!
Okay, so I was recommend The Promise Neverland by someone either on Twitter or on my Youtube community board when I asked for manga recommendations. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS GETTING INTO. I thought that this manga was going to be about a group kids that were living in this orphanage that maybe went on some adventures because they lived in a post apocalyptic world. I was wrong. The first twist/revelation in this book had me blown. I mean so blown away. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and what I was reading. I wish that I could provide more detail, but honestly I think it's best if you just go into this book blind. There are so many amazing plot twists and turns. I appreciated everything that Shirai was attempting to do with this series and I instantly went and put the second volume on hold at the library. It is just that AMAZING. If you haven't picked it up pleaseeee give it a try.
2nd read: Rereading to tab and it remains a glowing 5 star. Please pick this up. It is absolutely WILD!
1st read: WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!
I was warned that this was horror but somehow was still blindsided.
It's so cute and cheerful and heart warming. Until WHAM! it comes in with the right hook. What the right hook? MURDER. Cannibalism. Demons. Breeding children aka food.
The amount of times my mouth dropped open. This is such a strong beginning to what I am hoping to be a 5 star series.
I watched the anime and now I'm starting to read the manga - both are spectacular! Anime is atmospheric and beautifully done, with amazing production value and great soundtrack (that's been stuck in my head for days now). Manga is detailed, beautiful and fast paced. Also - the whole thing is pretty Dark. In the best of ways.
You can do either one, but honestly, for something this good I have no regrets for spending my time doing both. I cannot wait to read the next volumes!
Oh my gosh this was SO GOOD. Since this was my first ever manga, I went in a little hesitant, but I was so shocked at how much fun I had with this!! 😃😃🤩🤩
The Promised Neverland Vol. 1 follows Emma, Norman and Ray, three super smart kids who are living at Grace Field House Orphanage. Despite it being an orphanage, all the kids love it there- they have a warm bed, good food, a great learning environment and Mom, a loving mother figure to everyone. What more could they want? But then Norman and Emma uncover the dark truth of the outside world they are forbidden from seeing and everything changes…
Y’all, I had SO MUCH fun with this. This was kinda an impulse read- I just saw it at the library and decided to give it a shot bc I’d been wanting to try a manga for a while. It looks like a cute and cozy story from the outside- but inside, it is VERY different.
There’s so much to love about this book!! It grips you from the get-go, describing a very tranquil environment at the orphanage- but as soon as secrets are discovered, everything changes. The plot is thrilling and quick-paced- even tho there’s not a huge amount of action, the mystery develops really well and the story still manages to keep your interest. BUT OMG THE MYSTER Y😳😳🤯🤯 The twists and turns the story took were actually INSANE and my jaw was on the floor multiple times. It was wild!! 👀
I was a bit worried before I went in that I wouldn’t be able to get used to the manga style, but it actually wasn’t that hard to adjust to. Once you get the hang of it, it’s basically like reading a graphic novel backwards- and it’s honestly so satisfying seeing your bookmark get closer and closer to the front of the book. I was also worried that I wouldn’t like the art style bc I’m not really an anime person- but surprisingly I loved it!! 😍 It was a nice cutesy style that kinda helped lighten up the sometimes dark storyline. So, yeah, loved that!! 🤩🤩
I don’t really have any critiques except I do kinda wish I had gotten a little more attached to the characters. I did like Emma, but Norman and Ray were a bit meh. Norman kept smiling the entire time even despite the terrible things they were discovering and that just weirded me out a bit. However, I get that it’s only the first volume and it’s super short, so it honestly didn’t bother me a huge amount. I just hope I’ll connect to them a bit more in Volume 2 ☺
Overall, loved this!! 😩😩 This manga’s got so much going for it:
✔ Great art style ✔ Thrilling plot ✔ AMAZING mystery with loads of twists and turns ✔ Super cool and original premise
So, my first manga was definitely a success! I’m definitely gonna pick up Vol 2 next cause I just NEED to see what happens next!!
~ 4 stars
~~~~~~~~~~
Wow that was WILD 😳😳🙈🙈 The twists and turns!!! Ahhhh it was so good tho 😩😩
Ya sabía de qué iba todo porque los spoilers siempre rondan a la vuelta de la esquina. Sin embargo, me ha sorprendido mucho y gustado más de lo que esperaba. Esto es más complejo y turbio de lo que pensaba.
Creo que de ahora en adelante tendré nueva adicción.
A Peter Pan retelling like you've NEVER seen before!! Emma, Norman and Ray are the brightest kids at the Grace Field House orphanage. And under the care of the woman they refer to as “Mom,” all the kids have enjoyed a comfortable life. Good food, clean clothes and the perfect environment to learn—what more could an orphan ask for? One day, though, Emma and Norman uncover the dark truth of the outside world they are forbidden from seeing.
The Promised Neverland vol 1 sounded like some drab lost boys pirate retelling. Yes, the fact Emma, Norman and Ray were orphans caught my attention because I LOVE orphans, but yeah... just look at that cover... it seems wholesome and not a bit creepy... right?! Well I'm here to tell you looks are DECEIVING!!! This is the BEST PETER PAN RETELLING EVER!! (Yes, I needed that in all caps.) And it all has to do with the creepy atmosphere and the mystery element that is such a huge part of events.
It may seem repetitive to some readers but only if you're used to the story giving you easy and simple solutions. This isn't that sort of story. Our orphans are in an impossible situation. They have a deadline they have to beat or they lose the most important thing... their lives. And their opponents hold all the cards. And its SO believable that these 11 year olds are figuring each step out, one at a time. They're working together like an Agatha Christie mystery detective!!
I love the sibling love, teasing and affection between Emma, Norman and Ray. These three grew up together and their knowledge of each other is only eclipsed by the things their Mom knows about them. Emma though clearly comes out ahead for me. She totally subverts female tropes being athletic, smart but not the smartest and quick thinking on her feet. We don't see this in manga much. At the same time she has a great love and loyalty for her younger siblings that is a huge motivator in their predicament.
Ray was fascinating being a hugely knowledgeable bookworm and a realist. A great contrast to Norman who is a strategist most likely to get out of sticky situations. You'd think that three highly intelligent children would be boring. But their Mom is one step ahead of them. She is the major reason these three are so bright besides their natural born talent. And the shift in their relationship with Mom is heartbreaking and yet soooo understandable. It's a game of three smart but blind mice against an evil, fat cat with monsters on her side.
The Promised Neverland vol 1 has the perfect art to accompany the mysterious and creepy story. It's a little twisted, very detailed (just look at the faces in the background) and surprisingly dark. You feel the creepiness right away even though every thing looks perfect on the outside. It totally shocked me as I read through chapter 1 how I could feel the atmosphere before knowing what I would find. And then at the end of the chapter the big reveal burst that clean looking facade wide open... its thrillingly fresh and satisfying.
The first chapter is just the beginning though. The art continues heightening the creepy and mysterious twists as Emma, Norman and Ray work out what to do as the oldest and brightest among them. The tension is so thick and Mom looks increasingly sinister.
I can't talk about the twists that make The Promised Neverland vol 1 such a great start to a series. But its sooooo creepy! Pirates have NOTHING on the monsters in this story. And as we read the chapters Emma, Norman and Ray work out the basics of their situation when before there were only the most innocent clues to the truth. I loved how this worked... it kept me on the edge of my chair reading as fast as I could.
Then when I was done I told my friend all about the volume and pressured her into reading it (thank goodness she loved it as much as I did!) And after she was done I persuaded a roommate to read it as well! I just had to share all the twists and reveals with someone. The Promised Neverland vol 1 is a Peter Pan retelling that takes on a life of its own and its creative, creepy and twisted!
I can't help but enjoy The Promised Neverland vol 1 because of the gorgeous creepy art showing off the twisted twists of an impossibly dark situation. Emma, Norman and Ray work together to beat their nemesis... Mom!! This is a Peter Pan retelling that EVERYONE (and I mean YOU) should read.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art
This is a multi-volume series and there may be references to the plot of those volumes... SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of 1 | 2 |
Placeholder for volumes 1-20 A series with a ton of potential that ended up feeling generic and rushed after the first two arcs. 5 stars for the first two arcs, 2 stars for the rest.
Estoy en shock. Jamás me hubiera imaginado que me iba a encontrar ese tipo de historia aquí pero OMFG!!!! Me ha flipado muchísimo. Esta historia nos sitúa en un orfanato. Allí viven nuestros protagonistas. Es lo único que conocen y parece ser todo maravilloso. Lo que no se esperaban era descubrir una verdad MUY TURBIA que les hará dejar de creer en todo lo que habían vivido hasta el momento. Es muy sorprendente, engancha muchísimo y los personajes me han encantando. Estoy deseando leer el segundo tomo, porque se queda todo en un momento muy interesante.
This is a solid, creepy sci-fi horror that I think is suitable for children as well as adults. (Er, at least as far as graphic content goes; maybe not if you think your kids will have nightmares after reading about orphans whose surrogate mother is actually )
alright ya'll everyone's been reccing me this for YEARS since my whole peter pan thing started, but I was never super interested. but YA'LL this was SO GOOD. I'm obsessed. literally ordering as many volumes as I can rn
Review will be for the whole series; read at your own risk!!
Read 20 volumes
So far, I’m interested in how this is shaping up. I think the premise is crazy and I really want to know about this world. I almost want to watch the anime before I finish the manga because I need to know more now! Super good thriller/mystery manga!
Edit 6/28/21: holy shit this manga is so intense. I love that I feel like I’m 10 steps behind everyone. The twists are UNREAL. Also, I think Norman is still alive.
7/2/21: these volumes are so addicting and fast! I can’t wait for more.
7/13/21: Goldy Pond arc is over and I’m looking forward to more! So thrilling and addicting!
7/29/21: Things are starting to get really crazy. I’m looking forward to the ending.
1/8/22: I FINISHED THE SERIES. Yes, I cried. A few times really. I really like how this was resolved. This series really showed me that I am too stupid to survive the farms lol I am amazed at the level of storytelling in this series. It's so well done and wrapped up. I really enjoyed that a lot. I'm sad we lost some great characters along the way, but the ending was just.... *chef's kiss*. I liked the twist and the resolution when they got to the human world. I also found the coronavirus reference WILD. Like that's how old the virus is now? Or how new this book was?
Anyway, this is a fantastic manga for dark drama fans. Excellent storytelling and impactful characters at their best.
Entre a este mana con un total desconocimiento de lo que me iba a encontrar y ha sido toda una sorpresa. Me ha gustado bastante. No es lo que me esperaba y no digo mas para no chafar la sorpresa... Sinopsis: Ella los ama como si fuera su madre, pero en realidad no lo es. Ellos se pasan el día juntos, pero no son hermanos. Emma, Norman y Ray viven felices en este pequeño orfanato. Pero, cierto día, su tranquila vida llega a su fin de la forma más escabrosa posible.
¡¿Qué les deparará el destino ahora que saben toda la verdad...?! El dibujo esta bien, no es espectacular pero cumple y los personajes, ya está claro quienes serán los protas. La verdad es que promete... Valoración: 8/10
Woooooow what a PROMISING start! So far this manga has already surpassed my expectations. The prison escape mystery horror kind of story is definitely what I need in my life right now! The dynamic between Emma, Norman and Ray is my favorite thing about this series. The art is quite simplistic yet expressive and aesthetically pleasing, the plot is captivating, the pacing is just right. I’m hooked fam!
QUÉ BUENA LECTURA, me agarró totalmente desprevenida (recomiendo empezar a leerlos a ciegas, sin saber nada de antemano, para más placer). Es mi primera experiencia real leyendo manga, y de verdad, no tiene desperdicio. No voy a reseñar todos los volúmenes, así que voy a dar un vistazo de lo que promete el primero, y haré una reseña completa cuando lea el último.
Las portadas fueron el primer engaño. No sabía el género ni la sinopsis de los mangas antes de empezar, por lo que asumí que era una historia soft y tierna sobre las aventuras de un grupo de amigos, algo simple, relajante y colorido. Ilusa.
La trama que nos plantea es tan buena, compleja y sombría que quedé en shock. Se va revelando capa a capa, rodeada de misterios, y no hay forma de saber hacia dónde te va a llevar. Los personajes son preciosos y adorables, quiero abrazarlos a todos, pero también muy inteligentes: van 10 pasos por delante nuestro, y solo tienen entre 5 y 12 años (¿quién no ama a un protagonista astuto? Y aquí hay más de uno). El desarrollo que van teniendo Emma, Norman (mi bebé) y Ray es increíble, tan acertado que te llegan y te hacen sentir la historia más intensamente.
Y lo mejor: los plot twist. MUERO por esta clase de giros, no solo imprevisibles sino TOTALMENTE INGENIOSOS, impresionantes. Estoy escribiendo esto habiendo leído hasta el volumen 4, y no deja de sorprenderte en ningún momento. El autor y los personajes tienen una reserva inagotable de secretos y ases bajo la manga. Juega todo el tiempo con la atención del lector, contando los hechos de cierta forma que te centres en algo y te golpees la cara contra lo que no estabas viendo. Está calculado de forma muy detallada, sin un solo descuido, y te deja alucinando. Las ilustraciones no fueron una novedad para mí porque estoy habituada al anime, y no tengo punto de comparación con otros mangas, pero me gustan mucho. Las expresiones faciales son muy llamativas (algo perturbadoras, a veces).
Estoy amando (y sufriendo) muchísimo esta lectura. Las expectativas están muuuy altas, confío en que no me decepcione. Procedo a devorar los siguientes volúmenes y no sé qué esperan para hacer lo mismo.
Kids, demons, a dystopian world. Sure sounded like an interesting premise, but... Maybe it's just not for me. The storytelling is incredibly repetitive, survival is presented like some Hercule Poirot mystery, and it's all just a bit drab. I might have liked this as a child - but it didn't keep me interested enough now. I felt like DNFing quite a few times, and even while being manga, what with a page taking me no longer than 10 seconds, if even that, I still couldn't read fast enough. Not going to be following through with this series.
I thank the publisher for an early copy in exchange to my honest review.
Yeessss I was hoping this would take a turn for the worse after they showed how the kids had numbers tattooed on their necks. Very dark, just how I've been liking my fantasy lately.
En cierta manera me ha dado mucha ternura el volver como a "conocer" a Emma, Norman y Ray, y el cómo se dan cuenta de las cosas No puedo no resaltar ese momento que tanto me encantó en el anime y también aquí, cuando Norman dice que quiere a Emma y que quiere verla sonreír, por muy loca que suene la idea de ella, él la apoya incondicionalmente 🥺 y eso ha podido conmigo tanto en el anime como aquí 🦋 Sin duda lo he disfrutado muchísimo, y tengo ganas de ver si se vuelve todo mucho más turbio ^_^
Esta es la tercera serie de manga que me he propuesto leer entera, después de "Jigokuraku" y "Spy x Family". Jigokuraku ya la terminé, y Spy x Family está en curso y no hay nuevos volúmenes para comprar. Y como el terror es uno de mis géneros favoritos, me pareció lógico comenzar con esta serie. Desgraciadamente, entré con algunos spoilers-fue mediante el spoiler que descubrí la serie en primer lugar. Pero no sé el final, ni qué sucede con los protagonistas. Solo era un spoiler relacionado a un giro de la trama que ocurre en el primer volúmen. Lo primero que puedo decir es que, para el que entra sin conocerlo, el giro es brutal y efectivo. La historia comienza en un espacio aparentemente idílico: un orfanato en la campiña, pacífico y bucólico, donde unos niños llevan vidas felices con su cuidadora, a quien solo llaman "mamá". Pero claro que es solo eso, la apariencia, y la realidad que acecha detrás cae sobre el lector como una roca. Este relato tiene reminiscencias de los cuentos de hadas muy presentes en la cultura popular. Su título podría traducirse como "La Tierra de Nunca Jamás prometida", lo que obviamente remite a Peter Pan... una historia sobre niños que nunca crecen. Y la trama recuerda inevitablemente a Hansel y Gretel. Es un fuerte comienzo, y quiero ver adónde va la historia en los siguientes volúmenes. Una advertencia: algunas escenas (apenas una páginas en un volúmen de 200) no son para todos los estómagos.
It finally ends. I'd been following this manga since the beginning so it felt good following it till the end. I loved the characters and the storyline. My only complain is how the story became convoluted after the Goldy pond Arc. The mangakas started pulling off things willy nilly. Imo the story could've ended 20-25 chapters short. Overall a great psychological thriller shounen manga.
I recently watched the anime and by watched I mean obsessively binged, I was so disappointed by the end but was utterly elated to see in the comments everyone saying the manga is better, so here I am… bought the whole box set! So far so good, I’m loving it.
