An Introduction to Service Design: Designing the Invisible

Rate this book
A comprehensive introduction to designing services according to the needs of the customer or participants, this book addresses a new and emerging field of design and the disciplines that feed and result from it.

Despite its intrinsic multidisciplinarity, service design is a new specialization of design in its own right. Responding to the challenges of and providing holisitic, creative and innovative solutions to increasingly complex contemporary societies, service design now represents an integrative and advanced culture of design. All over the world new design studios are defining their practice as service design while long established design and innovation consultancies are increasingly embracing service design as a key capacity within their offering.

Divided into two parts to allow for specific reader requirements, Service Design starts by focusing on main service design concepts and critical aspects. Part II offers a methodological overview and practical tools for the service design learner, and highlights fundamental capacities the service design student must master. Combined with a number of interviews and case studies from leading service designers, this is a comprehensive, informative exploration of this exciting new area of design.

Service design isn't necessarily new; complex systems have been a part of interaction design ever since design involved computer systems. Lucy Suchman for instance saw the introduction of early technology in the workplace as an indicator of the need for a wholistic understanding of their human impact.

Often design simply needs a reintroduction and deepening of concepts in relation to new technologies. Mobile technologies introduce the concept of environment, of course, but as this book indicates the technical part of interactions are increasingly becoming invisible..or nearly so...we interact with technologies as touchpoints.

Books like these are needed as we need to design for this invisibility: in the instance of a self-driving car we may only interact when something goes wrong, or as a start to an experience; we may need confirmation along the way and we may have new possibilities; all of this implies a living with technology in a way that's deeper.

There are some excellent methods in this book however the book focuses too much on case studies. Case studies in technology books are tricky; they can quickly seem outdated. What was needed was some discussion on the social implications of our new technical future. Sociology is such a close relation to UX and human computer interaction as is physiology. Having these perspectives would have led to an understanding of how design methods need to evolve.

The good news is there is opportunity for writers wanting to explore this area: a book is very much needed for a book on designing invisible technologies that gives the reader a strong basis of the human impact of new technologies. If you are looking for some methods this book will work but it lacks the important context needed to greater understanding.

An delicious book. Your content bring an broad, but not few important, and detailed about the Service Design. Lara translate with precise words that amazing discipline that i love called Service Design, step-by-step.

I recommend that read for that search an knowledge lateral about service design, but if you are a Senior Service Designer or Senior UXer, not recommend totally. There is another books to complement this kind of knowledge.

As an introduction to the idea of service design, this book should be a no-brainer on the list of things to read. It's a text book, so there are obviously parts that will feel like they drag a little, and the end-of-chapter exercises won't help you much if you're not actively working on a project, but that's still beside the point. Definitely worth the time if you want to explore the subject.

This book is well designed but lacking depth. Might be good start to get some general knowledge what process of service design entails.
