Meeting while investigating the disappearance of two teenage girls? It doesn’t sound ideal, but for some people it works. Unlocking Fear tells the story of Noah Kendall and Reese Woodward; he returns home after twelve years of military service, she’s a summer visitor. There’s love and an unsolved missing teens case, I need to know more!
“The light touch of Noah’s hand on her lower back chased away all the stress that had settled in her muscles. It was as if her ears popped after a long flight in midair.”

After twelve years of being a soldier Noah is back in his hometown, and not just to visit. He’s ready to settle down and is going to restore one of the old, empty farms on the outskirts of town. Noah knows it will be a lot of hard work, but he doesn’t mind at all; his own house in his hometown is something he really wants. Seeing Reese is a bit of a distraction he doesn’t need, but spending time with her isn’t that bad.

Reese, a school teacher, hasn’t come to the town of Blyth Lake for just the summer holidays. Eleven years ago, her cousin Sophie has disappeared, and somehow her case seems to be related to the one of Emma, a girl from Blyth Lake who also went missing. Sophie meant a lot to her, and Reese needs to know what happened. She knows she’s only in town for the summer, but she can’t stay away from Noah.
“His blue eyes drifted down to her lips, which she parted involuntarily in anticipation. Her heart raced, and she had to tighten the grip on the mug in her hand to keep from dropping it.”

Unlocking Fear is the first book in the new ‘Keys to Love Series’, and introduces the reader to the Kendall Family and the small town of Blyth Lake. This first book is about Noah and Reese, the other books will follow his siblings. The story is told in third person, from a double POV. While each book is about a different couple, the unsolved case of Sophie and Emma is an important theme throughout the series.

I have to admit; Unlocking Fear was not what I expected. But as soon as I changed my mindset, I was hooked. Not only did I wanted to know what was going to happen between Noah and Reese, but I also needed to know more about those two missing girls. How can they have disappeared without a trace and what was the connection between them? It took a bit of time before things started to heat up between Reese and Noah, but given the circumstances it made it all the more realistic.
“Only one reason matters, Reese Woodward, and that is I love you.” “It took you long enough.”

4.5 Star Review Unlocking Fear by Kennedy Layne (Keyes To Love #1)
Wow Kennedy Layne is off to a flying start with Unlocking Fear, the first book in her latest series. I was riveted from the first to the last chapter as I tried to second guess what was going to happen.
After finishing his military service Noah Kendall returns to Blyth Lake to settle down. Thanks to an inheritance he knew nothing about he becomes the proud owner of a run-down property and decides to renovate it himself. Little does he know that this will be the start of a nightmare where danger will lurk around every corner.
I love the romantic suspense genre and this was an good example; well written with characters who were easy to relate too. Reese Woodward is the women who captures not only Noah’s heart but the interest of a killer. She is using her holidays to investigate and find out what happened so many years ago to her young cousin Sophia. Reese is positive that there is a link between the disappearance of Emma, a resident of Blyth Lake who went missing the year before and Sophia.
When Reese begins her search, she immediately gets the residents hackles up. She is renting the house next door to Noah for the summer and the sparks fly between them. Reese knows that it can only be a Summer fling, but despite that she is drawn to Noah and their sizzling chemistry. When Reese is attacked, Noah is determined to move in and protect her but will he be successful?
Be prepared that not all your questions will be answered in Unlocking Fear and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Bah.Nothing happened in this book. There was insta-love and I thought atleast suspense would be there regarding who killed Sophia and Emma but nothing of that sort happened(except for the part where someone shoots the deputy on duty). This is going to be dragged till the last book.
Attack on Reese was not done with a malicious intent.
I think the author just wanted to checkmark all the ingredients for a romantic suspense book

Unlocking Fear by Kennedy Layne
“An intriguing start to a new series, 4 stars”

Noah is home for good after years away in the service. He’s the first one back out of all his siblings, who are well on their way home as well. He’s from a small town where everyone is up in your business and it’s a great, safe little town. Only one negative thing has happened in twelve years, can’t beat that right? When he gets home he discovers thanks to his dad he has a new project. This project will give him something to build his new life on. Only he and Reese discover something a little more sinister.
Reese’s cousin went missing twelve years ago. She has always wanted closure and decided to spend the summer in the little town her cousin did the summer before she disappeared. When Reese starts asking questions it puts some people up in arms. Because as we all know you don’t drudge up the past in a small town without stepping on toes. She finds a friend in Noah and confides in him about her thoughts, and when a body is discovered the whole town holds their breath.
Like most Layne stories this one is full of mystery, suspense, and a touch of love. I loved how strong these two were, Noah wanting to keep Reese safe and Reese wanting to find the truth. No one knows who the killer is but one thing is certain there is or was one right under their nose. I was sucked into the story and wanted more even after it ended. I have so many unanswered questions that I just hope get solved throughout the rest of the series as it goes.

3 suspenseful stars for UNLOCKING FEAR.

Noah Kendall's glad to be back in Blyth Lake after serving in the Marines, even more so when he meets vacationer Reese Woodward. Reese is in town to see what she can discover about the disappearance of her cousin 11 years ago. She believes it's related to another local missing girl and aims to prove it. When she and Noah find a body in the house he's inherited, the two of them find out quickly that folks aren't too pleased to have secrets resurface that are better off left buried.

The part of me who loves romantic suspense completely dug UNLOCKING FEAR, the first book in the Keys to Love series. The part of me who hates cheesy romantic scenes rebelled every time I saw something like this:

"You're like a sip of fresh lemonade on a sweltering day, Reese Woodward. I just can't get enough."

Or this:

She was like a woman in the desert, and she had to have that tall drink of cool water.

So yea, while I enjoyed the suspenseful story and likable characters, I'm less convinced of the merits of those characters' thoughts and words. I'm not sure I really want to delve into anymore Blyth Lake secrets, since this wasn't a book I truly fell in love with. That said, fans of old fashioned romance will likely fall in love with this read.

Bottom Line: No OM/OW or sharing; condom use; no BDSM/kink; no sexual assault; violence and murder.

Love the new series. The ongoing mystery is going to be awesome. The love story is steamy. The story keep me on the edge of my seat and every time I think I knew who the bad guy was I was wrong. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Series Blurb: Their homecoming wasn’t so welcoming. Four brothers and one sister each gave twelve years of their lives to serve their country and fulfill their family’s legacy of service. As each of them return to their home of record, they weren’t prepared for what awaited them—an unforgivable sin that has been hidden for twelve long years.
Secrets and lies are concealed in the dark shadows of the very town they were raised in, and the Kendall family will have no choice but to rely on one another to unravel the sinister evil that they all hold the keys to unlock.
This is the first in a series of an interlocking story Arc. Noah Kendall is the first of his siblings to return home from his stint in the Marines. Much to his surprise his father gives him the keys to Yonder’s Farm a place that hosted many teenage parties when empty.
When Noah and Reese meet the sparks fly, learning that Reese is asking questions about her Cousin Sophie’s disappearance twelve years previously. After being attacked, Noah moves in with her to protect her.
Helping Noah at his new house to keep busy. Unfortunately when using a sledgehammer to knock down a wall they discover a body in the wall which begins a murder hunt, and tension builds while they wait for the identity to be revealed.
A sexy romance with plenty of action, as well as dead bodies and a murderer in the midst of this small community of Blyth Lake where you think you know everyone.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Author starts the mystery right away so be prepared.

When we’re first introduced to Noah Kendall it’s to a sense of home and family – it certainly had me thinking about the times while I was growing up. Reese Woodward is sniffing out a mystery. I love a good mystery since I can never solve them. Would make a lousy detective. I’ll stick with jigsaw puzzles instead. I hope you’re better at figuring it out. Although this is what makes me turn the page – not being able to figure out the mystery.

If it weren’t for the creepiness surrounding the town, I’d love to check it out. I have relatives that live in Maine and I just got that laid back, friendly people vibe that I love. Like the ode to those in the military – especially when more than one sibling is serving (thank you for your service). The author takes the time at creating this community and the people in it. Makes it very easy to have a movie play out in my mind. If it ever did become a movie I would definitely watch it and see how much it matches what I have in my head.

I liked how the author kept the mystery in the forefront of the story. Felt I was right there with Reese trying to figure out what happened some years ago. It was nice that Noah was there for her to lean on and help as things start to unfold. The author adds in the natural progression of a relationship as they spend more time together. If you don’t keep reading you’ll miss the twist that the author sneaks in and that made it a game changer for me. How could I put the book down now? I had to see where this was going to take me. And I found that the author left me two endings. One ending was a conclusion but the other ending left me wanting to get a hold of Unlocking Secrets to see where this story was going.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I really enjoyed this first book in a new series that is sure to be a hit!

Reese Woodward is spending the summer in Blyth Lake searching for a connection between the disappearance of her cousin, Sophia, and Blyth Lake native, Emma. The two missing girls had spent a week together years ago at summer camp and Reese is convinced there is a connection between the disappearances. What she isn’t looking for is Noah Kendall. Noah is home after serving a few years in the military.

The chemistry between Noah and Reese is a little hard to believe at first but that quickly changes and I was rooting for them all the way. I hope this couple makes cameos in the rest of the series. I want to watch their relationship continue to grow and deepen.

While this story is a shorter one, it didn’t feel like it. We get so much detail, and quite a bit of action considering the smaller page count. The introduction of the Kendall family was perfect. A lot of times, I feel the introductions to books, especially when they are setting up a new series, are drawn out with too much detail. That was not the case with this book and I am so glad! It helped to set up everything with the perfect amount of detail allowing to connect better with the characters and the story.

From the prologue, which captivated me instantly, all the way through the twist that had me shocked, and the ending, that left me with questions, I was sucked into this book. I can’t wait to see what happens in the books to come. The other Kendall siblings are sure to be captivating and the mystery is sure to deepen.

I can’t wait for the next book in this series! There are so many questions I need answers too!

Grateful to have received a complimentary ARC copy to honestly review.

Unlocking the secret of a missing cousin

Cassie came to town looking for her missing cousin. Who disappeared twelve years ago. Sophia was last seen at camp but then was thought to have runaway. She figured she would ask around town if anyone remembered Emma and Sophia. She wanted to know what happened to both girls.
Noah had just come home from the service and was given the Yoder Farms, house, and barn by his mother. She bought it before she passed.
His father, Gus, surprised him with the gift. Noah decided to restore what he could and knock down the rest.
He got to meet Reese and had her come to keep him company at his new house. He asked her if she wanted to help knock down some walls. But never figuring out what they would find in between the drywall. A body was found.
Reese now has to fear for her life. She has been attacked or chased twice. Is she getting too close? Noah is going to stay with her and protect her. He's falling for her. He doesn't want her to leave after the summer is over.
Great story of suspense and a young couple looking for answers to her cousins disappearance.
Great story by Kennedy Layne

Received this book this morning and have not been able to put it down until I read the final words this afternoon. This is the start of what looks to be another fantastic series from Kennedy Layne and I have already preordered the rest of the books in the series on the strength of this one.

This is a murder mystery, suspense, love story and family saga all rolled into one and set in small town America. Noah is a returning son of the town following his time serving his country. Reece is a teacher on holiday looking for answers into the disappearance of her cousin years before. The chemistry between the two is quick to develop but believable. The small town mentality is all there but not in that sickly cloying way of some stories and we are kept guessing throughout as to who the killer is.

There is a HEA but the bigger picture has yet to be completed which I am not sorry about as there are some great characters in the book still to be developed. Thank goodness we have the delivery dates for the rest of the series. I can't wait.

Noah has returned home after serving his country for 12 years. When his father gives him a old farmhouse on the edge of town he is looking forward to completing the renovations however he never expected the surprises that it would hold.

Reese is a school teacher who has come to Blyth Lake for the summer to investigate the disappearance of her cousin Sophie 11 years ago. She has drawn the ire of the townspeople with her questions but she is not about to give up.

Reese and Noah are neighbors so when danger surrounds her he moves in to protect her and they start to work on his home together however when the secrets that the house holds are revealed and now they need to find out the truth before it is too late.

The suspense and twists draw you in and keep you enthralled until the last page. This is the first book of a new series so even though there are still unanswered questions each book features a separate couple with their own story. I voluntarily Reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Something terrible happened 12 yrs ago in the small midwest town of Blythe Lake...a teen girl went missing without a trace. Now school teacher, Reece, has returned for the summer to see if there’s a connection between the missing girl and her cousin’s disappearance 11 yrs ago. These girls had attended the same summer camp.
Ex-marine, Noah Kendall has returned home after serving numerous tours in the military. He’s ready to live the rest of his life. His plans are made easier when his dad gifts him a piece of property...the same old farm where Noah and his high school friends had held bonfire parties. Noah is intrigued by his neighbor, who has rented the cabin for the summer and strikes up a friendship. When Noah and Reece discover a body inside the wall of his house things take an interesting turn. Someone doesn’t want Reece asking questions. Can Noah keep Reece safe while they figure out what happened to the young girl? Is there an HEA in store for this pair?
The mystery isn’t solved in this book so on to book 2!

Unlocking the fear is a 5 star read!

Noah returns home after being in the military for the past twelve years and when he does his father has a wonderful surprise for him! However, the surprise holds a secret which has been hidden for twelve years and someone wants to keep it that way! Reese is looking for answers about her cousin Sophia, who went missing eleven years ago - a year after Emma - and she believes they are connected in some way. What Reese wasn’t looking for was a sexy former military man who would knock the breath from her, but once they uncover this secret, fear creeps in and both Noah and Reese keep each other close and in turn fall for the other:)

Fantastic read and beautifully put together by Kennedy! Be aware that this is a continuing story and each will be about a different couple but the murder mystery will continue throughout until they find all the clues to solve it!

Unlocking Fear is the first book in the Keys to love series and is not completely stand-alone. The next book will feature a different couple, but the whole killer plotline is still unresolved. In this book, we just dived deeper into the story, but we don't know half the truth yet. I am ok with that though. At least the couple got a happy ending and we will see them more in the book I hope. At this point, I think it's best to wait for all the books to be released before you begin the series, especially if you are curious.

Noah and Reece were a good couple. They had good chemistry and they worked well together. I liked both of them. The book is a good beginning for the series and it gets the reader into the setting of the small town without overwhelming the reader and just giving the right amount of information. I enjoyed the book and I'll keep an eye on the next books because I don't want to miss the story. I would recommend it.

What a great start to a new series...and this is a new to me author as well. Noah and Reece are so great together and the small town with the gossips makes this book even better. I love a good romantic suspense and this one does not disappoint.

Sparks instantly fly between these two and I loved every minute of their relationship forming. I love both Noah and Reece separately so together it is DY-NA-MYTE!

The story flows nicely, I love the mystery/suspense of it, and you are left seeing why this is a series and not just one book...(even if THIS couple gets their HEA). This book to me was a pretty quick read and it does leave you with questions that hopefully get answered as we continue this series. But despite the questions at the end (which honestly I expect in a series) I found this a very enjoyable, keep you on the edge of your seat read.

First in this series

Reese comes to Blyth Lake to find out what happened to her cousin. Noah was in the Marines and just returned home. His father and mother purchased him a house that needs renovating. Reese is renting a house just down the road from Noah. After having seen someone in the woods put back, Reese is shaken up. Noah gets her to help him tear down a wall. They discover a body inside. While DNA tests are being done, Reese is attacked in a bathroom at the beach. Noah stays with her to keep her safe. But things start to heat up between them. Reese is supposed to go back to her teaching job in Illinois at the end of summer but as fallen for Noah. Can they find out who’s after her and what happened to her cousin?
Cliffhanger. Suspense and a little steamy. Couple of grammar errors. Otherwise pretty good book,

Book 1 in the Keys to Love Series features Reese Woodward and Noah Kendall. Reese spends the summer in Blyth Lake looking to find a connection between the disappearance of her cousin, Sophia and Blyth Lake native Emma. Her questions have the locals on edge but she’s sure there is some connection between them. Noah just moved back home to Blyth Lake and starts to renovate an old home next to where Reese is staying. The heat between them is caused by more than just the summer sun. When they make a gruesome discovery together, they find themselves in the middle of a murder investigation. You won’t be able to put this book down until the very last page. Not quite a cliffhanger, but you won’t get all your questions answered in this book. Cannot wait until the next one!

At 220 pages, to me, this felt like a short, but nevertheless, enjoyable read.

The introduction to the family which will form the backbone of this series didn't impact the enjoyment of the story, rather it unfolded in an organic manner which underpinned, and was essential to, the core of the plot.

The chemistry between Noah and Reese was written with confidence and skill - but the underlying story arc didn't at all play second fiddle to the romance.  I was kept guessing about the identity of the villain of the piece - just when I thought I knew who it was, I got turned about again.

All together, a competent and involving romantic suspense.  I look forward to reading about the other siblings.

This is the first book of Kennedy Layne’s that I have read. It’s very well written. But, the writing style didn’t mesh well with me. The story, and the mystery, kept me reading though.

I liked both Noah and Reese.

Reese finds herself in town, on vacation. But, she’s using this time to see if there is a connection between her cousin Sophia’s disappearance and the disappearance of Emma.

Noah is freshly out of the military and he’s back home for good. He got a big surprise from his dad for his homecoming.

And that surprise just gave more surprises.

Who knew what those walls were holding.

I was expecting that twist.

I am curious as to what will happen in the next books.

This is a good start.

This is my first one for this author with my mind wondering how I missed her before seeing alot of her novels are ones I would of read. The location is one that breathes suspense with this author delivering just that. This centers around Noah and Reese whom are also in the middle of a investigation that has you so intrigued you do not want to let go of this one. You too are trying to guess what the secrets are too. Romance not skimped at either it is in here. It is a slow simmer with other aspects to this story. I had to remember though this is the first one with more to follow hoping I do not miss them.

The search for answers has me hooked

The crime is old, but the desire for answers is still fresh. This is the first in a series and I enjoyed how the details were shared throughout the story. There is a romance, but it is not the star of the show and does not detract from the search for answers. The characters are engaging and some are down right adorable. The community is unique and the questions of who is guilty and what actually happened are never ending! We don’t have an answer at the end of this book but we are closer and I can’t wait to find out the new clues in the next book.

The start of an amazing new romantic suspense series from Kennedy Layne! I've become recently introduced to her writing in the last few months and she is definitely another one of my reads when I need a little more suspense and crime in with my romance.

Noah (and eventually his brothers) are moving back home to town after their stints in various branches of the military. So already I'm a huge fan - I love me a military story. Reese has moved to town to try and solve one if not two of the most notorious town disappearing cases. Of course sparks fly all while trying to solve the case.

Definitely will be keeping an eye on this series! I can't wait to meet Noah's brothers!

I love this new series! Noah and Reese’s book is a perfect start. There is mystery, murder, an Alpha military man and nosey town folks. Little towns always have their secrets and Blyth Lake is no different. Reese is vacationing in a cabin rental and asking questions about her cousin who disappeared 11 years ago. Noah is returning home after serving as a Marine and is remodeling a house he just acquired right next to the rental cabin. These 2 meet and sparks fly and lots of things happen. You really really need to read this book!

Such a great book.
A tragedy has plagued this small town for 12 long years, when a nosey city girl comes to dig and see id there is any connection between their mystery and hers.
A weird turn of events gives her the answers she is seeking while leaving so many more unanswered questions.
I can’t wait to see what the next book holds.

Great Start

What a great start to the series. Noah and Reese uncover a horrible secret, 12 years in the making. But in uncovering this terrible action, they find something better, love. I enjoyed the family aspect of this book. The small town vibe worked well for the main characters and the secondary storyline of pure evil.

Outstanding beginning for this new series !

Kennedy Layne has written a beautiful love story, surrounded by mystery and murder. The storyline and characters come together, and the result is your little hometown, with all your family and friends that have their own secrets that they would kill to keep quiet. A fantastic series you won't want to miss.
