“I never thought I could want anyone as much as I wanted Nash, then I met you”~Royal
“What if I told you, you'd never have to choose?”~Zade
When I was sixteen I was afflicted with a terrible curse...I fell in love with my straight best friend. I never thought I’d move past my feelings for Nash and find someone who could love me in return, until the day a gorgeous marine plopped himself down in my chair and asked me to ink him. I’m falling fast for Zade, but my feelings for Nash are still very real. When life starts getting complicated and Nash speaks the words I never thought I’d hear, the only thing I want is for us to find a way to make this work...together.
**Every book in the Heathens Ink series can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s way more fun to read them in order. This is an MMM romance with lots of sexy fun and a guaranteed HEA
K.M.Neuhold has long since been a romance junkie. When she’s not writing she’s reading or spending time snuggling with her husky or her husband. She fell in love with M/M romance last year and hasn’t been able to turn back. There’s nothing she loves more than love in all its forms.
Royal and Zade's pairing was pretty much anything but a slow burn, with a pre-date, then an actual date, with steam off the charts from that point on.
However, what I really liked was the slow burn with Nash, as he saw his best friend and the new boyfriend begin to bond on more than a sexual level. He wasn't jealous, more envious, and didn't want to be left behind. I also loved how he never had a hetero freakout.
The story was definitely high on sex, which was tiptoeing up to the line of too much for me, but the poly relationship was handled in a way that felt pretty organic and believable.
What I did feel was entirely unnecessary in the story was the introduction of Liam, Royal's long lost half-sibling. To me, it felt like a distraction and only served as a setup for a future story, which left me pretty bored.
The part at the end with the rescue dog also felt like a not-so-effective attempt to pull at the reader's heart strings.
I'd rate it at around 3.5 stars and would 'mostly' recommend it due to the humor and intermittent quick jabs of snark from Royal.

Yeah, I'm tapping out at 56%. This is just not how I like my ménages. Basically up until this point, it's been a book about Zade and Royal with Nash coming to terms with having sexual feelings for his best friend, Royal. Nash's feelings don't even come out until 50ish percent and then everyone is hunky-dory with a ménage relationship. Nope...
I have been looking forward to this book ever since I finished Rescue Me a couple of months ago. I loved that book, there was just something about it that drew me in. And I couldn't wait to see how this one turned out, how Nash, Royal and Zade finally ended up together.
I'm sad to say that this book didn't live up to my expectations.
My first issue was the constant change of POV. I mean, I get that there are three of them and that you want to tell all of their stories, but please make each section longer, at the very least let them have their own chapters. It's not necessary (or wanted) to see each scene from multiple POV's. It takes away from the story and you never really emerge into the book.
Another thing that bugged me was how quickly everything happened. I mean I can kinda see Royal and Zade moving quickly with their insta-lust and also Royal-Nash with their history. But the three-way relationship wasn't natural to me. It felt really rushed and forced, but strangely also drama and angst-free. I'm not one for unnecessary drama or angst, but you'd think there would be some bumps along the road when starting this kind of relationship. I wanted more of a connection between them, outside the bedroom.
I also wanted to see a lot more of the side characters, more of the Heathens Ink. They had such a connection and played a great part in the first book and I was missing the boys in this one.
*Fingers crossed for deeper connections Adam's story*
This one doesn't have as many grammatical errors as the first one and the plotting is tighter without the angsty setting of the first.
The polyamorous element to the story is well crafted, I felt it was believable that these three men would come together in a three way romantic relationship.
There's no real dramady to this one either, making it a much lighter and fun read and the sexual side of things is also done well.
EDIT: I just remembered one thing which did annoy me - referring to a Marine as a soldier. Nope, they're Navy not Army.
**** #2 in the Heathens Ink series, where we watch as the group of guys find their life partner or partners. These are completely fascinating, gripping, and sexual. GFY, Threesome, attempted suicide, transgender, and custody. * Royal is a tattoo artist at Heathens Ink, and has been best friends with Nash since they were teens. * Blue-eyed Nash is straight, but after a drunk kiss with Royal, he's re-thinking his choices. * Big hunky, buzzed crew cut Zade, 29, is two weeks out of the Marine Corps and crashing at Thane and Maddox's place temporarily.
He gets a tattoo from Royal, and the friendship and pursuit begins. Zade and Royal begin dating, and Nash, muscled and inked with long blonde hair in a bun, wants both Zade and Royal. Royal has been in love with Nash forever. Nash feels the pull, and wants both men, but is apprehensive. Zade is interested in both men.
There are stories of coming out, deep inner musings, then there's a stranger who is a relative, custody issues, attempted suicide, and lots of wonderful advice and direction with complete acceptance.
A beautifully written tale with special topics we are happy to learn about. There's some teary moments, too. I loved the hot sexiness, one on one, and threesome male action, and Nash's first M/M everything.
We get some answers, and have questions about the characters in this whole series, but we know there is more to look forward to.
3.5 for this installment- I enjoyed this and loved the building chemistry between Zade, Royal & Nash. Again things seem to fall into place easily so I'm guessing there's a bit of "cheesy romance " in this authors style. I didn't mind, I found it cute ! Not sure about the whole Liam scenario, again things were too sudden, too easy. Will I continue with this series when book 3 comes out ? Yes ! But I know what to expect
Looking for a sweet and sexy hot M/M/M romance without any miscommunication drama getting in the way of your fluffy romantic good time?
I loved that there really isn't any big drama about the threesome that happens. Royal and Zade get together and it's pretty organic how Nash realizes he's in love with Royal. Zade being poly and willing to share makes all the difference to them making a go of it together so Royal doesn't have to choose between the guy he's fallen in love with and the guy he's loved, but never thought he could have, since childhood.
This is a really sweet, fluffy, sexy hot, low angst, low drama romance. I'm really glad I took a chance on this series and I can't wait to see what happens with Adam in the next book!
Note for the sticklers: There are a few editing/proofing errors, but not so bad it impacted my enjoyment of the story.
GOING COMMANDO was so much fun and all three of these guys were perfect heroes for me. There's some overlap of events from the first book in the series but you can read this one on its own, though it will spoil RESCUE ME so keep that in mind. Zade has recently left the military and is staying with his friend Thane when he's introduced to Royal. The first half of the book is focused mostly on Royal and Zade's growing relationship as a two person couple. Royal has always loved Nash but with Zade he finds someone he thinks he could move on with. These two were a lot of fun together, between their goofiness, their bets and challenges, and their love of life in general, they were great to read. And in the bedroom they were on fire because holy cow these two know how to have fun!
While Royal grows closer to Zade, Nash begins to realize he's not as straight as he always thought. Royal and Nash have been best friends since birth -- always there for each other, protecting each other, and even occasionally engaging in threesomes with women. But now, Nash is having unexpected dreams about his best friend and sometimes his best friend's boyfriend. It takes a bit for Nash to figure himself out and realize what's going on but I loved that he never shied away from what he felt, it just takes him by surprise.
Luckily for Royal, Zade is polyamorous and encourages Royal to date Nash as well, but it quickly becomes clear that they're better all together. From that point, Nash jumps in with both feet with his newfound bisexuality and these three were all over each other. There's pretty much no angst or drama once Royal, Zade, and Nash start their relationship and I can't complain about that because sometimes I just want a soft and angst free romance. I also liked how Neuhold took the time to develop the connection between Zade and Nash and it never felt like Zade was the third wheel to the long time friends.
In addition to this fun and sexy triad, there's also the introduction of Liam and I can't wait to see him grow up, protected and cared for by all the rest of the Heathens.
Content Warning: teenage side character who is abused by a parent for being transgender and is misgendered several times by the parent and social workers; brief references to the following: a mass shooting, drug overdose, suicide, bullying, sexual assault covered up by the military.
This was a hot, hot story of Royal, Zade & Nash with a sweet low angst plot & fun play at dynamics & love me a vers throuple! 5/5 steam! While Chaotic Royal & Wild Zade were fast paced, Responsible Nash had a bit of slowburn but overall they are reacted well, even when I thought they should be more surprised lol. I found a couple typos, nothing that didn't let me enjoy tho. Last few chaps were building for future books This series sounds like a fun one, has it's focus on mental issues too.
DNF @ 78%. I liked this book at first, I mean hot boys and tattoos! What's not to like? It wasn't without issues though. The editing was kind of terrible, punctuation, wrong words, etc., but I overlooked it because I'm cool like that. I liked Royal, he made me laugh. I didn't read far enough to get his real name, so if anyone knows, tell me! lol. I don't want to read any further to find out.
I loved the friendship between Royal and Nash, and Royal and Zade were hot together. Then everything became too easy around 50%ish and suddenly we're a menage that all instantly love each other and the world is perfect!
But I persevered. Then, we are given some long lost sibling crap and some other drama ...
it kinda ruined the flow of the book for me. So yeah, I'm
I don't normally rate my DNFs but I've read enough of this one I think to do so. It wasn't terrible, but I didn't love it either.
Okay.... I skipped this one for so long because I am not a fan of mmm. Not even a little bit. I don't like sharing partners and I don't find poly relationships to be very believable. I know, I know... they work for some and I don't mean to hate on it.... just for me, it's a no-go. However, soooo many people have recommended this series to me... I bit the bullet and got over myself, and I actually kind of liked it.
Now, you'll know from the previous book, that Royal has been in love with his best friend Nash, since....always. Nash is straight though, right? They sometimes share girls, (which i freakin HATED), and once or twice Nash has let him go down on him, but other than that.... he had to love Nash from afar. For years.....and he accepted that....although it was hard for him. Who hasn't had unrequited love of some sort, eh?? Well, when Thane's old Marine buddy, Zade comes into town, looking for a new start, Madden introduces him to Royal out of jealousy that he might be setting his sites on Thane. Immature, but whatever, they hit it off.
Of course, the two guys are perfect for each other. They're silly and a lot alike and after one date turns into two, and Zade is so sweet and unexpected.... Royal can finally see himself loving someone else besides Nash. The love doesn't go away, but, maybe after time, right?
Probably.... but then Nash, who's never shown any interest in men before, let alone his best friend Royal.... is suddenly jealous and having lust filled dreams of his best friend. He's seeing him in a way that he never has before, and don't get me wrong... he's not jealous in the traditional way... no, he doesn't know who to be jealous of... Zade for getting Royal, or Royal for having Zade. He likes them both.
That's all fine and good with Zade, he's always been interested in multiple partners....exclusively of course, he doesn't mean sharing multiple partners for fun... he just has a lot of love to give, and I think that's what made the threesome so okay for me. Zade cared about Royal, but he also saw the way that Nash had taken care of Royal for so long, been there for him and cared about him....and that had him caring for Nash too. Of course, they were all attracted to each other, but, first and foremost, Zade just cared. He was sweet like that. He and Royal were so similar, that I felt like Nash balanced them out a bit and kept them in line.
It kind of annoyed me that Nash didn't see Royal like that until he was happy with someone else, and then he not only accepted that he was bi and liked men, to jumping into this relationship in the deepend so quickly and was just, okay with everything. I mean, really? No hesitation? No soul seeking? Just, alright... I've dated women all my life, let's give dudes a try.... and he had no idea that Royal had been in love with him, when he knew him better than anyone else? Either he was really self obsorbed or insanely clueless... I mean, everyone else knew....Even Zade, who didn't know the two from Adam when he first showed up.
Now, what I loved, was Liam and that whole storyline... I got surprised with that, I didn't see it coming, but I loved it. I understand it's going to be a mmm too, and again, I wanna say noooooooo.... but we'll see, I've already bought it, so... we'll see.
Liam is Royal's trans brother who he didn't know about. Coming to him after his dad treated him the same way he did Royal, all of the guys jump in and do everything they can to get Liam safe, keep him safe and help guide him to the boy he's always felt like. He's 16, and I'm so glad he had the guys to lean on... Although.... everything happening as fast as it did, is unheard of. It was like... you're my brother, move in, cut your hair, let's go right now and get you boy clothes, we're looking for bigger houses, let's get you into school, decorate your own room..... and it's like... whoa whoa whoa, calm down.... first of all... you have no legal rights to this minor yet... and though I knew and hoped that it would work out for them.... it just wasn't realistic in it's timeline to me. All Liam's dad would've had to do was come get him, and that would've been that, until Liam either ran away again, or the courts placed him with the guys.... BUT, I'm happy it worked out for all of them....even if the stupid family social worker was a bigoted, close minded, POS. Well handled boys.
Overall though, I didn't hate it, but I feel like that had everything to do with Zade...I'll keep going! I can't wait to see who's next! 4 stars from me.
"Li voglio entrambi in ogni modo possibile.
This was a fairly fun read, if you enjoy an awful lot of sex scenes. I wouldn’t have minded so much if the book was longer or paced better. The first half was moving okay, Nash coming to slowly accept his attraction to Royal, Royal and Zade dating, but at halfway through, nothing had moved forward with Nash and Royal, much less Zade, then it all starts moving way too fast and easily. Cramming in an unknown trans brother and custody battle into the last half, along with the actual threesome, ended up with everything being given very superficial treatment. Just too, perfect, too easy and no depth to the relationship at all. It was more like three frat bros and a teen. Plus, Madden and Thane’s story overlapped a bit into this one, so it’s just a mish-mash. If you want a fast moving, simplistic story with lots of steam, and no angst or worries, then it’s okay. Lots of little errors in editing but not enough to break up the reading experience.
This could've been much much better but lacked the depth needed for that to happen.
Sure, the copious amounts of sex scenes were okay(truth be told I skipped most of them) but the storyline was one dimensional and even the introduction of Liam further muddled the waters rather than lending it some substance.
I know the author's work has greatly improved since this series was penned so I might give the next book a try just to decide on the series as a whole.
I've already been addicted to K. M. Neuhold's male/female romance series the Sexy Nerd Boys, and now that I have moved with her into her new male/male romance series Heathens Ink, I am hooked! After getting down and dirty and taking us into very heavy subject matter in Rescue Me, K. M. Neuhold has given us a lighter and even steamier read with the second book in the series, Going Commando. This time we get not just two delicious heroes to fall for, but three! And if you think three is a crowd, you won't any longer after panting over Zade, Royal, and Nash and their sexy times in between the sheets!
Royal grabbed my heart from the moment he was introduced in Rescue Me. He is so charismatic, colorful, and full of life that a reader can't help but be completely and totally enamored with this colorful hero. After watching him pine over his straight best friend Nash, I couldn't wait to see Zade give him the happiness that he deserves. Then K. M. Neuhold sends all of our hearts racing when Nash is not as unattainable for Royal as he originally seemed. What if he didn't have to choose and could have them both?
Zade is all kinds of yumminess with his alpha male protective military ways. I could picture myself cuddling up with this solid wall of muscle and being cradled in his arms every night. Yes, I know he is Royal and Nash's man... but a girl can dream right? He is such a perfect compliment to the Royal/Nash unrequited love and angst that my heart couldn't take much more. I loved everything about Zade from his buzzed hair cut, gorgeous body, and carefree fun loving manner that often kept him and Royal up to no good. Luckily they had the equally good looking Nash to keep them out of trouble.
Nash is mouthwatering and complete intrigue all in one. I couldn't wait to get to the ooey gooey center of his heart and desires and experience every minute of his sexual awakening with Royal and Zade. I was beyond engrossed with all of his thoughts and what leads him into the arms of his two hunky men. Not to mention the whole sexy “daddy” vibe that keeps Royal and Zade begging for more and leaves the readers with an over active imagination and heated fantasies of what else these three could get up too.
K. M. Neuholds delivers another pulse pounding, desire laden, emotion roller coaster ride into the romance world that will leave you flushed and with a deeper yearning for more man on man on man action! I highly recommend Going Commando for triple the heart, heat, and men!! K. M. Neuhold never fails to hold my heart in the palm of her hands and craving more and more with every new book filled with amazing characters that she creates.
Books with polyamory, especially MMM, are something I gravitate towards. I love the "getting to know you" stuff, the emotional "figuring it all out" stuff and, of course, the complicated and sexy choreography in the bedroom. And while there was some of that here, this book was a lot more of a light and easy read than I was expecting after Rescue Me.
First of all, I did like all the characters. The flashbacks between Nash and Royal were really well done and let the reader in on their longtime friendship and how it was shaped and changed over time. I understood when Royal knew he couldn't keep hoping for something with Nash and that when Zade came into his life he went for it rather than pining. It was a really good start.
So why 3 stars?
These guys together are very much "guys being guys", for lack of a better description. There's banter about balls and lots of bets. There's inside water pistol fights and jokes about vaginas. I wouldn't necessarily say they were immature but with Nash and Royal being 23 and Zade being 29, I got more fun and frivolity between them than a romantic connection at times, even though I could definitely see how they complimented each other.
Also, after Nash explains his feelings and they all get together, everything else that comes across these guys paths is resolved too quickly. The whole storyline with stole all the tension from the story for me. It was a classic example where the MC Some people won't mind it, but it drives me bonkers because I need to see it, read it and feel it.
Oh dear. I have been enjoying the Ballsy Boys series by this author and had heard tons of good things about this book. I’m sad to say it didn’t work for me. The guys were sweet and fun but that was not enough to enjoy it.
-Too much insta love. -For it being a ménage book, the steamy parts were awkward and a little boring. I skimmed after a while. -The whole plot with Royal’s half brother was thrown in too late to be meaningful. -I don’t want high angst in ménage books but it was way too perfect for everyone, immediately.
2.5 stars. I was enjoying these 3 and how the whole MMM was unfolding. But then I got to about 70% and unfortunately the story went downhill for me and honestly was a struggle to finish and I ended skimming more than reading which was a shame because there was potential.
So this showed up on my wall today And I was like what? Can’t understand why I gave it two stars with the comment 2.5 when I had to fight my way through it. Anyway that’s changed now.
Going Commando is the second book in K.M. Neuhold's Heathens Ink series. It could be read as a standalone, but probably best to read them in order. Here's what's you can expect from Zade, Royal, and Nash:
💛 MMM contemporary romance 💛 First person triple point of view 💛 Guaranteed happily ever after 💛 Best friends to lovers 💛 Tattoo artists 💛 Retired Marine 💛 Found family
I didn't find this book quite as angsty as the first book in the series, but there's definitely lots of emotions happening! I thought the dynamics between Royal, Zade, and Nash were very individual. There was definitely a lot of mutual pining and sexual discovery as this book progressed, and I wasn't sure how it would pan out but these three made it work. I think what I struggled with was the pacing in this particular story. Zade and Royal begin dating almost immediately, but Royal still struggles with attraction and feelings towards his best friend, Nash. There was a lot of buildup throughout the majority of the book to the three of them being together, but once they were everything felt like it happened at breakneck speed. That last third of the book could've probably been slowed down a bit.
I really did like all the elements that were included in the book, especially the storyline with Liam. I love seeing different types of love and families depicted in my reading, so this was great. We also learned where Zade was while his best friend was struggling in the first book (one of my criticisms of Rescue Me) so I was happy to get that cleared up.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read. It's clear how far her writing has come since 2017 and I'm just happy to be along for the ride. These three were super sweet (and of course, oh so steamy) together and I can't wait to see where the series goes when I get back to it!
Another light angst fairy tale ending. I preferred this one to the first mainly because of the m/m/m and I really liked Zade. It felt too easy. Nash realised the truth and just went along with it. Royal had no issue seeing his father again and Zade was pretty much all in straight away. The dating was cute, the sex was plentiful. I was expecting the father to make trouble but it was dealt with ease.
I’m not sure how how I felt about the mother. She’s painted as this amazing character accepting Royal into the family etc but when it came to the confession, it felt like she didn’t care. She ignored Liam’s gender, hoped Royal dating Zade was a phase and walked away when learning her son was bi. Shitty or non caring parents seems to be a theme for this series.
Adam’s story next and I’m hoping it is a light one.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I read this despite not particularly enjoying book one of the series because I was curious about how things were going to go with Royal, Nash, and Zade. While this one was better than the Rescue Me, it wasn't particularly great. There were okay parts and parts that had me rolling my eyes, but I can't be bothered to go into detail about any of it. I guess the best way to put it is that I just really didn't care about any of the characters. I think that's what got me here and in the first book as well. I felt no attachment to them. Probably 3.5* for this one, but I'm not feeling kind enough to bump it to a 4*.
Again, I listened to the audiobook, and honestly Cooper North is probably what kept me interested.
