One Last First Date

Rate this book
Cassie Dunhill and her friends make a pact to marry the next guy they each date. What could possibly go wrong?

Cassie Dunhill is sick of dating. It’s been ten years and it’s time, time to find The One. It’s either that or buy a fetching habit and veil and abandon the whole thing. But Cassie believes in love, and she’s not ready to give up yet.

Cassie and her best friends make a pact that the next date they go on will be their One Last First Date. The pressure is on to find Mr. Right, and Cassie’s the first to find him: Parker Hamilton. He’s good-looking, smart, cultured—and a doctor. Despite his obvious credentials, Cassie’s not taking any chances. She’s vetted Parker so thoroughly she could offer some pointers to the CIA. Needless to say, he passes with flying colors.

Things get complicated when Will Jordan, her irritating work colleague, muscles in on her dream job and her love life. Will is a typical guy, complete with nicknames for everyone, even Cassie. His good looks and relaxed, easy nature can be distracting. But Cassie can do without that kind of distraction right now, no matter how good Will looks with his shirt off.

In the end, is there only One Last First Date?

Escape to New Zealand in this fun, feel-good chick lit story.

Like the delicious cakes the heroine and her besties indulge in at their favorite café, One Last First Date is a sweet, satisfying treat! I blew through this book in less than two days and was totally engrossed in the story from the very first page where Cassie Dunhill and her friends, Paige and Marissa, make a pact (in a very atmospheric setting) to get serious about finding their true loves, which means marrying the next guy each of them goes on a date with. Cassie is 100% sure she's found "The One" when she starts seeing Parker, a handsome, well-mannered doctor, who's everything she's ever wanted in a mate, but are they really right for each other? And what about her contentious relationship with her co-worker Will? Does she feel so passionately about him because she hates his guts, or is there something more going on?

Cassie's relationships with both of the guys in this book develop in unexpected ways, and the author throws in lots of obstacles and curveballs. Things are super messy and complicated on all sides. Parker's got snobby, judgemental parents and a perfect ex he can't seem to let go of while Will is vying for the same executive position at the telecom company where Cassie works and he's caught the eye of someone close to Cassie. She rides a roller coaster of emotions while dealing with all of these issues, along with her own conflicted heart. I'm not even going to pretend that I was unbiased in this love triangle. I was #TeamWill from the very beginning. First of all, he was described as looking like Poldark . . . SWOON! Secondly, I loved the way he got under Cassie's skin (the running joke about his nickname for Cassie and how it infuriated her never ceased to amuse me). And lastly, I thought Will was a really interesting, multi-faceted character. I loved that he kept surprising me throughout the book.

Not only was One Last First Date a great standalone story, it did a wonderful job of setting up the supporting characters (Paige, Marissa, and Bailey, the café owner) for their own tales in future books. I am really looking forward to seeing who those ladies end up with!

This is the first book I’ve read by Kate O’Keefe and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Cassie, Paige, and Marissa are best friends and make a pact they are only going to marry the next person they go with on a first date. I couldn’t handle that pressure!
Cassie is a great character. I wanted to be her new best friend and I cringed whenever she did anything embarrassing- something inevitable if you think you’re dating “the one.” I delighted in all of the characters; especially the men. The minute I read that Will looks like Poldark’s brother, I knew I was hooked.
Kate writes a great rom-com. It’s witty, romantic, and well written. Her vivid descriptions of the desserts at the Cozy Cottage Café made my mouth water. I want to go to Auckland and eat a slice of flourless chocolate and raspberry cake right now.
I am so glad this is the beginning of a series because I wanted to read more about Cassie’s friends, Paige, Marissa, and Bailey.
This is a fun, delightful and thoroughly enjoyable read!

Odd romance

This was the oddest romance I have read in a good long while. It had a few funny lines, and a tad of romance, so I guess it could be called a romantic comedy.
The problem is, the 'romance' part didn't show up til the 85% point. Then, only briefly. Then, romance reappeared briefly again at the 90% point.
The book ended shortly after that. So, a few funny lines of comedy. The world's shortest romance in what was otherwise a quite long book.
This was a definite 'no' for me, and a book I wouldn't recommend if you are looking for a really good romance. Or, a really good comedy, for that matter.

I wanted so desperately to love this. A kiwi author, a cute enemies to lovers romance SET IN AUCKLAND! Literally the place I live. But nothing about it felt kiwi and the characters were so flat and unrelatable.

Perhaps the author removed any sense of kiwi-ness in order to appeal to the international market? The only slang I came across was actually described as "australian slang" for the readers - and it was "dunny". All references to a mother were "Mom". Fizzy drink was called "soda".

The main character was a tragic social climber who was determined to have her perfect doctor from a rich family, despite feeling so ridiculously out of place. There was literally zero chemistry with her and her failed love interest which I'm sure was partially intentional by the author, but there was nothing to show why Cassie was SO invested in him other than sticking to the absurd pact (which she never seemed to question).

The real love interest was okay - but again, there was literally no chemistry there until the very end. As for the betraying of a best friend with almost no issues? Did not like that.

This story could literally be copied and pasted into any location and it would work. There was nothing in here to bring life to this vibrant city. Or the random jaunt down to the Hawkes Bay were literally nothing happens.

All in all, this story feels like a first draft (with a lot of potential) that needs some life breathed into it.

This was cute if a little silly. I wasn't a huge fan of the premise that a group of girlfriends make a pact to marry then next guy they date. Career-driven Cassie is fed up with dating and watching all her friends find love, get good jobs etc. She's determined to find the perfect guy and thinks she does in the form of hot doctor Parker. The catch, her new work colleague Will is driving her crazy and the line between hate and love might be thinner than she thought. Funny, good on audio with a fun accented narrator and perfect for fans of books like The hating game. This was my first Kate O'Keeffe and won't be my last.

One Last First Date by Kate O'Keeffe is the 1st book in the Cozy Cottage Cafe series, and a really fun book. Three friends are sick of dating the wrong man and make a pact to marry the next guy they date. This book contains Cassie Dunhill's story. Does her research plan go smoothly and is it really that easy? If you enjoy fun romances, I recommend this book. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, Two Last First Dates.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

What a fun read! A great beach read for the summer hands down!
Who isn't sick of dating?
Well Cassie, Paige and Marissa enter into a pack (after a few glasses of wine of course!). Paige is little more into it than the other two but they all go along with it in the end. They made this pact in front of the Goddess of the Beach. The next man each girl goes out with will be their last first date. They will MARRY that man (hope he's a good catch)!
Hmmmm....not sure if I would enter into such pact but I am all about hearing their fun tale!
And hey, Cassie meets Parker and who wouldn't say yes to marrying a gorgeous Dr. Think about that for a minute? But are things really as perfect as they seem or should be?
In what should be the happiest time in Cassie's life, she needs to deal with an annoying co-worker (in walk's another gorgeous professional guy) Will Jordan. He gets under Cassie's skin more than any man she has ever met!
But this is where my review ends, I can't give away all the fun juicy gossip that takes place with these girls! There is a little romance, a little love, a little sadness and a whole lot of fun! I can't wait for the next book!

This is one of my favourite books for 2017! It is super fun and easy to read, the characters are great (I want to be friends with all of them!) and the descriptions and plotting were perfect. Kate O'Keeffe is certainly a talented author. I would even go so far as to call her the Sophie Kinsella of New Zealand. :)

This is a Hollywood-worthy romantic comedy, complete with the required miscommunications and mad-cap situations representative of the genre. I loooved Cassie’s co-worker Will (it even inspired me to go and check out Poldark afterwards, which I had been meaning to do for ages). I also really liked that Bailey, the local café owner, had a role that went pleasantly beyond what you’d expect of a secondary character.

The story progression was great, and I read it all in three sittings, because I had to see if it was going to end how I wanted.

I highly recommend this book. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series!

P.S. I wish the Cozy Cottage Café was real, because I want to eat all their cakes!

Thank you Netgalley/provider for letting me read this book.

Needed something fluffy and not mentally taxing; this fit the bill.

Okay, there were cute moments. There SEEMED to be some personality to Cassie and her girlfriends, but they weren't drawn very deeply. I liked Will, was meant NOT to like poor Parker, obviously. This formulaic story has been done and overdone by so many, that I really hoped/wished something unexpected would happen.

I'm so glad I discovered this author as I adored this charming and funny book! It was well-written, full of wit, and had several swoon-worthy moments. I don't read as much "single-girl" chick lit as I used to, but I loved this author's voice and will definitely be reading the rest of this series.

The Blurb :

My Thoughts :
Firstly, I just adore the cover of this book. Its bright, fun and inviting.
I was instantly hooked from the opening chapter, it felt like the friends, Cassie, Marissa and Paige were casting a spell around a witches couldron. A perfect setting on the beach around a burning fire and a storm.
Cassie Dunhill is running out of time to find her perfect man, and has made a pact with her friends that the next man she dates, she will go on to marry. As we follow Cassie's quest without giving too much away will she find love or will she just make a mess of things.
Kate O'Keeffe has made a great story from her idea and its filled with a lot of funny moments, lots to relate to and great friendships. Cant wait for book 2

Cute romantic comedy and a quick read. Enjoyed reading about the friendship between Cassie, Paige, Marissa and Bailey. Bit annoyed that the author mentions The Twilight Zone and Forrest Whittaker instead of Rod Serling, made me feel old! Well that plus lead characters who prefer Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga haha.

Even at my old lady age I found this a fun and enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more in the series.

One Last First Date is a fun, feel good romance. It is rare that I like the hero better than the heroine but it happened in this book. It took me a bit to warm up to Cassie but I was enjoying the interaction between her and Will from the start. If you want a story that will leave you with a smile on your face read One Last First Date.

SENSUALITY RATING: NO Profanity; One non-descriptive sexual encounter

GENRE: Adult Fiction; YA; Modern day fiction

CENTRAL FEMALE CHARACTER: Paige – confident, controlling, successful, maybe a bit too unrealistic

CENTRAL MALE CHARACTER: - Will- a teaser, puts his nose in uninvited, great manager.
Parker – a doctor, loves golf and the finer things in life.

SYNOPSIS: It all starts with a pact between Paige and her best friends, Cassie and Marissa. Paige is determined to marry the next person that she dates. She has a timetable when she meets Parker and is waiting for the words “ILU” to cinch the deal. Paige’s co-worker, Will, is the most annoying person she has ever met. He wants the same management position that she wants. Game on!

WHAT I LIKED: Learning to play golf and look who is her teacher.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: Paige’s character is a bit annoying with her stuck-up ways.

OVERALL RATING: (4) stars because a break from romance. Very well written but Paige’s character can really be too annoying.

Chick lit romance

This novel is yet another unfortunate example of a publisher's choosing to promote a chick lit novel as a romantic comedy.

Unlike an actual romance novel, the entire story in this book is told from the single point of view of the narcissistic heroine, Cassie. She also has two romantic choices in an unfortunate romantic triangle in which neither man is much more emotionally mature than Cassie. We also do not find out until 90% of the book which man she will choose, and since there is no physical or emotional chemistry between Cassie and either of the two men, it's hard to root for either potential romance.

Readers who enjoy chick lit, where narcissistic heroines are quite typical and a romance plot is secondary, might enjoy this book. Romance fans will probably be as disappointed as I was if they fall for the false advertising and assume that this book is a romance novel.

While reading this book, I could totally see a group of my girlfriends and I doing a similar pact. I dislike dating so I could be game to the pact. I could relate to Cassie in multiple aspects - wanting to grow professionally at work, not break a pact with friends, and not being able to cook (well-LOL). Once I began reading this book, I didn't want to stop - I needed to know what Cassie was going to do in her personal life and professional life, especially when both crossed paths! Can't read to read the next book in the series!

oh my god... this book is so bad. the only people i would recommend this to are middleschoolers that like to fantasize about being grown up with a job; because that’s what the characters feel like. they’re supposed to be in their late twenties but act like they’re 13. there’s no world building, you don’t care for the bland characters(i seriously think there’s not a one character in this book that i like) and you can tell how this story is going to end in the first 30 pages.
i really don’t understand how this book has 3,8 stars, it’s the worst thing i have read in a long time.

Cassie is a dimwit. Every thought about her first last date candidate is about him liking her, not whether she likes him. She and her friend page are more caricature than actual people.

When three almost-thirty-year-olds decide they are done dating and just want to meet "the ONE," they gather on the beach during a summer thunderstorm and make a pact that whoever each dates next will be their one and only for all time.
Cassie Dunhill is the first of the trio to find a potential mate. She does her due diligence and asks more questions than she is comfortable with before she agrees to a date. With disastrous yet humorous results, Cassie makes a big first impression. She admits adjustments may have to be made but Cassie is determined not to let her friends down and to be true to this pact.

When she is not daydreaming about her day in a white dress, Cassie works as a senior sales representative with aspirations on becoming the department head. Her main block there is an ace salesman and ambitious "good ol' boy" with his eyes on the same prize. Even worse, one of her best friends has a crush on him. Cassie has a PLAN for her future. Will is not part of that plan.

This is RomCom at its finest. You'll love the characters who all have likable traits along with their annoying ones. Some of Cassie's mistakes we've all done ourselves. You will cringe at remembering how you can relate. I want best friends like this, who even though they fight, really do have each others' backs.

Kate O'Keeffe creates such charming, knowable characters, and Cassie, et al. fit right in with the ones I had previously met. She has a gift for writing cringe-worthy, comical moments, too (note to self: never play golf with Cassie). I appreciate that Cassie's career takes equal place in her life alongside her romantic pursuits. Until I get to meet up again with the crew in the next book, I'm going to have to search out a delicious piece of flourless chocolate raspberry cake to satisfy my cravings!

This is such a cute cover! Definitely grabbed my attention.
I absolutely love the friendship group in this book, what’s better than friends making a pact with each other? This is a fun read, containing love and heartbreak. I’ve finished this book in just a few hours. This is my first read by this author but it won’t be the last.

Cassie and her friends are fed up with the continual rounds of meaningless dates and decide that the next people they date are going to be their Mr Rights, marriage and the full works. Cassie is the first to find someone and Parker is a doctor and perfect for her in every possible way ...........so what can possibly go wrong...... try throwing Will into the mix!

A good light hearted fun read, predictable but worth reading I liked the characters, especially Will, and the easy style of writing

Quick read! Very cute and pretty funny at times. Definitely a HEA, predictable ending. This is a feel good read and was a good book to read in conjunction with a more heavy title. I really enjoyed the strong friendship element of this book and that The romance is not the only focal point.
