Stop what you’re doing right now and pick up this book!
Whether you are an entrepreneur, business manager, teacher, writer, student, professional athlete, or in-between opportunities, you’re not dreaming BIG enough and need some hard-hitting motivation. Rule #1, Don’t be #2 is Dan Milstein’s fourth book and boy, is it inspiring! Dan’s writing style is similar (I imagine) to talking with him in person. He shows us, through catchy, digestible phrases and his own experiences, how to live a successful life, both professionally and personally. Not since first reading Stephen Covey more than twenty-five years ago, have I been blown away by a business motivational book.
The best part, for me, was Dan speaking freely about potential, hard work, perseverance and success. Dan’s background as an Ukrainian immigrant with seventeen cents in his pocket touched me. He worked his way through the ranks to achieving mind-blowing success. The more I read through this book, the more I felt like it was written for me. As an entrepreneur trying to grow my business, Rule #1, Don’t Be #2 opened my eyes to the possibilities. I’ve just got to dream BIG and never get complacent.
I highly recommend this book to everyone, young and old. It’ll change your perspective and inspire you to do BIG things, more than you ever thought possible. Writers/Authors: pick up this book and discover how to increase your brand and business.

“Work so hard that one day your signature will be called an autograph.”
Thanks to Goodreads & Daniel Milstein for this giveaway.......... I didn't read the whole book, but it seemed to me to be the usual "power of positive thinking" stuff. Maybe others will find this more inspiring & useful than I did. What I did find amazing is that ALL 34 previous reviews were 5 stars. Every one! Everybody raved about this book. Is this even possible?
This is a book of Life PRECEPTS. Although targeted at business readers, RULE #1 is really applicable to all of life. The book is not a "how to" guide; rather, it is a series of life lessons learned the hard way by Mr. Milstein.
Even though a Kindle version is available, I recommend you stick with the hardcopy. (The audio version might also be helpful.) This is one of those books you will want to have around and browse through sometimes. I think the actual format and presentation helps tell the story, and drive the points home.
The author explains that he came to the U.S. with pennies in his pocket, then after years of hard work, rocketed to the top of his profession. Each of the 25 chapters covers a life lesson that the author illustrates. For example, Chapter 20 suggests, "There's No Room For Complainers." He notes that "Nobody likes a whiner to a complainer. They are the first cousins of the critic." And, "Feeling sorry for yourself isn't part of the game plan."
Many of the points emphasize hard work, focus, planning--and most of all, ACTION. You don't need to read the chapters in order, although I did. You can zip through this little book in about an hour, but I think most people will want to keep the book close at hand.
Most of the ideas are not outlandish or amazingly original. I've seen similar ideas in many inspirational and success books. Nevertheless, I found the stories and ideas credible and helpful.
Of all the points made, I like this one the best: "You should have goals so big that you are uncomfortable telling your friends about them."
‘You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.’
Daniel Milstein is the Founder and CEO of the Gold Star Family of Companies, operating in over 40 offices worldwide, specializing in financial services, sports management, publishing and film production. Under Dan’s visionary leadership, Gold Star has been named among Inc. magazine’s 500 Fastest Growing Companies in America. Having read all four of David’s books – STREET SMART SELLING, 17 CENTS AND A DREAM, THE ABCs OF SALES: LESSONS FROM A SUPER STAR, and now RULE #1: DON’T BE #2 - he has become not only a mentor and inspiration but also a focused friend in making life and work and everything we touch a success. More of his personal history informs us well: he previously has shared his beginnings in the USSR, his love for his dentist grandfather, the closeness of his family living in very meager conditions in Kiev, the Chernobyl disaster and evacuation from contaminated Kiev only to return later to a brutal expression of anti-Semitism and the eventual decision for his family to secretly flee to America. But landing in America, in Michigan, opened the door to a strange new land of foreign language that challenged the 16-year old immigrant Daniel. Living in cramped quarters with not enough money to buy food save for food stamps, Daniel learned to resist bullies, overcome hunger and set his sights for learning English, attending school, becoming a mechanic, and providing for his beloved family. Through all these hard times he had to remind himself: `I had all the tools, all the things I needed to be somebody. I could fall back on excuses and say that it was too hard, that I wasn't good enough or smart enough. I could have said that everyone picked on me, or that no one thought I could do it. I could have thrown in the towel and apologized to my grandfather for failing. But America was not a place for excuses. It was not going to be a place for failure. It was going to be a place for opportunities.'
And that is precisely the reason why he draws us into this book RULE#1: DON’T BE #2. He warmly challenges us to follow our dreams – ‘That’s why I want to share what I’ve learned with you. I have a mentor’s heart, but I will never buy in to the excuses you may be using for giving up. I want to help you identify and address whatever is blocking your own success. Because I know you can ignite your dream and achieve your goals. Your challenges may be lesser or greater than those I’ve faced, but one thing is certain: you can learn from everything I have experienced and from everyone who has inspired me. Within these pages are the life- changing lessons and stories of people who have inspired me over the years: friends, mentors, and others I hold in high regard. They’ve overcome great odds and have become wildly successful.’ His book is filled with memorable quotations and inspiring one-liners that make this a book to keep close by for infusing the concept of reahing our dreams as well as practical instruction in the manner of a wise coach. Words such as – ‘Stop wasting time. Put down the remote and get off the couch. Stay productive.’ and ‘You’ve got to stay engaged and active; otherwise you can easily lose momentum in your daily routine.’ The book is full of such supportive encouragement. It is also an invitation from a very generous author to enjoy the adventure of following your passion.
And that sums up the direction of this inspirational book. Especially during this time of financial strain and pessimism this beautifully written memoir/coaching guide serves as food for the soul. Reading this book not only is an engrossing experience - it is an uplifting one. As Milstein would encourage us, believe, and struggle even, because anything is possible if we truly remember the American Dream.
I received Rule #1 Don't Be #2 as a Goodreads giveaway. It is a wonderfully written motivational book. It will inspire you to make advances in your personal and professional life.
To fully grasp the massive amount of wisdom, advice, and strategies for success in Daniel Milstein's impressive and attractive new book, "Rule #1 - Don't Be #2" try to imagine rows and rows of stacked books by the most successful people of the past decade, century and millennia. Now imagine trying to read through all of these books. It would probably take a lifetime. And then it would be too late to put any of your newly learned strategies to work.
Instead, Daniel Milstein has written a much easier guide to becoming a success. Milstein has written several earlier books in which he tells the story of how he was a teenager who had just emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1991 with 13 cents in his pocket and some clothes from the Salvation Army on his back. Through hard work and sheer diligence, Milstein worked his way up the ladder from a minimum wage job at McDonald's to his current position as Chairman of Gold Star Enterprises - which is involved in a number of endeavors including representing professional hockey players to financing major motion pictures and more.
Milstein says he wrote this book out of a desire to help you become a success too. "Knowing what I know," writes Milstein, "it's very frustrating -- often heartbreaking to watch people give up." Milstein writes that he wants to identify and address whatever is "blocking your own path to success. Because I know I can ignite your dream and achieve your goals". Milstein says he wanted to write a book of success stories from people who "have inspired me over the years, friends, mentors and people I hold in high regard." And by following their examples and learning from their mistakes, the author says you too can "get off the couch" and become your own dream too.
The book is packed to the brim with entertaining and inspiring stories of hard working, focused individuals, like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (who partnered with a college friend to start the behemoth-like social media vehicle Facebook, worth $51.5 million dollars), Dallas Cowboy coach Jimmy Johnson (who taught his players to ignore the noise of critics and went on to win two Super Bowls), Brain Surgeon and recent Presidential candidate Ben Carson (who like Abraham Lincoln read books to learn all they needed to know), Russian skier Anton Gafarov (who refused to quit in the Olympics even after one of his skis broke), and even Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (who went from being a top body builder to one of the hottest actors in the world to the Governor's office.
In each of these stories the lessons have a familiar ring. Do more than just what is expected....always raise the bar as high as possible...work harder and later than your competitor. At its very core, Milstein's book stresses action and proper planning as two of the most important attributes. Again and again, Milstein gives examples of how he went the extra distance to get a new account, get a promotion, start a new venture. He did what others were not willing to do and it paid off many times over.
In addition to these great stories, only touched upon, the book is filled with bright, red, full-page affirmations and reminders, like "Choice, Not Circumstance, Determines Your Success," "Dream it. Plan it. Do it." "Surround Yourself With People Who Dream Bigger Than You," "The Harder You Work, The Luckier You Get" and "Dreams Don't Work Unless You Do" and so many more.
"Rule #1 -Don't Be #2" is a fast-paced, hard-driving book that could be read in just a few sittings, but it's a book that if you take these lessons to heart can be life altering. Daniel Milstein has never been content for second best and he doesn't want you to be either. But in the end he stresses that it is the dreamers and doers who make the world spin round every day. We fill our heads each day with self-chatter which can often be more destructive than anything else. If you follow the advice and replace that chatter tight the guides given in this book, you will succeed.
This book is a true gem, it is empowering, inspirational, ruthlessly honest, but most importantly it is probably the most outstandingly motivational book you will ever read, if you REALLY want your dream to come true.
Why? Because it’s written by a man who knows what he’s talking about. You see, in 1991, Daniel Milstein and his parents arrived in America, they were fleeing the religious and political persecution which raged in their native Soviet Union. Daniel Milstein at 16, had only 17 cents in his pocket, however even at that young age, he was richer than most, why, simply because he had a win/win mind-set, a positive outlook, guts and determination. With these assets, from that moment, although he himself didn’t realise it, he was already on his way to achieving the American Dream.
What I liked about this book is that it is so full of inspiring stories. However, this doesn’t mean his message is sugar coated, certainly not! This is a man who tells it as it is, and freely admits that his philosophy runs along the lines of a swift kick in the pants.
Throughout he insists that success lies in attitude, and action, dreaming is no good, it is futile to wait for luck to come your way, the right time, approval from others. You MUST work hard, grab those chances, and not fear failure. Should things not go well, then use the experience as a learning curve, and take a lesson from Arianna Huffington’s mother, who told her daughter (Founder of The Huffington Post) ‘Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s a steppingstone to success.’
Complacency is another very important factor Daniel Milstein covers. It is essential that you remember you can never rest on your laurels. “Success is never owned. It is rented and the rent is due every day!” is his motto. When you succeed be pleased, but don’t become content with your lot, your competitor is waiting to step in your shoes as soon as you lapse, so make sure you don’t!
Persistency is vital. Whatever your dream, go with it, and don’t give up. Should you fail the first, second, third… time then continue to persevere. He provides examples of many well-known names from the MacDonald brothers, Henry Ford, to the inspirational Jim Eisenreich, people who didn’t give up, or listen to those negative influences. Through the motivational quotes and messages strewn copiously throughout the book, the reasons why those who succeed do so, are laid out in plain sight for you to see. Be brave, think outside the box, follow that dream, and then dream bigger, and better. Remember success might not happen overnight, but if you never go for it, you can never win. So stick with it, work hard and learn from those around you and, you will make it.
Eighty-six percent of millionaires are self-made, and two thirds of the world’s billionaires made their fortune from scratch – so what’s stopping you?
Pick up a copy of this book and follow the authors guide to success, learn from him, and others then show the world just what you can achieve!
Are you aware, as Daniel Milstein points out in his most recent time, Rule #1 DON'T BE #2 that ninety-seven percent of people who have a dream will never realize them while only three percent of those who dreamed about pursing their passion will be successful? How do some people gravitate toward success while others seem to be constantly spinning their wheels and even in some instances barely making ends meet.
Okay, as I began reading this book, I had to ask myself if this is another one that regurgitates well-known principles as to how to succeed in life? Moreover, will I be wasting my time or will it give me some return on my investment in time and money as a result of its ideas and suggestions.
Indeed, Rule #1 DON'T BE #2 surprised me even though Milstein's advice is quite simplistic, it nonetheless contains a wealth of wisdom exposed in a way that cuts the fat from the bone. As an example I found chapter four particularly useful wherein Milstein emphasizes that you must know your priorities, which are more than a daily or weekly “to do” list; rather, they refer to those things that are most important to us professionally and personally. As he states: “They consist of a guide to create a set of goals that will help us develop a framework to accomplish them. And as we remain focused on our priorities, they also help us continue to make necessary adjustments in order to reach our goals.”
What really caught my eye was the manner in which Milstein's presents his easy to understand step-by-step process by way of twenty-five succinct principles. Skillfully woven into each of the inspiring chapters are powerful short self-evident statements or dictums such as: “You'll have a much greater chance for long-term success by constantly focusing directly on which you want in life,” or “Be bold: Make the First Move: Since most people operate inside the box, the competition outside the box is very low” or “Good luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Bad luck is what happens when lack of preparation meets a challenge.” With these in mind as well as a multitude of takeaways, Milstein teaches us with his keen mindset and road map the know-how for thinking differently to achieve greater results. No doubt, the best way to learn something insightful is usually through a story and Milstein provides his readers with a variety of anecdotal stories of well-known personalities to reinforce his principles.
In the end, I would have to conclude that the book did not disappoint teaching us not only “how to” but from his own personal experiences as well as others, why “it works.” As Milstein points out, it is more than just talent or luck but rather grit, determination, passion to be number one rather than number two, persistence and mindset, formulating ambitious goals, learn from failure, acting decisively, looking at your life through a new lens, rejecting naysayers, doing things faster and better, that makes the difference in whether or not you succeed.

Milstein Teaches That Success Not Accidental But is Earned Each Day
You never retire from striving for success because it is an activity that requires daily commitment, planning, and deliberate action. Take it from the mentor of successful living, Daniel Milstein who just released his newest book packed with secrets to success – “Rule #1, Don’t Be #2: you get what you work for – not what you wish for.”
This wonderful book is filled with nuggets of inspiration such as:
• Some people dream of success, while others wake up and work hard for it.
• Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t so you can live the rest of your life like most people can’t.
• Being on the edge is not as safe but the view is better.
• Winners are not the people who never fail; they are the people who never quit.
• While you debated whether the glass is empty or full, I sold it.
Milstein’s latest book is filled with other pieces of wisdom as well as steps to take and steps to avoid to become the successful person you want to be in life. The text is so well-written, and the advice so gripping, that the reader can finish the book in one setting and then begin applying the life-changing principles the next day.
The author has the credentials to write about success because he is founder and CEO of the Gold Star Family of Companies, specializing in financial services, sports management, publishing and film production.
A national leader in mortgage finance year after year, Milstein’s love for mentoring inspiring him to begin writing in 2010 and that has resulted him becoming the best-selling author of “The ABC of Sales,” “17 Cents and a Dream,” and “Street Smart Selling.”
“Rule #1, Don’t Be #2” is the crown on his writing career as Milstein shares the secrets of how he rose from an immigrant from Russia to America at age 17, from a laborer at McDonald’s, to a leading mortgage financier, author and sports agent. This is a book you cannot afford not to read.
The book is a hard one to rate. It is a cheerleading book on positive thinking in business. Of the 231 pages over 100 are filled with maxims such as "The only time you run out of chances is when you don't take them" and "A goal without a plan is just a wish." And of the remaining 130 or less pages, many have a pericope or two in larger font. So if everything were in the same size font the book would be about 100 pages long. Nothing wrong with that, but given the content it fits more in the cheerleading leaders category than as a business book. It reads like the compilation of 25 articles in a company newsletter on having the right perspective on your job.
That being said, the content is good, the layout interesting, the author's story compelling, and especially for one suffering from uncertainty or self-doubt it can be very helpful. It would make for a nice gift for a company or department. (If I had either I'd buy multiple copies for a holiday gift.)
It is an easy read, given the amount of space used for apothegms and inclusion of stories from others like Wayne Gretsky, Ray Kroc, or Ben Carson's mother Sonya (every chapter has at least one, and some chapters are only a couple pages long). But the points are good and the book as a whole is even more paradigm-shifting than any one chapter.
I liked it and recommend it, as long as you're looking for attitudinal information rather than management fodder.
Dan Milstein, best-selling author, motivational speaker and business executive has laid out his 25 rules for how he got where he is in his personal life and career. Rule #1 Don’t Be #2 - You Get What You Work For, Not What You Wish For, helps you reach your highest potential.
This book is not one for “cute” phrases that can be hung on your wall, but one that is filled with honest insight and motivational excerpts from Milstein’s life. Milstein’s book states his straightforward philosophy to his readers to work hard and not to be scared of failure.
“Success. Everybody has an idea of what it means. Most people want it. But it’s elusive. Many of the most intelligent and gifted people you know never achieve what we would consider success. Something is missing. Somethings in their way,” Dan Milstein.
To sum up this must read title: “Opportunities are usually disguised as impossible situations. Most people don’t see an opportunity until it doesn’t exist anymore. Don’t be most people!”

I really enjoyed reading this book which my daughter received from a Goodreads giveaway. It had so much good advice for everyday struggles as well as occupational ones. Below are some of the best motivational sayings that I read in this book. Success means working hard every day and making the necessary sacrifices to accomplish often-challenging goals. It is not about being the best. It's about being better than you were yesterday. Dreams don't work unless you do. One year from now, you'll wish you had started today. You lose so many chances by waiting for the "right time." Never let someone who has done nothing tell you how to do anything. Winners are not the people who never fail; they are the people who never quit. and my most favorite - It's never too late to become what you might have been. As you can see by these excerpts, this is a very inspiring and motivational book. I highly recommend it.
Go and grab this book and start reading. This book is for everyone.
The book is filled with catchy lines, inspiring stories and habits to adopt in our life. I have read many motivational books and It would surely be on the top of that. Most of the ideas have been already there or said in many of the motivational books. But I find stories to back up certain points more useful.
My favorite quote from the book is : "It is not about being best. It is about being better than yesterday."
I will recommend this book to everyone. It changes the way you think. It gives motivation and self-confidence to achieve your goals.
Motivational and positive thinking bla bla - theory and no practice. I was expecting an insider story on actual sports management, sports and winning psychology or a story around it. It looked like a ‘motivation for beginners’ book to me. I have enjoyed stories about hockey players’ success, it was an interesting reading. However, the other stories on Michael Jordan, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and others - are well known and have already been used as examples in many motivational books and quotes on social media.
The book is excellent for amateur bookworms like me. It's well structured, broken down to many chapters and sections for easy reading and understanding. The author repeatedly makes aware of the readers to make decisions and avoid procrastination. The author has used a variety of examples for the readers to highlight and understand the concepts.
Overall the book was a great read and would love to explore the other titles of Daniel Mlistein.
I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway. The only thing that saved this book from a 2 star rating was the few pages on being a mystery shopper to scope out your competition. Otherwise the book was quite literally a book of common quotes about being successful such as "Start chasing being the best".
I received a this book from a Goodreads giveaway. This is a small book and a quick read. While the book may be inspirational for some, I found the information to be pretty generic as far as motivational advice.
I supposedly won this book in a goodreads giveaway, but never received it even after several attempts to reach the author. If he can't be bothered to respond to his readers, his advice can't be that good. So I recommend staying away from this book.
Daniel Milstein's “Rule #1 Don't Be #2: You Get What You Work For, Not What You Wish For” is a hard-hitting kick in the pants to get you up and make things happen. It's an easy, fun, book to read, and it contains empowering inspiration throughout.
Milstein is brutally honest when it comes to his thoughts on success. You need to work, and you need to work hard. It won't always be comfortable, you will fail at times, and it will always be challenging. But you must remain positive, committed, and never quit.
Are the ideas in this book groundbreaking and new? No. Much of it has been said before in various ways. Hard work, positive thinking, and laser focus have been cornerstones of success books for years. Why? They are the keys to success!
If you haven't read books that discuss these topics, read this one. It does a good job of laying out the simple (doesn't mean easy) steps to success in a fun and easy to digest manner. If you have read books like this, read this one too. Why? Because it will reinforce the principles and give you a kick in the butt to ensure you are practicing them. It's like Zig Ziglar used to say, “motivation is like bathing, they both wear off, that is why he recommended both daily.” This is a good shot of motivating advice to get you moving toward your goals and dreams.
The majority of this book consists of a collection of generic, large print inspirational slogans splashed across every other page. The remaining text divulges that the key to success is to think positive, work hard, have a plan, and never give up. What a revelation! Not once had this ground-breaking strategy occurred to me before now! Keep in mind that the entire tome can be read cover-to-cover in 45 minutes or less (leaning heavily toward less). Absolutely zero in-depth analysis. Perhaps most irritating is the author's heavy use of blanket statements as well as his propensity to expound upon his own greatness. It really boggles my mind as to why this received so many five star ratings.
The author succeeds in offering inspirational statements, vision and passion. The book is direct and conveys high energy and commitment. Not necessarily new thoughts but good catch phrases to inspire any reader.
each chapter is a new "life lesson". Of the 231 pages over 100 are filled with maxims Like "A goal without a plan is just a wish." it was a great read for me I loved it.
