Joanie Fox can't wait to settle down and marry the man of her dreams. However, when her engagement starts to look more stalemate than soulmate, her best friend stages an intervention sure to make even the most hardened, serial daters wince: 10 Dates in 10 Days.
Statistically, if you kiss a lot of frogs there's bound to be at least one that's not a complete toad, isn't there? With nothing to lose, Joanie embarks on a crazy rollercoaster of blind dates. After all, what can possibly go wrong in the search for Mr. Right?
10 Dates is a standalone, sexy, laugh out loud romantic comedy with a happy ending. It is not for the feint hearted and is best suited for readers over the age of eighteen due to sexual themes and mature content.
It’s Big-Tits-Twenty. I recognise her sickly, purring voice, even though I can’t quite see her yet. She sounds like a room full of tortured cats.
Peter likes Sci-Fi and Potter and arranges his hair in a bouffant, Falcon Twist on the top of his head. Sadly, for him it’s thinning around the top and looks more frightened ferret than falcon funk.
I’m not usually so uncouth, but instead I ungracefully burp in response. The smell of lemon and garlic and onion rings hangs in the air between us like an unwelcome neighbour.
‘Melinda? I’m too pretty to go to jail,’ I say between gasps, as though vanity is a valid reason not to go to jail.
Please God, don’t let Six have seen my Power Pants. The ones that neither sit inside nor outside of my derrière, meaning I have to discretely pick them out at regular intervals. The ones that I wear because they also keep any lumps and bumps to a minimum.
If this was a police line-up of butts, then mine could be mistaken for a Kardashian’s, either that or two hard purple footballs.
You should totally go for him, Melinda. I think once he finally hits puberty, you’ll have a real catch on your hands.
My Review:
I delighted in this cleverly written and engaging tale from start to finish and frequently smirked, giggle-snorted, and laughed so forcefully I had to put my kindle down to catch my breath and clear my eyes. I adored the cleverly amusing storyline, witty quips, humorous inner musings, and quirky characters. I adored the secondary characters as much as I did the primary players. Crisp writing, vivid visuals, and sparkling levity could be found on each and every page. Joanie was an endearing Calamity Jane type character who was newly single and humoring her friend by allowing herself to be set-up on ten blind dates as a distracting project. The dates were each either a dismal failure and/or hazardous to Joanie’s health, although extremely entertaining fodder. Emily James has mad skills and a new fangirl.
Stars: 5-6-7-8-9-10 whatever I can give this novella to!!! <3 <3
Oh sweet mother of holy moly and all the curses and swoons in the world. I loved the book with each chapter and the words and phrases!! This book meant something close to me because I was just not a reader for Emily James and the book to her. I saw and read and felt this book grow in front of me which made me feel connected to it somehow deeper than just reading the lines and imagining the scenes in my head. It was way more and It was dearly heartfelt experience to be included in the journey of this beautiful and hilarious book and story of Four and Six.
About the book and the story:
I am at lost of words regarding what Four and Six are.
Four, Joanie, is a remarkable character accomplished by the author, Emily James. Joanie, is a love struck girl in her early 30. She is expecting marriage and everything else that entails from her long time boyfriend, Chris. But But But, reality is something else and as her world plummets forward with a rejection instead of a proposal, funny shit wheels down the line in her life. She has been assigned to 10 glorifying and mysterious and biblical dates when she encounters a sexy, smouldering, scintillating man residing next door to hers. Six!
Six, whose name itself is a mystery till the end of the novel, ( which I wouldn't be telling either because that is for the reader to find out for its own fun), is a rich, handsome, tall guy with dark eyes. He tends to encounter with number Four, at the most awkward settings in their lives and the scenarios keep getting better than the previous.
The story overall is a hunt of a true love when life gives you lemon, number four, Joanie, literally and figuratively makes a lemonade out of it. I was burst into hissy fits of laughter which I don't fall into easily reading books or novels or anything on the net.
Comedy is a sector which isn't easy to compel people. And when it comes to writing comedy, it is way more difficult. Salute to the author, Emily James, who did this tremendous job of writing such beautiful lines and scenes that I assure every reader out there, won't be bored out of it.
The dialogue deliveries are fantastic and there are some scenes, especially the ending which made my heart pound and shout a big AWWWW! and that was a total dramatic and filmy ending which was actually colourful in its own. Also, I could see the British background and words and gestures and similarities in the book which is not often seen in the books with a blase style of writing.
I humbly request everyone out there who loves a quick journey of happy ending with a hot read mixed with comedy and stomach clenching laughter, to definitely read this story.
Because, learn Ten Dates to blow your stomach, not minds, away with funny bones and lots of tickles!!! <3 <3
Plot overview: Desperate-to-be-married Joanie gets dumped by her boyfriend (big shock) and embarks on a set on blind dates.
I had to DNF at 9%, y’all. 9%. How sad is that? This book had over 200 gushy, glowy reviews on Amazon, and I had to DNF at 9%. I’m starting to feel like someone is playing a practical joke on me or something.
I will say that I didn’t DNF the book because it was poorly written. It wasn’t. And frankly, I found Joanie’s inner thoughts to be really funny in most cases. What I couldn’t get behind was finding YET ANOTHER romance novel heroine who is so terribly desperate to get married that she’s willing to accept crappy treatment because she thinks it’ll get her a ring faster. Joanie is SURE her boyfriend is going to propose, even though he’s given her exactly ZERO indications that he even cares about her at all. He’s so clearly using her to finance his business venture that it makes me want to smack Joanie across the face for thinking THIS guy is even remotely husband material.
Here’s what I learned about Joanie’s boyfriend (the guy she’s willing--desperate--to marry) in the first 9% of the book:
1. He’s been dating her for 3 years and has never made their relationship--or commitment--a priority
2. He cheated on her early in their relationship. She made excuses for him.
3. He asked her to pay for and plan a party for him when he fully intended to dump her at that party. She expected a ring. She made excuses for him again.
4. He calls her “Joan”, even though he knows she hates the name. She allows him to keep doing it, though.
5. He doesn’t say “I love you” to her. Like, ever.
6. He asked for an expensive computer for Christmas (which she bought him) and he got her a cheap copy of the watch she wanted.
Sounds like a great guy, huh? I really hate him, but honestly, I kind of hate Joanie more for tolerating that behavior and for being willing to overlook all of it just so that she can be married. She’s a total doormat and I hate her so much that I can’t keep reading, even though I’m sure she learns to not be doormat later in the book. (One can only hope, right?)
Women being portrayed as desperate ring seekers is only perpetuating the romance novel stigma and I’m totally over it.
So I’m out. I’m out at 9%. I’m out with extreme prejudice.

So... this was one of those over the top, trying very hard to be funny kind of story where in the mission of making you laugh out loud, it makes you feel embarrass out loud instead. The h was such a push over and weird creepy peeping tom that should be avoided on all the cost. Again we have got a lead female "who doesn't know she is so beautiful and worth billions and guys are just waiting for her to notice them." The H...well i don't know how to...feel about him as every other H is just like him. So overall a no no for me. And nobody can be that stupid and desperate..well as far as i have seen people in my life, don't know if the author might have encountered this...... embarrassing kind of ...quality females. Plain stupid.
OMG...with friends like these who needs enemies. I mean they mean well, especially Melinda as she not only hits Joanie with her plan for 10 dates in 10 days, but Mikey as well as he has to take one on one cooking classes. And the dates; one can only wonder how Joanie actually survives them.
I absolutely loved this book. The storyline is absolutely fabulous and actually quite possibly real in someone's everyday life; well most of it. The story flowed well and keeps you thoroughly entertained from the very beginning until the huge smile inducing ending. AAWWWWWW
The characters are very well written and quite well developed and totally loveable. Joanie (or 4) is heartbroken but she is no whimp. She is quite strong minded, fisty and quick witted. She has one little problem however, and that is her drop dead gorgeous, hot as all get out, and apparent play-thing for "twenty", neighbor - - "6". The banter between these two is nothing more than the funniest foreplay than you can ask for. She can't stand him...but he's so gorgeous and hot. He is attracted to her, but she doesn't give in to him, especially when she see's "twenty" helping him into his apartment and hearing them through the walls...well her mostly. So between 4 and her dates and banter with 6, and 6 with his hotness and his tendency to stick his nose in her dates, makes this one sweetly romantic and hysterical read!
10 Dates by Emily James a fab four star-read. 10 Dates: A fun and sexy romantic comedy by Emily James that can be read as a stand-alone. This is my first story by this author, and it won’t be the last, she writes a funny and romantic, laugh out loud moments. The characters in this book are people you want to know more about, you can’t help but care about them and feel for them as their story progresses. Joanie Fox had a plan, she has been waiting for her boyfriend Chris to propose when the time is right, and just when she thinks she has it, it doesn’t happen. Chris announces something else instead. Her best friends help her out and they save in the form of an intervention, 10 dates in 10 days. You have to kiss some frogs to find your prince, right, or your Mr Right? The story progresses and you get some very funny circumstances, the background characters in this story are great, they really make the story. There are some you will love, like Six (Whose name will be revealed as you read) and some that you won’t like so much, and may even go so far to hate like Chris (The non-Fiancé) This is a crazy rollercoaster of emotion, and it will have you laughing out loud at the craziest situations, and then wanting to read more when you finish your page. I can’t wait for the next book where we get to hear more from Melinda (one of the great background characters, who happens to be one of the best friends).
OMG! This book was so much fun!! I've never laughed so much with a story before. This one is amazing!!!
We start this book at a New Year's party, where Joanie's boyfriend is celebrating his dating app, Sex Talk Dating, and after three years together, Joanie believes he will propose - as he said he would at the beginning of their relationship - but she has another thing coming and the night ends completely different than what she imagined. The next morning, the first day of the year already starts terrible as a stranger - her neighbor from door six - knocks on her door to give back the shoe that she lost while trying to get home after the disastrous party. She quickly meets the too handsome guy next door but it's not hearts and rainbows. They start bickering at each other and that's where their weird interactions begin.
Six - the neighbor - is a handsome mysterious guy, and we don't get to discover his name until the end of the book - which added a little excitement to the whole story - and he is as cocky as they come. He keeps showing up at places and in the hallway, always teasing Joanie.
Their encounters were something else. I laughed out loud every freaking time. They were funny and the fireworks were off the charts between them.
"The wind blasts his hair in all directions but instead of looking a mess, he has the look of a model in a commercial. I cross my arms in a huff. Trust Sex to make storms look sexy."
These little sentences at the end were absolutely hilarious. There were so many and it was each time more amazing than the last.
Joanie's best friend, Melinda, tells her that she needs to have ten dates in ten days. So, the whole point is to Joanie get over her loneliness and find a boyfriend and during these 10 days, she will have all kinds of dates with some of Melissa's single friends. Each one of them is weirder and more terrible than the other. I couldn't keep a straight face when she went on a date with the police officer while she was stone without knowing it, because she ate some of her friends, Mikey, cookies without knowing they were special. It was absolutely hilarious.
"Joanie, did you take the cookies from Mikey's bag?" Melinda asks. I nod. Yes, I did. My thoughts don't quite catch up to her point. "Don't panic but Mikey made some special pot cookies, and now, well now you're stone off your nut having dinner with a police officer. But it's okay. Help is on the way." (...) "Melinda, I'm stoned." "Yep." "I'm having dinner with a police officer." "Uh-huh." "Fu**! Melinda, I ordered a starter, two sides and a main course!" "Standart issue stoner dinner, Hun." "I ate all of Damien's onion rings!" Melinda starts to laugh and it's catching. I slide off the toilet and onto the floor clutching my sides. My brain has eloped with my sanity, nothing makes sense but everything is hilarious.
Moving on to another date, she went paintballing with an ex-marine - that for the life of her can't remember his name - and ends up being massacred and shoot several times. But of course that's not all. While she was being paint-shot, she falls on her rear side and hurts her buttocks, ending up at the hospital with an extremely painful and embarrassing injury. "Trust Four to go on a date and come home with an embarrassing a** injury."
And so on, and so on... Joanie has the worst dates in the history of dates but she keeps going until the tenth date will be the one she was waiting for.
This was an amazing book! I read it in one sitting and couldn't stop reading it and laughing with Joanie's lack of luck. I loved every part of it and can't wait to read Melinda's story! I totally recommend this one! <3
This was such a great rom-com! Such a fun read with lots of laughs. This book also taught me to fear the idea of blind dates. Haha. Joanie had the worst luck when it came to her dates. It was comical how bad they were and the situations she ended up in. Loved this book!
Absolutely Loved this book. It’s a Sexy, Flirty and Fun Read. Joanie, or Four as she is know to her sexy neighbor who lives in #Six, is down on her luck. After 3 years of dating and thinking she was heading to the altar, her boyfriend leaves her causing her bestie to set her up on 10 dates in days. From there all I can say is let the laughter begin.
Poor Joanie has the worst luck at absolutely the wrong times but she is a strong woman with a sharp tongue (when needed) and for the most part a great outlook on life. Joanie has the craziest family and the zaniest friends (including Six). The author has truly written great characters that you can’t help but Love and feel like you’ve known them all your life.
If you enjoy RomComs that will keep you smiling, grinning and glued to the pages, 10 Dates is the book for you. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s very well written and you absolutely will not regret one-clicking this one!
Joanie thinks her boyfriend is about to propose to her at the party she has planned but when he announced a business trip to New York instead she is finally fed up and so are her friends. One of which decides to stage an intervention: 10 dates in 10 days to find Mr.Right; nothing could go wrong....right? Well throw in intervening friends, an irritating ex, and a sexy, funny, and frustrating neighbour, nicknamed Six, and you have one hell of a entertaining 10 days.
“No Four, this is my place. I own it. I am the boss. You are officially worshiping at my alter, how does it feel?” he asks. I gulp and follow his lead. “It makes sense, great big ostentatious building, for great big-headed bastard. Did they raise the ceilings especially?”
This was a lighthearted, funny, and sexy romance read that takes me back to the down to earth, classic romance where you have loveable characters and an easy but entertaining plot line that you can just get lost in easily.
Joanie was such a likeable character. I really related with her dating woes and it made connecting with her so easy. She was so funny and her frustrations with the dates were very entertaining to read about. Despite wanting to find Mr.Right she also had a very independent and take no s**t from anyone attitude as well, which I really admired about her.
"I’m consumed by Six’s touch as he supports me by holding my ass. The pressure of his lips on mine sends lightning bolts of pleasure down my whole body. When Six breaks our kiss to nibble and taste the delicate skin of my neck, a throaty groan escapes my mouth."
Six (we do find out his real name but I don't want to spoil anything!) was absolutely hilarious! He was cocky, confident, sexy and funny and I loved him. I could picture him perfectly in my head smirking away and his confidence just reached out of the pages. He always seemed to bump into Joanie in the most awkward and embarrassing moments (mainly for her) and every time it made me laugh and swoon at the same time because of his quick one liners and sexy smile.
"I do what any normal, lucid, self-conscious woman would do under the circumstances. As if it is suddenly on fire, I drop the penis and run like hell to the safety of my apartment."
Really this is just a story of trying to find your Mr.Right in a world full of Mr.Wrongs - but it was filled with so much laughter and sexiness that it was really entertaining to read about. It had a certain flare to it which I think was the great characters, the hilarious banter and the flow of the writing. It was just overall a great romance read that has me feeling all the emotions I want to feel in a romance read and then some! The ending was perfect and I highly recommend to anyone just wanting to get lost in a happy and fun read!
10 Dates by Emily James was a fun, light-hearted, laugh out loud romances. I couldn't help but have a smile on my face from start to finish. The main characters were witty and feisty! If you like a hot and heavy romance filled with comedy, read this book.
I absolutely LOVED this book! I zipped right through it because it was so good I could hardly put it down! This is my one of my favorite type of books to read. I love all the humor and tom foolery going on in this story. I sit reading this with either a smirk, a smile or laughing with some snorting mixed in. How much more enjoyable can a book get? Ok add in a some hot bodies and messing around and then it's a fantastic book....wait that IS this book! Speaking of messing around the kisses that "Six" lays on "Four" are deliciously yummy. This story really takes off once she meets her hot neighbor with delicious looking abs of steel or poster-perfect body(as she later describes him). They start off by calling each other by their apartment names when he tries to deliver a lost shoe he found after she tried to climb in through the window since the foyer door was stuck. I laughed at this great beginning. After embarrassing herself a couple times in front of "Six" ( sexy as sin neighbor) Joanie (also known as Four) now makes a thorough check of the hallway via the peephole to make sure he isn't lurking waiting to tease her about their latest encounter. She feels like a peeping Tom and she swears he knows she's looking at him through the hole. But he couldn't right? Her best friends Mikey and Melinda are a hoot! Melinda is bound determined to get them both with a man in 10 days of dating 10 men. Poor Mikey gets stuck with cooking classes while Joanie dates 10 men. Not only are her dates one crazy nightmare after another. Her neighbor Six is getting more on her nerves with all the stunts he pulls just to annoy her along with picking on her about her dates. Who needs a hunky man telling her what to do? Not Joanie! That's who!
I'm so so glad that there is going to be another book by this author. This book was perfect and I can not wait for more craziness in the next one! Look Out Melinda! They are coming for you!
I absolutely LOVED this book! Joanie Fox is a character that is very relatable. This book had me laughing out loud until my tummy hurt! She is so fun and down to Earth. Her two best friends just added such a depth to the story. It is a fun book that I couldn't put down. It is a perfect quick read for the pool or just to get out of a real life funk. It is witty and the story flowed really well. I didn't want it to end. Everyone has a friend like Joanie, Mikey, or Melinda. Joanie is clumsy and very much accident prone. Melinda has a good head on her shoulders, loves to plan, and is the mother when of the group. Mickey is all balls to the wall and throws his whole self into everything he does.
Joanie hopes that the boyfriend she has had for three years finally proposes. Chris is a piece of work! Her best friends know she is just settling, but support her anyway. Joanie only wants to be married. Melinda has been married for years, has children, and Joanie wants that. When the engagement falls through and Chris moves across the pond to New York, Joanie realizes that he wasn't her soul mate. She needs someone better in her life and not settle because of her dream to be married. Joanie's friends are there to help her pick up the pieces and move on. Melinda comes up with this brilliant plan of 10 dates in 10 days. Statistically 1:10 men are dateable. Joanie wasn't sure about 10 blind dates, but threw all caution to the wind and went for it.
A must read rom-com! You have to find out what happens on all her dates especially when her hot neighbor gets thrown into the mix and sends Joanie into a tailspin! This is an excellent story that will have you laughing until you cry. It is one of those books that I have told all my friends that they have to read it!
This is one of those books that had me laughing through the whole thing. The main character’s adventures and mishaps in the dating world are very funny. She is awkward and clumsy and cute and funny and determined and I completely identify with her attachment to her parking space.
The premise of the story is this: The main character is recently single (good riddance you jerk) and her (well meaning, over bearing, and too much in everyone’s business) friend Melinda decides that finding the right guy and love is all about the numbers. Essentially you have to date enough different guys to find the one that’s right for you. (This actually is how I dated many years ago..lol). Melinda was actually pretty meticulous and organized about the list of potential dates, she could do some real damage in the world if she put that brain power to use. But this is someone else’s story.
If I had the hard copy of this book and a yellow highlighter to point out my favorite lines, it would be basically a bunch of white spots in between long lines of yellow. Emily James writes in such a way that I could absolutely visualize each date and mishap as it went down. Good stuff. I want to share some of my favorite lines with you, but mentioning “penis-gate” out of context would just be weird, wouldn’t it?
In addition to the dates, we get to watch her interactions with the hot neighbor. She lives in Apt. 4 and he lives in Apt. 6 and they call each other by their apartment numbers. It’s not until the very end that we find out his name.
The other friends absolutely deserve their stories to be told also. I hope you enjoy and chuckle as much as I did.
Funny Comical Romance!! 10 Dates is a funny sexy romantic novel by Emily James that will have you laughing out loud! I love these characters and the things they say to each other only friends can say. Loads of fun! Joanie Fox has been waiting a long time for her boyfriend to pop the question and has thrown together a party just like he asked her to. This is the first comical scene. What a disaster it has become with Joanie extremely hurt in more ways than one. Joanie is very disappointed that things have not turned out the way she had hoped. Her friend has reminded her that sometimes you must kiss a lot of frogs before you find the prince. The building Joanie lives in has some crazy characters and one gets on her nerves. He is hot sexy and single and seems to always be where she is. He likes to play games with her to frustrate Joanie because he knows it flusters her. Joanie starts the search and some of the guys are good and some of them bad, kissing frogs trying to find the prince. When I started this book, I thought Joanie was going to be a weak person because her boyfriend leads her around and told her what to do, but as I went along she became stronger and stronger and I really ended up liking her character. Will she find Mr. Right or is she doomed to only have bad relationships? Can her friends help find the right dates? Will 10 dates be enough? This is my first read by Emily James and I must say I can’t wait for the next book. I love it when characters jump off a page and have you laughing and gasping at what is going to happen next. Emily James has a very creative writing style that I enjoyed immensely. Her writing is smooth and easy to follow. If you like funny, witty reads then this book is for you!!
10 Dates: A fun and sexy romantic comedy novel By: Emily James 5 out of 5 stars
The story 10 Dates: A fun and sexy romantic comedy novel by Emily James is a humorous romance book. Joanie Fox’s best friend begins an intervention when Joanie’s engagement to her current boyfriend goes south. It involves 10 Dates in 10 Days. What a concept! The thinking is that there has to be one that is not too bad. What happens next had me laughing so hard that I almost fell off my couch while holding my side. Will this approach work for Joanie? Will she finally find her true love?
This is the first book I have read by the author and I have to say she has created a book that I am sure to read over and over. It is just too good not to. Not only is the laugh factor above a 10, it also gives me a good reason to turn down the next blind date that my best friend sets me up on. Most of the dates that Joanie ends up on are so over the top. Let’s just say that I will not be going on a date on the internet, ever. I really felt for Joanie as she is trying to find someone however it just doesn’t seem that the dates her best friend sets her up on are working. I love Joanie’s character. She is a sassy woman who seems to not be able to find Mr. Right. She doesn’t seem to have a lot of confidence in herself in regards to relationships and believes that she will grow old alone. I also found a lot of humor in her interactions with her neighbors. The bantering back and forth between Joanie and her friends shows their deep friendship and is another reason that this book had me laughing so hard. Read this book to find out if Joanie finally finds her HEA! This book does have some mature themes and sexual content. It would be recommended for those 18 years of age or older.
10 DATES: A FUN AND SEXY ROMANTIC COMEDY NOVEL AUTHOR: EMILY JAMES
FIVE STARS
10 DATES by Emily James is the funniest, most exciting book I have read in a long time. Emily’s sense of humor shines through in every hilarious encounter. Her characters are witty, lovable and charming. It is a standalone novel, chock full of adventure, sexy romance, laugh until you cry humor, and situations you never want to be in. I highly recommend this book to everyone that enjoys a good laugh.
I LOVE JOANIE FOX. She is such a charming, caring, good sport. Joanie is so excited that her long time boyfriend, Chris, is finally going to pop the question. The big night arrives. Everything is perfect. Well almost. Joanie gets the shock of her life when she realizes that Chris’s big announcement has nothing to do with her. He is moving across the country to try and launch his new business. And she is not included. Joanie thought her world was falling apart until her best friends, Melinda and Mikey, always by her side, step up to make sure she realizes what a sleazebag he is and move on.
Melinda comes up with the perfect scheme. She sets up Joanie on 10 hilariously funny blind dates to find Mr. Right. You will laugh hysterically at the antics. As Joanie endures each date, she is convince that she is going to be alone forever. However, her life was changing right before her eyes. She just wasn’t aware. Well….love always shows up when you least expect it…..and sometimes with someone very unlikely.
I am not going to spoil the ending. You will have to (and should) read this terrific book for “The Rest Of The Story”.
10 Dates: A Fun and sexy romantic comedy novel by Emily James is the first book I have read by this author. The descriptive characters and witty dialogue had me laughing through the whole story. Ms. James had me hooked from the very first page. I really liked the interaction between Joanie and her friends Mikey and Melinda. The the hot sexy dialogue between her and six was off the charts.
Joanie ( also known as 4 because that it the apartment number she lives in) is expecting a marriage proposal from hread long time boyfriend, Chris, at a New Year's Eve party she has thrown in honor of his new dating app. What she got was Chris telling her he was moving to New York and leaving her behind.
After Chris left, Melinda and Mikey decide that she needs to start dating right away. The idea was Melinda would set Joanie up on ten dates in a row and one of them would definitely be the one for her. What ensues is totally hilarious. The different situations that happen on the dates, couldn't be more fun to read.
In the meantime, Joanie has had interaction with her neighbor, six. Six is not in agreement with the blind date plan, but is enlisted to help Joanie when she has some trouble on some of her dates. As they get to know each other the chemistry intensifies.
I couldn't put this book down. It is truly enjoyable from the first page to the last. I'm putting Emily James on my to be read list. Loved this book!
After reading the very first three pages I felt something was wrong. Thankfully this time wrong is really right. I really can’t stop laughing. “Four” is hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud many times throughout this book. 10 Dates has to be one of the funniest stories I have ever read. Emily James is able to portray Four’s determination to find Mr. Right as well as her pain and suffering from each date and then her general tiredness towards the end of the story. I could really sympathize with her.
Our main characters are Four and Six. Four and Six are neighbors and instead of being polite and learning each other’s names, they start calling each other by their apartment numbers; Four (her) and Six (him). These two are instantly attracted to each other buy try desperately to deny their feelings. Four, who we learn early on is really Joanie. If she didn’t have all the bad luck she wouldn’t have any luck at all. She has been looking for Mr. Right for some time. She knows in her heart of hearts that everyone has a Mr. Right somewhere. For this story Joanie has her loving friends try to help her find him, which leads to ten blind and embarrassing dates. Joanie is quite a character and if she was a real person I would want her as a best friend. She is quirky but very funny. She is very deserving of a happily ever after.
I recommend this story and am looking to what else Emily James dreams up.
I have never read a book by this author and now i want to know why? This book was hilarious and the story was cute. The character development was great and you could easily imagine the characters as you dive headfirst into the story. I didn’t want to put the book down in fear of what shenanigan was going to happen next. There are plenty of those from the start the champagne cork to the eye on what Joanie thought was her engagement night when it turns out her boyfriend was moving across the ocean to New York. Then after breaking up with the boyfriend there was the standing in the hall of her building in just her panties. Then the infamous towel incident with 6, and thus begins the sordid affair.
After finally agreeing to get back out immediately Joanie’s friend immediately starts to work up a spreadsheet of all available guys in and around their lives and gets Joanie to agree to 10 dates. She doesn’t even pick the men she lets Mikey her gay best friend pick them. Her first date was a disaster so it can only go up from here right? The second date she is given precise directions on what to wear and to have a drink. While waiting for her arranged cab there is another run in with number 6 and she can't help but think of what she got a look at before. Will she make it through all 10 dates?
“10 Dates” by Emily James is a hilarious romantic comedy that hooked me from the very beginning.
Joanie Fox, also referred to as Four in the book, life is in a rut and all she wants is to get married and start a family. After wasting three years on a relationship that went nowhere, she is ready to give up on men and spend her nights curled up on the sofa with ice cream. But her two besties have other ideas and soon Joanie is preparing for a dating frenzy – ten dates in ten days. Will Joanie find her happily ever after or just end up with a lot of frogs?
This book is absolutely hilarious! I found myself laughing out loud for most of it, with an occasional snort or two, so you may want to be careful where you read it. The various dates that Joanie goes on are one disaster after another and make for great comedic fare. This leads to many hallway encounters with her sexy neighbor Six and the chemistry between the two is off the charts! The characters are relatable and well written, with a cast of supporting characters that get their own moments to shine. (And Melinda is getting her own book – yay!) The author does an excellent job of balancing a lot of humor with romance while keeping the story moving at a steady pace.
This is my first book by the author and it won’t be my last. I highly recommend this 4-star read.
Omgosh!!! I loved this book!! The author's sense of humour is totally off the charts !!! I laughed all through this beautiful comedy love story. Sex envy, loved this term!! Joanie has just broken up with her douchebag fiance after three years. She was expecting a marriage proposal but received something else. Joanie's new neighbor, who lives in apartment six, is hot, sexy and frustrating. A restaurant and casino owner. Six has caught Four (his name for her since she lives in apartment number four) in a few bare predicaments and seems to be rescuing her often like a damsel in distress. Four promised her best friend, Melinda, that she would go out on ten dates for the next ten days with ten different guys in order to experience the love department. My favorites were military/broken azz, cop/cookie stoner and Mr. Burns/tits. You will have to read the book in order to understand these meanings and you won't regret it! Emily James has written a hilarious and entertaining story that will captivate you from the beginning and will keep you laughing throughout this amazing story.. It was cute how she used their apartment numbers as their names. I loved all the characters including Four's mum. I would definitely recommend this fabulous book! I'm volunteering an honest review for an advance reader's copy.
10 Dates by Emily James is a cute and humorous story about Joanie and her saga of dating after a breakup. I chuckled several times but I didn’t have the laugh out loud moments like I was hoping but there were a few times it came very close.
Joanie is trying to move on after a breakup with her boyfriend of three years. On the night of the breakup she meets her new neighbor who is HOT. They seem to grate on one another’s nerves something fierce and Joanie manages to embarrass herself almost every time they run into one another.
One of her best friends, Melinda decides that Joanie and their friend Mikey need to go on ten dates in ten days and one of those will be the one. Both are reluctant but agree to do it. Joanie is eased into the dating thing with an old friend from high school and that ends up being the tamest of the dates she experiences.
I enjoyed this story and loved how “Six” would antagonize Joanie who he referred to as “Four” and how Joanie never seemed to be at her best around him. I thought this was a well written book and the humor and sarcasm just added to the book for me. This is the first book I have read by Ms. James but it will not be the last.
Joan has waited for years for her proposal, and tonight―New Year's at midnight―was THE night. What she got instead was her boyfriend's unexpected announcement to move to NY to launch his new dating app. The even ended with her drunk butt landing on a cake, topped with frosting and drenched in champagne.
Shortly after her New Year's disaster, she runs into her hot, sexy neighbor, who is as arrogant as can be. The last thing she needed was to be annoyed by his conceited antics or to be haunted by that penis that she accidentally grabbed to break her fall. Ooopsie!
Joan is clumsy and a bit of a scatterbrain. I liked how she gets into these funny situations, but her delivery (way she describes them) could use a little work. The dates were interesting, but the read was mediocre.
This was such a funny book! I had to keep reading and find out how each of Joanie's 10 dates went! And all I can say is thank goodness for Melinda and her meddling. Thank goodness for her pushing Joanie out on these dates and forcing her out of her comfort zone. All while dealing with her own personal drama.
This was a first book I've read by this author but it won't be the last. I need to know how Melinda's story ends! And hope we see more of Joanie and Mikey also.
10 Dates is a romance novel written by Emily James with a happy ending that I loved from the first chapter until the end of the book! The story takes place in England, and it's about a woman named Joanie, who has been dating a guy named Chris for 3 years, and she has been led to believe by him that this is the year that he will propose to her. She really is convinced that this is the year since Chris had her help him set up a party with him, at the spur of the moment, but didn't tell her what the party was for, and had her invite her friends and family, too. Joanie's best friends, Melinda and Mikey have come to the party, but her parents couldn't come since they are retired and have moved to Spain. Melinda doesn't like Chris at all, most especially because 2 weeks after he and Joanie started dating, he cheated on Joanie with her upstairs neighbor, Barbara. Joanie forgave him because he apologized and she thinks that he's been trying to make up for it since then. It's New Year's Eve, and Joanie is expecting Chris to propose before the New Year rings in. When he calls her up on the stage, she knows that this is the moment that she has been waiting for, but instead Chris announces that he will miss her because he is moving to New York City to expand his company for his dating app. Joanie is shocked, furious, devastated, and takes the mike stand and hits Chris over the head with it. She thinks that no man will ever find her attractive or want to marry her, and that at the age of 35 she's going to end up a spinster. Chris comes to her apartment the next day, since he has texted her numerous times and she did not answer. He yells and bangs on the door for Joanie to unlock it and let him in, but she ignores him. He says that he feels that he may have been “insensitive” announcing his move to NYC on the stage, especially since he knows how much Joanie will miss him while he's gone. He also tells her that he forgives her for hitting him with the mike stand. When Joanie, dressed only in her fancy underwear that she wore to start her engagement off with “ a bang”, flies to the front door and flings it open, because she is so angry that she can't take it any more, Chris is gone. She looks up and down the hallway until she feels a tap on her shoulder and hears a deep, gravely voice over her shoulder that she doesn't recognize.
The man that the voice belongs to, (Six), says, “Hi neighbor. Is this yours...?” Joanie looks at him and sees one of most handsome and sexy men that she has ever seen, dressed in jeans and a fitted shirt, and he just happens to be holding a shoe that she recognizes to be her black, sling-backed shoe that she bought at a Christmas sale. When she realizes that she's practically naked, she's embarrassed and angry, and takes it out on her neighbor saying, “Can I help you? What? You've never seen a woman in a hallway in her underwear before?” Joanie then runs into her apartment and attempts to slam her door, but before she can do that, he jams his foot in the door, and holds the shoe dangling from his index finger. His dark eyes demand her attention. She stares up at them, marveling in the arch of his brow and she decides that she must deny all knowledge of the shoe. “Actually, I found this in the foyer and I wondered if it was yours?” His mouth curves up into a grin. “No. Nothing to do with me.” I lie as her mind wanders back to that morning.
Six is Joanie's, (or “Four” as he calls her, because that is her apartment number), sexy neighbor. Six is a restaurant and casino owner, who always seems to becoming home in the middle of the night. After their first meeting, Six comes to Joanie's rescue when Chris comes to her apartment again. Joanie tells Chris she is breaking up with him and that she never wants to see him again, when she is coming in to her apartment after a night out with her friends, and finds Chris is waiting for her in the foyer. Six hears them yelling, and comes to the foyer dressed only in a towel, to make sure that Joanie is okay. Chris reluctantly leaves when Joanie tells Six that she's okay and that Chris is leaving.
After Joanie finally breaks up with Chris, Melinda decides that Joanie needs to go dating again and arranges for her to go on 10 dates on 10 consecutive nights, with 10 different guys. Joanie goes out on these dates, even though she doesn't really want to do it. She also continues to run into Six, who she is not being very nice to at all, but that doesn't stop Six from flirting with her.
I loved this book! It's about a girl who doesn't see her self-worth, and is ready to settle for a guy who isn't good enough for her because she is afraid of being alone. The book is funny, sexy, and romantic, and it follows Joanie and Six as they get to know each other, even though Joanie is going out on these 10 dates that she ends up telling Six all about. I don't want to say anything else because I don't want to give anything away, but I'll just let you know that Joanie has many crazy adventures!
I love Emily James writing style because she knows how to tell a compelling story with humor, that had me laughing out loud many times throughout the book. The book has some steamy, sexy scenes that she also wrote very well, so this story really keeps the reader interested. I highly recommend this book to all romance book lovers!
