The first installment of Cassandra Clare's bestselling urban fantasy series, The Mortal Instruments, is adapted into a graphic novel series!
Hanging out with her best friend, Simon, is just about the most exciting thing in Clary's life...that is, until she realizes there are people only she can see. But when her mother disappears and a monster attacks her, Clary has to embrace a world that she never even knew existed--a world full of vampires, werewolves, demons, and those who fight for the humans, Shadowhunters...
Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Tehran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.
Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and which later inspired her current pen name).
After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again. Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.
City of Bones was her first novel. Sword Catcher is her most recent novel.
I somehow ended up loving this, when I honestly thought I'd hate it. I'm not a massive fan of City of Bones, I much prefer Cassandra Clare's later works, but I felt the story worked REALLY well as a graphic novel. It was fun to relive the story through this format! Excited for the next volume.
love this! it was a bit bland (story wise) since they tried to fit in a lot in a short time frame, but overall still had fun reading it. this also made me want to rewatch the movie for 1000th time so i’ll definitely be doing that asap
Now I'm no expert on these matters, so I don't know what I'm looking for here... It was okay to say this is my first ever Graphic Novel. It's just a shame it's not the full version and there's a second part.
The things I liked? - We got to see the Falcon story Jace tells Clary - Little bits of pieces, there's a book on Peru in Magnus's room which was very fitting! - The height difference between Jace and Clary was so cute! - CHURCH! Anytime I see anything church related I can't help but smile... - We got quite a lot of information and it was really easy to follow - Rat Simon was so adorable
What I didn't like? - The drawings sometimes seemed off, I don't know how to put it, I'd seen Cassandra Jeans previous work and it wasn't like what she had drawn before for the series. - I'm salty it wasn't the full version OKAY - Why was Simons hair dotted? - Izzi looked really really odd...
Overall, not what I expected, but still pretty enjoyable!
⇢The Art Honestly, I don’t even need to say much, Cassandra Jean’s art is always fantastic. Also, it was super cool to see how some of the side characters looked because I wasn’t quite sure how to imagine them!
⇢The Story I loved the way this was written, I think it did a great job of prioritizing the important information and cutting out the details that couldn’t fit. I definitely wouldn’t read this instead of reading the book, but if you want to experience it in a new way this is a good way to do it! The only thing that was weird to me was Jace, for some reason he just seemed different in the graphic novel than the books. Otherwise, no complaints! I wish I had read this earlier, honestly.
i saw this book at my library today, and of course, your mortal instruments lovin’ girl had to pick this up.
i loved this so much! i finished it one hour, and literally loved it. the illustrations are cute and the entire book just made me feel really happy and nostalgic. I’ll probably be checking this book out from my library every month since it just makes me really happy to read. <3
Just going to warn you now readers, it is controversial opinion time. I preferred this graphic novel format to the novel City of Bones (which I read a while back and only gave 3 stars to!) so here is why I preferred this more. Just from reading this visual edition, I understood the characters and the story-line a lot easier than before. I liked the artwork and fast pacing throughout. Maybe the series will be more enjoyable for me if I read these volumes rather than the books themselves? Time will tell...
It’s been years since I read The Mortal Instruments, so this has just been awesome!! Clary and her friends come alive in this graphic novel. They look almost like how I’d pictured them and that makes me sooooo happy!!!!
This is a fairly brief intro as a first installation and we have met most of our main characters. The plot grabs you and won’t let go. I just have to know what’s going to happen next!!! It’s well written and of course the art is absolutely to die for!!! The style is so amazing and fits the story perfectly.
I highly recommend this to those who enjoyed The Mortal Instruments as well as those who enjoy a good graphic novel with lots of fantasy elements. Sooo good!!!!
Who knew this was so funny? I loved this first graphic novel instalment of TMI!
*big shock* I have never read any of Cassandra Clare's books, (despite owning the whole TMI and TID series) but I wanted to try out TMI in graphic novel format first before I fully committed myself to the novels which are waaay thicker.
After reading this introductory volume, I'm really very intrigued by the plot and how it will continue. I loved Jace and Magnus but I think my favourite is Alec *swoon*
I have read the manga adaptation of TID and found the artwork stronger and much more detailed than the illustrations here; however, this did not detract away from my enjoyment of volume one and I shall definitely be continuing on with the series (and finally reading the full-length novels)!
Leí The Mortal Instruments: The Graphic Novel, Vol. 1 principalmente por curiosidad.
I'm not the biggest fan of graphic novels but The mortal instruments is the series that got me into reading and it's always gonna be a favorite of mine so of course I bought this new release!
And well, I love Cassandra Jean's drawings and the characters really look like how I've pictured them in my head. I didn't give 5 full stars just because the story moved too fast (even if this is just the first volume, the last scene is Magnus's party, before the Hotel Dumort's fight scene).
I especially loved Jace's story about his falcon, the cute af height difference between Jace and Clary and Simon and Izzy's first kiss (!!!)
There are also some coloured drawings of the six main characters at the beginning!
Initially I wasn’t taken with the art work which is very manga in style, but in the end really enjoyed it. This first volume was on Kindle Unlimited. Very sad the rest of the volumes are not!
The Mortal Instruments is brought to life again with this new graphic novel inspired by the first novel in the largely popular series. I loved seeing this story again with illustrations and the condensed story and the whole book was over far too quickly. Overall, it was a nice adaption of the first book in series and it seemed like while they covered a fair amount of the story but at times it was disjointed and without a flow. I also thought the illustration of the characters didn’t really match or was too childish to suit the young adults they are but is the author thinks the characters suit what she originally had in mind then that is good enough for me.
I would have loved nothing more than to catapult her through one of her portals into the darkest corner of hell. She is one of the worst female main characters that I have ever encountered and the sole reason why I never enjoyed The Mortal Instruments. Jace is also at fault, but he's a Herondale, and a descendant of Will, so all is forgiven.
But I put my big girl panties on and read this anyway. And I liked it. A lot more than the actual book. The illustrations are beautiful - as was expected of Cassandra Jean - and make the plot a lot more interesting than it actually is.
3.5 stars I loved reading this and read it in basically two sittings. I’m not sure if I would’ve loved it as much had I not read the full novels of the mortal instruments though. It would be hard to tell. But as it was, I would 100% go back to these graphic if I need a quick Shadowhunter fix and/or refresh on the story but don’t have time for a full series reread. I didn’t like the art style quite as much as the first graphic novel I read a couple weeks back but it wasn’t bad. I definitely also would’ve preferred color to black and white. I will definitely read the other volumes.
Me, everytime a new Shadowhunter book comes out: Again, Cassandra Clare?! I am not buying that!
2 months later...
Me, after reading it:
I LOVE YOU AND I WILL REREAD YOU A HUNDRED TIMES BECAUSE
Besides some of the illustrations being a bit off **cough** Isabelle **cough**...
I thought this was a super fun adaptation! I love a good graphic novel because I love to reread books and I don't always want to invest several days when I have a million books on my tbr to get through.
Is it fair of me to read graphic novels and score them badly knowing that I hate graphic novels?
This felt extremely low effort. I'm not a fan of Cassandra Jean's artwork for the Mortal Instruments universe and it didn't do any better in graphic novel form. This was an extremely brief book, that entirely skipped big chunks of important information and seemed to rely heavily on you having read the novels.
