Sparrow Falls #3

Run Devil Run

Rate this book
In Sparrow Falls, Louisiana roots run deep.

For generations, Aaron Talley’s family has practiced hoodoo. It is their legacy.

When Aaron was a little boy he believed the things his grandmama told him. Then he grew up and left hoodoo behind. He traded in his knowledge of goofer dust for the cheap chemistry of cooking meth. He forgot all of the things that made him different and those things forgot about him, too.

Or so he thought.

Aaron is a grown man now and living a life he might not have been destined for, but that he’s sure is a better fit. Then a chance encounter with a childhood friend drags all of the things Aaron tried to abandon back into the light.

But that’s not even half of it.

His real problems start with an angry old woman waiting for him by his mailbox one day. The day after that, he finds Xs etched into the soil of his driveway and knows it’s bad news. When he starts to get sick and everyone he loves begins to hate him, he realizes it’s even worse than he thought. He’s been crossed—jinxed, cursed; condemned to death by the very power he turned his back on.

Aaron can get the cure to that which ails him, but he has to do something in exchange for it. It’s a limited time offer though and if Aaron wants to see the next day then he has to run like the devil. The real question is: Can he?

5+Stars!

I am in awe of Justine Sebastian. To get me to care for a lowlife like Aaron Talley is nothing short of astonishing. But I do care. And my heart was breaking for most of this story. The best part? He doesn't even try to redeem himself. To make himself a better person, learn from his experiences. Nope. He's a lowlife, and he's just fine with that. And so am I.

"Aaron and Nick understood one another in ways that Hylas would never understand either of them. They were not good men, they didn’t always do the right or even the kind thing. They were criminals and not altogether trustworthy as a rule though Nick was much reformed, especially compared to Aaron. But they knew those things about one another and had secrets shared between them that they’d never tell anyone else."

While my heart was breaking, it was also racing. My fingers trying to keep up with the quickly turning pages, because this story just grabbed me, held on and would not let go. It was like riding on a roller coaster (I hate roller coasters), I was breathless until the end. Damn, this book was good! Probably my favourite of the series.

"But you look like shit.” “I always look like this.” “No, man, you absolutely do not always look like this,” Hylas said. “You’re usually cute as a bug if that bug was an angry serial killer that sucked the souls out of bunnies."

I cannot recommend this series or this book highly enough.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this entire series !!

Including visiting Sparrow Falls and it's amazing supernatural residents . It would be spoilerish to divulge what or who they are .

This author is an exciting storyteller , and as you are hearing the story from the main character's point of view and are , therefore , privy to their thoughts , you find yourself rooting for Aaron ..... meth cook , and part time sociopath ( and in his defence mostly self aware ) .

I think another of this authors strengths is amongst the extraordinary characters , there are very ordinary ones , with all their individual quirks fully on display .

There's even some sly humour slipped in for good measure .

I absolutely recommend this series !!!

With this book the author Justine Sebastian delivers a great addition to this series.
It's set in Sparrow Falls, a town with an unusual high crime and strange-goings-on rate.
In Sparrow Falls going for a walk alone meant you might not make it home alive or if you did, you might be missing a limb or an eye.

A lot of people living there are just as strange and they are keeping secrets!
One of them is our MC Aaron Talley. He's an angry man, often mean and getting rough. Maybe even a sociopath?
Psychopaths were born; sociopaths were made and Aaron had ample amounts of bad juju from his early childhood to qualify him for sociopath-hood. Maybe that was it then, maybe there was something bent to the point of being broken inside of Aaron. So badly that even if he didn't actively want to kill or hurt people, he didn't mind it too much when he did, save a select few.

These select few he cared for, were his dogs, his boyfriend Jason, his best friend Hylas and maybe to a small amount even their mutual friend Nick.

Now when Rachel Blackwell, the grandma of his childhood friend Trina, asks him to find her kidnapped granddaughter and their child, he's absolutely not interested. Oh no, he prefers to chase her away!
The problem is, that Rachel practices hoodoo, just like his own, deceased grandma had done. And stupid him had refused to learn it from her!
So Rachel jinxes him and his only chance to survive the next days, is to find Trina.
He wasn't doing this because he wanted to do it, he was doing it because an old swamp witch was holding him hostage in a way that had nada to do with duct tape and zip ties.

And he has to find her fast, really fast, because time is running out!
"Time's a-wastin', Aaron Talley!"

You should never underestimate the power of hoodoo! ;)

This is an awesome series! All the characters are so original. They're flawed, but somehow deep down they're good people and the author actually manages, that you care about them. You just have to love them!

I loved it! Just as good as Sparrow Falls series books 1&2 which I read Jan 2017. Unique complex characters (love -hate them and are constantly confused by them) and story line wow! Mystery, drugs, violence, sex, love -I had no idea where it was going and got caught by surprises even in the last pages. Not predictable !! Highly recommend the series😊 I plan to read more of Justine Sebastian as I really like her style of books.

stonkingly good, if you like dark, heavy paranormal m/m with more than a helping of violence and serious grit.

This author can write. Whether you will like her writing is another thing, but I loved this.
