Loving her wasn’t what he’d promised…Hayden Hawkins made a deathbed promise to his brother Hayden would watch over Ian’s son Nick, and the boy’s mother, Ronni. Despite Hayden’s initial feelings for Ronni, everything changed when she captured—then broke—Ian’s heart. Hayden’s avoided her since.
Now Nick’s in trouble and needs Hayden’s guidance. It’s time to keep his promise. But getting close to Ronni stirs up old emotions, not all of them good. Then there’s the new chemistry they’re both feeling.
The last thing Ronni needs is to get involved with former Marine Hayden, notoriously known as the love ‘em and leave ‘em member of the Hawkins family. Not that he’d want her anyway. Her own husband hadn’t wanted her…the cheating husband she’d intended to divorce before an IED in the Middle East blew up her entire life, trapping her in a prison of the vows he’d broken.
Hayden can’t help but feel for her. She’s not the woman he thought she was. She’s so much more.
She deserves happiness.
But neither of them can see how that’s possible.

Books have always been my constant companions, all the way back to when I was reading Gus, The Friendly Ghost from the Weekly Reader Book Club. I grew up in a house of readers, and my mom bought me books like other parents bought their kids candy. I did well in school, finishing my work quickly - so I could read. I never went anywhere without a book. It was no surprise that in high school, I was voted Class Bookworm - and scored the Valedictorian slot. (Yes, I was slightly geeky. But only slightly. Never mind what my high school classmates say. )
In elementary school, I loved writing stories and keeping a journal. In high school, I wrote lots of poetry filled with the usual teen-age angst. I wrote the lyrics to my brand-new high school's alma mater. But did I ever consider a career as a writer back then? No, not at all.
I went to college and became an elementary teacher, spending ten years passing on my love for books and reading to children. I adored being a teacher. I will admit, the year I was pregnant with my son, I actually started a novel for young adults, and I outlined a concept for some children's series books. But, those things fell by the wayside.
Then I moved from New Jersey, the state where I'd been born and raised and worked for all those years. After a one year stint in West Virginia, I landed in Erie, Pennsylvania. I absolutely love Erie - though I love it most in June, July, and August. But I discovered that getting a teacher's certificate in PA is....well, not easy, to say the least. I taught in a private school here the first year, then I homeschooled my son for a year. At the end of that year, I needed SOMETHING to restore my sanity (let me just say that I admire those who can homeschool successfully - for me, I wanted to trade my son, whom I love very much, in for 25 kids that belonged to other people) - and I turned to writing fiction.
I started by dabbling in fanfiction, and wrote like a woman possessed. (After all, I did hear voices in my head. ) I learned a lot about the craft of writing from other fanfiction writers. Over and over again, romances surfaced in my fanfiction stories.
Then, in Dec. 1999, I decided that I was going to go for it. I made it my New Year's Resolution to learn all I could about writing romance, and to do it. I had a five-year goal - I wanted to sell a novel by the time I turned 40 - five years from then. I did reserve the right to modify that goal in the future. I signed up for an on-line writing romance class, joined Romance Writers of America and Pennwriters, and started writing my first romance novel.
Which had some serious failings. ;-) But I finished it. A whole novel. And sent off a query letter and received the rite-of-passage, a form rejection. I retitled the book, reworked it toward another publisher, sent off another query, received another rejection. Hey, no one ever said it was going to be easy.
Meanwhile, I'd started another book, and while the characters were a lot of fun, I wasn't totally sure where the story was going.
Somehow, the basic premise for The Baby Plan was born while I was playing with GMC's (Goal, Motivation, & Conflicts) for that other book. Then, Harley sprang to life, and that was it. The other book had to be abandoned, because Harley insisted I write her story. She wouldn't let me rest.
In February of 2002, I got THE CALL from Harlequin Superromance ®, saying they wanted to buy The Baby Plan. I did my best to act dignified on the phone, then yelled like a banshee when I hung up. To say I was thrilled is the understatement of the century.
I've now gone Indie with my books, and I'm loving being in complete control over the decisions I make with my books. I hope you enjoy them.
This book is Hayden's and I have loved him in the previous books, he's an ex-marine turned teacher and is wonderful with his cousins and family even though he is not the commitment sort, only thirty days with a woman, when he gets a call he never expected Ronni's, she the mother of his nephew, the son of his dead brother Ian and ever since Ian died they have not had any contact despite his nephew, you see the whole family blames Ronni for breaking Ian's heart.
Nick has been caught with pot and Ronni calls him to help him, when Hayden sees her he can't believe she is the same woman, she seems to have lost all her vibrancy and her eyes show so much sorrow. As they talk Hayden realizes that all his family have been unfair to her, they put their loss on her and when she too was grieving.
Ronni got pregnant at sixteen and her parents kicked her out and then Ian got cancer and gave up, so Ronni told him to call her when he was ready to fight but he died and she has lived with guilt ever since and then there is her husband Scott in a permanent vegetative state.
Hayden realizes that there are some secrets to do with her marriage, she doesn't wear a ring and Nick seems to hate Scott as well and a news-report brings about a confession, Ronni was on the verge of divorcing Scott since he kept in cheating on her, when he had the accident but she sticks with him out of responsibility and obligation, she also doesn't know but finds out later that Nick has known the truth all along.
Poor Hayden he falls big time for her, even had a crush on her when they were younger but knows that Ronni won't leave her husband and the one time they are together he even wishes she gets pregnant and is offended when she compares herself to his other women. I loved how he couldn't look at any other woman since Ronni came into his life, he wanted to be a family with her.
I also liked how Ronni finally saw that she didn't have to tie her life up in guilt when things weren't her fault.
4 1/2 Stars~ Thirteen years ago Hayden had promised his dying brother to look after his girlfriend and their son. Hayden had always blamed Ronni for abandoning Ian when he was dying, and the promise had not been kept. Now with an urgent phone call, he can't refuse to finally live up to the promise. Fourteen year old Nick is in trouble and as part of his probation he needs a Big Brother, a role Ronni felt Hayden should fill instead of a stranger. Hayden realizes the woman asking for his help is a mere ghost of the vibrant teenager that broke his brother's heart. For 13 years Ronni's made sure her son, Nick, has attended all the Hawkins family functions, not once ever daring to come herself. Hayden makes his family realize they were wrong for shunning Ronni all these years. Since Ian's death, Ronni had married and for almost two years, her husband, after a road accident in Iraq, is lying in a vegetative state in a nursing home. A memorial day news story showcasing her husband brings to light the fact that the day of the road accident, Ronni had told her husband she wanted a divorce. The press eat up the scandal.. what kind of person would do that while their husband was on active duty? Learning all the facts makes Hayden even more determined to keep his promise to Ian, but now it's a promise he's keeping for himself too.
This is another wonderful heartwarming love story from Ms. Gable. In the previous two Hawkins stories, Hayden shined as the love 'em and leave 'em guy who took great pleasure in teasing his brothers when they fell in love. It was wonderful for Greg and Finn to get their brotherly payback now that the love bug has taken a chunk out of Hayden. Ronni's a woman who has deep regret for decisions she made as a teenager. She'd dearly love to roll back the clock and have a do-over. She's learned hard lessons but has always pulled herself up and been strong. And she's always put her son's needs first. It was great to read Hayden and Ronni's HEA journey. It's been a real treat to catch up with the Hawkins clan.
The longer format of a SuperRomance allows for stronger character development and for sub-plots to be more fully developed. This is a perfect format for family sagas. I've enjoyed tremendously Ms. Gables' stories of the Hawkins brothers and I do hope that she'll continue on as there are other siblings who need their HEA.

This is the third Hawkins Family book I’ve read and it certainly did not disappoint. Thoroughly enjoyed. I hope the author has more to come. There are several more siblings to write about and it would be great to read their story.
I fell in love with Greg and Shannon in a Hero to Keep. From what I can see the Hawkins brothers are all keepers. Ronni was married to Ian Hawkins brother to Greg, Flin, and Hayden. I haven't read Flin's story but with this one Hayden has made a promise to his brother Ian before he died. Ian got cancer and he convinced himself he'd never make it. Ronni showed tough love and he pushed her away and shut her out. She was trying to be strong for not just him but their son too.
Hayden was close to Ian and Ronni. He envied the relationship they shared and secretly crushed on her. When his brother spends the last two weeks gripping to life Hayden becomes absorbed with hate at the missing Ronni. The whole family abandons her but when Nick (Ian and Ronni's son) gets himself into trouble the only way to save his future is to invite Hayden back into their world. I admired Ronni's strength and how she holds on to a thread with not just Nick and a family who hates her but she has remarried.
So many layers make up this story from rebuilding past friendships to battling insecurity. Ronni's husband has portrayed stepfather to Nick and now he is left in a vegetative state. I am not a fan of another man being in the picture between my H/h but this was an interesting experience. It didn't bother me. There are a couple reasons why. Ronni isn't in love with Scott anymore (Ronni's husband) and it is obligation and guilt that holds her there.
Hayden has never let any woman close to a real relationship passed a 30 day trial. I really liked that the author did not let hate ad resentment absorb the family but allowed Nick to be placed first and what was best for him. They also were quick to realize their faults and let things go. It wasn't as powerful as Greg and Shannon's story but still an enjoyable story. Enjoy!
Gable always packs the emotion, and she certainly delivers in As Good as His Word. Solid story, big issues, felt like it needed more space for whole story. Always enjoy SG's books & this was no exception.
A Promise to Keep: Hawkins Family Book 3 is by Susan Gable. This third book in the series of the Hawkins Family is definitely an emotional one. Susan has a knack for portraying honest emotion in her writing. She has taken a situation where a veteran is in a permanent vegetative state and his wife, who had asked him for a divorce due to his cheating, is continuing to take care of him because he is her husband. Such dedication to obligation, a little guilt, and even some love says a lot about the woman. However, does this mean her life is over? Ronni Mangano is trying to raise her son, Nick, alone since his Father had died. Ian Hawkins’ family was angry with her for leaving Ian two weeks prior to his death. For thirteen years, the only communication between them was only what was necessary for Nick to remain close to the Hawkins family. Even after her marriage to Scott Mangano, the Hawkins family kept close to Nick. Now, with Scott in a permanent vegetative state in a nursing home and now Nick being arrested, Ronnie has to give in and call the Hawkins’ family for help. She turns to Hayden Hawkins, Ian’s Irish twin, and once a friend of hers for help. Has she done the right thing? Hayden heeds her call for help for Nick. He promised his brother to take care of Nick and Ronni; but immediately after Ian’s death, he joined the Marines and was gone for years. Now he is back and is a teacher but he hasn’t forgotten his promise. When Ronni calls, he goes to help but makes it clear it is for Nick not her. He is surprised at the change in her, the laughing funny girl who married Ian is gone. A ghost of herself is standing in front of him. He knows he needs to work with her to help Nick. Can he do that? The book is an emotional rollercoaster but is really fun to read. Susan Gable makes you want to hear about the other brothers and sisters of the Hawkins’ family sooner rather than later.
Many might disagree with me, but Hayden Hawkins isn’t my favourite Hawkins brother. I’m sorry, but Fin is my favourite. But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love Hayden and Ronni. In some ways, I thought this was more Ronni’s story. I was certainly cheering her from the sidelines, although there were times when I wanted to spill her secrets, that is, when I finally found out what they were.
Once again, Susan Gable didn’t disappoint me. I was in my happy place as her words took me on an emotional journey with the Hawkins family. Not only did I get to catch up with the Hawkins family, but I was able to get to know Hayden. I finally got to know Captain Chemo. My problem now I what series will I read next.
A Semper Fi Love. Ronnie has had it tough; her first love died on her, her second cheated on her but she feels tied to him due to him having been seriously injured. Hayden, who saw his brother's heart broken by a woman, protects his by having a sell by date on his relationships. The two haven't seen each other for 13 years but are forced together when her son/his nephew gets in trouble with the law. A beautiful story with well rounded and believable characters. Highly recommended. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.
This is book three in the Hawkins Brothers series. I read the first in the series in 2018 and the second in 2019 so it’s been a while.
It’s official…Hayden Hawkins is my favorite of the Hawkins brothers. I loved reading his story. A Promise to Keep is a heartfelt story of promises made and promises not quite kept. It’s about misunderstandings and how jumping to conclusions never turns out well for anyone. Honor and duty play a large part in this story and how they caused some of those misunderstandings. I hesitate to call this a second chance story, but in a way it is. Gable will have you rooting for Ronni and Hayden!
A PROMISE TO KEEP by Susan Gable A Hawkins Family Story Hayden, his brother Ian son's was in trouble, Nick now 14 years old. Probation, thought he needed a man role in his life, and that would be with his uncle. Words hadn't been spoken in thirteen years because Rommi left before Ian died. The hurt, and they think he gave up because of it. A promise had been made, how difficult would it be, to be in Rommi and Nicks life now. Will they try for Nick. A good family story and of second chances. Good story that all ages will enjoy. Given ARC ,for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
I thought this was an okay book. It wasn't as good to me as the others in the series only because I felt like I couldn't connect with what the characters were going through. I didn't care for the characters as much as the previous ones from the other books. There was just a disconnect for me. I wish there was more in the series because I would definitely continue reading more of the series if there was one. Other than that one hang up for me, everything else was great about the book. I smiled at the cute, romantic parts and everything else.
If you haven't read the other two book, no worries. The author fills you in with information for this story . The information won't ruin the other books if you care to go back and read them. With that said, this is a sweet book that tugs at your heart. I think everyone dreams of having someone like Hayden to love.
While maybe qualifying as a beach read, I enjoyed book one enough to download the whole series. It’s a sweet, feel-good story, written well enough not to piss me off, and the characters are really likeable, even if possibly too perfect. It’s not a life changing social commentary but it’s a fun read. I really liked the whole series.
Hayden has stayed away but he can’t anymore. Ronni has avoid the family of her son for years. But once Hayden gets involved with his nephew to be his male influence when his nephew got in trouble. Hayden finds he still has feelings for Ronni but he has to help her get past the past to move forward with him.
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title. (Audible Membership)
A very complicated love romance, that had one brother that had fallen in love with a girl at first sight only to have to wait thirteen years and a lot of misunderstandings later, to have a chance to get to know the woman she had become.
Another wonderful emotionally charged romance with engaging characters and a fantastic plot. If you're looking for a great romantic love 💘story, then this book is for you. Happy ☺reading 📚!
This is my third book by Susan Gable this month. I want to be a part of this Hawkins' family. I've fallen in love with their devotion and caring ways. The loving is pretty spectacular too! Enjoy.
Hayden is a short term boyfriend until he get to know Ronnie again. She is the mother of his nephew, his deceased brother Ian's son. Lots of heartache and misunderstandings. That makes this a little sweeter when it all unfolds. Love these characters and books!
God Story line. Just too many details that weren't needed to make this a good book! Third book in the Hawkins FAMILY! The others were excellent books with great stories!
A worthy next chapter in the Hawkins family story. Romance, yes, but also a strong family is what matters storyline. I give it 5 stars but wish I had 6.
Loved the characters! You never want anyone hurt especially out military and even finding out what he did, Ronni was justified in doing what she did in the end.
