Poppleton and his friends enjoy all the pleasures that the chilly season has to offer, including both indoor, and outdoor activities. These were cute, gentle easy-to-read stories, AND a great way to celebrate the first day of winter.

I thought this book had a good story line as it talks about friendship lasting longer than icicles. Poppleton had a good relation with all his friends, and the author wrote the three short stories all well. Each story showed great connections, as it sums up to the end and proves to Poppleton that his friends were the best. I had found myself reading through this book fast and rereading it again, because my younger cousins liked the book so much. I had also thought the illustrations was done well, but it also reminded me so much of Cynthia Rylants books; such as the Mudge series. I would recommend this book to students in 1st and 2nd grade, because its easy to read and has great purposes.

First sentence: Poppleton's house grew very long icicles in winter.
Premise/plot: This early chapter book starring Poppleton and friends features three stories: "Icicles," "The Bust," and "The Sleigh Ride." In the first story, Poppleton may love his icicles a little too much. What will happen when they fall?! In the second story, Poppleton decides to make something. Winter is his best time for making. This year, what he decides upon is making a bust of his friend Cherry Sue's head. If only he could remember what she looks like! In the third story, Poppleton's disappointment turns to joy as his friends surprise him on his birthday.
My thoughts: I really enjoyed Poppleton in Winter. I want to read all the Poppleton books now. I enjoy spending time with him and his friends. The stories are delightful and charming. My favorite in this collection was "The Sleigh Ride."

1. Poppleton grows out his icicles until they accidentally get knocked off his house- his new friend will help him come up with a new way to enjoy his icicles.
2. Poppleton wants to carve a but of his friend Cherry Sue, but keeps forgetting the details of her face and needing to trudge over to have a good look at her.
3. Poppleton wonders why all of his friends are too busy cooking yummy treats to go on a sleigh ride with him. Then they show up at his house because he forgot it was his birthday!

The early chapter book features three stories of Poppleton the pig in the wintertime. The stories follow Poppleton making a fence out of icicles, creating a clay bust of his friend, making fudge, and more. I enjoy the stories because they are simple but entertaining, great for making inferences, and they show good values such as friendship and problem-solving.
I would use this book for a literature circle because the stories are easily digestible. This book is great for early readers because of its simple sentence structure, repetition, and decodable words. It would be a nice class read-aloud as well during the wintertime to spark discussion about winter activities and friendship.

I guess I'm in a minority. We've just read two of the Poppleton volumes and I just didn't like them (Miss 4 thought they were okay). We read so many books and I just think there are better ways of expressing friendship and social interactions.
Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

Poppleton is a pig and in this chapter level 3 book he has three different 'adventures' all of which incorporate his other animal friends within his stories. These chapters are 'small stories' so if you have a younger reader that can sit through the entire book still read these cute stories to them; They are to well written to overlook them.
Poppleton is enjoying the winter in each story. The first he has icicles that are very large hanging off his house. He enjoys them and each day measures them to see how much they have grown; even though everyone tells him he should break them down. One day, though, something happens to them but his friend Patrick helps him to see that in loosing something he enjoyed he also gains something even better!
The next story every winter he does something to help pass the time indoors and this winter he decided to make a sculpture of his neighbor. So when he starts he forgets exactly what she looks like so he keeps going over to her house. She does get frustrated until he finally tells her what he's doing and she feels very honored for him to want to do it so again in the end the two friends learn caring and compassion towards one another.
And the last story he is feeling lonely so calls his friends to go sledding with them but they are all busy and busy at baking! But he soon finds them all knocking at his door as he had forgotten his own birthday! But his friends were so fond of him they hadn't!
This was my 2 year old granddaughter and mine first Poppleton book and we enjoyed him so much we will be looking at our library to read more of him.

This book is geared for children learning to read, so I could see it being used in 1-2 grade classrooms. Poppleton is a pig who seems to get himself into situations, but his friendliness and kindness always prove beneficial in the end. The book is broken up into three chapters: Icicles, The Bust, and The Sleigh Ride. My favorite was The Sleigh Ride because I think children will enjoy the most. In this story, Poppleton calls three of his friends to go on a sleigh ride with him, but they are all making something delicious to eat. Poppleton begins to feel sorry for himself, but then his friends surprise him because he forgot it was his own birthday, so everything works out because him and his friends go on a midnight sleigh ride at the end. I found all of the stories to be very cute and to be a good model of kindness and friendship for young children. This is definitely an appropriate book for a progressing reader because it is still a simple picture book, but it is significantly longer and contains chapters. If I were to use this in a classroom, I would read one chapter each day. Otherwise, I would suggest this book for independent reading so that students can go at their own pace. Either way, CCSS 1.3 can be applied to it because each chapter contains a different set of characters and main events, but contains the same setting of winter.

Poppleton In Winter is an excellent book for young children in the earlier grades of Elementary school to read. In particular, I believe first graders would thoroughly enjoy this book. I loved reading it because Poppleton is a friendly pig that keeps himself busy with his good friends and creative winter projects. It is always fun to read stories about animals that live in a world where they can act as though they are humans. Poppleton enjoys parties and sleigh rides as well as dinner dates with his good friends. This book does a fantastic job of showing children how important it is to make new friends but keep the old because a friendship is a vital part of a childhood.

Poppleton has tons of icicles on his house which leads him to meet a new friend, Patrick. When Poppleton makes a bust of Cherry Sue, he keeps going over to her house when he can't remember what she looks like, which causes get to tweak his nose out of frustration. Poppleton wants to go for a sleigh ride, but all his friends are busy making delicious food. I love the surprise ending! I wish there were more books in this series.

This book contains three separate stories. One is about icicles on Poppleton’s house, the second is about something Poppleton is making for a friend, and the final story is about Poppleton’s birthday. The book would be a great resource for comparing and contrasting the three separate stories or making text-to-text connections.

This is another fun book in the Poppleton series by Cynthia Rylant. There are three short stories that can be read one at a time or all at once. Our girls have really enjoyed these tales and we will look for more books in this series at our local library.

This transitional chapter book is phenomenal for struggling readers. I've used this book for focus during chapter read alouds with my struggling readers. There are opportunities to focus on character traits. It gives students the confidence to read a chapter book that has many words and it still provides illustration.

Poppleton is not my favorite series by Rylant, and this is not one of the best set of stories.
And icicles are a sign you're heating your attic, which of course is wasteful, and you're also getting an ice dam, which will damage your roof.
Also the cover image is not in the book. But still this is the best of the ones I read, even if the last story is tropey.

I love Poppleton, I just can't help myself. He is not always the brightest character in the bunch, but he is kind, and funny, and talented. And although the obvious never occurs to Poppleton, everything between his friends and him always seems to work out.

This CCSS Text Exemplar (grades 2-3) is a top-notch early reader, with great text, high-level specialized vocab (icicle, bust, sleigh, etc.) that's easy to contextually determine.

This one was really good, instead of only one story being good out of three they all had good messages. I laughed multiple times at the Bust story. It was hilarious. I liked the messages in the Icicle story and the sleigh ride.

A nice little book. Gus the turtle mail carrier is adorable and Poppleton & the bird named Patrick eating dinner was too cute.
