Beyond This Moment

Rate this book
Lives are made up of tiny steps. Some are chosen for us; some we choose. All hold the power to change who we become—but only if we let them.

When Dr. Molly Whitcomb, Professor of Romance Languages, steps off the train in Colorado Territory, she makes a choice—one that goes against everything she stands for. Yet it’s the only choice that offers her a chance to regain a fraction of all she’s lost.

Sheriff James McPherson’s instincts about people rarely miss the mark. He senses Professor Whitcomb is hiding something. He just doesn’t know what. When James learns Molly’s secret, his own reputation is undermined. But when Molly Whitcomb’s reinvented life begins to unravel, it threatens his job, the stability of Timber Ridge, and what he always knew to be true about himself.

This book was much better than I expected! I didn't love the first of this series but Beyond This Moment captured my attention from the start.
This story revolved around a lie and so at first I was dragging my feet to continue reading it because the plot stressed me out so much 😬 -- however ... the way the story unraveled was so much better than I had anticipated and this is what I love about the way Tamera Alexander writes. This story wasn't predictable, it wasn't overly/unnecessarily dramatic-- it was perfect (to me at least) and very realistic.

There are some amazing characters in this book, young and old (I got very attached to them!) Who dealt with prejudice, racism and really just social stigmas of this time period. I loved the way the heroine handled it all as well as many of the other characters.
The way the story was written and the way the characters acted/reacted and expressed themselves made me see 'all sides' of the story and the reasons behind the actions. I love the way it turned out and am so looking forward to the third book in this series!

Reading the back cover blurb for the book a reader knows that the main character Molly Whitcomb has a secret that is reputation-ruin worthy. After reading the first chapter a reader knows what that secret is. I am quite certain there will be some readers who will give up right there on this book, but oh how I wish you would not.

This is not a story about making mistakes and moving on with life. This is a story about being a fallible human and living with it. There are times in life where your insides are screaming to just let this moment be gone, or just to be "beyond the moment". Yet, our heavenly Father knows what is best for us.

This novel is a sequel, but is quite a stand alone. It is powerful and edgy and really pushes the limits of your conscience and what-if scenarios. I highly recommend this read as one to deepen your heart and convictions and see the inside of some people you might have just ignored in different circumstances. Think hard about casting those stones.

Read this book and grow and learn from the experience.

I think this book did a really good job of showing how one seemingly 'innocent' choice can have unforeseen repercussions for not only the person who made the choice, but for those around them as well. I enjoyed watching Molly's character arc as she grew to understand that though the choices she'd made were sinful, God is always merciful to grant us repentance and will bless us with grace as we return to Him, determined to 'go and sin no more'.
I also liked how James was able to find forgiveness towards Molly, though I wish we'd seen more of his thought process in that direction.
I look forward to Rachel's story in the last book of the series.

Tamera Alexander is on my short list of Auto Buy authors and this book proves why. If you've ever been in a situation when you, quite literally, couldn't wait to be "beyond this moment", this story will speak to you from beginning to end.

Dr Molly Whitcomb is a professor in Athens, GA. After the death of her father, a moments indiscretion leads to an irreparable situation and she is dismissed from her position. She is given the opportunity to travel to Timber Ridge, CO and open a school for the town's children. Its a choice that goes against everything she wants but she hopes it offers a chance to regain a fraction of all she's lost. But in doing so, she compounds her previous sin with an even bigger one.

Sheriff James McPherson knows Molly is hiding something but he just doesn't know what. His instincts are usually never wrong but other than a feeling, Molly has given him nothing to warrant his distrust. Working together to build the school, James finds himself falling for the beautiful new schoolteacher, only to find his trust and possibly his reputation shattered when Molly's secret comes to light.

I literally could not put this book down. Alexander's writing is rich and detailed and leaves you wishing you were a part of the story. The emotions are real and palpable and brought me to tears several times. The themes of regret and forgiveness are strong in this story and I challenge anyone to read it and not find ways it applies to our own lives.

5 stars / A+ read.

1876 Colorado Territory

A well-written story with life lessons taught and learned along the way. It was realistic and relatable in so many ways. I loved Molly's character, James, and many others who participated in this story. I experienced so many different emotions as I was reading, which is always a good sign that the author has done something right. The faith aspect was refreshing and appreciated.

Reading the author's note at the end really summoned up the title, "Beyond This Moment" and helped align the situations in the book. We take the "not-so-good" choices we make in life and learn from them. We take the forgiveness we seek and give and know true love and redemption.

Describing some of the scenery, the author mentions Albert Bierstadt. I did a Google search of his name and come to find out I own a copy of one of his prints. It's the -Among The Sierra Nevada, California (1868). I love these kinds of "gold" nuggets while reading. Another special finding was that this is the second book I've read recently where Psalm 139 is mentioned.

Rating: PG -some adult situations, physical violence
Language: clean read
Recommend: yes!

Unmarried Dr. Molly Whitcomb was sent packing from the college in Georgia where she was a professor when they found out her indiscretion. Now alone and 3 months pregnant she must see if she can live as school teacher in a small community in Colorado.

At this time in history (11 years after the Civil War) teachers were to be unmarried and certainly not pregnant. The sheriff (James McPherson) was given supervisorship over the new teacher, but with Dr. Whitcomb not being forthcoming about her condition, things might be a bit rocky.

I enjoyed this book. I am not fond of stories where a lie is perpetuated throughout, and when found out there's finally remorse. My preference for characters would be honesty, but it made for an interesting story nonetheless, and well written.

Oh my mooshy, happy-ending-loving, sappy little heart.

I love the way Tamera Alexander tells a story. Such moments of tenderness, so much heart. Of course there was drama along the way, and the MC makes quite a mess of things. But bravo on the ending - so good.

Well done, Ms. Alexander. I am such a fan.

I truly loved this story! While it did slow down in a few places (and I found myself skimming at times), the heart of the book kept me turning the pages. James was such a wonderful character, and Molly’s bravery during one of the darkest times in her life made her easy to admire. Together, James and Molly made a perfect couple, though their journey wasn’t simple—they had to face life’s challenges, secrets, and the demands and rules of their jobs.

James could be a little wishy-washy once he discovered Molly’s secrets, but that only added to the tension and growth in the story. Overall, this is a beautifully written, clean romance that captured my attention.

This book includes
Unplanned pregnancy, and a close call rape.

Secrets. Lies. Betrayal.

Beyond This Moment is an exciting, moving tale of a young woman, Molly Whitcomb, who is forced to leave all she knows and cares for in the world. Her life, her esteemed position as Professor of Romance Languages at a University. All because of one mistake.

My Thoughts:

I LOVED Beyond This Moment! Another one of Tamera Alexander's best! Timber Ridge and how it felt to be a woman in that time in history comes to life, the characters are solid and written with heart, and Molly's struggles (both spiritually and emotionally) are so much more than just words on a page.

Molly Whitcomb is a compelling character. I felt everything she felt as she tried to hide her terrible secret beneath lie after lie after lie... we both knew it would catch up with her, but she felt she had no other choice - as we all do when we're justifying doing something wrong. Molly finds herself having to face some very painful consequences and has a hard time seeing how God could ever bring good out of her mistakes. I found this thought-provoking and can definitely relate. We can't always just "move on" when our actions hurt others as well as ourselves.

Another underlying theme is forgiveness. Can we learn to forgive ourselves and accept God's forgiveness even when others in this world treat us with scorn?

Molly's relationship with Sheriff James MacPherson is complex and very realistic, which is a refreshing change in a sea of silly romances. Sorry, I'm married - I know relationships are complicated and can't help but roll my eyes when I read some romances. I'm pleased to be able to say that there is nothing shallow about Molly and James' relationship. Though I did want to grab and shake Molly and James at times. ;-)

So are you ready for a compelling, faith-growing historical adventure? Then find this book and read it! And while you're at it, read the Fountain Creek Chronicles by Tamera Alexander, another five-star series by the same author, especially Revealed (which I consider the best in the series, and can be read by itself).

I just finished reading Beyond This Moment and all I can say is...WOW!!!! This is now, by far, my favorite Tamera Alexander book!! I absolutely loved it! It's even better than Daniel and Elizabeth's story, From a Distance (Book 1). Please, please, please rush out and get your own copy ~ you will not be disappointed!

When Molly Whitcomb is forced to leave her position as a Professor at Franklin College in Athens, GA, and take a teaching position in the town of Timber Ridge, located in Colorado Territory, she is less than enthusiastic. As we learn more about why Molly has come to Timber Ridge, the more we understand why she felt she had to make the choices she did. Very quickly, Molly realizes the secrets she carry are going to hurt the kind people she's already met. As she looks deep inside her heart, she realizes that she not only blames herself for her current predicament, she blames God as well. Why didn't He see fit to keep these things from happening to her? As we follow Molly on her journey, we eventually understand why it was in God's plan to lead Molly to Timber Ridge.

The very first time Sheriff James McPherson lays eyes on Molly Whitcomb, as she steps off the train in Sulfur Falls, he feels something he's never before felt for any woman. The feeling grows the more he gets to know her, but he feels that she's not being completely honest and honesty has always been important to him. However, James has secrets from his own past that have been gnawing at him for quite some time. He also has additional burdens that are weighing on him as he worries about how to keep his sister, Rachel Boyd, and her two sons, safe from the constant threats he feels as the Sheriff of Timber Ridge.

Beyond This Moment is a very emotional book, in my opinion. Neither Molly, nor James, realize the extent of hurt that could come from the secrets they carry. I laughed and cried (mostly cried!) right along with them. There are quite a few secondary characters that add depth to this story, and I enjoyed getting to know them as well...most of them anyway!

This is a wonderful continuation of Tamera Alexander's Timber Ridge Reflections series. I can hardly wait to see what happens next in, Within My Heart, which will be Dr. Rand Brookston and Rachel Boyd's story.

I love historical novels very much and the clothes are beautiful, but I could not have worn them ALL of the time if I had lived at the time. As well, while I love the bible and try the best I can to live by the letter of God's word, I also realize we are sinful and make mistakes, so for the time this was written I would have been more like Rachel and Lorelai...forgiving and caring and hoping I could have been given a second chance at redeeming myself for a one-time mistake.

Having said that, I really appreciated the style in which Tamera wrote Beyond This Moment. She took care and understanding and a lot of thought before each scene was written so she could capture the story and thought behind each individual in the book. There were so many diverse individuals coming into this territory at the same instance, all wishing to make a clean start and hoping that everyone, since they wanted to be given that chance would see them as a new person without blemish.

Tamera shows us tho that personalities were then as they are now, hard pressed to gossip and find fault with others. BUT, there are few individuals who once a new thought is introduced and time to sink in to mull over the bad, they can find good in an individual they have come to know instead of who that individual was at the time of the mistake. Hence, time of redemption in a new place for this person!

Molly and James story is a heartwarming story of how 2 individuals can come together even when one is trying to protect the other from her bad reputation so he won't suffer any consequences from it. And yet love and christian kindness can prevail in the end. Kudos to Tamera Alexander for another great novel!!!

I like this one better than the first in the series. I connected with the characters immediately and I felt the storyline moved better. A lot of characters from the first novel appear in this book. I am looking forward to reading Rachel's story which will be in the next book.

This book was interesting and held my attention right to the end. Dr Molly Whitcomb arrived in a small town in the C0lorado Territory to open the first school. She brings along some serious secrets about herself that are bound to be her downfall, should those secrets be revealed. The truth devastates her young man who has captured her heart. Is this the end of her budding relationships in this town? Is she going to be able to recapture the town's respect for her? Read it and find out.

What a story! Molly is just like the rest of us - impacted by a mistake she made and further impacted by her second mistake in trying to fix the first one. She had no idea what was ahead, or that God would give her a second chance. Truth, honesty, love, and forgiveness thread this book into an endearing story of hope. A classic Tamera Alexander tale.

Beyond This Moment is a compelling story that returns the reader to Timber Ridge, Colorado. What happens when private mistakes become publicly visible? Believable characters reveal all sides of the picture, with the satisfying resolution that love covers over a multitude of sins. I could not put it down!

Dr. Molly Whitcomb has achieved educational and professional success far beyond what most women could even fathom in 1876. But one mistaken night of passion has cost her dearly, ripping from her hands the professional future she fought so hard to achieve and the comforts of the only world she’s ever known. With her reputation hanging by a thread she seizes the only option offered to her – a teaching position in remote Timber Ridge in the Colorado Territory. Determined to mask her shame behind the veil of widowhood, Molly never imagines the far-reaching ramifications of her desperate rash act, particularly where the handsome sheriff, James McPherson, is concerned. James is a gentleman in every sense of the word, a man of principle and honor the likes of which Molly had never dreamed of meeting in the wild territory. As Molly begins to establish a home in Timber Ridge, her new life, built on a foundation of deception, threatens to destroy everything she’s begun to hold dear. When the truth is revealed, can love withstand the self-righteous recrimination of society and the deep-set wounds found within two hearts desperate for acceptance and a fresh start?

Tamera Alexander has a gift for crafting characters so real, so vibrant, that they spring to life from the page so alive that you cannot help but rejoice with them in their victories and weep with them over their sorrows. Though I haven’t walked Molly’s specific road, her struggle with shame over past choices and the premium she places on maintaining her reputation at all costs are all too real and painfully relatable. It’s all too easy to rationalize our way out of taking responsibility for our actions, of dealing with consequences immediately instead of putting off a painful, but ultimately necessary task. With Molly’s journey, Alexander beautifully illustrates the timeless axiom that the light of truth does indeed set one free, and that God’s gift of second, third, fourth chances and more – His grace – is there for any child who runs to His arms, no matter how far or hard the fall. Similar to Elizabeth, the heroine of the previous novel in this series, I appreciated how Alexander once again crafts a female lead that is strong, independent, and forward-thinking, but wholly of the time period in which she lives. Through Molly’s refined southern eyes, Alexander fully immerses the reader in a community on the brink of great social change, a place struggling to reconcile its roots as a rugged frontier town with the push and pull of social and economic expansion. Alexander’s secondary characters are as fully realized as her leads, and make the world of Timber Ridge a compelling and fascinating place in which to lose oneself.

James McPherson is the type of hero that embodies everything I love about cowboys and the legends of the West. Ruggedly handsome and unfailingly kind, he possesses a code of honor so ingrained in his very being that it informs every decision, every choice he makes. Life was black and white until Molly entered his life, and his attraction to the pretty schoolteacher could not override the nagging sense that all was not as it seemed in her life. When Molly’s secrets collide with his strict code of honor and threaten to unmask his own secret shame, James faces a choice – to exercise grace and faith or run from a love he’d never dared dream of experiencing. James and Molly’s relationship embodies everything I’ve come to love about Alexander’s writing. She can craft a romance that can take your breath away, characters so real and flawed you can’t help but see yourself in their lives, and a redemptive thread that unfolds so beautifully, and with such power, that the grace of it will bring tears to your eyes. Through James and Molly’s story, you’ll witness a powerful illustration of God’s never-failing, awe-inspiring ability to take the messes humans can make of their lives and transform them into something beautiful, if only one surrenders to the fall.

I originally picked up this book solely for the cover, I just really, really liked it--an attractive woman with a gorgeous background, not to mention the handsome man behind her. After reading the synopsis I was intrigued and had to get it, since I've lately been finding many Christian Fiction books that I've enjoyed. Now I have to admit that the book sat around waiting to be read for awhile, until just a few days ago. I was fortunate enough to meet Julie Lessman at her book signing on Tuesday, and she, my mother and I had coffee together afterwards, which was such a treat. I cannot tell you how special that lady is! And before you wonder what in the world my point is, I am mentioning all this because Julie happened to mention that she enjoyed Tamera Alexander. So, knowing I had this book sitting on a bookshelf back at home, I made a mental note to start it as soon as I finished the book I was reading at the time.

I'm happy to say that I was not disappointed. Unfortunately, I actually left this book at the office on Friday and not only is it the weekend but that was actually my last day at that job!! I was so hooked on this book, though, that I went out and bought another copy today so that I could finish it. Alexander's writing has a quality similar to Julie Lessman's--the story just grabs you and doesn't let go. The story is woven very well with characters that are very realistic--many are likable and then there are those you'd love to strangle if given the chance. In all honesty, the plot itself was a bit predictable (I've been a bit spoiled by Julie's incredible twisting story lines), but what I appreciated most was the lack of preachiness, though there is no mistaking that this is a Christian fiction novel. Beyond This Moment only had a touch of the formulaic feel that I find too often ruins Christian fiction--thankfully, Alexander's beautiful writing lessens that impression.

This was my first read by Tamera Alexander but it certainly won't be my last. I'm happy to have found another author of Christian fiction that I can enjoy so much.

Beyond This Moment is a very apt title for this book. Who can tell the end of the road from the choices we make? The book's theme of acceptance of the consequences we make got stronger and stronger as the book neared the climax and conclusion. We don't know what is at the end of that road, but we can know that a loving God does know the end and that road may be just what we really need or someone else may need as we journey on that road. I loved the story- a woman who gets pregnant out of wedlock- and forced to teach school in the new state of Colorado (1876) and hiding that secret. I liked discovering how the confessions came and that you know there would be a happy ending. You know the guy is going to get the girl in the end, but it sure was fun reading and imagining how it would all play out. I would have liked to have had more closure in the end- a flashforward maybe? Still, another book I want on my shelf for when I want a nice, easy, romantic, and uplifting book to get read.

The story of James and Molly will keep you entertained for hours; in fact, once you start reading, you'll probably be tempted to keep going until the satisfying conclusion. But this story is not just about these two main characters, but also touches significantly on the lives of supporting/secondary characters. And I appreciate that Alexander clues us in on how some of the folks from the first book in the series are doing.

I also appreciate that Alexander interweaves several themes that are so much a part of daily living that we can relate to them, like prejudice, discrimination, the stigma associated with illegitimate birth, poverty, lack of trust -- but also and importantly how prayer and faith in God helps us to overcome these issues in a loving and forgiving manner. It is historical fiction that pulls on the emotions, but I think this is good because it compels us to examine the present, lest we repeat some mistakes. I look forward to reading the next installment of Alexander's series.

I enjoyed this book and will give it 4 stars while the first could be upped to 4.5 stars. The main characters in this book prayed for God's guidance a lot but seemed to miss the understanding that the forgiveness they each ultimately seeked is possible because of Jesus. That's the only reason they're not both rated the same star level.

A whole host of new Timber Ridge characters was introduced while learning more about some from the first book. I would love to read another book just about how Dr. Molly Whitcomb obtained a doctorate in romance languages since a woman attending college seems very rare for the time. I could feel the excitement the town felt when Colorado received its statehood, and Sheriff MacPherson was pretty swoon worthy (sorry, just can't think of another phrase to describe him) most of the book. Sometimes I wanted to slap him for his judgmental ways, but he is just a human LOL. The love story is sweet, and the social justice is inspiring. It was fun to revisit this town, and I look forward to Book 3.

I like this authors style of writing, it keeps me reading and interested. She develops her characters little by little and gives you a little piece of the story at a time and I like that. I had no idea how this could possibly have a happy ending, but she pulled it off in a different way. The reason I didn't give this higher starts was the story line bothered me a little. No matter what we do God will always forgive us, and I liked that the character came to that conclusion and tried to make it right, but it was hard to read. I will be reading the third book, and that it very different for me. I normally begin series like this but never finish. Very clean- Kissing. Not preachy.

I enjoyed this Christian historical fiction story. The way it dealt with the fact that many times our poor choices have consequences that come with them was wonderful, and forgiving ourselves is often harder than receiving forgiveness from others. Molly was a character I really liked. She was definitely not perfect, and at times impulsive, but the changes in her life were inspiring.

In one moment of weakness, Dr. Molly Whitcomb's life changed forever. Finding herself pregnant and unwed, Molly is fired from her job as a college professor and forced to take a lower position as the new school teacher in Timber Ridge- far from her Georgia home. Ashamed and embarrassed, Molly chooses to present herself as a widow- and hide her pregnancy- upon arrival in town to cover up her poor choices. Timber Ridge Sheriff, James McPherson, has been tirelessly dedicated to his job, but after meeting Molly his attraction to her is immediate and he finds himself wanting to spend more time in the beautiful "widow's" company. As James begins to fall for Molly, he believes her attempt to keep her distance emotionally from him stems from proper etiquette during her "mourning" status, but in actuality Molly is also beginning to fall in love with James but knows a true romance could never occur between them because of her poor choices. When James finally learns about her secrets, he is angry and brokenhearted caught between the integrity required for his position as sheriff, his hurt at Molly's purposeful betrayal, and the deep love he has developed for her. Meanwhile, heartbroken herself at "what could have been" had she chosen differently that one fateful night, Molly comes to understand that the deeper consequence of her sin is not the shame she bears as an unwed woman expecting a child, but is the unfathomable pain she has caused the man she loves.

Beyond This Moment is such a beautiful story of grace. I enjoyed the easy friendship between James and Molly that naturally parlayed into a romance. Alexander does not sugar coat the consequences of sin, but delves fully into all of the ramifications Molly's choices have for herself and for others. Most poignant are the telling of how Molly's duplicity deeply wounded James and in the aftereffects Molly suffers after her secrets are made known to the townspeople. Alexander does not, however, show only the dark side of sin; she also shows the beauty of God's grace, forgiveness and blessings along with the freedom we can experience when we lay ourselves bare.
